I wrote a new blog post and I thought I would share it here.

Recently, I saw an autistic person post something with a thesis like this: "Writers shouldn't portray autistic characters as socially oblivious because it lets non-autistics off the hook for being cruel to us. Autistic people are painfully aware of the ableism and bullying we experience."

And while I agree about holding people accountable, the truth is that some of us really do grow up pretty clueless. Like me.

So I wrote this post. It's about what it was like for me to grow up with little social awareness. Autism is complex and there is no single story. And all of us, clueless or not, deserve to be treated fairly.

How To Paint: Canopy Glass Pt. 3

After a catastrophic absence (I was taking care of a very nice but grabby dog) the series is back! So far we've done cockpits an easy way with normal paint and an easy way with contrast paint. This time around, we'll be looking at the way I do some of my more complex colored cockpits. I apologize for some of the photography on this one- not all of the steps were properly recorded.

Paints I used:

For the Starslayer I chose to go with a orange/yellow tint for the glass, however you can easily adapt this to any dark -> bright paint gradient you like. Make sure your darkest color is something neutral- I usually like deep browns for hot colors and a deep sea green like incubi darkness for cool colors.

Once you finish the rest of the model area around the canopy, begin by base coating it with your dark brown paint with two thin coats. Once this is applied and dry you're going to paint one of the bottom corners of the canopy glass in with your brown paint.

Now unfortunately this next section is both the most fiddly part of the process and the one past-me forgot to take any pictures of. We're going to use a glazing method to build up a color transition from one side of the canopy to the other. First, we'll make a mixture of about 2 parts of our thinning medium with one part of our brown. Then we'll load the thinned paint onto a medium sized and dab off most of the runny excess on our palette- you want the brush to still be damp and have a little color but not leave a visibly wet trail if you drag it across your fingernail. Then with our brush we're going to gently paint in this very thin brown over the dark brown everywhere but the top corner opposite our brown bottom corner. Give the paint a few minutes to dry and then repeat, except this time paint even less of the upper corner area, leaving some of the previous thinned brown layer exposed. Continue this process multiple times, painting less and less of the canopy each time to build up a smooth transition of brown.

I have done this process with just water before and while it does work I find thinning medium works way better.

Next, we'll apply the same technique again but covering an even smaller area using our orange. Mix it with our thinning medium in a 1:2 ratio and repeat the glazing process, focusing just on the lower corner of the canopy. Make sure to leave a small border of brown showing on the bottom and side of the orange. You should have a soft gradient from dark brown to burnt orange across the canopy.

Finally some finishing touches. Take your bright orange paint, thin it, and sketch an 'L' outlining the orange you just glazed on. Then add a dot of yellow in the corner of the 'L' and dot the upper dark brown corner with a little bit of white.

And here's the finished product! This is fundamentally a similar technique to the method I used on the Firefly with some extra tricks and it inherits the strengths and weakness of it- as a flat painting technique this works easiest on models with simple cockpit geometry and straightforward sight lines, but because it's a more labor intensive technique it's best used on models where you want to draw the eye to the head.

Ghosts & Medium AU Drabble - New Haunting

I am back :3 With a continuation of the drabble where Killer and Dust meet!

Dust sighs as he reads his notes over.

Ash grumbles from beside him "At least eat your breakfast."

Dust shrugs but blindly grabs the cinnamon roll to nimble on as he checks the notes he made.

Almost a week had passed. A WEEK!

And Dust still hadn't managed to get Killer to leave the house. Which is unusual for him. Most of the time it takes him a day or two to get the ghost to move on. Three if it is a hard case.

Killer?

Killer does not seem any closer to moving on.

At least Dust didn't get a migraine from being around him anymore. As he normally gets that after long exposure to new spirits.

Sadly instead he gets a headache from the other's constant flirting and pickup lines.

Ash sighs "Can't we just write this off as a lost cause? Tell the family to stay somewhere else for a bit until he moves on himself?"

Dust is honestly considering it at this point. He is starting to think tha tKiller jsut doesn't want to move on. and the poltergeist is stubborn. If he doesn't want to go he clearly isn't going.

Dust sighs "I am honestly considering it..." he reads his list over again. it isn't as if he hadn't figured it out by now. Killer had a very... violent past. He worked for many people and had very little freedom for himself. something went wrong and he was tortured before being left to die somewhere alone.

