Sondheim Show Nr. 1: The Frogs.

Further cast joining Kevin McHale in Sondheim’s The Frogs revival confirmed Further company members have been confirmed for the London revival of The Frogs, led by Kevin McHale.
The musical comedy has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Burt Shevelove and Nathan Lane. Directed by Georgie Rankcom, the production reimagines Aristophanes’ ancient Greek satire, which was originally written in 405 BCE. The story follows Dionysos, the god of theatre, and his servant Xanthias on a journey to the underworld in search of a solution to societal strife. Along the way, they encounter frogs who resist change and challenge their mission to save civilisation.
Kevin McHale will make his UK stage debut as Xanthias, while joining him will be Dan Buckley as Dionysos, Joaquin Pedro Valdes as Herakles, Carl Patrick as Charon, Bart Lambert as Shakespeare and cover Xanthias, Martha Pothen as Shaw and cover Dionysos, Alison Driver as Ariadne and swing, Evonnee Bentley-Holder as ensemble and cover Shaw and Charon, and Milo McCarthy as ensemble/dance captain and cover Shakespeare and Herakles. Further casting for the role of Pluto will be announced shortly.
The show will play at Southwark Playhouse Borough from 23 May to 28 June 2025. It is presented by the Grey Area, (following their WhatsOnStage Award-nominated 2022 staging of Anyone Can Whistle at Southwark Playhouse) alongside Samsational Entertainment, Benson Drive Productions, Melissa and Bradford Coolidge, Thomas Hopkins Productions, Nelson and Tao and Eric Kuhn for Folk Productions.
Making up the creative team are Ben McQuigg as musical supervisor, Yshani Perinpanayagam as musical director, Matt Nicholson as choreographer, Libby Todd as set and costume designer, Samuel Biondolillo as lighting designer, Joshua Robins as sound designer, Tim Sutton as orchestrator, Peter Noden as casting director, Elliot Aitken as assistant director, Fletcher Dobinson as associate choreographer, Adam Smith as production manager, Waverley Moran as stage manager and Evie Graham-Brown as assistant stage manager. Rebecca Pitt has made the show artwork, Sam Barnes is sound number one and Luke Pisano is wardrobe supervisor.
Tickets are on sale via the venue website.

Oi Frater!
My Life With the Spirits. De canal do Youtube, não sei se você já viu, porque eu recomendo sempre, mas tem o De Monge a Mago, do Wellington, que é 90% causos e eu pessoalmente gosto muito.

