So, here I am. Sitting at my desk, armed with a laptop and a double shot of self-doubt. I want to conquer the digital marketing world, but there’s this nagging voice in my head: “You’re not an MBA. Who are you kidding?” Sound familiar? Great, then you’re in the right place. Let’s get one thing straight: MBAs are cool. But so are self-taught, scrappy, AI-savvy folks like us. Here’s the game…

no, because - famous person starts dating less famous person and is then gradually overshadowed is a trope. a trope often used to bring external conflict into stories. but jack and bitty are carefully constructed as the opposite of that, and I'm fucking feral over it.

we joke about how jack will eventually be bitty's trophy husband and be thrilled about it, but it definitely has a giant grain of truth in it. it's how they're characterized. bitty is an extrovert; jack is an introvert. bitty reached out and built himself an online audience to deal with his trauma; jack shut himself out and started avoiding the public to deal with his.

bitty finds comfort in being able to talk to others and (as seen in spotlight on eric bittle) considers being a public figure a sort of healing experience: coming out and being a public person (in every manner of speaking, not just sexuality wise) and putting himself in the limelight is such an important part of his journey because he sees it as a way of helping others who were in his situation.

jack grew up in the spotlight as the only son of two prominent figures. he grew up as a child with anxiety with the media's eyes on him as he was compared to his father. he grew up as an overweight teen featuring in trashy gossip columns as he was compared to his mother. he got into rehab in part because of this attention and it only attracted more attention to him. a lot of jack's anxiety stems from the notion of people looking at him and thinking about him and talking about him and judging him, and it's unfortunate because jack's dream is to play hockey, and that comes with even more attention.

but that's the thing: jack and bitty's story is (once again) a demonstration of two people making each other's lives better.

jack's fame thrusts bitty into the spotlight post-cup, and it's a giant push forward in helping him reach a bigger audience and thus grow his independent fame. bitty's growing fame slowly overshadows jack, to the point where ngozi says they'll one day be Eric Bittle and his Athlete Husband. and that means jack gets to play hockey, and win cups, and achieve fame in his own field, but the media's attention slides off him to his husband, and the fans on the street gradually approach bitty more than him, and jack is free to have his success with less of the personal scrutiny.

it's not that jack becomes less important than bitty. it's that bitty gets to stand in front of the direct sun and flourish as a result, while jack gets to stand in the shade bitty creates and flourish as a result. it's symbiosis. it's beautiful.

I just saw the non-concrete concept for like Zod not being a General but instead a cult leader in your continuity and it sounds genuinely intriguing tbh. Like that's a good way of showcasing that, yes Krypton is a utopia that has made it far, but their ideals aren't a monolith among each other.

thank you! I'm glad you think so! I know a lot of people's mindset nowadays for Krypton is "it's more interesting if it's a flawed planet like ours" and I just thoroughly disagree! There's plenty of ways to make a utopian planet interesting and flawed (which it always was, hence its explosion) without making it a carbon copy of Earth's problems.

Superman is inherently sci fi! Speculative fiction! I think part of my frustration with the majority white audience and creatives of Superman is that they want to chisel away the parts of him they find less relatable (immigrant, diaspora) and make him something that reflects themselves more (white colonizer guilt, white savior). I'm always fascinated when I research indigenous cultures, because they had entirely different frameworks for community, spiritualism, gender, before being threatened by colonialism.

I need people to imagine what reclaiming utopia in the face of Earth's problems means, that's why Superman's the Man of Tomorrow. He came from something better-and that better place can house terrible people like Zod.

So I was thinking about Selena's Wish in Downfall to spread the blueprint of the Factorum Malleus, and how out of all four aeormatons we've met, only Devexian actually remembers Aeor and the Calamity. And for a second, I had the fun idea that Devexian is walking around, ignoring that he has the blueprints for a god killing weapon downloaded into his brain (he's far too interested in reviving and perpetuating his people, ain't got time for god killing). That all the revived aeormatons have this knowledge slumbering in them, ready to be awakened if they can regain those ancient memories.

So I had to fact-check myself, because I wanted to know if I was on the right track and:

Selena is going to be rent asunder. (Selena) "Everyone, everyone, everyone." Every wizard of flesh and blood within Aeor is seeded by her Wish with the knowledge of how to create the Factorum Malleus. With her Wish does she say, "Run. Save this knowledge." The knowledge of the weapon touches every corner of this city.

Every wizard of flesh and blood.

What an interesting distinction of this Wish.

By that wording, you could reboot every aeormaton, even ones that are wizards, and they wouldn't know.

