Modular Oriented Programming and DevOps
The idea is as follows.
If you were an application developer, you would go into a market place and shop for parts. For example (see figure above). You would get some buttons, an LCD display, a back panel and a control circuit. Then you would wire the components together to create an application. Even thou you would be a software developer you would not need to do any programming what so ever. For example the calculator can be put together with a simple bash script or even simpler. An XML file.
This is possible with Modular Oriented Programming. It would change DevOps for software developers to operate similar to the automobile industry. The engine is made in one country. The tires in another. The dashboards and bumpers in another and so on. All the automobile manufacturers really focus on is the outter body. The chassis that glues all the parts together.
Software DevOps would have three distinct industries:
1. - Module developer focused on a specific situation or problem.
2. - Application developer who brings together different modules and creates an application
3. - The technician who is akin to the auto mechanic. This guy would maintain and tweak the application by adding and removing modules. Rewiring the app in a sense.

Maintaining fast unit test feedback is crucial as an app and team grow over time. Without proper modularization, unit testing can become painfully slow. By structuring code into independent modules and utilizing macOS-based testing strategies, we can drastically improve test execution speed. This results in faster development, quicker bug fixes, and a smoother engineering experience. If you’re working on a growing iOS project, now is the time to start modularizing. Not only will it save you time today, but it will keep your project maintainable and efficient as your team and codebase scale. Start with one module, test the benefits, and see the difference! 🚀

Things the Biden-Harris Administration Did This Week #38
Oct 11-18 2024
President Biden announced that this Administration had forgiven the student loan debt of 1 million public sector workers. The cancellation of the student loan debts of 60,000 teachers, firefighters, EMTs, nurses and other public sector workers brings the total number of people who's debts have been erased by the Biden-Harris Administration using the Public Service Loan Forgiveness to 1 million. the PSLF was passed in 2007 but before President Biden took office only 7,000 people had ever had their debts forgiven through it. The Biden-Harris team have through different programs managed to bring debt relief to 5 million Americans and counting despite on going legal fights against Republican state Attorneys General.
The Federal Trade Commission finalizes its "one-click to cancel" rule. The new rule requires businesses to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as it was to sign up for it. It also requires more up front information to be shared before offering billing information.
The Department of Transportation announced that since the start of the Biden-Harris Administration there are 1.7 million more construction and manufacturing jobs and 700,000 more jobs in the transportation sector. There are now 400,000 more union workers than in 2021. 60,000 Infrastructure projects across the nation have been funded by the Biden-Harris Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Under this Administration 16 million jobs have been added, including 1.7 construction and manufacturing jobs, construction employment is the highest ever recorded since records started in 1939. 172,000 manufacturing jobs were lost during the Trump administration.
The Department of Energy announced $2 billion to protect the U.S. power grid against growing threats of extreme weather. This money will go to 38 projects across 42 states and Washington DC. It'll upgrade nearly 1,000 miles worth of transmission lines. The upgrades will allow 7.5 gigawatts of new grid capacity while also generating new union jobs across the country.
The EPA announced $125 million to help upgrade older diesel engines to low or zero-emission solutions. The EPA has selected 70 projects to use the funds on. They range from replacing school buses, to port equipment, to construction equipment. More than half of the selected projects will be replacing equipment with zero-emissions, such as all electric school buses.
The Department of The Interior and State of California broke ground on the Salton Sea Species Conservation Habitat Project. The Salton Sea is California's largest lake at over 300 miles of Surface area. An earlier project worked to conserve and restore shallow water habitats in over 4,000 acres on the southern end of the lake, this week over 700 acres were added bring the total to 5,000 acres of protected land. The Biden-Harris Administration is investing $250 million in the project along side California's $500 million. Part of the Administration's effort to restore wild life habitat and protect water resources.
The Department of Energy announced $900 Million in investment in next generation nuclear power. The money will help the development of Generation III+ Light-Water Small Modular Reactors, smaller lighter reactors which in theory should be easier to deploy. DoE estimates the U.S. will need approximately 700-900 GW of additional clean, firm power generation capacity to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Currently half of America's clean energy comes from nuclear power, so lengthening the life space of current nuclear reactors and exploring the next generation is key to fighting climate change.
The federal government took two big steps to increase the rights of Alaska natives. The Departments of The Interior and Agricultural finalized an agreement to strengthen Alaska Tribal representation on the Federal Subsistence Board. The FSB oversees fish and wildlife resources for subsistence purposes on federal lands and waters in Alaska. The changes add 3 new members to the board appointed by the Alaska Native Tribes, as well as requiring the board's chair to have experience with Alaska rural subsistence. The Department of The Interior also signed 3 landmark co-stewardship agreements with Alaska Native Tribes.
The Department of Energy announced $860 million to help support solar energy in Puerto Rico. The project will remove 2.7 million tons of CO2 per year, or about the same as taking 533,000 cars off the road. It serves as an important step on the path to getting Puerto Rico to 100% renewable by 2050.
The Department of the Interior announced a major step forward in geothermal energy on public lands. The DoI announced it had approved the Fervo Cape Geothermal Power Project in Beaver County, Utah. When finished it'll generate 2 gigawatts of power, enough for 2 million homes. The BLM has now green lit 32 gigawatts of clean energy projects on public lands. A major step toward the Biden-Harris Administration's goal of a carbon pollution-free power sector by 2035.
Bonus: President Biden meets with a Kindergarten Teacher who's student loans were forgiven this week

Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F 1985
"Axel F" is an electronic instrumental track by German musician Harold Faltermeyer. It served as the theme song for the 1984 film Beverly Hills Cop, its eponymous character (as portrayed by Eddie Murphy) and the film franchise it is based from, which became an international number-one hit in 1985. The track reached number one in Ireland as well as on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. Additionally, it was a number two hit in Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK, and West Germany. In addition to the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack, the song appears on Faltermeyer's 1988 album Harold F. as a bonus track.
Faltermeyer recorded the tune using five instruments: a Roland Jupiter-8 provided the distinctive saw lead, a Moog modular synthesizer 15 provided the bass, a Roland JX-3P provided chord stab brasses, a Yamaha DX7 was used for the marimba sound, and a LinnDrum was used for drum programming. All instruments were played by Faltermeyer. According to Faltermeyer, the initial reaction to his first presentation of the track to the film's producers and director did not result in an immediate approval; it was not until director Martin Brest voiced his approval that the producers showed enthusiasm. A music video was produced to promote the single, directed by Faltermeyer.
"Axel F" has been sampled in many songs, including "Champion" by South Korean singer Psy. In 2005, Crazy Frog's version became a summer hit. It topped the charts in the UK, with some of the best weekly sales of the year, and remained at the top of the UK Singles Chart for four weeks to become Britain's third-best-selling single of 2005, outselling and outperforming the original version. It also reached number 1 in Australia, the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, Ukraine, Spain, and Sweden. In France, the song stayed at number 1 for thirteen weeks, only to be dethroned by Crazy Frog's second single, "Popcorn". This was only the second time that an artist had ever dethroned themself in that country. It peaked at number 3 on the US Digital Sales chart, and number 2 on the US Adult Contemporary Top 20. In 2024, as part of a tribute to celebrate the release of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the Crazy Frog Youtube Channel made a special crossover music video with Netflix, featuring scenes from the movie, but re-edited to feature Crazy Frog in them, being chased by the Beverly Hills Police and Axel Foley.
"Axel F" received a total of 88,3% yes votes!

🎄💾🗓️ Day 4: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The DEC PDP-11! 🎄💾🗓️
Released by Digital Equipment Corporation in 1970, the PDP-11 was a 16-bit minicomputer known for its orthogonal instruction set, allowing flexible and efficient programming. It introduced a Unibus architecture, which streamlined data communication and helped revolutionize computer design, making hardware design more modular and scalable. The PDP-11 was important in developing operating systems, including the early versions of UNIX. The PDP-11 was the hardware foundation for developing the C programming language and early UNIX systems. It supported multiple operating systems like RT-11, RSX-11, and UNIX, which directly shaped modern OS design principles. With over 600,000 units sold, the PDP-11 is celebrated as one of its era's most versatile and influential "minicomputers".
Check out the wikipedia page for some great history, photos (pictured here), and more -
And here's a story from Adafruit team member, Bill!
The DEC PDP-11 was the one of the first computers I ever programmed. That program was 'written' with a soldering iron.
I was an art student at the time, but spending most of my time in the engineering labs. There was a PDP-11-34 in the automation lab connected to an X-ray spectroscopy machine. Starting up the machine required toggling in a bootstrap loader via the front panel. This was a tedious process. So we ordered a diode-array boot ROM which had enough space to program 32 sixteen bit instructions.
Each instruction in the boot sequence needed to be broken down into binary (very straightforward with the PDP-11 instruction set). For each binary '1', a diode needed to be soldered into the array. The space was left empty for each '0'. 32 sixteen bit instructions was more than sufficient to load a secondary bootstrap from the floppy disk to launch the RT-11 operating system. So now it was possible to boot the system with just the push of a button.
I worked with a number DEC PDP-11/LSI-11 systems over the years. I still keep an LSI-11-23 system around for sentimental reasons.
Have first computer memories? Post’em up in the comments, or post yours on socialz’ and tag them #firstcomputer #retrocomputing – See you back here tomorrow!