CNN— ‘Good Night, and Good Luck’ 6pm
George Clooney, as Edward R. Murrow, acts in the stage production of “Good Night, and Good Luck,” at Winter Garden Theatre in New York on March 11. Sara Krulwich/The New York Times
Twenty years after his successful film “Good Night, and Good Luck,: George Clooney has revived his drama of celebrated journalist Edward R. Murrow’s battle against Joseph McCarthy-era political injustices.
The staged version, which also takes its name from Murrow’s signature ending to broadcasts, is the first play to bring in over $4 million in a single week.
On Saturday, Clooney’s final performance on Broadway will be broadcast on CNN, reminding much larger audiences of how hard — and how necessary — it is to push back against false accusations and the chilling anxiety they create.
Sadly, the reckless political extremism of mid-20th century America is also having a revival.
Scientists, government workers, librarians, court officials, athletes, legal immigrants and many other ordinary people doing their jobs and going about their lives have suddenly been told they are part of a sewer, a deep state, a criminal population, or simply so inessential that their life’s work should be abandoned, right now.
Two of the least powerful groups threatened by the current climate of repression are public school teachers and their students, children who may never even realize what they have been kept from learning.
Their plight lacks the drama of deportations or the sudden shuttering of lifesaving, world-preserving scientific programs, but the damage is as great.
For several years, I have researched the almost-forgotten teacher purges of the 1950s, with particular attention to New York City, the largest school system in the United States, where a special office was devoted to investigating teachers for allegedly subversive actions — which could include watching a parade, signing a petition, or simply reading the wrong newspaper, as well as belonging to unions or other professional organizations that had other members who were under suspicion.
Long after everyone who could tell me about it was dead, I discovered that one of those blacklisted public-school teachers was my own father.
Forced out of his job the same year as Milo Radulovich, the Air Force Reserve officer whose firing inspired Murrow’s crusade and Clooney’s play, my father was not around to see either the film or the stage versions of “Good Night, and Good Luck”.
Instead, he lived out its story in real time.
Like thousands of other teachers, from kindergarten to college, he was called in by investigators on the flimsiest of evidence, in a hidden proceeding whose records are still shrouded in secrecy.
The only way he could keep his job was by naming other possible suspects, offering up fresh victims for the professional hunters of supposed communist sympathizers.
No proof was required — the simple act of betraying others was taken as confirmation of loyalty to the political system of the day.
Instead, my father resigned, joining a large company of blacklist victims whose stories are still very hard to uncover.
Radulovich, whose treatment inspired “Good Night, and Good Luck,“ was another ordinary person forced out of his job by shadowy claims of associating with communist sympathizers.
Powerless to fight the forces aligned against him, he had the good luck to find a champion, Murrow, who could expose the self-serving fabrications of his accusers.
Murrow, in turn, had the luck to persuade his network bosses that they should have the courage to air his story.
The teachers who were blacklisted in the 1950s were not so lucky.
They were left to fend for themselves, unable to do the work for which they had trained, largely forgotten by history.
Most survived, but all were scarred by the ordeal.
The school systems that worked so hard to impose conformity also suffered, and so did the students.
Today, teachers, librarians, scientists, judges and other ordinary people who work hard to make our nation a place of wisdom and justice are again attacked for chillingly nonsensical reasons.
They are threatened with violence, imprisonment, or simply barred from doing their jobs, creating a tragic loss of expertise.
Once again, government is trying to silence the journalists who report on government oppression, aggressively excluding reporters from courtrooms and government chambers, trying to control the record of what is happening.
As we watch “Good Night, and Good Luck,“ we should applaud the courageous journalists who helped bring down McCarthy and other tyrants of his era and give thanks for the people who continue to expose injustice today.
Let us also take time to remember all the unrecorded victims, past and present.
They will need all the good luck they can get. So will we all.
Jane S. Smith is the author of “A Blacklist Education: American History, A Family Mystery, and a Teacher Under Fire,” which will be published in July.
CELEBRITIES
Clooney play to air live on CNN, Max
George Clooney appears opening night of the play April 3 in New York.
From news services
When “Good Night, and Good Luck” arrived on Broadway this spring, it initially provoked a surprising amount of cynicism.
There were complaints that the adaptation by George Clooney and Grant Heslov was basically a reproduction of the 2005 film, which chronicled CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow’s heroic crusade against Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s communist witch hunts.
The sky-high cost of tickets was another source of criticism.
Was Broadway pricing itself beyond the reach of its core audience? Reports of “Good Night, and Good Luck” shattering box office records served to remind those who couldn’t afford a ticket that they were being left behind by a theater culture that was siding with the haves over the have-nots.
In a season that featured Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal in a rudderless “Othello” and Kieran Culkin in a “Glengarry Glen Ross” revival that might have been stronger without him, “Good Night, and Good Luck” was a convenient target for anti-Hollywood sentiment.
The broodingly elegant production, sharply directed by David Cromer and starring a quietly committed Clooney in the role of Murrow, was not only one of the most stirring offerings of the Broadway season but also one of the most necessary.
Now it is being made available to a larger audience as CNN will broadcast a live performance of “Good Night, and Good Luck” from the Winter Garden at 7 p.m. ET Saturday.
The play will also stream live on CNN’s online platforms and on Max.
It’s apparently the first time a Broadway play will be shown live on TV.
CNN will broadcast the penultimate performance on the eve of the Tony Awards.
The production is up for five Tonys, including Clooney in the lead performance by an actor in a play category.
But however the awards shake out, Clooney is already a winner.
Like Murrow, he reminds us that conscience can still be a defining feature of the American character.
Felton returning to ‘Harry Potter’ role: Tom Felton — the original Draco Malfoy from the “Harry Potter” movies — will slip into his old role on Broadway this winter in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.”
“Being a part of the ‘Harry Potter’ films has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Joining this production will be a full-circle moment for me, because when I begin performances in ‘Cursed Child’ this fall,
I’ll also be the exact age Draco is in the play,” Felton, 37, said. Felton will be making his Broadway debut in the role from Nov. 11 through March 22, 2026.
It will mark the first time a member of the “Harry Potter” film cast has joined the stage production.

