Seeing all the StEx role play blogs pop up makes me realize that if I really wanted to I could just make a CB RP blog and just post things my version of CB would about work and the other freight with the occasional “going radio silent for a few days, just know I and my freight are safe.” Every few weeks. decoding perfect love's encoded messages

perfect love's code contains secret messages in a few different ciphers/codes. these messages are from the perspectives of milo's three forms, as well as text in plain english from eris. this post lists and decodes all these messages.

this is applicable to version 1.0 of the game. if there's any more added in future updates, i'll update this post.

the lines with scrambled letters are in caesar cipher, with the letter shifts varying between lines. these lines are from the perspective of pre milo.

the lines with strings of double digit numbers are in nihilist cipher, with alphabet abcdefghiklmnopqrstuvwxyz and keyword manipulation. these lines are from the perspective of manipulation milo.

the lines with strings of dots and dashes are in morse code. these lines are from the perspective of violence milo.

the lines in plain english are from the perspective of eris.

each encoded message has its decoded form directly below it in italics. decoded lines may be adjusted for readability.

Okay so I’ve been chewing on it and whatever Sana is up to, it’s extremely fucking weird and we’re missing a fuckload of information that ought to be available (though it’s possible the crew has this info and we, the audience, simply haven’t been given it yet).

What we know:

1. Sana disappeared from her mission somewhere between the 24 and 48 hour mark

2. She was meeting with a Super Secret Contact for MacGuffin reasons

3. There was no sign of struggle— she seems to have landed and left her ship voluntarily, though this doesn’t preclude coercion, blackmail, etc.

4. She had the ability to send an encoded message to Arkady pretty much as soon as everyone was reunited, presumably with a sci-fi burner phone

Item (4) obviously raises the most questions, but it also gives us the most clues. The timing, specifically, is odd— Arkady was sending messages all day, so it can’t have been backlogged and waiting for signal. Seeing as she received the message literally moments after stepping on the ship, I think the timing is not a coincidence. The most likely option, in my opinion, is that the message was somehow configured to send whenever Arkady’s comms unit reconnected with E.L.L.A., but it’s not impossible that Sana has eyes on them somehow.

The bigger question, here, is why Sana sent this message to Arkady instead of Commander Violet/Thasia, and why she sent it in code. If Sana has had messaging capabilities AT ALL, they should have been the first to know. And the only reason to encode a message is because you either don’t trust the people you’re around when you’re sending it, or because you don’t trust the people who might be around when it’s received. (Even if she only had access to numbers for whatever reason, there were less obscure ways to encode this. Send the numbers flip-phone style. Send in Morse code with 0 and 1 as dot and dash. Send it with 1-26 as A-Z. Anything but a musical clue that only means something to the people who know you very well.)

The other thing that’s driving me a little bit up the wall is all of the information it seems like we should have access to. Such as:

1. Where was Sana’s ship found???? I don’t care if we don’t have context for the planet, why isn’t this literally the first thing we learn??? Was her ship found near a city? In the middle of the ocean? In a desert? Orbiting a star? Why don’t we know this why isn’t this available what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck—

2. How long was Sana supposed to be gone? This makes more sense that we don’t know, since this was a top secret mission and all, but it also is important because depending on how the mission was supposed to go, it’s not impossible that Sana was able to meet with her contact already. Assuming the mission was meant to take the full three or so weeks between when she left and when the attack is meant to happen, this seems unlikely, but it’s not out of the question that she was simply sent out on the mission as soon as the contact was deemed credible. It would be sorta stupid to leave the lynchpin of your very important secret attack hanging until the last possible minute if you could avoid it. At the very least, we should have details about the make and fuel level of her ship that would give clues as to her mission parameters.

3. What was the last message she was able to send out before she went missing? It’s almost certainly an asinine progress report but not knowing that for sure leaves space for it to be very important and if it’s very important then it should have been in the briefing and it’s just giving me a very nagging feeling is all.

