Book Review: Shadow at the Morgue

After indulging in the wild world of romantasy for a bit, I decided on a pleasant palate cleanser and homecoming by checking out this advanced reader's copy (ARC) from my beloved genre of historical murder mystery.

And wowzers, am I glad I did because "Shadow in the Morgue" by author Cara Devlin, has more than satisfied everything I love. You must read this if you also adore Victorian-era London with super clever female lead defying social norms (e.g., slaying men with fragile egos) by using their skills, intellect and brains to do something other than being domestic slaves to everyone else around them (e.g., elderly and ill relatives/entitled upper class snobs, etc. etc.). Oh, and don't forget traipsing all over crime scenes to the utter chagrin of their brooding, handsome detective inspector counterparts (e.g., definite Phryne and Jack vibes here, folks!!! Not to mention some Bones and Booth vibes too for those in the know).

Definitely pick this up if you want to follow protagonist, Leonora (a.k.a. "Leo") Spencer, morgue assistant to her assistant coroner uncle outwitting Scotland Yard's finest, Detective Inspector Jasper Reid, and his merry constables and sergeants on the heels of a fascinating murder or two (that she, of course, discovered leading clues for).

The author has introduced these new characters in a refreshing way with just enough tantalizing back story to keep the reader going alongside enough clues so that the mystery doesn't overtax the brains either. Mix it all together with the lovely tension and relationship between Leo and Jasper...and voila...I have already started reading Book 2 of this new series because I can't wait to see how things further develop with these two!

The Method of Revenge by Cara Devlin

Spencer & Reid Mystery #2

OMG ~ Brilliant addition to a stellar series ~ The ending took my breath away and left me wanting more ~ WOW ~ Just…W O W!

What I liked: * Leonora “Leo” Spencer: orphaned at nine, lost parents and two siblings, taken in by Uncle Claude and Aunt Flora Feldman, morgue assistant to her uncle, photographic memory, unconventional, reserved, puzzle solver, intriguing, learns something BIG at the end of the book

* Jasper Reid: Detective Inspector, adopted by Chief Superintendent Gregory Reid (deceased) when young, from the streets, an orphan, bright, educated, intelligent, has been spending time with Constance Hayes, reserved, intriguing, conflicted, has secrets that are BIG ~ Oh my!

* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing * That the story feels “of the era” and educates while entertaining

* That Leo is in a job that is atypical for women and does a good job when allowed to

* The mystery of the murders, who was behind them, and the way Leo and Jasper unearthed who was behind them

* The death photographs…creepy enough to tweak a memory and have me looking them up online

* Wanting to know more of the backstory of both Leo & Jasper

* The supporting characters that I hope to see again: Nivedita Brooks (Leo’s friend and a Police Matron, Roy Lewis (detective sergeant, married with family, works with Jasper), Uncle Claude who works in the morgue and trained Leo – what will he do with his wife and when he can’t work anymore, Gregory Reid (deceased - big part of the lives of both Jasper & Leo

* Being able to understand the motivation of the criminals while also hating what they did

* Knowing there is another book to look forward to and wondering what will happen next

What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like

* Thinking about how someone could put monetary gain ahead of the lives of others – and the evil that some did

* Having to wait for book three ;)

Did I like this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series? Definitely!

Character Actor

Norman Alden (born Norman Adelberg, September 13, 1924 – July 27, 2012)  Character actor who performed in television programs and motion pictures. He first appeared on television on The 20th Century Fox Hour in 1957.

