April & May 2025 Reading Recap

May 2025 Reading Wrap Up

Calculating my word count for fics was nuts. Never doing that again. If this is on your dash you're gonna have to expand this post to get an idea of the ridiculous amount of fan fiction I read.

You see that two week slump? That was because The Dinner took me out. I didn't have anything on hand to recover with, so I pivoted to fan fiction and got sucked down a rabbit hole of fics that I only climbed out by following a tiktok recommendation (never ends well) and listening to the infuriating Poison Ivy (could NOT get my hands on the book or ebook, god knows why). ANYWAY, I decided to calculate how much fan fiction I actually read during those two weeks. This is hard because I will often get several chapters into a fic before I finally admit to myself that it's not worth it to keep going. Because I was too stubborn (or, you know, mentally ill) to do some math to average how many words of those fics I read, I found the actual number. It took three fucking hours, and I'm the only one who's ever going to read this post. Why did I do that to myself. But guess how many words of fan fiction I read in those two weeks. Guess.

1,590,308. That's right, almost 1.6 MILLION. That's longer than the bible. By a lot. That's almost three War and Peaces. That's the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, twice, then The Hobbit, with Of Mice and Men on top. When I say I need to read more published books and less fan fiction, this is what I'm talking about.

At lease I made progress on my annual goals before the descent:

21/75 books total

Didn't read any books I already own, so the total still sits at 2/12 (I really thought I had a copy of The Dinner somewhere but I couldn't find it and ended up getting it from the library)

No award-winning books this month, for a total of 4/5

2/6 books for my Spring 2025 Challenge, which means I've completed it! 🎉 Time to create a Summer Challenge and get it out there

2/10, for a total of 5/10 books for the StoryGraph Genre Challenge

6/30, for a possible total of 21/30 books for my local library’s reading challenge? Like I said in March's wrap up, these numbers are dicey.

2/10 or 2/5 books for StoryGraph’s World Challenge and no books for the Onboarding challenge, for a total of 2/10 or 2/5 books for the World and 1/3 or 1/6 for the Onboarding challenge. I clearly need to divide this section into 7a and 7b, but I will figure out the html for that next month.

If you've miraculously made it this far, thank you! I need external validation for those three hours. Why did I do that to myself.

Fresh Finds - May

But I - Solar. A groovy ballad that starts nice and sweet and then explodes! into a belt-worthy chorus.

S - tripleS. Yes the 1 minute intro song. Sue me okay they have good producers.

Girls Never Die - tripleS. Another great schoolgirl chic title track from the schoolgirl chic queens.

24 - tripleS. What can I say? It's fun and cute.

Armageddon - aespa. Actually releasing title tracks I like for once. Supernova is okay but the Armageddon chorus just goes hard. Whereas Supernova's just feels kinda empty.

Set The Tone - aespa. More great girl crush from them. Standard beat, nothing weird or out of the ordinary, just great girl crush.

Woke Up - XG. I don't even like their rapping all that much but at some point you just gotta respect the vibe.

Ateez just released an EP that I'll include in June's recap. Not sure what else I have to look forward to cause I've stopped keeping track, I just follow r/kpop. Nayeon's second EP, I think. Yeah that's it.
