We’re all on social media, and we’re always on the lookout for groups around the interwebs that house people with similar interests to us. We comment on forum boards and say our thoughts in the replies of various blog posts, but what’s the best way to make your own social network that is engaging and people will use?

Since 2016, I, and AC0/RD have used Wordpress (a content management system that incidentally is the software used for over 25% of the world’s websites) for our social media. I never paid much attention to the comments system on Wordpress, because the main stuff happened on the forums, and I considered the comments section to just be for non-members posting comments on the blog posts (at the time, our website was entirely log-in only and that’s why comments were not high up on the priority list for us). However, comments systems like Disqus can be used for a type of forum, and that’s one of the things I’ll be talking about in this post.
Things a social network need:
Your website is a social network if it has any of the following types of user interaction:
Games - for example web-based RPGs
Comments sections - mainly used in blog posts
Q&A Forums
Support Forums
Community Forums
User profiles
User gamification
User groups

I’m going to over each of these in-depth over the course of this post. I’d also recommend checking out my post on HTML dashboards as it’s a good way to get all the community traffic in one place.
Most platforms that are used by developers can do most of the things mentioned above, but it can take a bit of fiddling around if you use a static site platform like Bootstrap, Jekyll or GoHugo. I’d recommend checking out Codepen for code snippets, which you can then modify yourself to fit your needs. If you’re using Wordpress or another CMS, it’s easy enough to set-up - just install a plugin like Buddypress or PeepSo. You do want to make sure that you don’t have too many plugins installed on Wordpress, though, as it runs the risk of your site loading incredibly slowly (at our “peak”, the AC0/RD website was taking upwards of 15 seconds to load)…

Live Project #3 - UK Tipster
Project Origins
At the end of January I added a very young business on one of my social medias, their services were offered exclusively through social media, snapchat to be exact.
This option was functional and successful for increasing followers but made their processes much less efficient and conveyed they were missing some professionalism.
They were calling out to their followers for a designer / web designer whom could create websites / advertisements for them. I made them aware that I was taking projects and i'd be happy to help.
They made me aware that they'd already found a web designers so they didnt need my assistance. I had a great logo design idea for them, they were currently missing branding. So, I offered my branding services for cheap and showed them my idea.
They were very impressed and accepted the offer.
UK Tipster Branding
Below is my initial branding sketches for UK Tipster.

Then I digitised the logo design using illustrator. I composed the main structure of the logo first, merging the 'U' and the 'K'.

Project Breakdown
Following the creation of the logo, the guys at UK Tipster were really impressed with my logo designs and they also enjoyed talking to me. Therefore, they decided that they would prefer me to design their website and advertisements.
They needed a membership website where content would be hidden unless clients had a paid membership. They also needed a system to post daily tips for their customers. Contact details and advice would also be included in the website. They needed advertisements to go with the launch too.
I discussed this all with them and then asked for a night to research and confirm that I’d be able to do it. I spend the night researching ways which I could do this using Webflow and other software integrations with it.
The solutions I found were:
- Webflows integrations to Memberstack or Memberspace for the membership and payment functionality.
- Webflow CMS is the solution for posting daily content.
- I can do all other aspects using webflows core tools.
I broke my plan down to them step by step as you can see below. They then accepted and I decided to write up a contract for the project.
Below is a text from me to the client which I’ve copied into there...
“Yeah I can do it. To break it down for yous....
-I’ll create and host the website for yous using Webflow.
-I will then add you both as clients, you can then fill out daily forms with the bets and post them.
-It will fill a template which I design for you. (You can ask me to update it whenever)
This will be posted to members only.
-I/you will use MemberStack for the membership system. (Yous will be able to access all the members information etc on a really simple dashboard on their site.
-Users will create accounts on webflow but all the details and payment go through memberStack which stores all the information.
-once the account is created, they log in daily using email and password, they can then see all the hidden content posted daily. (Btw you can have a free content page too)
-Users can see all their information too, I.e when their membership renews/runs out, profile details etc...
-Webflow hosting will be £10 a month
-memberStack memberships range depending on how much income you make per month. “
Client Contract
Below you can see the contract which I wrote up for the project, I used a template for a basic layout and then tweaked it to suit this project.
I then used a website called DocSketch which allows you link sections of a document to be filled out online by your client. They can also add signatures to the document.