Alden appeared in dozens of television series in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1958, he guest-starred in an episode of the CBS situation comedy Mr. Adams and Eve. He was cast in three episodes in 1958 and 1959 of ABC's The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin. He was cast in six guest-starring roles between 1959 and 1962, mostly as Seaman Pulaski, on Jackie Cooper's CBS sitcom/drama, Hennesey. In 1959 and 1960, he was cast as Corporal Lucius Grundy in fifteen episodes of the series Not for Hire. From 1959 to 1961, he appeared as different characters in nine episodes of the NBC crime drama, The Lawless Years. In 1961, he portrayed Shad Welty in the episode "Ordeal at Dead Tree" of the ABC/Warner Brothers western series, Bronco, starring Ty Hardin. Also in 1961, he appeared in the episode "The Four" with Jack Elam in the western series, Lawman, starring John Russell. He guest starred as well on the 1960–1962 CBS sitcom, Pete and Gladys and in a 1964 episode of the CBS sitcom The Cara Williams Show. In 1970, he appeared in an episode of The Silent Force. Alden played the police captain in the 1988 NBC TV movie Man Against the Mob starring George Peppard. He had a small part in an Adam-12 episode on 10/03/1973.

Alden portrayed Johnny Ringo in the 1955 western series, The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, with Hugh O'Brian in the title role. Alden also played in Barnaby Jones in the episode titled, "The Last Contract" (12/31/1974). Alden played Coach Leroy Fedder in the 1970s television series, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. He also voiced the ringmaster, Hank, on the animated television series Devlin.  The actor also played a former cop bent on getting his revenge against Steve McGarrett in the season 4 episode of Hawaii Five-O called, "Rest in Peace, Somebody."

Other roles that he has portrayed include the AC Delco repairman, Lou the Mechanic for seven years in a series of advertisements, Professor Frank Heflin in Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, both Aquaman and Green Arrow in the animated TV franchise Super Friends, and two episodes of The Andy Griffith Show,  In 1976, Alden appeared as Big Daddy Dawson, Flo's first ex-husband on the CBS TV series, Alice (TV series). He was in one episode of Dallas as Senator William Orloff the episode #3 Spy In The House Season 1 aka Mini Series. In Season 1 of The Dukes of Hazzard he played Chief Lacey of the Springville Police in the episode "Deputy Dukes"; he returned to the role in the second-season episode "The Ghost of General Lee".   In 1966 he played The Joker's "Henchman #1" in episodes 25 and 26, titled 'The Joker trumps an ace' and 'Batman Sets the Pace', of the Batman TV series. Babygate

[Este post contiene links que llevan a otros posts hechos por diferentes blogs, pueden acceder a estos tocando en las “(x)” créditos a los propietarios.]

Hay personas que siguen sin entender que algunxs larries no creemos en Babygate porque se dieron una serie de eventos que nos permitieron ver que algo estaba pasando ahí, que nos estaban queriendo decir algo y nosotros debíamos juntar las piezas y comprender el mensaje entero.

No es algo que nosotrxs inventamos porque (cito el famoso argumento) “no comprendemos que las relaciones pueden tener quiebres o separaciones.”

Porque si lo pensamos fríamente: ¿Volverían con la persona con la cual llevaban una relación de 5 años y por un motivo decidieron “separarse” y esta, en vez de tratar de solucionar los problemas salió de fiesta, se fue con una mujer X y la embarazó?  

Esto no es una novela de Wattpad donde Harry vuelve corriendo hacia Louis y lo perdona porque lo ama, es la vida real y hay dos seres humanos con sentimientos de por medio involucrados. Además de que si te tomas el tiempo de buscar momentos de 2015 en los que Harry y Louis estaban juntos se los notaba bien, no sacaban los ojos de encima del otro y hasta reían juntos en las entrevistas. Si ellos hubiesen estado separados en ese entonces se habría notado.

Acá dejo algunos momentos que nos dejo el 2015 para que vean a lo que me refiero:

Volviendo al Babygate:

RBB&SBB nos advirtieron. Louis nos advirtió. 

El test de embarazo, los libros sobre embarazos no deseados, la captura de pantalla de un celular que tenia aplicaciones como “Freddie Day” (por el nombre del nene, que luego fue anunciado por Louis via Twitter) o “Sky News” (Sacaron un articulo sobre la paternidad de Louis al poco tiempo) y muchas advertencias mas.

