So in trying to come up with other things to write about here, I decided that since I’m such a sports fan and enjoy going to various venues to see events, that it should only be fitting to share my experiences at those venues I’ve been to. So to start things off, I’ll open this series with one the came up in my Facebook memories today from 10 years ago… Fenway Park I know, I know…I’m a Yankees…

Michael Vibourne Bancroft (with updated ref sheets n info)

Michael is the bodyguard/butler/substitute bartender for the Audhild family, (The Audhild family hunts inhuman beings and supernatural, and gain their funds through the Audhild Family Casino named Bar Bahamut, i never said the Audhilds were creative)

It can falter when given direct order from his master, when his master djes, when he feels extreme anger, when hes very injured, and when hes overly excited. Michaels restraints prevent him from going beserk/primal, or having thinhs simmilar to sensory overload fom the busy workplace and hia usual hightened senses.

back carvings: In Michaels back is carved: 'Praise, Worship, Serve, God is my salvation'. These markings eere given to him at St. Jacobs Catholix Orphanage by Father Evans and Father Smith. They were done with a regular hunting knife at the age of 13.

leg scars: He has lomg scars across his right thigh from his own claws in a fit while deep in the fost after driven by the village. He has again, huntung scars along his legs. He also has deep claw marks on his left calf after being dragged into the water by a monster in 1976.

arm scars: He has a small bullet scar on his left bicep from a monster hunter, he has some self inflicted scars, as well as some bite markd and clae marks from his many years hunting.

face scars: He has two scars on his face. He has a large deep scar across his cheek horizontally and a smaller shallower one coming up from his jaw vertically. The vertical scar was aquired in a bar fight when he was 18. The large cheek one was given at the age of 21. He had been running from the werebat, and upon not seeing it anymore, he stopped. When he turned, his face was slashed open by its claws.

torso scars: He has a large slash across his gut. The same werebat instance, as he scrambked away, it pounced, slicing his abdomen ooen and feasting from hin. The smaller scars across his sides and chest are simple hunting scars

hand scars: the three upon his right hand were inflicted in the orphanage after Michael got into a fight

,Fpr threeish years of his life he kives with his ill mother, till she passed and he went to St. Jacobs Orphanage.He was there up until the age pf 13, to which i ts burned down. From 13-18(or 19) he was hunting smalll animals for money and placing bar bets. At 19-20ish he moved tp London, where he began working at 'The Kings Head', a small english pub. He worked there until he was 21 to which at 21 he was brutalized by a werebat after his shift. For many years he terrprized and feasted off that village, till he wss driven out. After many many yearsn he found a casino, to which hed loiter outside and wait for pray. He was found by Dante Audhild and firced to work for him. He was rehabilitated by Elizabeta and has been workin for the Audhild family ever since.

Inside Llewyn Davis is a 2013 film directed and written by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake and John Goodman.

The film is inspired by the life of folk singer Dave Van Ronk, active in New York in the sixties.

It participated in competition at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Grand Prix.

New York, February 1961: Llewyn Davis is a struggling young folk singer whose recent solo album, Inside Llewyn Davis, was a flop; being without money and nowhere to go, he sleeps on the sofas of friends and acquaintances. One evening, after playing at the Gaslight Café in Greenwich Village, he is beaten at the back of the venue by a mysterious and rude individual for reasons not immediately specified.

He subsequently accepts Jim's proposal to record a new song, agreeing to be paid immediately 200 dollars in exchange for the transfer of the copyright, in order to have the money for the abortion.

The young man accepts a ride to Chicago in the company of the laconic poet Johnny Five and the grumpy heroin-addicted jazz musician Roland Turner; during the trip he reveals that his musical partner, Mike Timlin, committed suicide by jumping off a bridge.

In an expanded version of the film's opening scene, Davis performs at the Gaslight and Pappi reports to him that a "friend" is waiting for him in the back; Davis then watches a young Bob Dylan perform on stage.

The film starts from the Coen's reflection on the rebirth of interest in folk music in the sixties, and in particular that despite the genre's exquisitely rural identity, in that period it was followed above all in a metropolis like New York, and that so all its major performers were natives, like Brooklyn's Dave Van Ronk and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.

When writing the screenplay, the pair of directors drew mainly from Van Ronk's autobiography, published posthumously in 2005, The Mayor of MacDougal Street but, even before starting to write it, the Coens had started from a single idea: imagine Van Ronk getting beaten up outside Gerde's Folk City in the Village.

Producer Scott Rudin, who had previously worked with the Coens on True Grit and No Country for Old Men, collaborated on the project. StudioCanal helped the production financially in the absence of a US financier/distributor.

On May 9, 2013, shortly before the presentation of the film at the Cannes Film Festival, the red band trailer and a new poster were also released.

The soundtrack was curated by T Bone Burnett, songwriter, producer and Oscar winner for the song The Weary Kind, and by Marcus Mumford.

Mike might’ve been a late addition to that particular group, but she loves him just as fiercely as she does all the others, and she’s glad someone is here tonight.

“Let’s run away.” Exhaled with a sigh of a laugh and a whisper of smoke, her previously melancholy expression finally takes on a more humorous edge. The quip isn’t one of her best, but at least it’s something.

