I haven't thought about homestuck in years but I began to reread it recently, and I remembered highly enjoying your analysis so I came to revisit, and I'm rather surprised by the turn it's taken. Genuine question to satisfy my own curiosity, how come your analysis shifted so heavily from possible trauma and teenage issues to homophobia, transgender readings of so many characters, and the grotesque?
First up, I'm moved that you thought of my blog when you revisited the story! Thank you for stopping by.
I think I would sum up the change as... various factors compelled me to reframe the way I approached paranoia in the comic? Like you said, I used to be all about character's individual psychologies: John with the fear of being judged, Jade with the latent hostility toward Grandpa, etc. But sometimes the fears were bigger than individuals. Homestuck cracked its first Obama joke in reference to Deep Impact, a movie about people for whom a black presidency is an event comparable to cataclysmic flooding. The poorly received Skainet Systems lore made a sly reference to racist birther conspiracies, asserting that Obama was born in another timeline instead of another country. Dirk lays out a story (which he outright states was gathered from conspiracy theorists) where a tyrant, who speaks a distinctly Black flavor of English, eventually floods the earth. Between instances like these, I eventually inferred that Homestuck itself takes place within a conspiracy theory -- and a self-consciously racist one at that -- which raised more specific questions about unreliable narration than Homestuck was already encouraging with its meta motifs.
At various points, characters make revealing Freudian slips -- Karkat summoned an image of Jade "making out with herself" when he was trying to critique what she was "making herself out to be", for instance. The pun revealed an embarrassing, private fixation. When I was still focused on character psychology, I had some luck finding Freudian slips that weren't openly teased, which provided further insight into the characters' psyches. After shifting into the conspiratorial mode, I eventually applied a similar idea to the story at large: if certain word choices in the narrative are designed to reflect proximity to certain societal hatreds, then finding them allows us to piece together the paranoid conspiracies about the hated groups in question, which structure the narrative. I whimsically dubbed this activity "Slurquest". The allusions to homophobia and transphobia found via this approach made it easier to spot the same motifs in individuals.
The recent turn towards "the grotesque" (by which I assume you mean porn jokes) basically amounts to me catching a fairly simple joke: why does Problem Sleuth combine a film projector with a contracting waste disposal pipe? Why are allusions to sun-blindness accompanied by torn up toilets? The answer is gay pornography, within its utility for shock: the old internet practice of linking people images of huge distended assholes, to their displeasure, for laughs. Terezi's sun-blindness is on some level a repetition of Hussie's old gag "the elf saw a picture of a penis and started to cry", with the red sun acting as an abstracted goatse -- this is why Dave, whose apartment is haunted by the Red Sun, is likewise haunted by Bro's gay pornography. This ongoing sun/ass symbolism makes it funnier when Dave uses the phrase "privy to what I flame broil below" to describe Terezi smelling his ass.
That's the short of it, at least

Power Instinct Songs Ranked by Me (Part 7 of 8)
youtube
20. Ai ni Ikiru (Power Instinct)
Like Metameta, this song has grown on me a lot. Annie's best theme by far.
youtube
19. Fly Away (Groove on Fight)
Perfect music for when you're fighting two old ladies and a Sean Connery look-alike on top of a flying airplane. Not much else to say, but I do really like this track.
youtube
18. Give Me Money (Power Instinct 2)
The first song from Power Instinct 2 that I listened to, so it holds a special place in my heart. I've mentioned in an earlier post about the song Mottainai, which was originally Angela's unused theme from the PS1 port, and how it's better than Mottanai Death (which was a death metal remix that did get used in Senzo Kuyou). My opinion still stands, because Mottainai is just Give Me Money, but with different lyrics and singers. It probably should have had it's own ranking, but I was too lazy, I guess. Let's just say it's tied with Give Me Money.
youtube
17. Otoko no Karatemichi (Power Instinct)
So iconic, it's been in (almost) every Power Instinct game. But perfection can be improved upon, since the original didn't have much singing. It did have lyrics back then, but only in karaoke mode from one or both of the console ports of the first game (Japan only), I forget which.
youtube
16. Eiyuu ni Naritai (Heavy Version) (Power Instinct 2)
Plays during Round 2 of Keith's stage, and this is where it's starting to sound more like Eiyuu ni Naritai. Just, y'know, heavier than normal. Quite the banger.
youtube
15. ZIZIZI (Power Instinct 2)
Another song to dance to in my head. Wins out over Senzo Kuyou's remix because I like the 90s VGM aural aesthetic better.
