Charleston Girl

Dark!Arvin Russell x Reader
~Description~
You were the wealthy good girl from the “better” side of Knockemstiff, Ohio only that was so far from the truth. Arvin was never one to judge for you being a hidden troublemaker but he can’t help but want to straighten out a girl who doesn’t want to be handled.
~Warnings~
Rape/Non-con, Underage drinking, Smoking, Fingering, Forced Orgasm, semi-public sex

“It’s so pretty on you,” you said as Lenora gave you a twirl. She was wearing a pretty pink tea-length dress. It was one of your own. You had so many from Momma, that you didn’t bother hanging this one up. It was in a box in your attic. You hadn’t thought of it until Lenora asked you about wearing something to the dance and what you would wear.
All you thought about was going to the dance with Lenora. You couldn’t care less about what you were going to wear. It’s always been that way. You and Lenora. You both were two peas in a pod. You were never seen without the other the day you found each other. It was in Kindergarten after Tommy Matson pushed quiet, good Lenora into the mud. He got a bad black eye and you got a new best friend. As you both grew up, you wrestled less with boys your age and found yourself under their sheets while Lenora became a godly goody two shoes. You kept up with the persona of the do-gooder for Momma of course. There was no way of talking your way out of one of Momma’s lectures.
So you tried your hardest to seem like that good rich girl from the “better side” of Knockemstiff, Ohio. Many people didn’t look past the facade. You played it up so well going to church, never staying out late, never drinking or smoking. Little did everyone know you were doing more than they even realized. No one saw past it. Well, mostly everyone didn’t except for Arvin Russel. You didn’t know Lenora’s cousin that well even when you were at their house most of the time. He never talked much to you only gruff hellos and a few forced waves.
He knew what you were plain as day but he never spoke on it. Never called you out for your sinful ways when you and Momma were over and Emma was going on about how much of a good girl you are, when you would laugh and giggle next to Lenora during prayer, or when you would lie to the boys you flirted with about being a virgin.
Arvin never even batted an eye. That was until you found yourself being flirted with by Tommy Matson. He was just a dalliance in your eyes. He didn’t mean much to you plus it wasn’t like you were actually planning on sleeping with him but to Arvin…
Arvin acted as if you sold yourself to the devil.
He treated you so coldly after he saw you with Tommy one day. You had been kissing something you always did. Tommy got too handsy when you finally called it off. You rolled your eyes when he cursed about you being a tease and how Susie already went to third base with him. You spit the taste of him out and wiped your mouth.
“Not all of us are easy like Susie Cox…” you snarled.
He rolled his eyes before spitting, “I was told you were easier than Susie Cox.”
You cursed at him before shoving him away only to find Arvin looking in your direction with a hard glare. You stared back not knowing whether to give him a hard glare too. You chose to leave. Tommy was being a total drag anyway.
“Good luck findin’ a way home,” Tommy said as you walked off. You couldn’t stop the middle finger that raised from you as you walked away with your arms crossed over your chest.
You made your way down the road to your house. It wasn’t far from where you were now. So the walk wouldn't be anyways. You were by yourself for what seemed like ten minutes before hearing the sound of a car slow down next to you. You ignored it, thinking it was Tommy until a sound came from inside of the car. A sound from a voice you didn't want to hear right now.
You stopped dead in your tracks and sighed, “Arvin…”
You didn’t want to see him, especially not after your make-out succession with Tommy Matson. To be honest you would rather have him be Tommy than Arvin.
“Get in,” he bit out.
You hesitated a bit. You could tell he was upset and you could figure out a good and well enough reason as to why. He opened the door to his truck and you hurried in. It was quiet, so quiet it had you listening to the wind from outside the car for comfort. You wanted him to say something instead of this awkward silence that had your insides ripping themselves out.
Finally, you couldn’t bear it any longer and said something.
“Don’t tell Momma,” you whispered as you stared out into the road.
You didn’t know why you said it because it wasn’t like he would’ve. He never did and yet… you had this overwhelming feeling that today might’ve been different, You could hear his grip tighten on the wheel ever so slightly at the plea.
“And if I do?” He quietly asked. That caused you to finally look at him. You blinked in his direction, and he kept his eyes straight on the road.
“She’ll kill me.”
“Is that such a bad thing?” he grunted as he pulled into your driveway. You stared at him as he finally turned his attention to you. His frown and hardened eyes stared right back at you.
You swallowed, “Please… don’t tell Momma.”
He stared at you for what seemed like a long time before he eventually tilted his head, with a small nod. You thanked him for the ride and then that was it. You both never talked about it again nor was there even a reason to. To find your cousin’s best friend making out with a guy who bullied them both would have anyone shaking their heads at the sight. To this day you still don’t really know why you agreed to it in the first place. You supposed it was you were just bored and Tommy was the only one near that had anything interesting about him.
You shook your head as Lenora pulled you up from the flowery bed.
“Your turn,” she said with a smile, “You need a pretty dress too.”
Lenora shuffled through the old boxes of dresses. It could’ve been decades worth of dresses. Momma had a keen eye for style. Lenora pulled out a pale blue dress you’ve never seen before. You smiled at it when Lenora held it up to you in the mirror.
“Gorgeous.”
You stared at it for a bit before Lenora spoke up again, “Hurry and put in on.”
You nodded and went to your bathroom. When you got the dress on you noticed how much prettier it was. The ruffles needed to be puffed out more, but it was a beautiful dress. When you came out Lenora couldn’t stop smiling and complimenting you about how you looked in it. You giggled when she twirled you around her.
“Well don’t y’all look so pretty,” Momma said as you both smiled towards her.
“Don’t we?”
She started to walk closer but you found Arvin right behind her. Your smile faltered a bit at the sight of him. Momma smiled at him as she gestured to you and Lenora. Arvin cleared out his throat a bit before agreeing.
“Oh is it time to leave already?” Lenora asked.
Arvin nodded as he stared at you both, mainly you. You didn’t know how you felt about the look he gave you. It was a soft gaze, softer than the day he saw you with Tommy Matson that’s for sure. You turned and grabbed Lenora’s hand trying to ignore Arvin’s eyes, “Let's go pick up your things, hm?”
Lenora nodded and followed you back to your room. You helped pack the rest of her things and sent Lenora on her way with Arvin, who still looked at you with a strange look you couldn’t pinpoint.
. . .
You held the bottle to your lips chugging down the burning whiskey quickly you knew that if you didn’t it would all come bubbling up.
