Museumskwartier Amsterdam

V Amsterdamu jsme byli ve dvou muzeích, dokonce si troufnu říct, že v těch hlavních. Plánovali jsme ještě další dvě, ale to už jsmě nestihli - takže se tam aspoň musíme vrátit.

Na druhý den jsme měli zarezervované lístky do Van Gogh Musea, což je částečně prosklená moderní třípatrová budova. Lístky jsme naštěstí měli koupené už na dopoledne, ale i tak tam bylo hodně lidí.

Výstava je rozdělená do tří pater podle tematických okruhů - první patro tvoří hlavně autoportréty a Van Goghova krátká biografie. Kromě toho tam byla ve vitríně ale i jeho paleta a barvy, které používal. V druhém patře je pak vše, co ho nějakým způsobem ovlivnilo v tvorbě - od malířů po scény ze života na venkově - začátky života a moderního umění v Paříži, obrazy jeho přátel a malby inspirované japonským uměním. Další patro je věnováno především dopisům, rodinným vazbám a její historii. Dopisy tam byly nejen naskenované, ale i namluvené, takže bylo možné si je poslechnout celé. Kromě toho bylo vidět, že své obrazy do dopisů i skicoval, nebo popisoval. Toto patro bylo věnované i přátelstvím, kromě Goghových obrazů svých přátel tam byly například i obrazy od Gauguina, nejvíc se mi líbil portrét Van Gogha malujícího slunečnice. Protože muzeum nemá kapacitu vystavit všechna díla, nebo jsou tak křehká, že by dlouhodobé setrvání na světle nezvládly, je spousta médií naskenovaných - např. skicáře a notesy. Muzeum bylo hodně interaktivní, což se mi líbilo - v jedné místnosti bylo možné prohlédnout si dva obrazy pod mikroskopem a vidět tak silnou vrstvu barvy, ale i písek, který se mu na paletu dostal, když maloval na pláži. Poslední patro se už zabývá jeho nemocí a posledními měsíci života a jeho snahou malovat za každou cenu.

Další den jsme se vydali do Rijksmusea, největšího muzea v Holandsku, kde jsem si připadala jako Alenka v Říši divů, nebo dítě v hračkářství. Tento rok je pro muzeum obzvlášť významný, protože uplynulo 350 let od smrti jednoho z nejlepších malířu západu, Rembrandta. A tak bylo poprvé (a možná naposled) vystaveno 22 obrazů (Noční hlídka ale zůstala v Gallery of Honour), 60 kreseb a více než 300 leptů. 

Rijksmuseum je jinak rozděleno podle pater a časových období, v nejvyšším patře je moderní umění. Priorita pro nás byla výstava All the Rembrandts, která byla rozdělena podle témat a období, což mi připadá jako nejlepší rozložení děl na každé výstavě. Bylo vidět, jak se Rembrandt učil a zdokonaloval, nejzajímavější byly asi jeho autoportréty na kterých si trénoval vyobrazení různých emocí, a nebo hodně tmavé lepty s malým zdrojem světla. Pak už jsme si prohlíželi jen to, co nás lákalo a oslovilo, samozřejmě všechny obrazy v Gallery of Honour - třeba Vermeera a nebo právě Noční hlídku. Kromě obrazů (třeba i mého oblíbeného Liotarda nebo dvou autoportrétů Gogha) byly v muzeu také i modely lodí, nebo domečky pro panenky ze 17. století, což pro mě byl velký zážitek. Dále také ale delftský porcelán, nebo dobové oblečení, šperky, hudební nástroje - takový kabinet kuriozit. Zážitek to byl velký, asi i na celý život a doufám, že se tam ještě budu moct vrátit. Protože takové muzeum rozhodně není na jednu návštěvu.

Co mě ale moc potěšilo po příjezdu bylo zjištění, že sbírky obou muzeí si člověk může prohlédnout i online, a o každém obrazu si něco přečíst.

“Young painter, surely you want to be a great artist? Do! For otherwise it is simply not worth it to paint and it would be better for you to dedicate your efforts to another occupation useful to mankind.