Dust had figured all of that out at this point. but nothing could get him to move on.. because in a lot of ways.. Killer had already moved on from that past. Even if some fears remained but those are normal, even for living people.

Dust sighs as he puts his things away "at least Killer is mostly docile now. I will just tell the family i couldn't fix it and advice them to stay out for a bit. Let killer think the family moved out and move on to a new spot."

Ash nods "make it someone elses problem."

Dust frowns as he rubs his arm "i don't know..."

ash sighs "hey i know. you cant fix all the ghosts."

They get to the house and Dust has a conversation with the family. explain he can't fix it but that moving out and leaving the house empty for a while could pursuade the ghost to leave. Dust advices them to make a show of packing their things and to just sleep over at a friends place for a while.

The family isn't happy. but are willing to try it.

Dust watches them move stuff and their bags to their car as he goes in to say his own goodbyes to Killer. wish him the best and then leave himself.

Dust takes a seat at the coffee table and Killer is immediantly in his personal bubble with a large smile "Hey!! I was wondering when you would get here." he grins and winks "you just can't stay away from me and my charms." and he winks again.

Killer does that a lot. the winking.

Dust shrugs "only fair to come by and finish stuff up."

Killer blinks and freezes "waht?"

dust tilts his skull "the family is leaving after all... they hired me to talk with you and stuff. try and get you to leave. I can't make you leave."

Killer frowns and grows quiet. clearly processing the news. Dust told him ages ago that he had been hired to help get killer to move on. Killer had been more worried about the fact that dust was working for someone over the whole exorcising thing.

Killer frowns "but... if the family leaves... you can just move in!" and he grins widely "You can stay here with me!"

Dust tilts his skull "I got my own home. I can't stay."

Killer frowns more and the red target, that had started to show off a soul shape before, becomes a target again as the black sludge gets worse.

Killer is looking from side to side as he frowns. clearly thinking and planning quickly.

Killer frowns as he floats closer "When would you be back?"

Dust blinks as Ash makes a groaning sound behind him "Of coruse you get a clingy ghost."

ironic seeing as Ash is the most clingy of them all but Dust doesn't say that instead he answers killer "I... would likely not come back... I go where i can get jobs and work..."

Killer shakes his skull and mutters things "We can't do that! long distance relationships are much more likely to fail than normal relationships."

Dust blinks "euh.. what now?"

Killer points between himself and dsut "our relationship obviously!! We only jsut started this! we can't complicate things with long distance!"

Dust suddenly feels like he missed some very important information along the way "we... aren't dating?"

Killer shoots him a grin and floats closer "obviously not quite. but we are now in the phase of the 'will they won't they' so it is important we keep interacting and spend time together!"

Dust looks unsure at Ash but his brother isn't much help as ash just stares at killer as if killer is an idiot. Dust looks forwards himself "euh... it... wouldnt work? You are a ghost? I am still very much alive..." and not plannign on changing that anytime soon. mostly because Ash will END him if Dust did something stupid and got himself killed.

Killer grins and winks "oh bunny. Of course we can make it work."

Yeha Dust thinks he lost the plot of this a while ago. he tries to get the focus back to the point he was trying to make "anyway... I need to go... I still need to get work to pay for things... It was nice to meet you killer and-"

Killer gasps loudly "That is it!" he points at Ash "That is the answer!"

Ash looks confused as well "what."

Killer nods and flies straight at Dust and dust yelps as killer just flies through him.

Dust shudders at the feeling of cold and the different energy not to forget the flashes of Killer's past life. too fast for him to keep track off and mostly just overwhelming.

Killer grins "That should have been enough!"

Dust shoots him a glare as he rubs his sternum. "What was that for?!" Ash hovers near him worried as his brother looks him over.

Killer grins and waits.

Dust frowns but then he feels it.

Oh... Oh no.

Killer grins "oh yes!" he nods "You couldn't stay meanign it was me who would ahve to move! But anchoring myself to all kinds of places and moving that the whole time would get annoying. sooo!! I did what your brother did!"

Ash screeches "You did what?!"

Yup. That are two links now. Two different spirits are both using him as an anchor to remain.

Fucking hell.

Tarot Tips: How to Spot Soul Connections

In my readings, these are the main give aways about spiritual relationships (soul-contracts). Mind that I am taking into account only upright positions.

Short Guide on Mediumship.

How to actually communicate with the "dead" and how to know if they're actually there.