“Slow down, sugar. What’s the rush?” the blonde boy slurred with a chuckle he was way drunker than you by a tenfold. Time and time again he always told you that he could hold his liquor and time and time again you always proved him wrong.
You rolled your eyes and pushed him away when his hands started to palm at your thighs. It wasn’t the first time Ricky tried to pull something like this. You could usually forgive it because he would cry about how sorry he was the next day. You huffed and closed your eyes, drinking the last bit of the whiskey before throwing it down. You could feel your body warming up finally after an hour or so sitting there for what felt like forever with this boy.
“Ricky, if I wanted to fuck something I wouldn’t have called you.” You said so bluntly it had him frowning and leaning forward.
“Sorry,” he mumbled and crossed his arms over his chest.
“It’s okay,” you sighed. You pulled out a cigarette one you stole from Momma, it was one you knew she wouldn’t be missing. You lit it up and took a small drag from it. “I’m gettin’ tired.” You tried to do a convincing yawn. It worked since Ricky was too drunk to notice how fake it was.
“I'm going to start headin’ home, Rick.”
“This late? It’s dark out...”
“I’ll be fine I'm just down the road from you,” you stated as you pulled your cardigan around you. You gave him a wave and left. The real reason why you left was you couldn’t stand having to take care of boys when they were drunk. It reminded you too much of your father.
You got far away enough to where you could only hear the sound of the wind blowing through you. You kicked a few rocks and missed causing you to slip and fall on your side. You could barely feel the scrape on the side of your arm courtesy of the alcohol Ricky supplied you. You laughed at yourself mostly because you magically saved your cig. You took a long drag and inhaled deeply. You picked yourself back up a task that now seemed a lot more difficult than normal. You swayed a bit and tried to keep yourself upright. You could make it to your house: just another mile or two to go. You continued on your merry way, taking one last hit of your cig before throwing it down and stomping on it.
By then you didn’t notice the sound of a car slowing down by you. You would’ve broken out in a run, that was if you could run. Thankfully it wasn’t a cop but the sight that was held before you had you cursing underneath your breath.
Arvin stared at you for what seemed like a long time before he huffed and opened the passenger seat door. You would’ve ignored it and kept walking if your whole body didn’t feel like you were carrying bags of sand. You made your way in, closed the door, and leaned your head against the window. You knew you probably smelled like a cheap liquor store, so Arvin could easily guess what you had been doing.
It was quiet for a minute, you could tell he wasn’t as upset as when you found you and Tommy but he was disappointed. The car slowed back down a bit and pulled into an area with a lot of brush.
“I don’t get why Lenora associates with you…” he calmly said as he put the car in park. “You two are so different.”
You huffed and stared at the window. You weren’t going to get lectured by a boy, especially Arvin Russel.
“How are we so different?” You chuckled as you stared out into the dense forest. You turned your head to find Arvin looking directly at you his eyes were unnerving you a bit. You can tell he mumbled something but you couldn’t make it out, you were a bit too drunk. You thought you could hold your liquor, not tonight.
You didn’t understand what happened at first. You found his lips on yours and his arms around your waist. It was all too quick for your drunk mind to comprehend.
“Ar- Arvin,” You mumbled into his lips.
He shallowed your pleas instantly with his tongue as he forced it into your mouth. You usually didn’t like it when boys would try to take control and it was no different now. You tried your best to fight him off but your slaps were weak while he was tasting your mouth. You moaned into him when he pressed a spot on your thighs it had you trying to close them but Arvin only pushed them wider. You could finally breathe again when he pulled his mouth off of you but instead opted to kiss your jaw and the side of your neck. You could feel his fingers on your underwear. They slowly rubbed up and down and you could feel the pair becoming wet.
“You’re fucking drippin’ is that all for me?” he sighed as he pulled your underwear to the side and stared at it. Never in your experience has a boy even taken a peak. All the other times it was dark with you usually on top. It made you feel uncomfortable to have him this close. To have him staring at an intimate spot. To have him be the one that was overpowering you. It made you feel small, and you didn’t like the feeling of not being in control. He entered with a finger slowly bringing it out and in before adding another one.
“Arvin please,” you gasped when he curled his fingers in a way that had you tensing. You pulled at his wrist until you felt his fingers go a bit faster.
“Say that again,” he leaned over your body and whispered in your ear. “Say please and say my name again.”
“P- please, Arvin.”
Arvin kissed your lips as soon as those words left your mouth. His fingers didn’t stop nor slow once. Back and forth back and forth while you were squirming and moaning beneath him. Your hips met up with his hand every time causing his other hand to hold over your stomach to make you stay still. You cried out when his thumb started to rub at your clit. It was all too much for you, you were too weak, too intoxicated to get him off of you. It got to the point where he had you whining out for him. Begging him pleading for him to let you come. He smiled a devilish smile that had you furrowing your eyebrows, kissed your cheek, and nodded. You saw white and grabbed onto his hand that was holding you down. You moaned so loudly you swore that the woods were still echoing the sound that left your lips. Your body was too hot and paralyzed to even move. You breathed deeply as he fixed up your underwear and smoothed over your skirt. He stuck his fingers in his mouth tasting you while he stared at you. He stared at you while he did it. You could’ve slapped him if you weren’t too out of it to say something.
“Let's get you home, hmm?” he said a bit out of breath too.
You nodded and tried to pick yourself back up to a comfortable position. You both were deathly silent in the truck. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of your breathing. When he finally pulled into your driveway you thanked him and went on your way. You didn’t turn back as you went inside of your house and you didn’t hear him pull out until you closed the door.
. . .
“Y’all look like princesses,” Momma said as she fluffed up your dress and then did the same for Lenora.
Emma smiled as she watched you both from the dining room chair.
“Arvin is drivin’ y’all to the dance, right?” Emma asked as she got up and leaned against the archway.
“Yeah,” Lenora said happily.
You could’ve broken something right then and there.
“Arvin?” you said lowly and Lenora nodded in a smile. She didn’t notice how upset you were but Momma did.
“Don’t worry I am sure other people are going to be comin’ up in trucks too,” she giggled as she fixed your hair again.
You weren’t worried about that yet you played along. You sighed at Momma and Emma picked up your guys’s shoes. You didn’t want to go out of your house all of a sudden. You didn’t want to go and see him. You haven’t seen him in over a month. You didn’t know how you managed not seeing him considering he was basically Lenora’s brother. Yet you did, you hid away. You haven’t been out drinking since that night which made some of your “other” friends upset. You couldn’t give them the real answer as to why so you opted to just say you were grounded.
