I finally got back to painting after the train wreck that was March is done! I swear the fates really hated March this year. First round we got the mini Meatwool Alchemy Lab Badge and the cookie bookmark! I plan on doing a gingerbread bookmark next since I really liked how the cookie bookmark came out. They'll be laminated and ready to equipped with clips to be attached to my main dolls if April proves to be a far kinder month (March can go in the toilet.)

inspired by my mutual @marbirds, who is always making beautiful bookmarks- i wanted to make some of my own!! i have more wip ones but i managed to finish this one all in one go! featuring stickers, patterned paper, and hand drawn elements.

a mini journaling game: Jersey Devils Don't Pump Gas!

You happen to pull up to a Pennsylvania gas station at the same time as the Jersey Devil.  Problem: they don't know how to pump their own gas.  Also, it's snowing hard as hell right now.

1. Describe the Jersey Devil.  What do they look like? What brings them to down to PA?  And what draws them to you?

2. How do you help the Jersey Devil pump their gas? Do you notice their predicament, or do they ask you for help?  Are you able to help them, or does someone else have to step in?

3. Once the gas situation is dealt with, the Jersey Devil explains they're going somewhere special for Christmas.  Where are they going?  Why are they going there?

4. Do the two of you part ways at this point?  Or do you join them, or perhaps they join you?

5. How does your story end?  Or is it just beginning?  If the two of you join up, where do you go?  If you both part ways, what are your parting words?

As promised, I did a gingerbread cookie bookmark to go with the first one. I am absolutely loving using the posca pen for the whites so far along with the gingerbread cookie of Bonemeal the Mutant Sheep in the middle. I'll be getting the mini badges and bookmarks laminated soon now that there are enough X3

just finished reading a regency au fanfic of my favourite ship and urgh, my inner historian/researcher is cringing.

i finished it, 'cause it wasn't very long and except for those few cringe moment, it was good, but it took me right out of the story and is the difference between just leaving kudos or also bookmarking the story to read again later.

half 1 of the main pairing is supposed to be a scullery maid in a grand country house, which is fine, except then she's lighting fires in the main rooms and tidying the library.... those are tasks for the housemaid, the scullery maid is in, you guessed it, the scullery, which is off the kitchen and is a 'below stairs' role, the lowest of the low in the servant hierarchy and would have 0 occasion to be seen by the master of the house, and although she might have started as one, the moment she started working in the main areas, her title would have changed and she would've been paid more

this upgrade could've happened since the master of the house, who poo-poohs social conventions, has reduced staff to 4 1/2. another improbability. at the time a grand town house would've needed at least a dozen or more staff to function efficiently. a grand country house/manor would've needed twice as many. even considering the closure of unused wings and the master of the house helping with heavy lifting tasks, only having a cook, a valet, a 'scullery' maid, a stable master and a laundry maid that only works 3 days a week is unrealistic to say the least. that is asking for a very poorly kept house indeed. it would at least need a butler and housekeeper to oversee the staff and household management.

speaking of the valet.... he would not be in charge of the household and the other servant. that would be the butler (and the housekeeper for the female staff). the valet is the equivalent of the lady's maid. he looks after his master's affairs (not just his toilet) and is high in the hierarchy but not at the top. a butler in exceptional circumstances (like the ones in the fic) might take on the additional tasks of a valet, but not the other way around.

and the laundry maid.... laundry especially in one of these grand houses, regardless of the half closed status and the very limited social gatherings happening, is a very involved and tiring process. it would not be a one person job and especially not only for 3 days a week. unless she takes work home with her, it's highly unlikely she'd manage to get things done within that time frame. and if she does take work home, she would probably be an outside laundress doing laundry for more people in the neighbourhood, rather than be the laundry maid for the household.

and then the wedding corset! well, seeing as it's her mil that bought the dress etc and that she's marrying into money (she's marrying the lord of the manor), she could've very well be wearing a corset, as these at the time tended to be reserved for these type of occasion for the wealthy. so that i can pass on, but then it says she only had the occasion to wear one once before... and there no, i've gotta stop you. for one, being a 'scullery' maid, she wouldn't have the occasion to wear one like that, since it would've been out of her league so to speak, what she would have worn every single day since she came of an age would have been stays. every single women, regardless of class would wear stays (more or less tight, but worn nonetheless). and stays are technically corsets, so the corset wouldn't have been that much of a difference except the style and construction.

then the wedding dress has apparently skirts so heavy she has difficulty maintaining her balance..... this... this is not regency style, like at all. especially considering that regardless of class wedding dresses at the time used to be a dress that you could wear again rather than a 'one occasion' type of garment. and regency style were flowing empire waist dresses, with very flowy lines and very few layers (compared to early and later periods), i don't see them being any kind of heavy, or at least not to the point of fucking with you balance!

and finally, on the wedding night (hehe) half 2 of the main pair, the master of the house, ends up in front of her is his drawers and... undershirt...! no, no, no. undershirts were not a thing until the early 20th century. the linen shirts men wore at the time (and before and after well into the victorian era) were considered 'skin garments' and the same level of undress as the chemise women wore. there was nothing underneath. it's why there were always linen, as they were easy to clean and could take the beating the laundry process was and was super breathable. the 'proper' clothes were the waistcoat and jacket and accessories, not the shirt itself. once dressed, you would barely see the shirt actually, and having your shirt showing was for very informal/close family/spouse to see, not proper at all.

it sounds nitpicky, but i don't know, i tend to expect a minimum of research of you're gonna write a multi chapter fic in a historical au, and these weren't obscure hand to check things. these facts took me 10/15 minutes to double check (i always do, as i might be remembering wrong or we might both be right). regency isn't even my area of historical interest, but these still took me right outta the story.

ah well, can't have them all i suppose.