Organisation
To organise the project I used the Milanote platform and I used an AGILE workflow to ensure efficiency and maximum quality of work throughout the project. I also had the whole project broken down on one page, I had all my research, tasks, links and other relevant information in one board specifically for this project. By having all the relevant info in one place I could continuously refer back to it whenever I needed to refresh myself on the project goals or styles.

Research 
I carried out research into a variety of difference aspects for this projects to immerse myself in the market and the style of betting industry. I also needed to look at it from the customers shoes...Why should I pick the UK Tipster?
I researched areas such as:
- Competition (existing tipster sites)
- Bookies Websites/Branding
- What makes a good tipster
I also did plenty of other research into design aspects as well as plenty of software research when I began developing the website. I had never used memberstack or even heard of it so there was large amounts of research into that.

I started by producing a site map for the website, just to clarify the plan for the site.

Mock ups
I took to Adobe XD to design some website mock ups. I started by exploring layout ideas and investigating how I could design the daily betting tips. I also added colours and illustrations to the mock ups as I gradually made them more realistic. 
The mock ups are from an Adobe XD plug in called UnDraw which I am able to use commercially, I have w=tweaked the positioning, style, and colour of many for the website.

Development
I then began developing the website using Webflow which is an extremely powerful web builder which offers massive amounts of freedom in design as well as offering some great development tools. 
I also wrote out all of the content due to the customers being too busy, they just approved it once I did it.

CMS Forms
The daily tips are one of the main aspects of the website, therefore it was essential that I set up the CMS forms to be as simple yet efficient as possible. I had to design all the layouts for the content and then I also had to fill out a form for each page which I then linked each individual form to the text on the template where I wanted it to fill each time.

Logo Improvement and Slogan Design
I still felt there was improvements to be made to the logo and they really liked a slogan which I came up with, so I decided to make them cohesive. Below you can find the developments through variety of different slogan designs. At the bottom you will also see the improved logo along side the final slogan design. I mainly just sharpened the logo, gave it corners rather than rounded edges along with a bold sharp text.

Memberstack Integration
Memberstack was great to use, I did some additional research and watched some tutorials but the checklist on the dashboard made the process much simpler. I then had to add the code from memberstack into each element on my webflow page. It got confusing at times but was definitely worth it.

Testing
This project consisted of vast amounts of testing. I had to test several aspects but the main ones were the upload of daily tips, sign up and login system using Webflow and then the responsivity of the website on different device sizes. 
I had to ensure the CMS Forms which I had set up were all working, below you can see me testing them. I filled out the form with betting information and followed all of the help guidance which I attached to each field of the form. I then published the form and you can clearly see all the information filled out into the correct spots on the page. 
I did this for every form which was a very time consuming project I must say.