Lenora held your hand and guided you outside. Momma and Emma followed behind, smiling as soon as Arvin’s truck was in their line of sight.
“Be good girls,” Emma said as you and Lenora jumped into Arvin’s truck. You both gave them a quick wave and went on your way.
The car wasn’t silent but it wasn’t very talkative either. Lenora seemed to notice the complete energy shift and she was hesitant to start the conversation. Somehow she did. She and Arvin did some small talk. Now and then she invited you to a conversation. You would reply with one-word answers. Finally, you made it to the dance you knew that some people were already tipsy before even walking in just from the way they walked.
As soon as you and Lenora walked out of Arvin’s truck she checked on you. She whispered when she asked if you were alright. You only nodded. You didn’t want to be near Arvin for a moment more. She accepted it and walked you to the door. You glance to your right to see Tommy smile at you with a brown paper bag he isn’t careful hiding.
“You go on in, I'll meet you inside, okay?” You said and Lenora looked between you and Tommy. She didn’t look pleased but she didn’t say anything. She nodded and walked in.
You felt bad and you knew that what you were doing was bad. What you were about to do was impulsive but you couldn’t stop yourself as you walked towards Tommy. His little gang wasn’t there with him, it was just him with a bottle.
“I knew you couldn’t hold up on a good time forever,” he said.
You frowned and took the bottle from his hand. You downed whatever it was easily. It was sweet and burned the back of your throat. It was a pleasant burn, one that made you feel a bit better about leaving Lenora. You leaned against Tommy’s car, never noticing how he only stared at you.
“You look beautiful tonight…”
“I’m sure Susie would agree too,” you quietly said as you sipped the bottle.
“You’re still mad at that?”
“You said that I was easier than Susie Cox. Who wouldn’t be mad at that,” you quipped.
He stared at your lips then your eyes and only smiled. His hand touched your cheek, smoothing out your jawline and then finally holding it.
“You know I don’t believe that…” he whispered as he moved his face towards your lips.
You let him kiss you and you smiled. He was an idiot and a bully but you still let him kiss you. You couldn’t fully get why you did. You closed your eyes as you let him fully relax onto you. His hands started to make their way down to your neck then your back. It was calming, you felt calm as he held you. That was until you felt air circulate you, and Tommy was on the ground with Arvin on top of him hitting him repeatedly. You gasped as you stared at them. You couldn’t even scream from how stunned you were at the sight.
“Stop, Stop it! Arvin quit!” You yelled at him and pulled at him but you couldn’t get him off of Tommy. “Please, Arvin please stop.”
You could feel tears in your eyes. You know once you started crying you couldn’t stop. He only stopped when blood started pouring from Tommy’s nose. You yelped at the sight of his face. The whimpering sounds of the younger man were startling to hear. You couldn’t quell it though as you were being pulled away.
You were farther away from the dance from Tommy’s bloody face. You cried when Arvin shoved you against his truck, “Why did you do that?”
“How could you willingly give yourself to that boy?”
You didn’t know why he asked that or why he even thought it was any of his business.
“You’re not my dad. I shouldn’t have to tell you why I do the things I do and it shouldn’t bother you.”
“I don’t think you understand…” he quietly said as he took your hair in his hands. You screeched when he pulled your head back. He quickly covered your mouth. The searing pain of your hair being ripped and pulled back had you sobbing. You could barely look at Arvin from how blurry it all was.
“From the moment I touched you I claimed you. You don’t get to whore yourself around anymore. Not with me around to stop it.” His sharp words made you quiver against him. “Unless you want me to go to your mother and tell her all the sinful things I’ve watched you do.”
You shook your head whimpering at how tight his hands were around your hair.
“Are you going to be good from now on?” He asked and you nodded your head. His lips curved up at that. “Turn around, hold your dress up, and bend over against the truck.”
You paused for a moment before finally doing what he ordered. You knew crying wasn’t going to get you out of this but you couldn’t stop the tears that traveled down your face. You held up your dress and you bent over the side of his truck. He held your hips tightly and pulled you back so your ass could fully be seen by him. He slapped it harshly once and then again and again. You could barely hold yourself in the position from how bad his slaps burned into your skin. When he was done he pulled down your underwear and stuffed his fingers inside you.
“Soakin’ my fingers,” he whispered in your ear. You tensed at that. Your nails felt like they were going to snap as you gripped his truck for support.
You heard the sound of his zipper going down and the ruffling of clothing. If you could make yourself run right now you would’ve been you couldn’t wield yourself to move. Not even an inch. You gasped when you felt his head push into you. It was going to be a tight fit and you didn’t know if you could handle it. He was so thick that you could feel every vein and inch of him. You whimpered when he finally was flushed against you.
“That’s my good girl,” he said as he smoothed over your ass.
His touch was soft against you like he was saying sorry for slapping you but his thrusts were deep and rough. He was sending a message through them through each powerful thrust. You moaned at the feel of him and when he pulled you close to him, your back was to his chest.
“You’re mine now,” he grunted. “No one else gets to use this anymore. Just me, only me.”
You nodded as he fucked you against his truck. You squeezed your eyes shut when he hit a spot within you that had you cursing his name. He held his hand over your mouth and with one final thrust had you seeing stars. You came all over him. He didn’t stop only going in harder than before. You didn’t think he would come inside you not until he whispered breathily about how you were milking him dry. You mumbled under his hand trying to plead with him. But he only chuckled and held his other hand to your stomach. His finger slipped onto your clit rubbing it over and over again.
You didn’t know you had another in you until you were coming around him a second time. This time it sent him off the edge too. You sobbed when he held himself there planting himself deep inside you. When he pulled out you cringed at the feel of his come dripping down your thighs. No boy has ever came inside you there was no possible way you would ever risk getting pregnant. Yet Arvin did it. Without your permission. You wanted to hit him, to curse at him but you couldn’t even move. Arvin pushed some of his come back into you and pulled your underwear back up.
“Now go inside and give Lenora a good time.”
You nodded quietly doing what he told you to do. You could barely walk but somehow you made it to Lenora. She could tell something happened to you but to be honest you were too out of it to even notice. Just grabbed her and danced. Here on the floor, you could forget about Arvin and your newfound terrifying relationship with him.