Hablemos un poco sobre el embarazo de Briana... 

Tenemos dos puntos claves que la dejaron en evidencia: 

Una panza que cambiaba de lugar, aparecía y desaparecía.

¿Cómo es posible que una panza de embarazada de 8 meses desaparezca como si nada y luego vuelva a aparecer?

Una prima loca mandando fotos de otras embarazadas a cuentas de Twitter para que las publicaran diciendo que eran de Briana.

¿Por qué no utilizaban fotos de Briana?

Exacto, porque ella no estaba embarazada.

Por otro lado tenemos a Louis:

El mismo que tiro un muñeco de bebé del escenario y repitió, no una ni dos, sino que TRES VECES que era un bebé falso, algo bastante raro siendo que todas las personas presentes sabían que era un muñeco el que estaba arrojando. 

Tenemos entrevistas en las cuales le preguntaban por su hijo y su expresión se volvía seria y daba las respuestas mas cortas posibles.

¡Hablamos de Louis! una persona que ama a los nenes y siempre se mostraba feliz estando con ellos.

Y para finalizar, obtuvimos otras cosas como:

(Lo que voy a nombrar es lo que a mi, personalmente, me hizo muchísimo ruido)

La reacción de la gente: todos bromearon sobre el embarazo y hasta hacían chistes como que “Harry seria una grandiosa mamá”.

Nadie se tomo en serio toda la situación, porque nadie creía que esto fuera real.  

Dominios comprados por la familia de Briana algunos días después del anuncio del embarazo: Algunos de estos fueron: brianatomlinson.com, onedirectionbaby.com, tomlinsonbaby.com, brianajungwirthbaby.com y así muchísimos mas, llegando al numero de 175 dominios.

Briana volando a Reino Unido: Literalmente voló al otro lado del mundo para desfilar entre la gente en 6 conciertos de One Direction cuando tranquilamente podía haber asistido a uno de los 22 conciertos que dio la banda en Norteamérica. 

¿Cuál fue el propósito de esto? Dar de que hablar. 

La chica Americana que Louis (chico inglés) embarazo, volando a su país con su bebé. Conveniente. 

Belfast: (20/10/2015, único concierto de One Direction cancelado) Creemos que no quisieron subirse al escenario en forma de protesta debido a que el Babygate iba a continuar, y esto quisieron taparlo diciendo que Liam tenia diarrea.

¿EN SERIO? ¿Después de que los vimos en las peores condiciones sobre el escenario cancelaron un show por el cual había 11.000 fans esperando por una diarrea? 

Se deberían haber esforzado un poco mas y darnos una historia aunque sea, un poquito mas creíble.  

Después de esto pasaron otras cosas importantes; salió el videoclip de Perfect, Louis filtro Home y RBB&SBB iniciaron una cuenta regresiva en 5.

Y si traemos Belfast a la actualidad: Tuvo que haber pasado algo suficientemente importante como para que Harry lo ponga en el mapa del video de Adore You.

DESPUES DEL “NACIMIENTO”:

Photoshop: Necesitan que el nene se parezca a Louis lo suficiente como para que las personas sigan creyendo que es su hijo y recurrieron a nada mas y nada menos que el Photoshop.

Déjenme decirles que son PESIMAS haciéndolo. 

Cualquier Manip hecho por fans esta mejor que toda esa edición que hacen sobre la cara del nene, literalmente le pegan fotos de Louis encima y buscan suavizar un poco, a veces se les va la mano y hasta le sacaron partes del cuerpo.

Devlin: Sabemos que nada de lo que Louis hace es casualidad, y en 2017 felicito via Twitter a Devlin por su nuevo álbum, el cual contenía una canción con unos lyrics bastante llamativos, acá esta la explicación: (x)  

Billie Jean: Una vez mas, Louis lo hizo. En el video de Back To You utilizo una remera con una foto de Michael Jackson, la cual pertenecía al video de Billie Jean, otra canción con lyrics demasiado interesantes, explicación: (x)

Louis tiro shade al Babygate en todas las oportunidades que tuvo, pero hay gente que todavía se niega a verlo.