Thoughts : Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

Yesterday, in my continuing efforts to provide various types of content for this blog, I undertook ranking the films of the Coen Brothers.  Usually, when I rank directors, I have the issue of having to list multiple films I have not seen so that they will not be factored into the rankings, but in this case, there was only one film : Inside Llewyn Davis.  The film was already on my list of stuff to watch, as I am a devout and dedicated fan of the Coens, but in the history of unseen films that did not factor into my rankings, no fanbase was as vocal about me seeing the film immediately as this one.  With that bit of ‘friendly suggestion’ in mind, I decided it was time to watch Inside Llewyn Davis. 

Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is a young seaman with dreams of finding success at a folk singer in 1960s Greenwich Village, New York City.  His previous musical group, Timlin & Davis, found brief success before tragedy visited Mike Timlin (Marcus Mumford in a voice only role), and his current solo release, Inside Llewyn Davis, is not selling.  Llewyn spends his days and nights living off of those he can, looking for any and every opportunity to make money, and making sure that all of his peers know exactly how he feels about their creative abilities.  Jean Berkey (Carey Mulligan), of the many people that Llewyn uses, lets Llewyn know that she is pregnant, though she is unsure if the father is Llewyn or her husband Jim Berkey (Justin Timberlake).  In an effort to make some sort of money to ‘take care’ of Jean and set himself up for a better life, Llewyn chases a series of opportunities, all of which lead him squarely to the realization of exactly how everyone in his life feels about him.

Llewyn Davis is as talented as he is selfish, and the way that he uses others and is driven by the bottom dollar perfectly sets up his oblivious (or possibly uncaring) nature to the wake of destruction connected to his actions.  The pride in his talent lifts his up to a place of entitlement, which manifests in an inability to regulate his opinions about others... sometimes his hurtful opinions are indirect, but usually, they are targeted and hurtful criticisms doled out to strangers and loved ones in equal measure.  It is often unclear (purposefully, I would surmise) if Llewyn’s harsh actions are driven by a sense of jealousy or a sense of spite driven by sociopathic tendencies, but regardless, either read would support the fear of responsibility that clearly sits heavily with Llewyn.  The long and short of it is, Inside Llewyn Davis is a ballad of an antagonist placed in the protagonist position who is continuously feeling forces that are trying to remove him from his comfort zone.

As a narrative, the setup of reflections on an edgy, tortured soul surrounded by the content, the complacent and the commonplace works as a solid foundation.  Llewyn’s presence as an antagonistic protagonist reads as him constantly trying to rock any and every harmonious boat he can find, be it for personal entertainment or as an attempt to drag others down to his realms of pain.  With all of this hurt and resentment fueling Llewyn, the symbolism of the cat as forced responsibility (and the very real unconditional love it needs) plays beautifully, especially as the actual cat switches while remaining familiar.  The tolerance shown to Llewyn by those in his life force the audience to consider the leeway given to the talented, and how many are willing to do things detrimental to themselves in hopes of raising the talented up.  Ironically, all of this is ultimately for naught because, as mentioned previously, Llewyn has a concrete dedication to taking any direction other than the path of least resistance, almost as if he owes a penance of pain.

The Coen Brothers have always been adept at comedy of all varieties, but outside of A Serious Man, it’s hard to think of another one of their comedies wrapped up in so many layers of tragedy.  This is enhanced by the smoky, lived-in, desaturated look that the film employs.  As a period piece, the Coens wonderfully capture a lost, gritty era of New York, and by comparison, the open expansion of the Midwest that Llewyn travels through are a memory of the pre-capitalism boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s.  The ensemble cast is relatively large but extremely well managed, and is chock full of kinetic and dynamic energy that can be found in every combination of interaction presented on the screen.  While the film is extremely musical, it is done so in a very sincere way, to the point where the story is driven by the acting more so than the novelty of having actors who can also sing.

The way that Oscar Isaac makes the most hateful characteristics of Llewyn so lighthearted and entertaining is a testament to his ability to connect on more than a surface level with both other actors and the audience.  By comparison, John Goodman comes in like a freight traing, throwing an amplified version of Llewyn’s worst aspects right back at him.  Carey Mulligan’s pain and frustration permeate off of the screen, settling in a place where they have a true impact with the viewer.  Justin Timberlake brings a sense of optimism and accessible talent that offsets Llewyn’s sense of detachment.  Adam Driver is a naïve light in a jaded darkness, while Garrett Hedlund’s brooding presence brings a quiet, sinister element to the film, like a harbinger of danger.  F. Murray Abraham, Stark Sands, Jerry Grayson, Jeanine Serralles and Alex Kaprovsky make memorable appearances, while support is provided by Ethan Phillips, Robin Bartlett, Max Casella, Ben Pike and more.

I knew going into the film Inside Llewyn Davis that the team of the Coen Brothers and Oscar Isaac was a “can’t miss” connection, and the film proved this theory to be correct.  While being quite the entertaining and thought-provoking work, it’s funny to think a movie considered to be a "strong Coen Brothers presentation" would be a career altering classic if presented by most any other director.