(Please Don’t) Leave Me Alone - Richie Tozier
word count: 3142 warnings: swearing, mentions of being drugged summary: maybe richie ignoring you had more reason to it than you thought. maybe he was just... jealous? ___
Looking back on it now, going to a party by herself was probably the worst idea (y/n’s) ever had. Not because she disliked parties, she loved them, but she’d always gone in a group, or with a friend. Tonight, she’d gone completely alone.
She’d thought it would be exciting, she could do whatever she wanted, and stay as late or leave as early as she pleased, not having to wait for a friend hooking up with a stranger or a ride home. She could drink to no end and meet new people- it was a good idea, in theory.
Except now, she was trapped between a rock and a hard place. Meaning the wall, and Steven Matson’s arm. Earlier the attention had been welcomed, she didn’t mind being flirted with by a cute guy, it’d been a while since anyone had flirted with her, honestly, so it was very welcomed.
There was once a time where she didn’t really have to worry about that kind of attention, because she used to always get it from-
“Want me to get you another drink?” The boy in front of her asked, shaking her thoughts.
“Hm? Oh,” She nods, handing him her empt cup. “Yeah, sure, thanks”
He grins in response before leaving. And she doesn’t realize that she’s been holding her breath until she sighs, and slumps back against the wall.
Steven’s not that exciting, she realizes. He’s been chatting her ear off for the past- who knows, hour, maybe? And she couldn’t recall a single thing he’d said. It wasn’t due to the alcohol either. He was just that simple.
He wasn’t ugly, though.
Running her hands through her hair, she wished that she had a tie to pull it back, because it was suddenly very hot in the room, and it was all she could focus on. The smell of sweat from dancing and bustling bodies, and how much heat they generated in this small room. She wanted to head outside for a breath of fresh air, but there was no way she could make it out and back in time to see Steven.
She made a glance towards the door, just out of curiosity, to see if she could run there and back. But her eyes landed elsewhere.
On a tall, curly mop of haired figure that had just wandered in.
Richie’s eyes met hers, and she darted her gaze elsewhere with an inhumane speed.
Richie Tozier was her best friend, or at least he used to be. In the past month he’d been shutting her out, until eventually he was more of a ghost than a friend at all. She didn’t know what she did, or what happened that made him not want to hang out with her anymore, but it was no use trying to ask, because anytime she tried to talk to him, he’d vanish.
At first it was heartbreaking, because she’d known him for so long, and she thought that they were close enough to talk through any rough patch they could go through. But as time went on and Richie pushed himself further away, (y/n) only became annoyed, and was a bit more eager to let him do whatever he wanted.
And if he wanted nothing to do with her, then fine. She wasn’t going to beg him to stay.
Even though she really, really wanted to.
“Hope you didn’t miss me too much”
(y/n) nearly jumped when Steven appeared in front of her, one arm caging her in while he handed her a drink. She gave him a short, weak smile, and backed herself up until the wall wouldn’t allow her to move away any further. The flaw in this plan, however, is that Steven just followed, and the space between them was even shorter.
“Course not” She mumbled back, and was about to take a drink from her cup, before she noticed the strange fizzing at the bottom.
Great. He spiked it with something.
She let out a soft sigh, lifting the cup to her lips and pretending to take a sip, so that he wouldn’t realize she caught on to his dumb scheme.
Tonight couldn’t have gone more terribly.
“So, whaddya say you and I go somewhere else?”
(y/n) looked up at him, eyes bored, and a eyebrow raised as if to say ‘really?’.
“Somewhere, huh?” She hums, only for her own entertainment. “Like where?”
“Well we could go upstairs…” He suggested, leaning in closer. It took a lot of energy for her not to shrink away.
God his breath smelled like beer.
“Or to my car out front,” He continued. “Or honestly, we could just-”
“Alright pal,” (y/n) pushed her hand into his arm, and began to shove him away so she could leave. “It’s not happening”
With that, she began to walk off, tossing her drugged drink to the ground carelessly.
“Wait wait wait,” Steven spun around, snatching her arm in his hand so she’d stop. “But all night you-”
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” She snapped at him, yanking her arm to get it of his hold, but he was much stronger than her. “Steven let go-”
“You’re such a fucking tease, (y/n),” He snarled, the playful and flirty voice long gone. “Leading me on all night long, and now you’re acting like you don’t want this”
There’s a split second where she’s genuinely afraid of him, because his grip is unrelenting, and the look in his eyes suggests that he doesn’t care whether she gives in willingly or not.
And as soon as the idea of yelling for help crosses her mind, the feeling is gone.
Because she’s torn away from Steven’s hold, and there’s a secure hold around her waist.
“Why don’t you fuck off, Matson” A voice mutters.
All of the fear she’d previously felt disappeared, and it’s replaced by the surprise of having Richie right there next to her, keeping her firmly held against his side.
He’s being protective.
Steven rolls his eyes, obviously not giving a shit about Richie’s little display. He scoffs, glancing from Richie to (y/n).
“Come on, why don’t you tell your little guard dog here that you can speak for yourself, and that he can go and fuck off now?” Steven asks.
(y/n) scoffs, staring at him with disgust, and honestly, she should spit on him. She wants to spit on him, fuck she really wants to step forward and spit right on his face-
“Matson, I swear to fucking god, if another shitty fucking thing comes out of your mouth, I’ll break it,” Richie’s hand is tightening on her hip, and he’s pushing her behind him a bit. “Seriously, walk away”
He’s practically growling, and even when they were friends she’d never seen him so… angry.
“Richie fucking Tozier why are you here being a buzzkill?” Steven spat out, taking a daring step forward. “She clearly doesn’t even give a shit about you, so why don’t you just-”
The loud crack of skin on skin was a sharp echo, and anyone in a five foot radius could hear the burning sensation on Steven’s cheek.
(y/n) was panting, and she shook out her hand, because the slap stung her palm more than she thought it would.
“Fuck you” She muttered to the boy who was holding his cheek and whining like a baby.
She cast a glance towards Richie for a short moment, before shoving past him and making her way to the door. She was done with this night, this party, she just wanted to go home and curl up into a ball under her blankets and forget all of this had happened.
Of course, she wasn’t able to leave that easy, and as soon as she walked out the door, someone hollered for her.
She looked back at Richie, before shaking her head, and continuing her trek.
“What do you want?” She muttered, leaving him no choice but to chase after her in order to catch up.
She barely even looked at him.
“Jesus, (y/n/n), give me some credit, I’m here to make sure you’re okay”
“Wow,” She rolls her eyes. “Thanks. Really,”
Her voice is monotone, so he knows she doesn’t mean it, and it’s annoying, but she continues before he can come up with some witty snap back remark.
She stops in her tracks, whirling around and shoving an accusatory finger into his chest. He stumbles backward, caught off guard from the sudden action, but he catches his footing, left to watch her explode.
“Thanks for showing up, and for being there. Wow, Richie. Just… wow”
It’s more of a simmer than an explosion, but it feels just as bad.
(y/n) starts to walk off again, but Richie just runs up to her side again.
“For fucks sake (y/n)- will you pause for just a second-?”
“No!” She shouts, shaking her head furiously. “No, Rich, I won’t, I’m not going to- I- I can’t wait for you anymore, I’m tired of waiting for you,” Her voice cracks, and he knows that if she starts crying right now, then he’s going to break. “So can you please just… just go back to icing me out because it was honestly easier”