Remember then these things:

You must turn all your might, all your interest and love to your art only and to the reaching of you goal. All else you must subordinate to it, first and last, what you think of must be a painting and only that. If your calling is in art, you will know that all the incidents of your life, good and bad, lead only to you dedicating yourself entirely to it. When everything abandons you and disappoints, only love will be left, love of art, which makes life beautiful and is the only thing for which it is possible to regret that we are to die one day.

To create, to paint is a passion. The mightiest and invincible passion which, though all desires have gone dim within you, must not cease. You may renounce anything, resign in anything, but never in art. Nothing can be strong enough to hold you back, no obstacle great enough for you not to pass it. Beware of excessive doubt about yourself. Lack of confidence is your greatest enemy, striking your brush out of your hand. You must strive towards the highest peaks, ask to make possible that which is not, and never stop dreaming of it. Believe firmly that you can do it. Faith is that winged horse without which we may not reach the great heights.

But beware also of overestimating yourself. Excessive doubt and excessive confidence is a double-edged ax. Be careful and judge your work soberly. In case of doubt, compare and ask all works of art of the present and the past. If you find undisputed qualities to your work rejoice heartily and if you do not yet know that which you would like to know, allow that which is good in your work to strenghten your hope, that which is lacking to kindle your courage, and allow your desire and your efforts to double.

When you know so much that you may dare create something of your own do not look back and do not let yourself be disconcerted by the fact that others paint differently. That which you like about yourself and others is what you need and what you are looking for. Do not let yourself be dazed by slogans of modernity, follow only your conception and do not fret, should the result be seemingly unmodern. If you create, you are necessarily modern. Do not be afraid of being exceptional, lonely amid the surrounding work. Those who create schools are frail, they have succumbed to the creator who was also once solitary and exceptional. Have faith and be faithful only to yourself.

From what do you create your art? From your life, for you may not know anything else, and you do not have anything else. From your love and fortune, from your pain and suffering you shall create art, making word into flesh.

I presume that you have a talent, this ability to turn things in three dimensions onto a two-dimensional surface, without them losing their truthfulness and reality. Among those who paint there are many of those who are talented, but how many of them are good painters and how many of them are great? The greatness and ferocity of talent alone may make you a good painter, but not a great artist. Talent is a precondition, but not a guarantee of grandeur.

Wherein does then lie the grandeur, the secret of the genius? Not only in the talent in itself but also in the might which is carnal, in greatness and force of his feelings, desires and wanting, in his greatness which is moral. The greatness of a person as a human being is a condition for his greatness as an artist. Only if you are a great human, you may also be a great artist.”

[…] Czech Easter traditions include making elaborately decorated eggs, called kraslice.  Kraslice can be batik dyed, painted, carved, or decorated with straw or wire.  You can see more about how they are made here and here.  I didn’t get good photos of the kraslice displayed at the museum, but you can see beautifully decorated kraslice here and here

The doodles are super cute and I love them! But the outfit actually is an ensemble to be worn on St. Lucy’s day over in the Czech republic that appears to have been (in 2014? at least) on exhibit at the Musaion. More info here.

UJ Arts & Culture announce their #METAMORPHOSIS

#METAMORPHOSIS is UJ Arts & Culture’s 2018 programme of change.

“Looking at our creative programme through this thematic lens is the ideal stimulus for alignment with the University’s drive to participate meaningfully in decolonisation and transformation,” says Pieter Jacobs, Head of Arts & Culture (a division of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture) at the University of Johannesburg.

Drawing inspiration from the theme of #METAMORPHOSIS has seen UJ Arts & Culture plan to change more than its content. The 2018 programme features two brand new festivals as well as new partnerships that will increase opportunities for the university community, creative industries and the public to experience and participate in the arts. The programme is diverse, ranging from jazz, poetry and youth arts festivals to a music concert series, stand-up comedy shows, drama and dance seasons and an exhibitions programme.

“It is a great responsibility to play a role in shaping leaders of the future. And what better tool than the arts to develop the emotional and cultural intelligence to harness the knowledge and skills we acquire as we go through life,” says Jacobs.

To this end, UJ Arts & Culture offers students and staff a robust programme to participate in the arts. Through the UJ Arts Academy, students, alumni and staff have access to a range of free dance and acting classes, poetry and drumming sessions or they could audition for theatre productions, the UJ Choir, UniJoh Chorale, jazz band, wind band or orchestra. Its student offering would not be complete without the hugely popular student talent competition presented annually and group tours to festivals and celebrations.