Squarespace’s donation system is likewise superior to Wix’s because it goes beyond providing a donation button by offering donor-specific checkout, donor email receipts, and suggested amounts.
Seamless podcast syndication : Starting a podcast? Squarespace also beats Wix’s basic podcast player by being the only one in the industry to offer syndication. With this feature, you can submit your podcast to Spotify or Apple Podcasts where a legion of potential fans can discover you.
Curated third-party apps : Whatever Squarespace lacks in-house, it offers as a third-party extension. Even Wix’s in-house features that Squarespace doesn’t have can be matched by a third-party counterpart so you won’t miss out on anything.
For example, the Wix Events app enables visitors to book tickets online whereas Squarespace can be integrated with Eventbrite to do the same thing. Similarly, integrating Memberstack with Squarespace accomplishes the same thing as the Wix Members app.
Ready-to-use blogging tools : With Squarespace, you can start blogging and showcase your best content to the world right off the bat. Unlike Wix that requires you to install a separate blog app, Squarespace has built-in blogging tools.
Basic features like post tagging, categories, comment moderation, and drafts will help you create professional-looking blogs regardless of your industry. Working with multiple authors is also a breeze as Squarespace allows you to collaborate with them on a single post or assign them different roles.
Sophisticated ecommerce functionality : When it comes to building your online store, Squarespace gives Wix a run for its money. It offers the same basic features you’ll find in Wix like custom email receipts, point of sale system, and automated cart recovery.
To maximize your profits, however, Squarespace steps up its game by offering features that Wix doesn’t. These include gift cards to help with your brand promotion. You can also use “back in stock” and “low stock” notifications to create a sense of urgency without being too pushy.
24/7 online support : Should you encounter technical issues with your Squarespace website, you can reach out to their customer support team via email, Twitter, or live chat. These online channels allow their team to get to the bottom of your issue faster.
Squarespace has excluded phone support because their existing support channels allow them to troubleshoot your issues comprehensively without the need to put you on hold.
Squarespace Losses
Lacks intuitive drag-and-drop interface . Squarespace’s page editor works like a minimalist grid system so you can’t drag and drop elements as freely as you can. Less freedom means less opportunity to play around with the design. It also takes a longer time to get used to so Squarespace is not as beginner-friendly as Wix.
Limited creative control : Squarespace’s biggest advantage is also its disadvantage. The “structured” editor may enable you to customize a website design within the realm of what’s acceptable but it also means you have less creative control.
The templates are on par with professional designs but you can’t edit, move, resize, or re-color the page elements as easily as you can with Wix. You also can’t display both the site title and logo at the same time.
Limited template designs . Fewer design choices also make it more difficult to stand out. Most photographers, for instance, trust Squarespace to host their portfolio sites.
With limited templates to choose from, they’re more likely to pick the same template. As a result, they may end up with portfolio websites that have the same look and feel as other sites in their industry.
Less generous ecommerce plans : Squarespace outnumbers Wix’s ecommerce features but you won’t benefit as much if you’re only subscribed to its basic plan.
Squarespace’s basic ecommerce features cost $18 per month (Business plan) while its Wix counterpart is a tad higher at $23 per month (Basic Business plan). However, you won’t save as much with a basic plan as Squarespace charges a 3% transaction fee unless you upgrade.
You also won’t have access to some crucial features like abandoned cart recovery if you’re not under the Advanced Commerce Plan that costs $40 per month.
By contrast, Wix charges no transaction fee on any of its ecommerce plans and offers abandoned cart recovery even to those in the basic plan.
Wix Wins
Scalable pricing : Wix has a wider range of pricing options so you can start your website anytime and easily scale as it grows. The free plan is available for beginners who are still learning the ropes and are not bothered by Wix-sponsored ads and subdomains.
If you want a custom domain, you can switch to the most basic plan for only $4.50 a month. From here, you can upgrade to any of the three higher website plans or start an online store for as low as $17 per month for the Business Basic Plan. Squarespace, on the other hand, only offers four pricing tiers starting with the Personal plan at $12 per month. It doesn’t come with a free plan and most of the important features are only available in higher plans.
Beginner-friendly interface : Wix’s drag-and-drop editor remains its top selling point. It gives you a template to create a simple website in minutes without learning how to code. Squarespace is also a “no-coding” website builder, but its grid-style editor makes it cumbersome for some beginners. With Wix, you can have full control of the layout and even add functionality by dragging and dropping widgets on your page.