Selena excluded aeormatons from her Wish. The woman who created SILAHA, who was so proud of that creation. Only to have her pride practically stolen by the Arch Heart. Did she exclude aeormatons from her Wish because of SILAHA? Was it because of an engrained belief in mortal (mage) superiority over aeormatons as assembled beings? At least limiting the wish to wizards makes sense in that it is very canon that Aeor is a mageocracy and thus is built on the belief of the superior wizard/arcanist. Plus how wizardry is probably necessary to building a Factorum Malleus.

And there's such irony that only the aeormatons have been revived, have in a sense survived, after the destruction of Aeor. Yes, there's people in the time bubbles within the ruins, but nobody knows how to get them out, much less get them out safely.

It's just... wild that she went to all that effort, not only ensuring the destruction of the entire city, but also abjectly failing to get that knowledge out because of how she limited the Wish.

okay . i finished the shield and i NEED to talk about Vic’s dynamic with Shane bc it is sooo goddamn compelling like.?????

he fluctuates most frequently btwn treating Shane like a literal child and like his Partner™️ .

but Shane is also directly paralleled to the sex workers Vic connects with. Connie more overtly, but his mistreatment/manipulation/abuse of Farrah, as well as his disgust with her, is strikingly similar to the way he punishes Shane (and some of the most prolonged punishment Shane is made to endure - when Vic is angry about Shane’s new relationship with Mara - happens around the same exact time that Farrah is introduced)..

Farrah’s first appearance - Claudette calls Shane a liar for the car trouble deception and says that she should “fit right in” on Vic’s team after Vic calls Farrah a liar…..

Shane goes undercover as a sex worker three episodes after this ffs!!!! (is Shane Vic’s bottom bitch??? is that the implication here?? he was partnered with Vic before the formation of the strike team and it’s made clear that he’s Vic’s “number one boy”)

another very interesting parallel is the one with Vic & Cassidy (mind you, i was saying this to myself for the entirety of the season.. before Vic even made the connection out loud😭)…

Shane is compared to Matthew by Vic all the way back in s1

but as the show nears its end and Cassidy’s disillusionment with Vic grows, there’s a lot more to unpack there.

initially she idealizes her father, puts him on a pedestal, says his job is “cool”, and prides herself on being similar to him (sound familiar? lol). but in s6 & s7, she’s so angry with Vic & his failure to truly prioritize & protect them that she tries to report on him to Billings. she shirks the responsibilities Vic forces upon her. she runs away, skips school, gets suspended. she’s constantly angry and indignant and reckless (also incredibly familiar).

you’ll “fix” them??? Vic…. wtf is your problem 💀

at the same time this relationship btwn father and eldest daughter is deteriorating, Shane is so pissed with Vic that he tells the Armenians about the money train robbery. he fills an entire notebook with mutually assured destruction blackmail. he throws Vic’s forced retirement in his face. he straight up tries to off him after Vic & Ronnie’s failed attempt to off him first (we don’t know if he would’ve been able to go through with it, but he sure as hell got a lot closer to killing Vic than he could in s4. in fact, he didn’t even consider it back then)..

and yet, they both are so clearly starved for attention from Vic. they’re absolutely livid and are sick of him, his bullshit, and his expectations, but eventually submit when Vic spares a moment to tell them exactly what he knows they need to hear from him. until they both reach their own respective breaking points.

ill have to save everything i want to say about Ronnie, his jealousy & indignation, and his perception of vic/shane/the both of them for another post but man . this show is a lot. lmao

Correct me if i'm wrong, but I thought I remembered seeing a screenshot of Wyll's stats in the epilogue (Blade of Avernus ending) where it said he was a level 22 ranger? Regardless of the logistics of going past level 20 in a DnD setting, but if that's true - if Wyll could go from having NO levels in Ranger to becoming a level 22 one in the 6 months between the end of the game and the epilogue, there is nothing to say that Tav/the PC couldn't similarly level up in that time (provided they are also adventuring about and grinding XP).

Which means if they're a spellcaster, they almost certainly have access to level 9 spells. And if they're the correct spellcasting class, they could have access to spells such as True Polymorph, True Resurrection, and Wish. All three of which could offer solutions to both Karlach's engine and an illithid!Tav.

EDIT: found out it was a mod that raises the level cap! but the point still stands!!! if you can get to level 12 in the few weeks that the game takes place over, getting to level 17 (the min level you need to start casting 9th level spells) in the span of 6 months while fighting your way through Avernus isn't that far-fetched a leap to make!