14. Otoko no Karatemichi -Yakyuu Ouenfuu- (Gogetsuji Legends)
Yakyuu Ouenfuu translates to "Baseball Cheering Style", and it really does sound like baseball music. I can totally picture this song playing if Reiji was playing baseball instead of competing in a fighting tournament.
youtube
13. Joy!/Delight! (Matrimelee)
My favorite of the four songs that play when you fight against one of the guest fighters from Rage of the Dragons. Doesn't play much in the original Japanese version, since you don't get to fight Mr. Jones in one player mode, but I bet got more playtime in the overseas version. I don't know, I've never played Matrimelee. But this song is a bop.
youtube
12. World Step (Groove on Fight)
Definitely part of my top 3 Groove on Fight stage themes (and my top 5 GoF tracks in general).
youtube
11. Namida no... (Power Instinct 2)
A sad, pretty song. Power Instinct 2 and Gogetsuji Legends have the best soundtracks IMO, but I've probably made that clear many times by now.
One more left!

Been reading all of your psychosexual analysis of homestuck + it's characters and god this stuff is fascinating. It can be real hard to find any writing on sexuality, kinks and fetishes in fandoms but it seems that hs is almost like a gold mine when it comes to this topic thanks to the coming-of-age theme. The murder = sex post hasn't left my head since I read it and now when I see any scene mention / involve either of the two I can't help but think about how the other could be relevant. Never thought suicidal ideation could be so masturbatory before this.
Glad to say your posts have helped me get a slightly better understanding of anything I read. I'd never really thought much about things like positioning of characters in frames / panels, sequences of events and choice of words since I didn't really care for literary analysis before I got into homestuck. Sort of a 'came for the cool flashes, stayed for the writing' type situation, which is a pipeline that makes me thankful for the animations Hussie made because I'd only ever inferred that the writing was bad from conversations I'd seen people having about hs.
Anyway, you talked about how Rose's fear of drowning (loss of control) correlates to her non-con kink and now I'm wondering what you think the other characters fears suggest about their sexual interests? I'd assume John's fear of heights has something to do with the fall, and from there some sort of corruption kink / a fetish for anything generally 'sinful'; which would explain his interest in 'bad' girls like Vriska (and the way he eagerly adopts her mannerisms).
The planets tend to include each kid's fears / insecurities so it's not exactly hard to figure those out, but I'm not sure whether I'm making the "right" connections, since I'm just making the best with what I have (bare minimum literary knowledge) and homestuck makes a lot of references to outside works.
Extra request: if you've got any good books / posts / articles / whatevers on psychosexuality or such please tell me. I'm curious and bored
I'm glad you're getting something out of the blog! Goofy fetish talk is kind of rare, but it is striking when you find it: I watched Good Luck Chuck at Karkat's recommendation and that turned out to be a central motif. Sex/death substitution is a bit more common... here's a write up on Pulp Fiction you might like. You might also like these posts by SMG on Prometheus, he is the one who introduced me to a lot of the storytelling strategies I discuss on this blog. More generally though, I recommend looking for articles about movies you like and adding "psychoanalysis" to the search -- if nothing else, it's an easy way to find people who take sexual symbolism seriously.
Evaluating your own accuracy is tricky, but I can only recommend that you regard your current model of the story as provisional. Even as you search for information that strengthens your current understanding of the story, you'll likely stumble upon another framework that works just as well or better. Keep an open mind, some things have multiple answers
Re: fear-becomes-fetish motifs, the last major piece I wrote in this vein was about Dave, I think? It's kind of outdated though. My focus on individual psychologies faltered as I reoriented myself towards like, similar fear>fetish material on a societal level. One example: people inclined to worry about being Replaced by other races are the impetus for miscegenation porn, which repurposes feelings of resentment and inferiority for titillation -- this gets channeled into the "black always mates white" narrative of doom in Sburb, Derse (black) launching "seeds" at Prospit (white)/Skaia, Caliborn sexualizing his predomination over Calliope, etc. You can see traces of this narrative show up in characters like Kanaya (who agrees with Eridan that race purity matters, only to be haunted by cuck jokes like Watching Oblong Meat Products Tumble Into Places They Dont Belong) but its not like she even knows what black people are -- she's an alien. So when she tearfully agrees that Dirk can take better care of her wife than she ever could, it only /refers/ to the miscegenation porn structure, casting Kanaya as the impotent observer suffering yet another Lalondian "black out". There's a degree of abstraction at play that makes it difficult to say Kanaya "has" the kink being discussed through her, at least not in its entirety.
