WEEK 12: DOC SITES

With feedback from my critical friend Fern, she suggested that I add a section of the top doc sites in the north island - just incase people need inspiration for places nearest to them because I couldnt photograph them all.

With over 1541 sites across Aotearoa and 680 of those DOC sites in the North Island alone, I decided to filter tracks that were 1-4 hours long, and 'easiest to easy' level on the DOC website, making them accessible and achievable for most fitness levels.

My list is here! I couldn't narrow it down to 12 - I grew attached to all the photos of them haha so I thought the more the merrier!

the thing that you should do if you want to Experience Nature in the same general vicinity as yosemite but not, like, actually have to interact with tourists beyond what's necessary for california is Sonora. it's this town on 108, which is the road that goes up past the Yosemite turnoff if you're driving east from the Bay Area/Escalon/Tracy and eventually will get you clear to Reno. it's not particuarly large, but the Sonora Inn and attached Rodeway Inn are both pretty nice. it's very central to things in the area as well- you can get to Colombia State Park, Mercer Caverns, and a few different lakes within 30-40 minutes of driving. since it's more secluded, the drives are also beautiful, and traffic generally tends to not back up unless it's ski season.

The main thing in the area, aside from the aforementioned parks, is Pinecrest Lake and the Dodge Ridge Ski Resort. This is about 40 minutes from Sonora, taking 108 East. There's also a few small towns on the way that are fun to poke around in, plus there's a camping area on the lake and a chalet with little cabins that people can also stay in. Pinecrest Lake is an artificial lake which is filled in the summer and drained in the winter, and if you take the five-ish mile loop around it, you can walk on the dam and experience your own mortality. also, you can swim and boat on the lake, which is actually really fun.

the ski resort is mostly a winter attraction, but it seems to have opened some summer activities like mountain biking and disc golf as well under the new management. It's probably worth checking out.

I was gonna go to Yosemite in a couple months but I ended up writing about it for work and now I kinda. Kinda really don't want to. Like it's beautiful obviously but jfc it sounds like hell. Lodges cost hundreds of dollars a night and book up months in advance. Parking is not possible after 9am at the latest. The roads are grid-locked most of the day.

When I went to Zion it was busy enough to seriously disrupt my enjoyment and I still found parking the town outside and easily got on the park shuttle. I booked a permit for the most popular hike the night before. And I was still like "Yeah Zion is cool, but this weird little canyon I found off the map is just as cool and no one is there."

So I'm kinda like... why would I bother with Yosemite. I don't go to National Parks so I can feel like I went to Disneyland. I want to go experience a beautiful place. I think I would rather just go hang out in some random woods????

No better place to watch sky and sea.

