5. How do you translate the world of Minecraft to fit into your fanfics when you keep the original setting?

i have this whole like. headcanon au thing about splinters of a player and how players being able to split off parts of themselves to play on and experience other worlds, and their home world is wherever they keep the majority of their total self. in terms of minecraft mechanics i stay pretty vanilla and borrow things from other ppl- the idea of there being “modlands” where ppl can get non-vanilla items, and of course communicators being things like the option menu and chat.

Those Pesky Place Names -- This Week in Hunting Darkness

Hello Hunters, Darkhearts, and Beasts!

After quite a bit more recovery than I had anticipated, I've finally begun writing again. I can't yet do my usual 3 hour burst (sometimes followed by another later that day) of pure story writing, but by doing a bunch of smaller sessions this week I have managed to write the third draft for Season 2 of From the Bay of Fangs, and I'm very happy with that.

I've also started worldbuilding again and have run into that age old problem: place names.

Now, personally, I don't like creating place names that are just modern words put together unless the place I'm naming is young and would have been named relatively recently. Place names do have specific origins, but they are often hard to trace, at least in the countries I'm most familiar with. As an example: I live in Dordrecht, which comes from its old name Thuredrecht, which means something like "pass through", as this is where you could most easily cross the local river.

That specific type of mutation in place names is very fun to me, though. As a result, what I like to do is dig up online dictionaries of earlier forms of specific languages, create a portmonteau, and then try to trim it down the way it might be if people constantly mentioned it over centuries. For instance: the country of Iseron took its name from the Old English word for iron (iser) and crown (corona), because its geography and part of its history is based on those of England and it was ruled by a travelling court that managed to hold onto power through access to really good iron for their arms and armour. As a result, their land was called Isercorona, which slimmed down to Iserona, which slimmed down to Iseron.

The main reason I do this is that I want place names in the same region to sound like they are actually from the same region without having to create an entire conlang, which I don't like doing. Places in England-based Iseron are called Fenblith, Ditmus, Gladill, and Kellkey, while places in Scotland-and-Ireland-based Waynairde are called Lochaid, Cleathad, Iosabale, and Ceilplean, using Old English and both Scottish Gaelic and Irish respectively.

(I will add that a cool side effect of this method is that place names in the fictional world of Hunting Darkness directly reference my source materials. To be clear: the people I write about are entirely fictional and their customs and cultures are based at most on my own fantasies and associations surrounding my source material and heavily influenced by things I find cool, things I think the narrative needs, and things I believe would be natural results of the sudden emergence of immortal monsters. However, Hunting Darkness does have specific themes I'm working hard to incorporate, including the process of neocolonialism, the stratification of power, and the self-destructive nature of perpetual growth, and openly referencing Scotland and Ireland when describing the first region to fall under direct influence of a place based largely on England isn't an accident.)

But now, dear friends, I have arrived in Modland, based on my very own Netherlands. I find myself creating names like Winsterdam, Hellebosch, Duinmonde, and Wilgewaard, and wondering "Will people be able to read this without having a stroke?"

I stand by my method, and indeed by its implications, because I think this way the place names add a worthwhile layer of depth to the world of Hunting Darkness. But damn if I'm not nervous for when I start hitting regions based on places whose languages I have never heard and are not written in my alphabet...

I'm sure I'll find a way, though. Perhaps the Fenblithians will just change the names to something they find more fitting or easy to pronounce. Certainly wouldn't be unprecedented.

Here are the two decent mods if you want them yourself. Yes, Modland and World of Mods has good mods. But, it's like finding a needle in a haystack and some mods like the Ibishu CrossSport for example are stolen from the repository.

So yeah, for one of my 200 subscriber specials, I decided to take a look at some mods from Modland, World of Mods and, ModsGamingUS. Three sites that are hated in the BeamNG.drive community for one reason or another. These sites are home to some of the worst mods that you can get especially paid ones. There are so many bad mods, stolen mods, poorly put together meshslaps and, overpriced paid mods on this site that I'll be here all day making this video. But, I decided to narrow it down to only a handful. I would not recommend you to download mods from any of those sites unless if you are planning to get a good mod from there.

He leaves bits and pieces of himself behind everywhere he goes.

Sometimes it’s intentional, a slow steady creeping thing as he relaxes and sprawls and takes his time investigating and incorporating the new resources that he finds. He wanders through the structures of himself, part of but separate from the world he lives in, emerging where he chooses depending on what he wants to look at. It startles the others sometimes, when he decides to check on his far flung pieces. After all, to them, he simply appears from nowhere and past experiences have taught him that redstone is much easier to explain than his own workings. Not that he hasn’t tried. Doc and Stress were the only ones to even slightly understand the last time he tried.

Other times it’s… really not. Intentional that is. He…. Sheds. for lack of a better term and as embarrassing as that sounds. those bits are carried off by the winds and the rains, settling wherever they find a place. Most times, they land in places already familiar. New to him but places he’s already existed. Those he leaves alone to grow for the most part. Sometimes they land and anchor in interesting places. The Badlands, the Modlands, the Deep End once or twice, and when the whim takes him he’ll do as he always does and grow himself anew then wander off to explore once more. Sometimes, he ends up being carried, unintentionally for the most part. Those normally die off on their own but others he maintains. Not much, or to any great depth, but it’s a very unobtrusive way to keep track of his friends. Very few of them know enough to notice the green fuzz he leaves behind when he inhabits an area for too long. Those that do…. Well. He knows Doc for one, has simply forgotten or doesn’t care if he hasn’t.

Interesting places and interesting people doesn’t always mean things are safe for him to grow. Still the risk and reward are often worth occasionally losing pieces of himself. Life is like that sometimes. He stares down at the book in his hand. Grian‘s Life experiments even more so. 3rd life had been a happy accident, he had simply been curious to see what so many of his friends had been doing in those unassuming plains away from Hermitcraft. Last Life had been happenstance. Double and Limited life had been intentional. The chance to play, to grow, to experiment, without worrying about wasted resources because he would loose that piece anyways? And the knowledge gained? It’s worth the emotional stuff he thinks as he signs the invitation book to let Grian know he’s accepted.

Task done, he relaxes spreading his toes into the dirt beneath him once more leaving minuscule traces of himself behind. One thing still puzzles him as he turns back to digging up clay for the bricks he needs. Given everything that happened in the life experiment He still doesn’t know how to feel about Cleo‘s awareness and apparently willingness to continue to carry him.

Hi hello! You’ve not sent me anything yet and I appreciate the hermit propaganda. I am a writer tho and not much of an artist and the idea of moss etho was so very very fascinating that I’ve now written a bit on my phone as I sit in transit. I’ll be adding it on to this post via my writing tumblr in like a couple of minutes. Couldn’t do much for the arctic Bdubs bit though, sorry about that.