She sniffles, and turns away to walk home in peace. It hurts to walk away but she’s just so tired of his bullshit. Never before had her own body felt so heavy, each step making her bed more and more enticing.
Richie didn’t say anything, but he kept walking next to her.
She looked up at him, teary eyes narrowed, and her brow furrowed in a glare, but Richie just shrugged his shoulders.
“Well I’m not gonna let you walk yourself home alone at this time of night,” He said, and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket. “So you’ll just have to put up with me for the next ten minutes”
She shakes her head and rolls her eyes again, but doesn’t give him the benefit of a remark, opting instead to keep her mouth shut.
She makes it a whole minute before feeling compelled to say something.
“What were you even doing there?” She muttered out, wrapping her arms around herself tightly. “I thought you hated parties now”
He lets out a chuckle, earning another glare from the girl.
“To come save you, obviously,” He teases, which she definitely doesn’t appreciate. “I just thought I’d give it a shot, seeing as I had nothing else going on tonight”
She didn’t know what she wanted to hear, but that certainly wasn’t it. And Richie could tell, because she was frowning.
“Are you mad?” He asked with a chuckle.
“You did not just fucking ask me that” She mutters back.
“(y/n), you asked, what did you want me to say?” He asks, and she just scoffs.
“I didn’t need you to swoop in like some hero and rescue me, Richie,” She told him. “You might find this hard to believe, but I’ve actually learned to live on my own now thank you very much. And with that means I can protect myself, I don’t need you to-”
“Alright, I get it,” He mutters. “Your ‘standing back and doing nothing’ was your way of standing up for yourself,” He says, and before (y/n) can argue, he’s muttering again. “My apologies, I didn’t realize you had that handled. Which is why I came over to help your ass-”
“Alright, that’s enough-”
“-which would have been his, by the way, had I not intervened”
“Congratu-fucking-lations!” (y/n) shrieked. “Go ahead and pat yourself on the fucking back then. What do you want from me? Huh? Do you really think I would’ve let Steven fucking Matson have his way with me?”
“No, I don’t think that,” Richie mumbled. “But I didn’t like the way he was looking at you. Or grabbing you like that-”
“Wow,” (y/n) rolled her eyes. “I honestly didn’t think you still gave a fuck”
Richie looked down at her, but she’d rendered him speechless, so he didn’t say anything. He looked forward as they walked in silence for a little while longer.
It was silent until they got to her porch.
She looked up at him, with a sad sort of expression, like looking at him broke her heart. And quite frankly, it did.
“Thanks for walking me home, Richie,” She said in a soft mutter. “You can go back to forgetting about me now”
She turned to walk inside, but his hand stopped her. It wrapped around her wrist delicately, in a hold much more gentle than Steven had her in earlier. If she wanted, she could tug her arm away and go inside. If she wanted.
“For the fucking record,” Richie muttered down to her, voice so low it was almost in a growl like it had been earlier. “I wasn’t icing you out because I wanted to. You think I want to? For fucks sake (y/n), I couldn’t be around you anymore because I was so goddamn in love with you that it hurt being around you when you obviously didn’t feel the same way. You don’t know how much it fucking sucks being friendzoned by you. I thought it was going to be easier not having you around, than having you right in front of me, and out of reach,”
Her heart is pounding, and she could feel it everywhere. From her chest to her stomach to her through to her cheek to the very tips of her fingers- she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Richie had been in love with her? It was almost too good to be true, and normally she wouldn’t believe it, but she could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice, he’d never been more serious about anything.
“I’m sorry for doing it,” He continues. “But if I hadn’t, I would’ve lost my fucking mind”
“That’s such bullshit,” (y/n) mumbles, her breath hitching in her throat. “You shut me out because you had feelings for me?” She asks, and Richie furrows his brows, offended by the outburst. “Did you ever think about- I don’t know- just telling me?” She asks with a humorless laugh. “I mean, jesus Richie, we would’ve been together this whole fucking time, but instead you make me think that you hate me and you shut me out-”
“Hold on- stop- you liked me?” Richie asks, shocked by her off-handed confession.
“Liked you?” (y/n) repeats breathlessly. “Richie, I’ve been in love with you since we were kids, you fucking dumbass-”
She raises her hand up to shove him in the chest, but he captures it with his own before leaning over and kissing her. It’s sudden, so sudden that she trips on nothing but the sheer surprise of his lips on hers, but Richie’s arm wraps around her waist, securing her against him.
A sigh escapes her, one of content and safety, and she melts against him, almost becoming a puddle on her doorstep. The hand in his is held tightly against his chest, and the other is gripping his shoulder, keeping her balanced.
He kisses her again, quickly, before she can completely pull away. Just in case she decides to walk through her door and never look at him again.
When they part, it’s slow, and his hand flies up to cup her cheek, a quick but gentle action, and his thumb traces over her cheekbone with a featherlight touch.
Her eyes are still shut, and she blindly leans forward a bit, close enough that when she whispers, he feels it against his lips.
“Are you gonna go back to ignoring me?”
He chuckles, stealing another quick peck, before shaking his head.
She finally opens her eyes, and instantly, there’s a smile on her lips.
“I guess that depends, on if you want to go out with me tomorrow night?”
“To a party?” She asks.
“No, of course not,” Richie shakes his head. “Anything else, literally anything else” He murmurs, and she grins even wider, nodding her head.
“Yeah, yeah anything else sounds good to me” She agrees softly.
She’s still nodding, in a shaky sort of way, and Richie has to cup her face in both hands to get her to stop.
“Okay,” He hums. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow, then”
“Okay,” She repeats. “I’ll see you tomorrow”
He gives her a grin, before letting go of her, and stepping back.
“Alright then” He hums.
She watches him go, a delighted smile on her face. Her heart is still pounding in her chest, and she thinks it might never stop.
“Wait, Rich,”
She calls when he’s descended her front steps, and she’s quick to race up to him, wrap her arms around him, and lean over the few inches that she’s towered above him, and kiss him one more time.
His arms encircle her waist, holding her flush against his chest. She’s on her tiptoes on the step, and one of her feet lifts off the ground, both from the bliss and from Richie picking her up, just a little bit.
“I just wanted one more,” She murmured, and Richie laughed, kissing her quickly once more, and then again. “Okay, Romeo,” She sighed. “You better go home before my parents come out and see us”
“Fine, fine,” He sighed, and backed away, reluctantly releasing her from his arms. “Tomorrow”
“Tomorrow” She says back.
She combs her fingers through his hair for a second, before turning and actually heading inside.
With a content sigh, she leans her back against the front door, eyes falling shut as her mind wandered to the events of the night. It was ridiculous, how quick of a turn things went. And now, she was going to see Richie tomorrow, for a date. She couldn't believe it.
“Who was that boy?” A voice asked, making her perk up, and realize her mother had been waiting there at the door.
“Richie,” (y/n) replied. “He walked me home”
“Richie your friend?” Her mother replied. “You’re friends again?”
(y/n) grinned, nodding her head.
“Well, I’m going to bed,” She said. “G’night, mom-”
“You’re dating this boy, now?”
“Richie,” (y/n) reminded, pausing on the steps to look down at her. “And yes, I- I think I am”
Her mother shakes her head, and lets out a small scoff.
“Really, (y/n)? Of all your options-”
“Oh, fuck off,” (y/n) laughs, trying not to listen too closely to the harsh words. “Don’t go acting like you give a shit now”
She ascends the stairs, and forgets about her mother’s cruel idea of parenting. It won’t matter tomorrow, though. So she thinks about tomorrow. Because she’s gotten Richie back, and he’s all hers now.

