I just want to thank you for some body type diversity. It's nice to see bodytypes that are black of multiple sizes celebrated.

An unfortunate trend I've def noticed is the further the skin is from white the more abs and primping and perfection is required.

This is kind of random, but would it have been a struggle for a big busted women to wear fashionable silhouettes in the medieval era? I’ve heard some costume historians discuss that there were forms of bust support, but most of what I’ve seen pre-1500s seems like it would have been a nightmare for any ancestor with a similar bodytype to wear. Am I just from a line of women doomed to horrible back pain? (On the flip side of the situation, I’ve found corsets and stays to be rather comfortable, so that’s not a problem)

As a fellow big boob haver, I have good news for you! There were pretty good Medieval bust supporting garments and I have tested one of them.

With sturdy fabric, tailoring and lacing you can create pretty good bust support. Lacing was popularized first in 12th century in form of bliaut, and in 14th century tailoring became standard for everyday garments. I don't know how well bliaut supported the bust, but since it doesn't fit super snugly, I assume it doesn't distribute the weight of the boobs as well as tailored supporting garments and therefore isn't as supportive. I'm also not actually sure if there was proper bust supporting garments before that, I haven't looked into it. I know Romans bound their breasts with cloth wrapped around the chest, so maybe that technique continued (at least for those who especially needed it) till lacing and tailoring became a thing. For more about how supporting garments developed in Europe through history, I have a post about development of lacing, which coincides pretty well with that history from 12th century forward.

Personally I have experience with Medieval Bathhouse dress, which was used in the Germanic Central-European area roughly in 14th to 16th century. It's called the Bathhouse dress because most depictions of it are from bathhouse settings, but there's depiction also in bed chambers and other contexts, so I think it's pretty safe to assume it was used more generally as an undergarment. It often had separate cups for the boobs (see the only extant garment left of it, the so called "Lengberg Castle Bra"), but not always. Unlike most other undergarments at the time, it was sort of a shift (the lowest layer) and a supporting garment combined into one.

I sewed my own recreation of it (with some alterations because I made it for my everyday use, not as a historical recreation) and did a post about my results, where I go deeper into the history of the garment too. I didn't construct it very well and I did an error in the design of the back, which cause the strain of the shoulder straps to focus too much on very specific spots in the back panel, which eventually made the fabric there break too many times. (There were some other smaller design flaws too, like the waistline is lower than my natural waist so it rose and wrinkled annoyingly.) I did use it daily (except when I washed it) for a fairly long time though and it was super comfortable and helped a lot with back pain (and shoulder pain caused by use of modern bras). I hate that I've had to go back to modern bras because I haven't had the time to remake it yet. (I'll probably make a follow up post once I get around to it, where I go through the issues of the first version and how I addressed them in the next attempt.) Well fitted and shaped bodice which is then laced does surprisingly much even without any additional reinforcements.

I haven't made a Medieval kirtle (though I will some day), but it was the more widely used Medieval supporting garment, which eventually replaced Bathhouse dress in the area where that was used. Kirtle is worn over a shift, but it broadly works similarly. Kirtles could be front, side or back laced depending on the time period and how the Kirtle was constructed. Multiple layers of kirtles could be used and looser overgarments (like houppelande) were often used on top of it. Kirtle was used by everyone, including men, but for those who didn't need bust support, it's purpose was mainly to create the fashionable silhouette. Here's three depictions of kirtles from 15th century. First unlaced, but has lacing on the front, second close up of the side lacing and third shows nicely how both front and side/backlacing shaped the bust.

Morgan Donner is a costumer, who focuses a lot on Medieval costuming and has a big bust, so while I haven't personally tested the supportiveness of kirtle, she certainly has. The kirtle bodice part needs to be patterned to accommodate the breasts by giving it round shapes and the kirtle needs to be a little too small so there's room to lace it to fit well. Lining also helps to reinforce the fabric and make it more firm and supportive. Here's Morgan's pattern from the tutorial in her website and how the kirtle eventually fits for her. (Also look at the handsome boy in his handsome matching outfit.)

She also has a video relating to the same kirtle project, where she explains her method to pattern a kirtle specifically so it's supportive for big bust.

In 16th century more stiffness was added to kirtles, first with very stiff lining and then with boning, but that doesn't necessarily add to the bust support, rather it just allows the kirtle to shape the bust and the body in general more and better support a heavy skirt. Firm fabric secured snugly with lacing is already very good at distributing the weight of the boobs to the whole torso.

In conclusion, at least since 14th century people with our body type were not doomed to eternal back pain and even before that some ways to help with it were probably used.

But yeah! I adore the genemod. Not only does it mean I don't have to manage the genetically accurate family trees on my own but I really adore the extra mutations and health conditions. I don't usually play with modded litters since I don't like clogging up my notes with dead kittens but I LOVE the fact that you can have multiple sires and that all outsider litters generate a second parent (aside from half clan although i wish they did). I also really like that it gives every cat a bodytype and an exact height. My next clangen project is definitely going to have a height chart.