More in-house apps: Name any feature you want your website to have and Wix has an app for it. Do you want to create a forum? Look for Wix Forum in the App Market and install it for free. Planning to add a live chat to connect with your visitors in real-time? Try Wix Chat, another in-house app you can add for free. If none of the built-in Wix apps is what you’re looking for, don’t worry as there are still over 200 free and premium third-party extensions to choose from.
Free email marketing tools : With this built-in feature, you can send email campaigns to your contact list and even create workflows to manage your own sales funnel. Measure how well each of your campaigns is doing through the stats tracker that lets you see how many people open and engage with your emails.
Wix’s email marketing tools are part of the Ascend all-in-one business solution that gives you access to other marketing tools like live chat, social media integration, and SEO tools. The best part is you can have access to a limited number of features for free or upgrade to one of the three paid plans to enjoy the full benefit.
Robust SEO features : Wix has its own game plan to help your content rank high on Google. What’s great is Wix puts all its strategies in one place so users can learn SEO themselves and improve their online presence. The SEO Wiz contains step-by-step tutorials, achievement updates, and tons of other learning materials so you can start improving your site’s visibility even if you never heard about SEO before.
Multiple customer support channels : Unlike Squarespace, Wix offers phone support so you can rest assured that humans and not bots are handling your concern. Wix also provides support through forums, social media, and email but not through live chat. In case you get stuck or confused while working on the page editor, there are small question marks on the screen that you can also click to get quick solutions without leaving the page.
Automatic backup-and-restore feature : Wix is a proactive website builder that anticipates unfortunate events and has developed a counteracting feature in case they happen.
Through Site History which you can find inside your site Settings, you can restore a previous version of your website. You can restore revised versions of your site regardless if it’s saved manually or automatically.
Best of all, the previously saved version of your site can be restored without affecting published blog posts and changes made in your email list.
Wix Losses
Underwhelming template designs : Wix focuses on quantity over quality when it comes to design. Its over 500 customizable templates easily beat Squarespace’s 70+ designs. But with more choices comes more time wasted picking and overanalyzing which one suits a website idea best.
A “quantity over quality” approach also leads to many Wix templates failing to make a great first impression. While there are hidden gems, it takes time to find them as they are outnumbered by generic templates, some of which are downright cheesy.
Unstructured page editor : Wix’s drag-and-drop interface has its own flaws. While it helps even non-pros create websites quickly, the changes you make in the desktop version may not necessarily sync to its mobile version. For instance, when you move an image from the top of the page to the bottom, the same change won’t reflect in the mobile version unless you make the same change twice. With Squarespace’s structured editor, movements are much more restricted but any change you make will reflect in both screens.
Complicated color changes : Wix lacks the preselected color palettes that Squarespace has, so changing text and background colors are not as straightforward. This is the downside of having more freedom to manipulate page elements. You may be free to choose the colors of individual page elements but if you don’t have a background in design, knowing which colors will work best without preset recommendations can be really tough.
Limited bandwidth and storage space : Wix doesn’t have the unlimited resources that Squarespace offers in all its plans. Therefore, the cheaper your Wix plan is, the more restrictions you’ll get on how many files you can store and how much traffic your website can get per day.
Wix’s cheapest plans, Connect Domain and Combo, only offer a bandwidth of 1 GB and 2 GB, respectively. This is enough if your website receives only a handful of visitors per month. However, once a website gets at least 1,000 visitors a day, it will require about 8.5 GB of bandwidth monthly, something that Wix only provides starting with its Unlimited plan that costs $12.50 per month (billed annually).
Mediocre blogging tools : You can create a decent blog with Wix but if you’re looking for more features, you’ll get it from Squarespace. Wix is capable of scheduling posts, adding tags or categories, and saving drafts. However, it doesn’t allow comment moderation so you can’t filter comments and publish only those you approve of. On top of that, Wix doesn’t have a built-in blogging feature. You have to add the free Wix Blog app yourself before you can start creating content.
Limited flexibility for free plans : When you start a free website with Wix, you won’t pay for anything but it comes at the cost of flexibility. The Wix subdomain, ads, and the look of a free site tend to come off a lot less professional. If you want to experiment with a free site, that’s fine, but you’ll have to upgrade to premium Wix plans to really establish your own brand.

