The intersection of COP and Model UN?

As a teen who once dreamt of working at the UN/World Bank, I was surprised to later discover as an adult that students participate in activities like Model UN where they get build critical thinking skills, practice negotiation and conflict resolution, while developing global, cultural and situational awareness as they represent countries they are assigned to with the purpose of achieving a common goal. It’s meant to mimic the real-life UN Security Council which brings together 15 countries (temporary and permanent members with the purpose of pursuing diplomacy and establishing the world order for a designated period of time and often pertaining to specific issues.

This week’s class was like taking a Model UN session and applying the format to a COP simulation. The Conference of the Parties (COP) facilitates coordination of efforts and unification of perspective for countries in their approach to combatting climate change. These countries come together to discuss and negotiate global actions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in alignment with targets outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement.

One of the most interesting things about how COP functions is the way in which representatives from almost every country in the world gather promote the interests of their own countries using a framework for the global community, and for this reason priorities sometimes diverge. World leaders and their delegations discuss everything from reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to climate adaptation strategies, to financing for climate solutions which includes financial assistance to developing countries. 

When I think about negotiation simulations, I think about how nominated speakers try to make best guesses of what works for billions of people, and how they sometimes get it right and sometimes don’t. I also think about how delicate of a balance it is to keep your country happy while also finding a middle ground with the rest of the world. People think COP is about climate commitments but it’s also about diplomacy, because without trusted allies and loyal constituents a representative of any country would be unable to achieve their goal. “When it comes to geopolitics, conflict resolution and peacekeeping skills; it is best to forget about such illusory abstractions as east and west or north and south and to realize who we really are and why we are really here” ― Wald Wassermann.

Laurids de Thura - Ny monografi om Danmarks store arkitekt

I en ny mammut monografi om Lauritz de Thurah giver kunsthistorikeren Claus M. Smidt et ubesværet, elegant og dybt fagligt indblik i både det, der skabte den store arkitekt og en ramme til at forstå, hvorfor vi stadig i dag elsker værker som Frelser Kirkes snoede spir, Det kgl. Palæ i Roskilde, Eremitageslottet og Gammel Holtegaard.

Bogen udkommer i dag i et smukt indbundet værk med 736 sider med fornemme fotos af Jens M. Lindhe og talrige illustrationer og tegninger. Takket være generøs støtte fra fonde er prisen 495,-.

Barok kappestrid

Hvem var størst? Hvem nød kongehusets gunst? Barok arkitekten Thurah eller rokokoens Eigtved. De to arkitekter arbejdede side om side for kongehuset og adelen, og har tegnet nogle af Danmarks mest elskede bygningsværker. Det skete i en tid, hvor det, vi i dag opfatter som den tunge barok, blev afløst af den lette og legende rokoko. Eftertiden har forsøgt at male et billede af to konkurrenter. Men sandheden er som altid langt mere nuanceret.

Mode og penge

Arkitekturens største fjender er ofte skiftende moderetninger - og centraladministrationen. 

Thurah kæmpede i sin samtid med begge, og 1800tallets opgør med “paryktidens” arkitektur og dekorationer betød nedrivning af det yndige Hirschholm i Hørsholm, der også var Struensee og dronningens tilholdssted, og Eremitageslottet fik en hård medfart i en ombygning, hvor en fornem restaurering afsluttet i 2011 genskabte store dele af Thurahs oprindelige interiør. 

Thurah var dybt forankret i dansk kultur gennem en lang slægt af akademikere og med et nysgerrigt kosmopolitisk udsyn. Han var trofast overfor arkitekturens klassiske idealer og ikke til fals for tilfældige modeluner. Han blev udfordret i sit formsprog af Eigtved, der i den grad havde fingeren på pulsen for, hvad der bevægede sig ude i verden. De samarbejdede sandsynligvis om Marmorbroens pavilloner, hvor den nederste del er typisk Eigtved, mens den øvre del kun kunne være Thurah, hvor formsproget genkendes i hans senere udformning af pavillonerne på Ledreborg. Ved Eigtveds pludselige død overtog Thurah færdiggørelsen af en lang række af hans værker, bl.a. ved opførelse af forhusene til Frederiks Hospital – i dag Designmuseum Danmark. Da rokokoen bygger på barokken, er færdiggørelserne med til at nuancere helheden.

Budgetter og statsadministration

Thurah fremstår i eftertiden som en flittig mand. Blandt arkitekter er han berømmet for sin evne til at formgive, at budgettere og styre byggeprojekter. Men det ændrede ikke ved, at en nidkær revisor Clausberg ved Partikulærkammeret, der som ivrig amatørarkitekt blandede sig både i økonomi og formsprog, og gjorde livet surt for Thurah. En oplevelse, nulevende arkitekter deler med samtidens krav til offentlige udbud. 

Flittig som han var, begavede han også eftertiden med udgivelserne Den Danske Vitruvius og Hafnia Hodierna, der stadig er hovedværker for arkitekter og kunsthistorikere med en skat af kobberstukne tavler der gengiver tidens bedste arkitektur.

Thurah trak sig, som adlet med et lille “de” foran sit navn, tilbage til Børglum Kloster i Nordjylland, hvor hans 2. kone kom fra, for ved Eigtveds død straks at blive trukket tilbage til København, hvor han satte et væsentlig præg på den nordlige del af Frederiksstaden og byggede en række værker, der stadig står den dag i dag.

Kappestriden

Men hvordan endte kappestriden. Thurah står som en principfast, myreflittig og ikke mindst nysgerrig mand. Det taler til hans hæder, at han aldrig har “villet sætte kniven i sin medbejler Eigtved”, som kunsthistorikeren Christian Elling skrev. Thurah og Eigtved levede med hinanden i samklang og i medgang og modgang. De har begge lært af hinanden og selvom de måske aldrig blev et egentligt makkerpar, var de med gensidig respekt og inspiration med til at formidle overgangen fra barok til rokoko. At deres værker stadig står blandt noget af det fornemste i dansk arkitektur, viser hvor langt man kan nå med gensidig faglig respekt.

Claus M Smidt, kunsthistoriker og tidl. seniorforsker ved Danmarks Kunstbibliotek. Han er en af Danmarks mest vidende specialister i arkitekturhistorie. Quick little update since it’s been literally forever since I posted, oops.

Second semester is going pretty well, I’m really enjoying my schedule since most days I’m done with classes by noon. I’ve been getting pretty involved with student organizations like Model UN, and our martial arts club, which I help teach. Spring break is right around the corner, and that means so are midterms! You can catch me studying in our campus’s Einstein Bagels - their vanilla cold brew is the best!

Next month is a trip to Barcelona for our first international MUN conference, and I cannot be more excited or grateful for this opportunity! Martial arts is also hosting a field trip to our local Tae Kwon Do academy to broaden our horizons.