It's honestly only my love of RisingClan and my desire to finish a project for once in my life that are keeping me from starting over with this new Clan I've been working on. I basically only play Genemod now because it's just so much more fun for me.

So, this scene is coming from a mod I'll link to in a reply (because I still think that posts don't appear in tags if links are in them that go off the site?), I feel like I should start off with.

Most of those lines we all have seen a dozen times before, I'm sure, but I still felt the need to share this. Because I can never get enough of him there's things in here that I absolutely loved getting.

Just, as a list I guess, because I don't think I can make a long text about it.

I do like that this has been set to be taking place close to graves - a nice nod to later. Also just kinda nice to have a scene happen outside of camp for a change (although it did teleport me away from where I was before the scene, like afterwards I had to waypoint back to the gauntlet of shar)

"I've been wearing my heart on my sleeve for a while" is not really Ari, but, that's okay.

The kiss actually mostly lining up there, because the mod has been made for bt1 in mind and thus adjusted the heights or something (read it on the mod, idk how else to explain). I just, I wish in the kisses mod the kisses would line up similarly, too. I assume that's not easy bc there's different bodytypes and everything and it's probably not like you can easily adjust that to automatically match or whatever, but, oh it was really nice to see the kiss lined up better than when I replay it through the kisses mod.

I absolutely love those last two lines there. I think I've seen videos of the "loving and adoring" one before but never got it myself? Or maybe I did and I'm just not sure right now, idk, but point is, I don't know how I'd even get that line in the default game, and I love hearing that and it fits so well into the scene especially after those multiple kisses, and just, thank you modder for adding that. And of course, the "a lot of fun together", is so nice to say because it's kinda mirroring the end scene (where I think this line is taken from in the first place, but, that's not the point), and I absolutely feel like it would have made 100% sense to have a line like that in the default scenes of it too. Idk.

But yes, I really liked seeing this modded scene - I'm curious about the flower and would love to, when using this mod, have it as like hairpiece or something to have my char wear afterwards or sth, but that as a sidenote - although I don't think I'll keep it as like, a regular or permanent mod to use. For now there's another mod for these scenes of his that I'll try in the next run (or more like the restart of this one bc I'll be able to have Ari as shadow sorc once I do the update I'm kinda trying to subconsciously postpone or sth), and after that, well, we'll see if I'll say I wanna go default or keep one of the two mods in "permanently".

Also, just, it's so amazing what modders can achieve. I'm so impressed.

Where the hell are people getting the idea Shane is fat? Don't get me wrong, I love the headcanon, but his sprites along with his backstory show he's not fat. Stocky, sure. Short, yes. But he isn't fat.

Shane used to be a gridball player. If we're comparing it to US football, relative to a player of his height, he'd more likely have a bodytype similar to characteres like Jacob from AC Syndicate. Stocky, but muscled, even with the alcoholism. He works at Joja, and he works on a ranch with A LOT OF LARGE ANIMALS. Even with the booze, he wouldn't suddenly pack on the amount of fat the players think he would.

I know fat. I AM fat. Shane isn't fat. At most, he's just a little bigger than average. There's a difference between slightly bigger and FAT.

And I KNOW this fandom understands the difference between slightly bigger and fat. I've seen multiple mods that "fix" the sprites and one of the most common thing those modders do is barely trim off a few pixels for Shane and then COMPLETELY REDO CLINT FROM THE TOP DOWN. Making him nearly the same size as all the rest of the bachelors.

Once again, Stardew Valley fanbase showing its fatphobia.

cassie! she runs the gamut on ages but i have a storyline in mind from birth to ~30. shes a lone wanderer and weird about it. terrible relationship with her father. shes Black, transfeminine and bisexual which had predictable effects on growing up in vault mccarthyist hell. she spent long periods of time completely alone in the maintenance tunnels, training with homemade swords and studying various manuals. shes well meaning, suspicious of most people, competent and deeply, deeply uncomfortable with interpersonal communication. charon is her favoured companion and sarah lyons was her good friend after they stopped yelling at each other. she did not take sarahs death well.

cassiopeia is a confusing woman. she was born to half-chinese half-white american parents (they were both biracial.) in an internment camp. her father was executed in a propaganda news broadcast before she was born and she was taken from her mother as an infant and adopted out to a white military family. they set her up with the man who would become her husband and she went along with them, him and the relationship as a whole mainly out of fear of being sent to another camp. or even the same camp. however when she found out she was pregnant it kind of snapped her like "this? this? this forever?" and she tried to abort it. her husband found out and threatened to report her which would have been an attempted murder charge and probably internment. she threatened to kill herself with one of his guns and he had her commited to a psychiatric hospital until after shed given birth. by the time she was released she was fully planning a family annihilation on Halloween night by drugging him and setting the whole fucking house on fire so in a way nuclear apocalypse was kind of an improvement for her. she did the minutemen storyline up until the castle and then commited Hard to the railroad. deacon is like her weird brother. cait is her longest term relationship and theyre functionally married. she is bisexual, 5'5 and thick as fuck. fairly likable but not that easygoing she can be intense in a way that scares people. and if they ask her about prewar life she Will tell them in detail.