I asked Anna Grigoryan, the writer behind the Engineering Growth newsletter. to share  6 communities that will give your SaaS product a boost. These communities will help you during the product development and launch stages and will provide much needed peer and community support.
  Makerpad
Back in the day, having a technical cofounder, or the “tech person” on any startup team was a must-have. VCs wouldn’t take you seriously without one. You literally couldn’t have a product if you didn’t  have a software engineer on your team. Many startups failed because they were not fast enough on the iteration cycle and couldn’t respond to their customers’ demands on time with the right solutions. Well, we’re in 2020 now, and aside the year being a total mess, it’s also the blooming spring for the no-code movement. With tools like Airtable, Coda, Zapier, Webflow, Memberstack, you can build a full-blown two-sided marketplace without having to think about authorization, hosting and the gist like that. 
Makerpad is a paid community for people who want to learn about no code stack. They have a great community and love to spice up the day to day activities with events like hackathons, online boot camps and all. Also, you can hire no-code developers. However, last time I checked (and yes, I sometimes out of sheer curiosity do these kinds of masochistic things 🙂 ) there were 160+ email marketing services. 160 Carl! They all have relatively the same features distributed over 2 or 3 pricing plans (the limit for email sending, scheduling emails, email archive, an API that claims that the emails are not going to spam). Each of them is solving a problem for a specific industry or niche..
Well, how do you stand out in the 160 competitors? There are many ways, and Demand curve is here to help you determine the zillions of options you have in your hands. They are, I believe, the most prominent marketing community out there. You can register and buy one of their courses, which will grant you access to the community automatically, or sign up for a waiting list, in this case, you’ll get in maybe in a week or two. From my experience, their review of my landing pages and sign up forms from their members were hands down the best one yet.
  Leapers
I’ve been working freelance for two years now, and also I’ve been doing solo projects for 6 months. This kind of lifestyle has great days and low days. As a first time founder, especially if you are flying solo like me, you can have those moments when you feel incredibly isolated and lonely. It doesn’t mean you don’t have a supportive family and friends, it’s just sometimes it’s tough to do things alone.
Leapers is the community I didn’t know I needed until I found it on Twitter. Their primary focus is to help freelancers and solo founders to keep in check with their mental health, support each other and be helpful during those lonely times. This is a place where you can come and rant about your shady customer or wrong sales funnel, and here you can also find great collaboration opportunities. 
Being solo is possible, and I’m here to tell you that you definitely can do anything you want alone, but it doesn’t have to be sad and lonely. Check out their mental health guides, and you’ll see why I love them. 
  Yourstack
Someone described this community as “Tweeter meets ProductHunt.” There’s no better way to put it. Created and maintained by the ProductHunt team, this platform is here to open the tool- stacks of people. Do you want to know which CRM is used by Producthunt founder, want to know why people don’t like a specific product? How are they using the to-do apps? What books about productivity are the best? Do you want to know other people’s stack? 
  Founders that are building something new must visit this platform to see the “ugly truth” of how people are using the most popular products. If you check out the Airtable page, you can see the variety of opinions and use cases. What a place to collect information about your users’ habits?
  Here are just a few ways to use Yourstack:
Do competitor research to see how their customers are using them;
Do market research to find all the possible products that are being used in your industry;  
Register your product and stack it;
Add pro tips to educate how your product can be used.

This community is yet another one where you can find support. This time it’s for full-time independent makers. Here you can register your product and build it in public. This is a place to display your tasks, your progress and lows. Here are the most proactive people who are genuinely helping with feedback and support. Something is fascinating about building your product in front of 500+ founders, and it’s a truly transformative experience to attempt something like this.