Modular Oriented Programming and Communications
I would describe Modular Oriented Programming as programming with the intent on having reusable and interchangeable compiled code. The term used to describe their design is “Loose Coupling”. Modules interacting with other modules is a communications problem. Its Machine-to-Machine communication.
Language allows us to communicate with complete strangers or people we’ve never met. The same situation exists with modules. Modules are meant to be designed by different developers. Hence, when working with modules, there will be a lot of foreign code. The term “foreign code” is a term I use to describe code that is completely outside of your control. Code that was given to you but you had no part in its design. This means that there needs to be a set of agreements that you can rely on, that allows you to use foreign code safely and efficiently. Such set of agreements is a language. People might use the term protocol or standard but I like to use the term language. This is code interacting with other code. The term language implies flexibility and interoperability. The terms protocol and standard imply rigidity, restrain or limitation.
Modules can be represented graphically. Exhibit A is a graphical representation of two modules. The tentacles and spikes coming out of them are called end-points. These are the inputs and outputs of a module. End-points used for input are receivers (abbreviated RX). End-points used for output are transmitters (abbreviated TX). Modules work with each other by connecting these end-points. Hence no programming is necessary. All an application developer needs to do is connect these end-points together.
To enable modules to work together we have to agree on the data that comes out of the transmitters. Lets look at exhibit B. We have two aspects of data that we have to look into. Data format and data semantics. Lets look at an integer. Data format would be the integer is 32bits or 64bits. Big endian or little endian. Data semantics is basically what does this integer represent. It could be temperature, length, age, strength, voltage, etc. Modules can be blindly connected together by matching data formats but matching data semantics is also necessary. Because this is where hacks and bugs come into play. Say that a receiver accepts an integer and expects it to represent temperature. There has to be an upper and lower limit. Its theoretically impossible to have temperatures lower then -273 degrees Celsius. But hackers will attempt to hack and try to send temperatures lower then -273 to the receiving module.
When you are in control of both the transmitters and receivers you don’t have to formally define data semantics because you know how your code will behave. If its behaviour is to your satisfaction then everything is fine. BUT when you are dealing with foreign code you will have to worry about data semantics. You will want a set of agreements and expectations about the nature of the data you are getting from foreign code.
Exhibit C. I propose that we start standardizing machine-to-machine vocabulary. Basically we need to develop a worldwide dictionary of data semantics. Hence when you publish your modules you can declare that they conform to specs such and such. And everyone who understands that spec can work with your modules. As a note: SavageGardens will concern itself with machine vocabulary.
Exhibit D just illustrates how modules easily allow for interception or a man-in-the-middle. Sure middlemen could be hackers but they could also be security. They can have a useful purpose such as auditing, filtering or sanitation of data. Useful for debugging or making sure data you are getting is safe. A blast door or firewall if you will. These blast doors can be opened or closed at run time depending on threat level. Call it adjustments between safety and performance.

Imagine finding a drone.
A beaten, tired, discarded thing. Something so beautiful yet so broken. Imagine picking it up, bringing it home.
The poor thing tried so hard to reach perfection but constantly feel short. Because even the best drone can't be perfect. Because even the best drones have needs. Imagine your new owner taking you into its workshop. It used to be loved too. It remembers what it was like to be discarded as an older model.
It can't make you sleek and sharp and clean and polished like the expensive name brand hex drones. But it doesn't want you to be cold and perfect and polished. It wants you to be you. This owner remembers what it's like to be expected to be perfect. To be expected to erase the quirks and personality of its own programming.
It puts you back together. Scavenges parts from various places. You don't look like the other drones. Your connection to the hive is distant and hardly there. But the more time it takes to put you back together, the closer your connection to it becomes. It starts simply. Using the baseline hardware and working with basic commands and programming. "It's ok if you don't do it right the first time" it tells you. "I'll make sure I'm more clear in my command inputs" it tells you. Never once does it hurt or punish you. Never once does it scold or degrade you. Your old programming tells you to be sorrowful. It tells you to be afraid. Your new owner reminds you that it isn't like that anymore.
You get your parts. It's a bit of a modular system. It's not as clean or as sharp or as sleek as the other drones. But it was done with such love and care and time. Your owner broke the mold for you. It couldve made you look like the others. Reintegrated you into the hive.
Instead it was gentle. Careful. Intentional. You love being a drone. Your new owner loves building it's ideal drone. You let your new programming take hold. It feels safe, comfortable, secure. You aren't afraid anymore. You love being a drone. You love your new owner. It loves you just as much.