All of which is to say that while the kink angle is occasionally useful, it's not my current approach. Like you technically can link Jade's fear of lightning to her being a furry, but despite John explicitly referring to furry as a kink thing (and Jade having a daughter named Yiffy), the earliest reference to furry stuff is better parsed in terms of misogyny and transphobia, imo. You might be able to find more stuff indicating that Egbert secretly enjoys the Fall of Man (like her professed love of apocalypse movies, or the cheeky Save Rose From Corruption roleplay), but also the entry item could indicate a fixation on the Adam's Apple in the throat, as an early hint of June motifs. Or maybe I've just been away from this methodology for too long, and Egbert's traumatic fall from the slimer pogo indicates that the fear of heights should be linked to manbro bukkake theatre??? Idk, but again, that's not really my element anymore

And this is such a shame because it then takes the desire out of analyzing it form another perspective and giving other characters. In this case, why is Neville so affected by it when the other kids aren’t? They’re yelling back, they’re playing pranks/distractions in the classroom with only the fear of detentions?
This robs the fandom as a whole and it’s such a shame.
I must say - I've always been disturbed by the whole 'Snape and Trevor scene' discourse from both the Snaters' and Snapedom's POV. Snaters use this scene as a proof of Snape torturing and abusing students (on a daily basis, often). I often see readings of this scene by the Snapedom that are very clever and rational - no, this is not torture. No, he would not have killed him.
But yes, it is abuse. The thing is, from Snape's POV, sure: he had reasons to do that, it was not done out of cruelty, it was an almost desperate attempt - perhaps even a clumsy one - to have Neville face the dangerous consequences of his carelessness and inattentive behaviour.
However, saying that Snape threatened to poison Trevor is a perfectly valid affirmation, because this is the exact message he sends to Neville. The important factor here, not often taken into account, is rationality - it often seems to me like the Snapedom explains and minimises the impact this had, or could have had on Neville by demonstrating there was rationally nothing to be afraid of - which is the case - so we should not make it 'such a big deal.' It is important to remember, however valid your explanation of this scene is, that it does not take into account Neville's feelings and knowledge - more precisely, lack of insight and knowledge - of Snape's intentions and capacities. What Snape instills in Neville in this very moment is pure fear. Yes, to Neville, Trevor's life is in danger, and, if you follow Snape's logic - in what he wants Neville to feel - it is Neville's own fault.
Snape threatens, that is the word, his pet, friend, family member, every day companion. You see why I am particularly sensitive to this subject. It does not matter what things look like from our point of view.
So yes, we have to acknowledge Snape did not torture his students, and was not nearly as bad with them as he is depicted by Snaters. That the word torture and bullying should, in his instance, not be used, or, for bullying, used cautiously, is right. But do not minimise this behaviour. This was abuse - animal abuse of course, but in the real world just like in the magical world, it does not matter - this was emotional abuse toward Neville. Text analysis is important, but perspectives and consideration of reasonless (for all sort of causes), non rational feelings is too. Snape did not intend to kill Trevor - valid affirmation. Snape made it look like he would - valid affirmation. No matter what Snape really meant to do, what he did was abuse - valid affirmation.
Overall I sometimes feel the same when I see explanations offered to Snaters about Neville's Boggart. What is relevant is to put Snape's actions into perspective, correct fanon ideas of him being a bully and crual teacher - but Neville's case is peculiar and he clearly was abusive toward him. Is it relevant to explain why JK Rowling chose to make Snape his boggart? Sure. To explain why a boggart is not the personification of your actual deepest darkest fear? Of course. Is it right to use this as a way to minimise Snape's impact on Neville's mental health? Textual analysis does not change his feelings. He was not traumatised, that is a fact. But his fear of Snape, and Snape's behaviour, are concerning. I feel sometimes, just sometimes, we almost fall into a... nihilistic, if I may put it like this, vision of things.
Snape's behaviour toward Neville and Trevor was cruel, terrifying to a child, and could have been traumatising, no matter what the intent was. I just felt like this needed to be reminded. What Snaters try to do with this fact, however, when they do get a fact right - which is to paint a simple, uninformed, black and white portait of his character based on fanon or a single behaviour, is wrong. But what Snape did was terribly, terribly wrong as well, abusive and brutal, and it's right to acknowledge it, no matter if it was a mild inconvenience up to Hogwarts' standards. Text analysis does not erase the momentary or long term consequences of an action within the work of fiction.
Diminishing the emotional impact of an action using text analysis is mixing two separate and mutually exclusive perspectives.

crossing the streams (in my mind) is bad
There's a very good and specific reason why I refuse to learn anything much about the historical Stede Bonnet and Edward Teach (or Israel Hands) - I prefer to keep my knowledge of them purely as a creation of David Jenkins, Dan Halsted, and the writers, cast, and company of the TV show Our Flag Means Death - because why in the WORLD would I ever want to compromise this beautiful intoxication with FACTS?