Bloodshot: ‘Sins of the Father’ Track by Track
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate

Maryland lays claim to one of the deepest and longest running heavy music scenes in America, with luminary acts like The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Clutch, Black Lung, Internal Void, Alms, Spiral Grave, Iron Man, Beelzefuzz, The Hidden Hand, Revelation, and Wretched among the most widely recognized.
The latest to grace the stage at The Maryland Doom Fest: BLOODSHOT. In their debut album, 'Sins of the Father' (2022), the Free State four-piece dish out a brutal plate made of solid heavy metal, served up with heaping helpings of thrash, sludge, and doom. This recording features Jared Winegardner on vocals, with Tom Stacey helming guitar, Joe Ruthvin on bass and J.B. Matson manning the drums. Savvy readers will recognize some of these guys from such storied bands as War Injun and Earthride.
The more you listen to the record, the more it grows on you, and there's some very good reasons for that. The songs are all very accessible with earthy vocals, catchy motifs, relatable lyrics, and atmosphere that ranges from raunchy to invigorating to sinister. Truly there is life in this blood, so let's explore the album one track at a time, shall we? I've asked frontman Jared Winegardner to give us some background for the journey, as well.

1. Faded Natives
Announcing its presence with three emphatic drum beats, this aggro opener launches a salvo of crunchy, thrash-laden riffage caught in a churning undertow. You'll also get the first of several guitar solos from Tom Stacey, which are a real highlight of the album.
"Faded Natives" references a live action play I saw with my kids called 'Tecumseh.' Chillicothe, Ohio is the area where I grew up and the play is performed there every year in an outside amphitheater, which I highly recommend going to see if you're ever in that area. It’s really not a particularly complicated song to figure out and shares some kinship with another one from a couple decades ago by Anthrax: "Indians." It just seems to get more and more true as time goes on that Native Americans are fading further and further from existence.
2. Visions of Yesterday
"Visions of Yesterday" skates the edges of punk and thrash, accompanied by an urgent heartbeat and a doomy underbelly. It's a shorter number, as fleeting perhaps as our own faded reminisces of days gone by.
This song is about growing older, losing people that you love one-by-one, and doing your best to hold onto their memory and keep them alive in spirit.

3. Zero Humility
A favorite of mine from the get-go, this one wears well with repeated listens. Sporting an undeniable swagger, before you know it you'll find yourself melting right into its groovy central riff. I find myself strongly identifying with its lyrical locus, as well. "Good luck with your sanity, if you're living with me."
"Zero Humility" was written a couple years before I was with the band. It's a good example of a technique I discovered years prior, when something would piss me off and I couldn’t get it out of my head, I would write it out. At the time I just saw it as poetry or sort of like a diary, this one is definitely about the past and during a period where it seemed like the main person in my life at the time was living just to make my life hell. No better way to describe that one.
4. Uncivil Warold
Speaking of engaging thematic content, here's a song that will resonate with anyone who's ever looked at the world's military conflicts with a squint eye. There's something horribly primitive about war at its core, a regression from those higher faculties of reason, diplomacy, and clever problem solving that would otherwise distinguish us as human beings. "Millions of people, thousands of kids, countless murders, millions are spent." The repeated triplet notes on guitar, bass, and drums mime artillery fire, while Bloodshot laments: "Always in battle, no end in sight, the last place an outsider will ever make right."
"Uncivil Warold" is purposely misspelled, because the second word is a combination of "war" and "world." Being in the military gives you a different view on things, and this one started as somewhat of a commentary on wars in the Middle East. As we came close to finishing it up, the Russia invasion of Ukraine started and it fits into the same sort of mindframe. It is mostly commentary on how there are unfortunately people that think it is our country's job to teach other countries how to behave or think, and it is almost always fruitless and very expensive both monetarily and in terms of lives.