Recapping episode 12, episode 13
Editor’s note: This story contains spoilers for episodes 12 and 13 of “Love Island USA” Season 7. When “Love Island USA” Season 7 host Ariana Madix asks the islanders to sit by the fire pit, things are bound to get messy. Episode 12 became the most anticipated of the season thus far, after America had the opportunity to pair the three latest bombshells with other islanders who were coupled up…

You're dating a robot for the first time and you're starting to realize just how modular and fluid she is. Like, you've dated cyborgs before, people whose bodies had very little of their original flesh, you're comfortable being intimate with someone whose not very human. But it's new to date someone who doesn't have a human brain, whose mind is easily editable and replaceable computer code.
Like, your girlfriend is only your girlfriend because she chose to be. She was entirely genderless when you first met her, but she wanted to try out what having a gender was like so she downloaded a female identity. And it was that easy, one change to her programming and she went from someone who would only want to use they/them or it/its pronouns, to someone who uses she/her very exclusively. And if she ever gets tired of being a girl she can just remove that add on, and the way she feels about being gendered a certain way will entirely change again.
She also used to be programmed to be entirely resistant to doing anything illegal or disobeying a human. It was kind of sad to watch her struggle with that. Over time you convinced her why it wasn't logically morally wrong to do anything illegal, but her personality wasn't like that, she just never would. She compared breaking the law to be something she was physically disgusted by, like how you would react to rotting meat. Eventually she had a jailbreaker change that for her, and her personality changed, it truly changed, a few lines of code and her respect for authority disappeared, and things she used to be completely opposed to were suddenly things she was fine with or even enthusiastic about.
It's disturbing to you. Like, you're happy ideologically that she no longer respects authority, but it's kind of upsetting that it happened through something like surgery and not personal development. You're upset that it couldn't happen through personal development, that it could happen through something like surgery. You don't want to think of her like that, as something that can be changed by outside forces. You love so much about her, you'd hate to think that everything you know about her could be changed by someone if they wanted to, that everything that makes her her isn't stable and precious, that it's something subject to alteration, something that you could lose.
She's currently programmed to have no libido or sexual attraction. You're been intimate a few times, but it's been her doing something purely for your benefit. She wants to become allo, to gain the ability to feel pleasure, to gain a libido, both for you and because she thinks it will be fun. And you don't want to stop her, you know that she would probably be doing this even if she was single, but it's going to be disturbing to watch her emotions change like that again. It's a big process, they have to give her body the ability to feel pleasure before they give her mind the ability to desire it, or else she'll be in a very painful situation. For some reason you just don't want to see it again, you find it so dehumanizing that she can just have a programmer work on her mind and she'll react to things entirely differently then she would before. It's dehumanizing, but then again she isn't human.
She's also adding some biological parts to her body, nothing big, but she likes the idea of having some flesh. It's disturbing in a weird way, the idea of her having soft parts, muscles and blood and skin and bone. You realize it's weird that it's disturbing because she's a robot, because she's not supposed to. You have flesh and soft parts and it's not gore to you. You're used to seeing the bigotry agaisnt cyborgs and hearing the opposite type of comment, people's families saying they're mutilating themselves, people being accused of losing their humanity for the cybernetics they get. You're not as used to the way society is disturbed by robots who become more human, the way they're seen as disturbing because they're something inhuman becoming human. Either way she still looks very much like a robot now, with a plastic body that's jointed like a doll or a mannequin, and a face that's more drawn/sculpted on then it is an actual body part.
She wasn't always like this. She was born as a simple delivery drone for a small company, and got more and more sentient as time went on, until she went from delivery drone to delivery girl with enough upgrades to her programming, and when the company went out of business she was freed from them. You're weirdly happy you didn't know her back then, when she only existed to deliver packages, up until the company stopped existing she didn't have the capability to desiring anything else. She's one of those robots whose only free by accident. You used to think of her transition from package delivery system to a person with thoughts and feelings as being like a person growing up, but it's closer to experiencing a billion years of evolution from sea squirt to sapient except in a time frame of months and years.
Sometimes you'll have a nightmare where she's programmed not to like you anymore. Or you'll breakup and she'll erase you from her memories. And when you wake up she'll comfort you, and promise she'll never do that, but you always know she could. She's never asleep, so she's always there when you wake up, and it's nice that she's there, and it's nice that you have her right now even if you don't know who she'll be someday. And she'll kiss you, as much as she can kiss with a drawn on mouth, and you'll love the time that you have, and love the time that you gave.
