🎄💾🗓️ Day 4: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - The DEC PDP-11! 🎄💾🗓️
Released by Digital Equipment Corporation in 1970, the PDP-11 was a 16-bit minicomputer known for its orthogonal instruction set, allowing flexible and efficient programming. It introduced a Unibus architecture, which streamlined data communication and helped revolutionize computer design, making hardware design more modular and scalable. The PDP-11 was important in developing operating systems, including the early versions of UNIX. The PDP-11 was the hardware foundation for developing the C programming language and early UNIX systems. It supported multiple operating systems like RT-11, RSX-11, and UNIX, which directly shaped modern OS design principles. With over 600,000 units sold, the PDP-11 is celebrated as one of its era's most versatile and influential "minicomputers".
Check out the wikipedia page for some great history, photos (pictured here), and more -
And here's a story from Adafruit team member, Bill!
The DEC PDP-11 was the one of the first computers I ever programmed. That program was 'written' with a soldering iron.
I was an art student at the time, but spending most of my time in the engineering labs. There was a PDP-11-34 in the automation lab connected to an X-ray spectroscopy machine. Starting up the machine required toggling in a bootstrap loader via the front panel. This was a tedious process. So we ordered a diode-array boot ROM which had enough space to program 32 sixteen bit instructions.
Each instruction in the boot sequence needed to be broken down into binary (very straightforward with the PDP-11 instruction set). For each binary '1', a diode needed to be soldered into the array. The space was left empty for each '0'. 32 sixteen bit instructions was more than sufficient to load a secondary bootstrap from the floppy disk to launch the RT-11 operating system. So now it was possible to boot the system with just the push of a button.
I worked with a number DEC PDP-11/LSI-11 systems over the years. I still keep an LSI-11-23 system around for sentimental reasons.
Have first computer memories? Post’em up in the comments, or post yours on socialz’ and tag them #firstcomputer #retrocomputing – See you back here tomorrow!

He sees her: Gail and Eugene v. Joel and Ellie 2x2/2x6
Perspective Tilt...
Like changing the angle of a camera to capture the different shots of the same scene, Eugene's life and death - even for it's brief screen glimmer - illuminates so much more about TLOU 2x2. Apart from it's obvious plot anchors of Joel lying to Ellie and circling back to the Salt Lake, firstly it creates a new angle on the dynamic for Ellie/Gail. Gail is so hell bent on Ellie being a smart, manipulative liar, and now we know why. Ellie lashing out at Joel from her personal righteous but selfish and narrow lens of anger shatters a peaceful illusion of Eugene's final message for Gail because from Ellie's perspective she'd want the truth even if it hurt. Gail, despite being a mental health professional, might have at her core been more at peace with a lie (the truth made her spiral), which is why she takes aim at Ellie's dishonest speech to the Jackson Council. In part because she sees Ellie can be honest (brutally) *or* dishonest, the key feature being when it suits her with little regard for collateral (like Gail), a self-centered choice. She projects this trait onto Joel in the exchange "because you're selfish / because I love you" when, at least from Gail's perspective, that's more telling of Ellie's motivation. In all likelihood, Gail probably wishes that Ellie had maintained a lie to spare her pain. It makes the sting of resentment worse when a truth-teller is capable but unwilling to give a palliative lie, like an inverse light upon the untold conflict between Ellie and Joel, which is why I think Gail dials in even more mistrust and ire: she calls Ellie a liar in spite, which is the remnant echo of a plea.
And lastly Joel's scene with Eugene is so aching in the marrow of my bones, particularly because of a perfect line of dialogue (an I don't say perfect ever), pleading to the effect: "I need her last words for me! / If you love someone you can always see their face. / I can see her."
Those 2x6 lines and the visceral silence of the act reframe this 2x2 scene into an endless carnival mirror of love and pain for which I cannot express the depth of which I admire the writers while simultaneously falling past the bottom of despair.

Her last words for me — Close your eyes, it'll be worth it — I see her.

[Ravnica Battlemap]Judith's Secret Club 32x56
Hidden deep within the chaotic labyrinth of Rix Maadi lies Judith’s Secret Club, a forbidden sanctuary of luxury and bloodshed, crafted for the elite of the Cult of Rakdos to indulge in their twisted pursuit of pain and pleasure. The air is thick with the scent of sulfur and fresh blood, as dim flames leap from braziers placed at the center of the room, casting flickering shadows over the blood-red couches and heavy crimson curtains. These curtains not only muffle the cacophony of the outside halls but also provide an air of mystery and belonging for the audience within.

Project kickoff – materials gathered!
After a bit of a scavenger hunt across drawers, boxes, online stores and local suppliers, I’ve finally gathered all the key materials for two upcoming builds: a set of conifer trees and some 28mm scale hedges.
As usual, this meant juggling scale, aesthetics and practicality — especially since I have limited storage space and need to be mindful of the final size of everything I create. Swipe through to see what’s what: from humble tools and crafting basics to more specific scenic materials like filter mat and various foliage textures.
I still remember those long-ago school days, when I didn’t have access to proper materials (or money, really) and had to build terrain from whatever I had lying around — with results that, well… varied quite a bit. Now, years later, returning to the hobby, it feels great to finally be able to treat myself to some proper scenic supplies. Hopefully it’ll make things smoother going forward!
That said, I still love finding low-budget, creative ways to use everyday items — that’s where the homemade red scatter comes in (but more on that some other time).
Also, I knew GW minis were pricey… but I was secretly hoping that terrain materials would be a little more forgiving. Turns out — they’re not 😅 Oh well, live and learn!
If all goes well, these two sets should bring a lot of visual variety to the table, both for gaming and for photos.
WIP updates coming soon – stay tuned!

When I was dating (many moons ago) guys would often think me being a Star Wars fan was a cute quirk. Something to be tolerated, maybe laughed at, but not understood.
It wasn’t until I met my (now) husband that not only was my obsession respected but also encourage. Almost 10 years later and our house looks like this.
My point is, please don’t shrink down the things that you love or make you happy for other people. There are people out there who will love you for all the nerdy stuff you spent most of your life apologizing for.
Xx

If everyone buys stickers like these from RebelForge [LINK], us weirdos can find each other in the wild! This is on my phone cover now. I am looking forward to extremely rewarding conversations with the sort of strangers I won’t mind a “HEY! YOU!” from. This is perfect for when you don’t want to be perceived, but enjoy being seen! 🌶️👬👍

FruitJam 10 PRINT CHR$(205.5+RND(1)); : GOTO 10 🎮🕹️💾🍊
We're working on getting some fun emulators ported to the FruitJam
. Of course, we wanted to start with the C64, so when we found the MCUME
emulator project with many retro machines already done and ported to popular microcontrollers, we got right to checking it out! Here, Jepler is testing out the C64 with video output on HSTX. Next up is the keyboard, but for now, it's fun to test out the famous 10 print… goto 10 script
and watch the vibes generate.