5. Beaten Into Rebellion
The compositional style and singing inflection of this number reminds me of Prong's Tommy Victor. It's got one of those choruses you can easily give a hearty hellllll yeah..
Everyone has something that seems to constantly brow beat you until you rebel against it. "Beaten Into Rebellion" is one of those songs that was unintentionally one size fits all. I think the less I say about this the better, because it would shrink the possible size and scope of meaning to people.
6. Worn And Torn
Another dirty punk-thrash number, with a stinging solo and guitar tone that feels as misty as an October shower.
"Worn And Torn" was written prior to the band. It's me in the last year or so of my marriage trying to keep it together and continually searching for reasons or things to hold onto to keep trying. Songs like this I hope people hear and connect with and find some sort of solace, knowing that they are not the only ones feeling like this or in this position.

7. Inside The Outside
Jared's vocals here seem to tap into the rebellious spirit of Nirvana's Bleach. The chorus is addictive and I suspect you will find yourself sporadically singing it whilst folding your laundry.
"Inside The Outside" started with drummer JB's band War Injun. It was a rough demo where the vocalist was sort of just getting ideas, not really any words to it. Our version turned out much different than the original. The title was based on a meme during the plague, where you were allowed to go to a restaurant and eat as long as you were outside but inside a tent, and all the other just crazy things going on in that timeframe. Another one of those songs where hopefully people hear it and adapt it to their experiences or simply enjoy it because people tell us they really dig the groove and sound.

8. Sucking Chest Wound
"Fifteen years and nothing left to say..." This is probably my favorite track of the record. It's grungy as all get-out and has another great chorus. "...with the sunset I ride."
Sucking chest wound is a military term for being shot in the guts while air is coming in and out of the wound. JB was on the money with this one. Lyrics touch on the initial shock of my ex telling me she wanted a divorce and my reaction in the period following. I enjoy playing this one just because of the blues feel (and giving me a break from the harder vocals).
9. Fyre
As we near the album's finish, Bloodshot shift into a groove metal mode. I imagine this as a fitting companion to Lamb of God's "Walk With Me In Hell," chiefly for its dense, rainy guitars and mean vocal approach.
Another purposely misspelled word, because no one could outdo the version correctly spelled by Jimi Hendrix. I wrote this shortly before the band got together, it’s commentary on when all of the 2020 riots were going on and everything seemed to continue in the direction of anarchy in one way or another. This one is kind of humorous to me, because I wouldn’t be able to perform it in a theater as I think there’s still some sort of law where you’re not allowed to yell the word “fire” in a crowded theater!
10. Sins of the Father
"This ship is going down, because you wear the crown." Things draw to a close with the somber title track, a grim reminder of the power of influence we all wield with the younger generation. Vocals are a mix of clean and dirty, accompanied by a "Bury Me In Smoke" kind of marching rhythm and some punchy bass notes. The guitar once again shines, accenting the song with steely, rhythmic nu-metal touches.
"Sins of the Father" is our deepest and most layered song, and probably what a lot of bands would consider their "baby." It was a late entry into the setlist and we named our CD after it. Just like the layering instrumentally, it also layered with meaning. As a parent you want to do your best to not sew bad seeds into your children. Whether it be bad habits or behavior, you want to live your best so they don’t inherit the dumb things that were afflicted upon you as a child. When we started, my guitarist asked me if I wrote stupid lyrics about dragons and such. I replied, “There are plenty of real monsters in the world to write about; no need to write about mythical ones.”
Sins of the Father by Bloodshot sees its wide release on September 15th via Nervous Breakdown Records (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist with Megadeth, Prong, Corrosion of Conformity, Helmet, and Meshuggah. This is the Doomed & Stoned world premiere.

KORPIKLAANI | release new digital single Jägermeister + reveal new drummer

Finnish folk metal heroes KORPIKLAANI, who are currently preparing for two Russian shows with Trollfest set to happen today and tomorrow, today release their new digital single Jägermeister and also wish to extend a very warm welcome to their new drummer Samuli Mikkonen! KORPIKLAANI stated: "Every journey has a beginning and an end. After 17 years and many good memories, Matson leaves Korpiklaani. Our new drummer is Samuli Mikkonen. Samuli is formerly known from Profane Omen and Jonne. He already drummed on our Kulkija album, as he played some of the tracks on the record. Samuli has also been a fill-in live drummer for Battle Beast. Samuli is an energetic drummer with a bombastic playing style. Just wait and see!"
Samuli commented: "I could not be more honoured and excited to become a part of Korpiklaani. My journey with this music started when I joined the Jonne band back in 2013. I had a musical connection with Jonne right away and we began to make songs together. When Korpiklaani was making Kulkija in Petrax Studios in autumn 2017, I was asked to fill in for some songs. At the end of the day I had recorded drums for Neito, Aallon alla, Harmaja, Kotikonnut and Tuttu on tie. I was enjoying the music and we had a great time with the band in the studio. I´m very proud of that album. I have been following the band for two decades now and I´m very thrilled to have a chance to play all those great songs live. See you on the road!"

July 1, 1999
A gay couple, Gary Matson and Winfield Mowder, are shot to death in bed at their home near Redding, Calif. Days later, after tracking purchases made on Mowder's stolen credit card, police arrest brothers Benjamin Matthew Williams and James Tyler Williams. At least one of the pair, Matthew Williams (both use their middle names), is an adherent of the anti-Semitic Christian Identity theology. Police soon learn that the brothers two weeks earlier carried out arson attacks against three synagogues and an abortion clinic in Sacramento. Both brothers, whose mother at one point refers in a conversation to her sons' victims as "two homos," eventually admit their guilt — in Matthew's case, in a newspaper interview. Matthew, who at one point badly injures a guard in a surprise attack, commits suicide in 2002. Tyler, who pleads guilty to an array of charges in the case, is given two sentences amounting to 50 years to be served consecutively.