love (L0V3) or v. 23 year old nomad. shes very techy and likes coding/building/writing things more than she likes thieving but she has done a lot of thieving largely for goofs and giggles. shes had a difficult life and it shows in her physique; shes taller than average but underweight and gawky. not very graceful or naturally charismatic, but she does enjoy talking to and meeting new people they just dont usually enjoy meeting her. her weapon of choice is a lightweight pistol. she pretty much lives in a variation of ratty denim shorts, t-shirt and a flannel. she constantly carries an old as fuck, beat to hell backpack with her Everywhere and shes carrying So Much in there shes got water and snacks and extra socks and underwear and bandages and a deck and another gun and hair ties and tampons. So Much. she is a fundamentally easygoing, fairly lighthearted person with a kind disposition and a tendency to silliness but her life is wearing on her. the fall of her clan was a significant crack. jackie adopting her made her dependent on him. then he died. now shes dying too. shes getting meaner, more aggressive. she doesnt romance anyone.

serena. 17 years old. serena was born in the fantasy world equivalent of the french west indies in a town a bit further down the coast from one of the main shipping ports. she was given up to a community home by her extremely young mother as a baby. pretty good childhood they took good care of her. then when she was around 9 the major pantheon that governed her world decided to reform the supercontinent. the resulting coastal destruction obliterated her home and community. she (and her adoptive brother) were some of the very, very few survivors and they really only made it cus hes got some stuff going on. shes a noble, somewhat naive, deeply spoiled sweetie pea whos dedicated her life to righting the injustices of the pantheon. this has made her homeless, destitute, a wanted criminal, extremely injured on many occasions and also an extremely competent swordswoman. her sword is magic and it transforms between a big cutlass and a ring and it should be named but i havent named it. she also has a matching shield with the same deal. shes very close with her brother since he basically raised her and he absolutely spoils her way too much. hes still doing her hair. shes wearing it in microbraids.

luke. 19. serenas big brother. hes got some stuff going on. his mother is a wizard with aspirations of divinity and she made him as a powerful, massive and self-aware homunculous. hes only kind of aware of this since shes also a deadbeat mom who dumped him in a random village as a baby when she realised what shed done. shes been by to visit him a couple of times and see if hes been fomenting insurrection against her or anything and mostly what he did during those occasions was yell at her. he also looks like her (pale, skinny, east asian features) which made him stand out a lot in the village. he can manipulate his appearance up to a point since he is kind of clay-based and consumes raw blood for nutrience. hes 2 years older than serena and is deeply protective of her. he does a lot of the cooking and cleaning and basic upkeep in their day to day lives. his weapon is a magic staff that cannot change size but can transform between a staff and a sanjiegun. he got it from his mom and is mad about it. mostly lazy by nature

markus. 18. markus is an aspiring wizard and former assassin-in-training. his family business was a long line of shadowy mercenaries who trained specifically in dissolving their corporeal form into a smoky black liquid that resembled a shadow. he can do that and is pretty good at it but it makes him feel physically very ill to do. so he doesnt like it. he tried to run away from his family a few times and kept getting caught, until he was 14 and tried to rob serena and lukes camp. serenas magic shield blocked his shadow form and luke hit him over the head with his staff. everyone cried at least once during and after. he decided to stay with them since they were clearly pretty strong and he thought maybe they could protect him from his family. he was right. hes also trans and has kind of a gay thing with luke but they also both have other shit going on. least sociable but most educated. large vocabulary. he has mixed feelings on serenas goals but its so far been a positive addition to his goals of being a wizard who invents a new magical language

tldr: multiple angle references and trying to understand how muscle groups work from like. a 3d perspective.

if i look up refs for a specific pose i usually try to look up n study references of the pose in multiple angles (and sometimes how it connects underneath the skin) to kind of try to understand it, then attempt to recreate it on my own once i've gotten a semi-decent mental image of it! like that apple rotating in your brain exercise but with body parts

i feel like having a good understanding of how something works in a 3d space helps a lot, so i use a wombo combo of pose images / medical diagrams / anatomy books dedicated for sculptors (latter one helps a lot imo) for like...studying anatomy. you could also like get a full length mirror and just...try out poses yourself to see how skin folds, etc. would work. might limit you to certain bodytypes (specifically your own) though, but you can still apply it to diff bodytypes with enough bullshitting 🤷

...i also bullshit things pretty often though. if it looks visually OK to you (imo no need for perfection, you can always improve over time) then so be it! but i also go back a lot over my prev. drawings and try to see where and what could be improved esp. anatomy-wise.