4. This isn’t really *missing* per se and I kind of doubt it will become important but I think it’s weird that it seemed to take a while to mount this rescue mission. Between the minisode and episode one, Juniper finished and aired her documentary installment, and Arkady was already relistening to it. It felt like several days to maybe a week had passed between her disappearance and the team receiving clearance, which would be fine except apparently this mission was extremely extremely important. If this mission is so so so important and you don’t even know how long it was supposed to take (as noted in missing item #2, important info that they should have given if they had it) surely it is of paramount importance you send out a rescue team immediately. And then sending out a shitty, poorly armed ship to do it— it’s reasonable to believe that it’s all that was available, but all of these little details are really sticking for me.

Anyways I think the Rooks are bad and I think I’m gonna be a real happy camper about putting 2 separate squares for them going crooked on my bingo card.

I’ve been trying!!! Unfortunately, it seems like the messages are either double encoded (which I doubt that it actually is) OR my translator is just really bad, so I’m going to try and do it again by hand when I have more time to confirm!!

The only one I can physically decode for certain is the one in the badge data…

Discovery of X-Rays

The discovery of X-rays – a form of invisible radiation that can pass through objects, including human tissue – revolutionised science and medicine in the late 19th century. Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923), a German scientist, discovered X-rays or Röntgen rays in November 1895. He was awarded the first Nobel Prize for Physics for this discovery in 1901.

The thrill of the discovery became caught up in the late Victorian obsession with ghosts and photography. X-rays could 'photograph' the invisible, penetrating flesh, exposing bones and the human skeleton. 'Bone portraits' became popular, and photographers opened studios for a public fascinated by otherworldly images of skeletons.

One of the first medical uses of X-rays occurred in 1896 when John Francis Hall-Edwards (1858-1926), a British doctor, located a needle embedded in a colleague's hand. X-ray technology soon moved from being seen as a new form of photography to a modern diagnostic tool used by hospitals and medical practitioners.

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was a meticulous scientist, but the discovery of X-rays may have been an unintentional result of his work with cathode rays in his Würzburg laboratory in Bavaria, Germany.

Early Years

Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen was born in Lennep, Prussia (Remscheid-Lennep, Germany) on 27 March 1845, to a German textile merchant father and a Dutch mother. He was an only child and spent his early years in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. His father, Friedrich Conrad Röntgen (1801-1884), managed a cloth manufacturing business in Apeldoorn. The family had also moved due to political unrest in Prussia.

Röntgen attended the Utrecht Technical School from 1861 to 1863 but was expelled when a fellow student drew a caricature of a teacher. Röntgen was implicated but refused to name the student responsible. Despite excellent marks, he did not graduate with a technical diploma and could not obtain a degree in the Netherlands. He was accepted by the Mechanical Technical Division of the Federal Polytechnic School in Switzerland in 1865, where he gained a diploma in mechanical engineering and, in 1869, a PhD in physics with his thesis Studies on Gases.

The German experimental physicist August Kundt (1839-1894) was Röntgen's supervisor. In 1866, Kundt designed the Kundt Tube, a glass apparatus that measured the speed of sound in gases. Kundt significantly influenced Röntgen and his research career.

Röntgen followed Kundt to the University of Würzburg in 1870, where he worked as an unpaid assistant during a time of rapid advancements in experimental physics. Scottish mathematician James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was researching electromagnetic radiation and established the connection between light and electromagnetic radiation. Maxwell also took the first colour photograph in 1861, based on his three-colour theory that the human eye sees colour through a combination of blue, red, and green light. Massachusetts-born Samuel Morse (1791-1872) developed the electric telegraph, which transmitted messages over long distances, and Morse code to encode messages, while Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) invented the telephone.

Of particular interest to Röntgen was the work of German physicist Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894) and British chemist William Crookes (1832-1919). Both scientists studied cathode rays – invisible streams of electrons whose behaviour can be observed when an electrical current is passed between the two electrodes (cathode and anode) in a glass vacuum tube. It is called a cathode ray because the electrons are emitted from the cathode (or negative electrode) when an electrical current heats it, and the electron stream glows. Johann Wilhelm Hittorf (1824-1914) was the first to detect cathode rays glowing green in the glass wall of a vacuum tube in 1869 but did not realise that X-rays had been produced during his experiments.

Röntgen became fascinated with the fluorescence caused by cathode rays hitting certain materials, such as salts like barium platinocyanide, which glow a greenish-yellow colour when exposed to cathode rays. It was this fascination that led to the discovery of X-rays.
