Okay there is nothing in this world I love more than the costume design in the outsiders musical but I vehemently DESPISE Sodapop Patrick Curtis wearing his god damn work clothes to a mudfight. I understand him wearing it for certain scenes but not ALL of them, like come on let the man wear a tank top or something

House of the Dragon s2e8

Well, this was a disappointing finale because most of it was FILLER. I'll start with the few bright spots and things I liked.

Alyn finally speaking his mind to Corlys was a great moment. Of course he resents the guy - when Alyn was a child and needed a father, Corlys pretended he didn't exist. He was inconvenient. Now Corlys only acknowledges him because he needs a new heir, not because he genuinely cares for him. Alyn is right for calling out Corlys' bullshit.

Jace confronting the dragonseeds and essentially pulling rank on them was another interesting scene. Jace is at a total disadvantage - he's alone and there are 3 of them, they are older than him and they have larger dragons. The only thing he can use to claim seniority over them is his birth and upbringing as a prince and his mother's heir. I love how he channels Daemon with his behaviour and gestures, his role model for how a prince of a realm should act. His later scene with Baela was so good too, when he sulks while reading and she cheers him up. It really echoes the dynamic between Daemon and Laena in Pentos.

Aemond finally getting back his bad karma - his actions and their consequences hurt his family and now he demands their help fighting the war and they turn their back on him. He burned Aegon himself, removing his best option for a support fighter. He didn't support Alicent, but instead took away her power and alienated her from any allies, so she turns her back on him too. He killed Lucerys, which caused the chain of events leading to Jaehearys' death and Helaena's suffering (and he burned her husband/brother) - she refuses to help him fight as she doesn't owe him anything. He wasn't there for his family, he betrayed them all, so now he's left truly alone. He reaps what he sowed.

The glimpse of Otto in prison was so interesting! I have questions - is he still in King's Landing or somewhere else, did Larys capture him and if not - who did and why. At least we have an explanation why Alicent had no messages from him.

Alright, so the short list of good moments ends here, next some critique. I'll try to be brief.

Whoever came up with Tyland negotiations with mudfights and singing must have been the same genius who was responsible for Aegon humiliating Aemond in a brothel scene from ep 3. It's the same level of stupidity that's supposed to force a few awkward chuckles out of the audience. It also paints the Essosi as complete weirdos and savages. All in all, no one needed this bullshit filler.

The whole Rhaenyra goes to Harrenhal plot point was super contrived and obviously it was done only for the sake of shooting a cool shot of Daemon and the army kneeling before her, logic be damned.

Daemon's dreams in the end are there to make a connection with GOT show. It feels really unnecessary and redundant, so essentially - even more filler to waste time on. I kind of hate how unsubtle this is. They're hitting you with this like a frying pan.

Helaena is now sending visions to Daemon as well and she also drops all subtlety and gives spoilers to Aemond about his future. No more rhyming, no more uncertainty. They're even calling it "your/their story" that's over and done with. It's almost like they're gaining self-awareness that they are characters in a fictional book.

Rhaena still wandering around the mountains without any preparation and searching for a dragon was also another repetitive filler. I started joking that the dragon was running away from her.

Gwayne confronting Criston about his affair with Alicent seems like a scene that should have happened a few episodes ago but somehow it got shuffled to the end of the season.

Alicent sells out her sons to Rhaenyra so she and Helaena can live in peace. Meanwhile, Aegon and Larys escape the city. Does Alicent know about that? Somehow, I doubt that, but if she does, then congratulations on a successful manipulation and saving your own skin from a certain defeat and punishment when Rhaenyra takes the city. Alicent won't even lose Aegon or Aemond as they won't be there. Anyway, I don't care about the show's blind insistence that Rhaenyra and Alicent are some doomed, star-crossed lovers. Why can't they be just well-written enemies? Or just well-written? Idk, all I can say is that I am not invested in them as a ship. I liked them when they were young, but at some point, after all the betrayals and court politics and slander, it just doesn't seem believable that any love could survive that. Now their encounters and pleading to each other just seem contrived and forced. The writers are refusing to let go of that old dynamic between the characters and have a new one that evolved over the years of bitter fighting and animosity.

Last remark - the dialogue was once again kind of awful. Who talks so complicated when they try to argue, in the heat of the moment? Actors were forced to spew the lines that no one would actually say while trying to inject some emotion in them. Criston must have been proud to finally use the word "annihilation" and sound like a learned man and not a son of a lowly steward from Dornish Marches.

Anyway, as I said, a disappointing finale. I'll continue with reading the book.