Esto es algo super resumido que hice donde nombre las cosas que para mi son demasiado llamativas. Como aclare al inicio, van a encontrar los links de los posts donde están las explicaciones completas.

Pueden tocar acá: (x) para encontrar una recopilación de todos los masterposts del Babygate, me ayude mucho de esto para escribir esto.

Es importante informarse sobre el tema para poder mantener una postura y es algo que muchas personas no hacen debido a que prefieren tragarse la historia que nos quisieron vender porque piensan que las personas que no creemos en Babygate estamos mal, cuando solamente vemos el trasfondo de todo y captamos las señales que nos dieron. 

Si estas buscando informarte sobre esto no dejes que te influencien personas diciéndote que esta mal o algo por el estilo, primero lee toda la información que te brindan los diferentes blogs y después decidí si seguir creyendo o no. De esa manera por lo menos leíste argumentos de personas que no creen y pudiste comprender porque no lo hacemos. 

Solo quería aportar un poco y dar mis razones por las cuales no creo en este gate. Espero que los links les sirvan y puedan aclarar sus dudas :)

AN: So this takes place in an alternate universe where although Raul and Joaquin were kidnapped by El Hijo, they did not join him. In fact, El Hijo ended up sending Raul to Karrion Kross and Scarlett to brainwash him, which was broken by Austin as seen in this fic.

Despite this, Raul does reveal that it wasn’t Kross and Scarlett who initially kidnapped him, which was supported by Joaquin who had no connection to Kross and Scarlett. After El Hijo won the title, Raul realized that it was him who had kidnapped him. Joaquin supported this and Jake Atlas revealed it to Triple H as seen here.

Two weeks before this fic, Jordan returned to get his title back and confronted El Hijo, revealing to the NXT universe that it was El Hijo who kidnapped Raul and Joaquin as seen here.

It was another night of NXT and the opening match. A handicap match, but a unique variation of it. Instead of two heels versus a face, it was instead one heel versus two faces, at the request of the heel.

“This match is unprecedented in NXT, El Hijo del Fantasma is in a handicap match against the team of Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde, take a look to last week at how this all developed,” Mauro said as the package began.

“I know you are all wondering if the claims that Jordan Devlin made last week were true, if El Hijo del Fantasma really was the one to kidnap Raul and I. He was, I remember his voice and so does Raul. We barely escaped, it took us a while to remember who he was, though,” Joaquin Wilde stood in the ring, microphone in hand. Raul Mendoza stood next to him, one arm around his girlfriend, Austin Flynn.

“He thought we were a threat, so he decided to take us out,” Raul added.

“Luckily, it didn’t work. But when that didn’t work, he tried to force us to join him,” Joaquin said, his lips curling in distaste. Raul’s expression hardened at that, “He threatened those we love.”

At those words, El Hijo del Fantasma’s music hit and the heel luchador walked out, clicking his tongue briefly.

“Raúl, deberías haberte unido a mí.  Los dos deberían haberlo hecho.  Pudimos haberlo tenido todo.  No la necesitas. (Raul, you should have just joined me. Both of you should have. We could have had it all.  You don’t need her.),” El Hijo said, climbing into the ring.

“¿Quieres decir esa a mi cara?  Porque el tonto de las noticias, yo también sé español. (You want to say that to my face? Because newsflash jackass, I know Spanish too)” Austin said, smirking at the surprised look on El Hijo’s face.

“I took you two because I wanted to help you. I see potential in you two, but alas. You didn’t want my help, so you are nothings. I could beat you both at once. You could even tag together and I would still beat you,” El Hijo said with a shrug.

“Is that a challenge?” Raul said.