MAMAN DE LA VIE [1][2][3]
Notes
Marcelin, Milo. "Mythologie vodou (Rite Arada), Volume II." Pétionville: Éditions Canapé Vert (1950). pp. 177-178
“Maman Brigitte, the Mother of the Gedes” is a Google Groups conversation on alt.religion.orisha, dated Jun 16, 2001 - Jun 19, 2001. In this conversation, which may have only involved white people, Caucasian Mambo Racine Sans Bout encourages the group to read an article titled "White Women in Vodou", claiming that “Maman Brigitte is a manifestation of the Celtic Goddess Brigid. During the formative period of Haitian Vodou, many Scottish people were deported from Scotland to the Antilles because of the Stuart wars, and those Scots were the most traditionalist, the least Christianized. They were the ones who brought Brigid to Haiti.” This was reproduced in her “Vodou Lessons”, where she claims that "Maman Brigitte, surprisingly enough for a Vodou lwa, is British in origin, descended from Brigid/St. Brigit, the Celtic "triple goddess" of poetry, smithcraft, and healing. She must have come to Haiti in the hearts of deported Scottish and Irish indentured servants." She seems to have had a central role in spreading this myth, although I am uncertain whether she personally invented it. In both of these writings, Racine claims to have heard a song that goes “Manman Brijit, li soti nan anglete”, which is supplied as proof of her assertions. However, she only produced a single verse without describing a song in its entirety. Foreigners are known to make mistakes when it comes to hearing, understanding, and reporting songs from Haitian Vodou. As I have been unable to verify the existence of this song, it is of dubious quality. What I have heard from a Haitian source is “Brigitte is not white” (“Brijit pa blanc”).
From Denise Alvarado’s Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook: “In Voodoo, Ma'man Brigit (Grann Brigitte, Manman, Manman Brigit, Manman Brijit) is the mother of cemeteries, the loa of money and death, and the wife of Baron Samedi. She may be related to the "triple" Celtic goddess of poetry, smithcraft, and healing, Brigid/St. Brigit, as her name is Irish in origin. She is usually depicted as a white woman.” Source: Alvarado, Denise. The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook. United States, CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, 2009; The narrative involving Irish indentured servants also appears in: Noonan, Kerry. Robert Tallant described how Saints were worshiped in Louisiana Voudou: “These merchants also sell pictures of saints. To certain Roman Catholic saints particular Voodoo power has been attributed: St. Michael is thought best able to aid in conquering enemies; St. Anthony de Padua is invoked for “luck”; St. Mary Magdalene is popular with women who are in love; St. Joseph (holding the Infant Jesus) is used to get a job. Many Voodoos believe a picture of the Virgin Mary in their homes will prevent illness, and that one of St. Peter (with the Key to Heaven) will bring great and speedy success in financial matters (without the Key to Heaven, St. Peter is still reliable in helping in the achievement of minor successes; the power of the picture is less, however). Pictures of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are believed to have the ability to cure organic diseases.” Source: Tallant, Robert. Voodoo in New Orleans. 1946. Reprint, Gretna, La.: United Kingdom, Pelican Publishing Company, 1983; Many of these Saints are African deities masqued under their names, including Blanc Dani (St. Michael), Yon Sue (St. Anthony), Mama You (Virgin Mary), and Papa Liba (St. Peter). St. Joseph might have also been Vériquité (Avrekete), but this is less well-attested as he is only mentioned in a work of fiction. While it is possible that St. Mary Magdalene was also an African deity disguised under her name, it is impossible to determine which one she was; the obvious alternative is that Mary Magdalene was simply Mary Magdalene. See: Anderson, Jeffrey E. Voodoo: An African American Religion. LSU Press, 2024.
This is not to suggest that Maman Brigitte was worshiped in 19th century Louisiana Voudou; there is little to no evidence of this. See: Anderson, Jeffrey E. Voodoo: An African American Religion. LSU Press, 2024; I have heard it rumored that Grann Brijit is sometimes identified with St. Mary Magdalene in Haitian Vodou, but have yet to find evidence of this. Interestingly, Milo Rigaud identified Baron Samedi with “Marie-Madeleine au sépulcre” (Saint Mary Magdalene at the Sepulchre). See: Rigaud, Milo. Vè-vè: Diagrammes Rituels Du Voudou. Spain, French and European Publications, 1974. p. 33. Retrieved from:https://books.google.com/books?id=8-HWAAAAMAAJ&focus=searchwithinvolume&q=madeleine; I would not be surprised if Grann Brijit has been identified with St. Mary Magdalene, as Marie-Madeleine is often traditionally portrayed with a skull (symbol of Golgotha).

There is also some evidence that Avrekete, a different but related vodún, was worshiped in New orleans. In Dahomean mythology, Avrekete is a child of Agbe, who is tovodún; see: Herskovits, Melville Jean. Dahomey, an Ancient West African Kingdom, Vol. II. United States, Northwestern University Press, 1967. p. 153. Retrieved from: https://archive.org/details/dahomeyancientwe0000hers/page/152/mode/2up?. The name Vériquité appears in Helen Pitkin Scherz’s fictional novel An Angel by Brevet (1904), and is likely derived from Avrekete. Because other deities described in this novel are attested by non fiction sources, it is possible that Avrekete was worshiped during this time period in New Orleans. This is further reason to include a character based on these ocean-themed vodún, due to the likelihood of their importance to Voudounsis in the port city.