very fine morning F57 ½° at 7 50 and went out at the pools – Robert + 5 at the new pool – then in the conery garden ad about till 9 when walked with A- and Little Mary as far as the turnpike on their way to the school – A- rather out of sorts at first to find I did not approve her letting Cookson go with Mrs. Heap to drink tea with some people at Halifax  got A- tolerably right again before leaving her how will all this end can I really get on forever with A-? I cannot yet believe it walked very slowly with A- and sauntered back and came in to breakfast at 10 ½ in ½ hour – then had Mrs. Cookson to bring in my gloves she had mended – told her I was sorry at the idea of her making acquaintances in H-x unnecessary – she behaved very well about it, and said she could explain it to Mrs. Heap and would excuse herself from drinking tea at H-x this evening – she would be glad of £5 – paid her £10 that is her years’ wages in full (£6 paid in a/c. some weeks ago) up to 7 My last = £16 per annum – had one of Mr. Mercers’ gauche men when I had to desire not to write on the wall with a nail while I was giving him orders – out again at 11 20 – and out till A- returned about (before) [?] then a little while with her – had Mr. Husband a little before 6 – paid him the last 17 weeks wages as clerk of the works £34 by check n°142 and paid him for letters and parcels £1.12.0 and for carriage of writing slates for A-‘s school from York 9/. – just saw him, asked him to walk in and sign the bills, and sent down the check and money by George – had Stephen Schofield this afternoon for a minute with bills for quarry iron work and iron work for grates etc = near £30 – told him to come over again on Saturday – out this afternoon with Mr. Gray and Robert 2 + at the new pool – and a little while with Samuel Booth and Jack Green pulling down the old wall against Empson (Allen car) and walling it in a line with the railing so that the whole length of wall up to his gate may be masked with stuff – at the hay barn and loitering in the wood a long while – expected Holt this afternoon – but he has not come – All Mawson’s hands (except 2 men taking soil off back Lodge road) busy spreading and cocking hay – all the masons at the hay barn this afternoon, 9 men including Booth himself, and 4 lads – wrote the last 12 lines till 6 ¼ - then till 7 inking over rough book of August 1834 – dinner at 7 5 to 8 ½ - Mr. Gray and I out till 10 ¼ (I had Joseph Mann at 8 ¼ for ¼ hour – ordered them to level for the gin – to see Holt tonight and tell him that he had not come today, I had determined to have the gin down) – Mr. G- and I at the hay-barn and round the meer – coffee at 10 ¼ to near 11 but stopt the clock ¼ hour so that came upstairs at 10 ¾ at which hour F55° - very fine day – Booth has forgot the hay-barn vents-holes to open just upon the floor – so asked Mr. Gray to order the 1st thing in the morning square headed loop-hole lights 6in. wide by 2ft. 6in. high – 1 light beginning 3ft. from the floor on each side of each of the 5 bays – calculating expense of Incline and steam engine = £2212 I may say the engine boiler pumps, rails and chain = £900 the Incline £1000 and the platform and buildings at least £300 – calculating all this and looking into old accounts till 11 55

WEEK FOUR: PROPER SHOOT

I went to the mercer bay loop walk for a second time in the same week and finally got my photos! I am really pleased with how they turned out and I think this is a fabulous starting point for me. I think it captures the spirit of the outdoors lifestyle I am trying to promote and I also think I can work on some things! I think that conducting my model/s to show a happier/more excited mood would be crucial for my next shoot steps. Even though the models serving face is usually my cup of tea, for a campaign like this I need some excitment!

I treated them with a warm tone, some are in black and white purely because I think these images suit this a lot more, there was too much going on by adding the warmer hue so having a simpler approach met everything in the middle.

This morning’s ride was 2 hours long and covered just over 40 kms (27 miles). It was sunny and 75, pretty much perfect bike riding weather. It’s Sunday, so there were more people out riding and more people crowding the parks than other times, but that was never a problem. The scenery was great, particularly if you like big lakes, urban skylines, fancy boats, and expensive neighborhoods.

My route picked up the Burke Gilman Trail near Gasworks and followed it past UW before turning across Montalke and heading east across the 520 floating bridge. On the Bellevue side, it was quiet roads through Medina, Bellevue itself, and Beaux Arts, before picking up the westbound I-90 trail across Mercer Island and Lake Washington. Then it was Lake Washington Boulevard north to the Arboretum, with a short detour through the Washington Park neighborhood.

The ride included plenty of small hills, but nothing big. The hardest climb was the steep ascent from the head of Meydenbauer Bay in Bellevue on SE 5th and 98th NE. The highest elevation was in my own neighborhood at the beginning and the end (most of my rides from home inevitably end with a 200’ climb). The Burke Gilman Trail and Lake Washington Boulevard are flat. And the floating bridges each provide perfectly straight two-mile time trial training segments, not that I’m training for anything).

Virtually the entire ride is on good paths, bike lanes, or on very low traffic residential streets. Lake Washington Boulevard doesn’t have dedicated bike lanes, but is still pretty bike friendly. This would be another great route for out-of-town visitors to check out, especially if you left time for cafe stops, parks, and the Arboretum. But on that note, I still don’t understand why there isn’t a big bike junction sign or map kiosk at the UW Triangle. Unless I’ve missed it, there’s not even a sign marking the junction between the Burke Gilman Trail and the Lake Washington Loop or the 520 Trail. I usually know where I’m going, but I think it would be nice to provide some hints to those that don’t!