“If you take it as such, I’ll be here next week. If not, well…” El Hijo just shrugged again before walking off.

“On their twitters, both Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde confirmed that they would be fighting against El Hijo del Fantasma in this handicap match,” Beth said as Joaquin’s music hit and he came out.

“The following is a two-on-one handicap match. Introducing first, from Chicago, Illinois….Joaquin Wilde!” The ring announcer said Joaquin made his way down to the ring, his lips pursed unhappily. Raul’s music hit as the ring announcer spoke once more, “And his partner, from Córdoba, Veracruz Mexico….Raul Mendoza!” Raul stepped out, Austin next to him.

“I’ve got this, mi amor. It’s alright,” Raul murmured. Austin pursed her lips but nodded. Raul cupped her face gently, kissing her softly.

“I’ll see you after the match,” Austin whispered before hugging him and heading back to the back. Raul headed out to the ring, nodding at Joaquin briefly. Both glared at the front as El Hijo’s theme hit.

“And their opponent, from Mexico City, Mexico…..El Hijo del Fantasma!” The heel made his way to the ring and climbed in, facing the two down.

“I’ll go first,” Raul muttered to Joaquin. Joaquin nodded and slipped out of the ring, Raul facing down El Hijo. The referee nodded to the timekeeper’s area and the bell rang. The two began to fight, Joaquin watching closely. Neither Raul nor Joaquin were really into the idea of doing a handicap match, but they both wanted El Hijo to be defeated.

Tags were made sparingly, usually when one was thrown into their corner. It was after one of these tags, Joaquin tagging in Raul, when El Hijo hit Raul with a headbutt followed by a super kick. Raul stumbled back briefly before running at El Hijo, hitting him with a step up enziguri. El Hijo stumbled back as Raul grabbed him, preparing to hit him with his finisher, a double knee backbreaker called ‘fin de la anguistia’ (end of heartache). As he went for the pin, the two masked men who had kidnapped both Raul and Joaquin appeared and one pulled Joaquin off the apron. Raul stood, turning his head to check on his partner when El Hijo grabbed him, throwing him into the referee before throwing him out of the ring.

With the referee knocked out, El Hijo and his masked men began beating down Raul and Joaquin as the crowd booed them. El Hijo laughed as he grabbed Raul by the head, throwing him into the barrier.

“I am the King! The son of the Fantasma!” El Hijo yelled as he threw Raul back into the ring. The two masked men continued beating up on Joaquin before Austin Flynn came running out. Jumping onto one of the barriers, she swanton bombed off of it, landing on the group of three men. Rolling to her feet, Austin began attacking the two masked men as Joaquin slowly made his way back to his feet.

“Go! Get back up to the apron!” Austin yelled to him. Joaquin nodded and jumped back onto the ring apron, making a tag.

“Mi amor, estas bien? (My love, are you alright?)” Raul said, leaning over the rings to look at his girlfriend.

“I’m fine, mi tesoro (my treasure). Just kick his ass!” Austin said, her Texas accent thickening in her anger. Raul nodded as El Hijo grabbed him.

“Take her down!” El Hijo yelled to the masked men. The two nodded and began approaching Austin before Taynara Conti, Vanessa Borne, and Aliyah ran down, joining their friend and fellow Team TAAV member as they fought off the masked men. El Hijo turned to check on the masked men as Joaquin grabbed him, hitting him with a DDT. Joaquin rolled to his feet and tagged Raul in. Raul jumped onto the ropes and used them to slingshot himself at El Hijo, hitting him with a 450 splash and getting the pin.

“Your winners, the team of Joaquin Wilde and Raul Mendoza!” The ring announcer said as the referee lifted their hands. The moment their hands were back down, Raul slid out of the ring, heading to the standing Team TAAV.

“You alright?” Raul asked, pulling Austin into a hug. Austin wrapped her arms around him, nodding.

“Mhmm, just glad you kicked his ass,” she said.