First of all, Happy Halloween and listen carefully because most of these are crucial. I have been gifted at the age of four, thinking my ability was merely imagination, but most of the coincidences that occur to me have become frequent. Now, this is an ACTUAL way to identify 'dead people' but rather spirits and how to communicate with them. Take note, not all spirits will communicate the same way. PLEASE DO NOT EVER. EVER. Use this as an entertainment guide. It's rather offensive, and this was not written for entertainment but educational purposes and based on experience, and it is not used to call out or shame any paranormal entertainers.

How to identify a Spirit?

Strange Smells that aren't there. (Most Common Scents: Fresh Blood (Almost Sweet), Floral (Powdery Floral Scent), Garbage, Cold Air

Auditory: Mostly Laughter or Footsteps

Peripheral: Sights of Shadows Passing By (Commonly Found Passing to Bathrooms or Any Room That's Dark/Quiet or with Mirrors), Bright Orbs, Figures (May Be Objects)

Shift in Temperatures : Commonly, a cold room or cold breeze.

How to Communicate/ How Do They Communicate?

Firstly, I want to remind you of the rules. Be respectful, do NOT taunt the spirits, set boundaries, do not let them touch you, or give them permission to interact or harm you, and don't ask how they died or when (most of them are unaware of it and it may offend them or cause a harmful mood. This is for especially wondering spirits.) Another thing to remind you, is do not force them to interact if they don't want to. You can't always expect a reaction as not all of them are the same. Some are weaker. Spirits are more active around November 1st on an evening.

Divination: You can use tarot cards, which I recommend the most. The Ouija Board is just another form of divination, and the glass of the board is what helps them communicate as it is a symbol of another world and also used as portals.

Dreams: This one is the most dangerous one. They can actually harm you, and I have been attacked once.

Mind: This is the most common one used by spirits, including trickster spirits. Have you ever 'talked' to yourself, and sometimes you ask questions that only another person could know with the knowledge of that question. You could possibly be communicating with an entity, and yes, it is possible to summon them by thinking about them. There have actually been stories of this, and it's quite common to be noted as a 'miracle'.

Objects: Some used objects are the ones with electricity and, most commonly, EMF meters. The reason they are used is because our body releases something like electricity. That's why sometimes you may end up zap people with that charged energy.

Honestly, I'm of the opinion that if you want to 'elevate' quick grits on a budget you really don't need the added dairy (I mean, it's great, but sometimes you ain't got it).

BUT you do need to treat them like polenta and cook a little lower heat and be prepared to keep it moving to help agitate and release those starches that make for a good creamy consistency. (This is, in fact, the trick to all those really good creamy, thick, grain foods like oatmeal and risotto, too. Slower cooking with more agitation is what brings out all those starches into your cooking liquid and turns it creamy)

What kind of ink do you use or recommend as a starter?

I use a lot of different inks and have no specific brand recommendations, only that all of them are fountain pen inks. Maybe only for waterproof inks - I use Tramol inks for linework all the time, and I'm quite happy with them. It's not easy to find nice waterproof inks and in a wide range of colors too.

If you just wanna try out inks as a medium and see some of its unique qualities, I think I can safely recommend one of these 4, whatever colour seems more appealing to you. All of them are very well-behaved, easy to get, have some great chromatography and reaction to bleach. The ornament on top is done with a bleach (any household liquid bleach will do) and the paper here is Baohong S8 grain satin.

If I had to pick a personal favorite, that would be Parker Quink Black hands down, it's my favorite ink of all time. I use it absolutely always, either in mixes or on its own.

BUT I must warn you, because I barely see it mentioned anywhere - Quink Black also has a washable version. It's written on the packaging with a small font. Washable Black is also a gorgeous color, but it's significantly lighter and warmer than the regular Quink Black, almost olive in tone.

And the regular ink also seems to have some little variation in colour - this is my second bottle of Quink Black, and the first one, which I bought a few years ago, is a bit bluer and has a little less chromatography. The difference isn't too drastic, but still noticeable. 

Inks are also extremely sensitive to the paper used, much more than the watercolour or other similar mediums. Paper can change the ink's tone and behavior quite drastically. Here's an example of the very same ink swatched on 4 different papers:

So my suggestion is to test whatever paper you have in your possession to see what works the best for you. 

I'm so cheering for you to play with some inks, it's fun even if you don't draw anything in particular. Just wet the paper, add a few drops of ink on it and see the magic happen!