Once upon a time, there lived a knight... In the shadows of a castle, Aire is a man of the wind. He’s a man who sees through Aspen’s treachery. He’s the relentless knight who pursues her. Once upon a time, there lived two enemies... In a fairytale woodland, a pair of mismatched souls are thrown together—only to find an unexpected bond. Both deceitful and passionate.
Why we love it:
beautiful, poetic prose
interesting, unusual take on Pinocchio
flawed, engaging characters who develop over the course of the book
their banter is entertaining as hell
heroine’s “skin condition” (so to speak) is not magically healed (at least not permanently) - she learns to love herself instead
Trigger warnings: ableism

Synopsis:
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?
Why we love it:
memorable cast of characters - likeable and morally grey villains, badass women
anti-hero story
a gripping, twisted tale of jealousy, ambition, murder, revenge and superpowers
interesting narrative style with timeline jumping back and forth fluidly with different perspectives
SO. MUCH. TENSION
Trigger warnings: domestic abuse, suicide, attempted rape, drug abuse, graphic violence

Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Paranormal, Romance

Synopsis:
Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left. Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road, the boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane. Ox was seventeen when he found out the boy’s secret, and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega. Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces. It’s been three years since that fateful day—and the boy is back. Except now he’s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.
Why we love it:
so many family feels!
highlights the importance of friends/family/people in your life that are not blood-related
MATES (we do love a WELL-done mates trope)

Synopsis:
Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.
Why we love it:
beautifully haunting prose
set during WWII
two parallel stories that intertwine briefly towards the end
poetically written and full of rich details
there are so many heartwarming and heartbreaking moments
Trigger warnings: n/a
Fall by Kristen Callihan
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Contemporary

Synopsis:
The first time I met Jax Blackwood things went a little sideways. In my defense, I didn’t know he was Jax Blackwood—who expects a legendary rock star to be shopping for groceries? More importantly, a blizzard was coming and he was about to grab the last carton of mint-chocolate chip. Still, I might have walked away, but then he smugly dared me to try and take the coveted ice cream. So I kissed him. And distracted that mint-chip right out of his hands. Okay, it was a dirty move, but desperate times and all that. Besides, I never expected he’d be my new neighbor. An annoying neighbor who takes great pleasure in reminding me that I owe him ice cream but would happily accept more kisses as payment. An irresistible neighbor who keeps me up while playing guitar naked–spectacularly naked–in his living room. Clearly, avoidance is key. Except nothing about Jax is easy to ignore—not the way he makes me laugh, or that his particular brand of darkness matches mine, or how one look from him melts me faster than butter under a hot sun. Neither of us believes in love or forever. Yet we’re quickly becoming each other’s addiction. But we could be more. We could be everything. All we have to do is trust enough to fall.
Why we love it:
story written with SO MUCH feeling
deals with depression in a realistic way
wonderfully painful and satisfying slow-burn
actual relationship buildup, unlike the usual instalove that we see a lot in contemporaries
characters that feel very real and utterly relatable
“musician” aspect of the story is not just there, it’s a focus of some scenes
interesting and entertaining secondary characters
makes us long for the next installment!
Trigger warnings: mentions of suicide, depression

Synopsis:
After dumping her boyfriend, Nicole Franklin impulsively jumps on a plane and heads to Europe. Sure, money and a job would have been nice to line up first. Even a visa, for that matter. So now she has to play tour guide at an Outlander experience for the most obnoxious man on the planet. Until she stumbles into the wrong bed in the middle of the night and wakes up in Harrison’s arms. Now his family thinks they’re engaged, and the entire village is betting on how long before she’ll be running for the hills. Harrison Troy has a reputation in the town for burning through assistants. And the bubbly new one he’s just hired is likely no different. But his family quickly has them “engaged.” He should be upset, but she’s the perfect buffer for his interfering family. She says she doesn’t need another man in her life--even if he comes with a castle--and that’s fine with him. So why can’t he stop thinking about the woman who is charming everyone in the town, and maybe even him?
Why we love it:
fake dating trope
set in Scotland
crazy adorable family
so many outlander and Jamie/Claire references
Trigger warnings: n/a
Dating the Enemy by Nicole Williams
Genres: Adult, Romance, Contemporary

Synopsis:
Ms. Romance, Hannah Arden, writes one of the top read relationship advice columns in the nation. Mr. Reality, Brooks North, writes the top read relationship advice column. Ms. Romance believes in true love and soul mates. Mr. Reality believes love is a term humanity has assigned to the primal instinct to procreate. She believes in fate—he in chance. She knows there’s one right person for everyone—he knows there are multiple ones. The two writers couldn’t be more polarized on relationships. They’re professional rivals, and philosophical antagonists. For eight years, their battles have been fought with words and ink. That changes when they apply for the same position at the World Times and find themselves face-to-face for the first time. Brooks isn’t the sour-faced, antiquity of a man Hannah pictured. And Hannah isn’t exactly the middle-aged shrew with cat hair on her housedress that Brooks imagined either. In lieu of competing for the promotion traditional ways, the two writers are presented with playing the leading roles in a social experiment unlike any before. Can a person be tricked into falling in love? Can a relationship be crafted under the right string of circumstances? Hannah knows the answer. So does Brooks. Agreeing to the terms, the two set out on a three-month dating experiment, live-streamed for the world to watch. All Hannah has to do to win is not fall in love with the narcissistic brute. All Brooks has to do is get the starry-eyed dreamer to fall in love with him. Both are so confident in their philosophies, they expect the challenge to be easy. With the world watching, Brooks and Hannah will be forced to confront their beliefs and conclude, once and for all, who’s right. The answer is one neither of them saw coming.
Why we love it:
fake dating (we do have a weakness for this trope!)
interesting dynamic
likeable characters
The-Ugly-Truth-meets-The-Hating-Game premise
Trigger warnings: n/a
Save The Date by Morgan Matson

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she'll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.
Why we love it:
adorable, intriguing and complex dynamic between Grant siblings
Trigger warnings: n/a