A key component of UJ Arts & Culture’s activities is its annual interdisciplinary collaborative FADA programme, launched in 2017 by the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Federico Freschi. Once again, this programme will see more than 300 students from departments across the faculty get involved in different design aspects of a UJ Arts & Culture-produced play as part of their course work.

“UJ Arts & Culture’s #METAMORPHOSIS programme is designed to advance the University’s vision of an international institution of choice, anchored in Africa, dynamically shaping the future. Bolstered by PhD residencies, local and international performing arts residencies, lectures, workshops and conferences, the Division strives to offer world-class opportunities to experience, participate in, and for empowerment through the arts,” concludes Jacobs.

#METAMORPHOSIS promises to appeal to art lovers with diverse interests:

VISUAL ART

Exhibitions Programme

For the fourth year in a row UJ Arts & Culture’s exhibitions programme will feature the PPC Imaginarium Awards. These awards, established by PPC Ltd, offer emerging designers and artists a platform to showcase their talent and creativity through the use of cement as a primary medium.

In May, the 300 Art Ornaments exhibition will showcase over 250 pieces collected by the UJ Jewellery Design and Manufacture Department over the past 10 years.

UJ Art Gallery in partnership with the Bag Factory will play host to Brazillian curator Daniella Géo, who delves into the Bag Factory’s alumni archives. TRANS will showcase the impact Bag Factory’s alumni have had on the art scene and the role it played in connecting the Johannesburg with the rest of Africa and the world.

UJ Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the MTN Foundation SA, presents Continuing Conversations, following the 2017 collaborative Shifting Conversations exhibition. The conversations continue in 2018, with works derived from both the MTN and UJ art collections as well as emerging artists with an addition of a mentorship and educational programme.

The 2018 UJ Arts Gallery calendar is set to close on a high with the celebration of 21 Years of The Ampersand Foundation, which rewards excellence in the visual arts by granting fellowships to young professional South African contemporary visual artists. Curator Gordon Froud brings works completed by such fellows together in this exhibition.

MUSIC

UJ Concert Series

Kicking off the UJ Concert Series is the re-launch of the University’s Steinway Concert Grand with Steinway artists Christopher Duigan, Charl du Plessis and Jill Richards featuring the rising star, Sulayman Human, in concert.

Presented in partnership with Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, Swiss group Hildegard Lernt Fliegen (Hildegard Learns to Fly) is a Swiss formation of avant-garde jazz, headlined by singer Andreas Schaerer. In 2014, the band received the BMW Welt Jazz Award, and subsequently toured Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Luxembourg, China, Italy, Finland, UK and France.

The programme will culminate in FADA’s major fundraising drive in support of the Dean’s Bursary Fund. Presented annually on the first Saturday of November, A Grand Night for Singing will feature familiar and new voices, the UJ Choir and the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra.

UJ Choir

In addition to performing at more than 20 graduation ceremonies and special events, the UJ Choir will perform alongside Hope College (USA) at the Rosebank Catholic Church and with Akustika Chamber Singers at SABC’s M1 Studio in May. The highlight for UJ Choir’s 2018 calendar includes, competing in the much-anticipated World Choir Games in early July.

UJ Choir, Tuks Camerata, and Puk-Koor will be performing in Koorkaleidoscope at the University of Pretoria’s Musaion in August. UJ Choir’s annual programme wraps up with its customary end year Celebration Concert at the end of October.

FESTIVALS

UJ Weekend of Jazz

Presented in celebration of Africa Day, the inaugural UJ Weekend of Jazz, is scheduled to take place at the UJ Art Centre from 24-26 May. This urban jazz experience, is set to cast a spotlight on exceptionally skilled emerging jazz musicians who are not afraid to experiment or disrupt the notion of jazz.

National Arts Festival

Keeping up the tradition, UJ Arts & Culture will present a substantive programme at the National Arts Festival with the translation of Reza de Wet’s iconic African Gothic (translation of Diepe Grond) headlining the UJ programme, which includes Choir Boy by Tarell Alvin McCraney, a music concert and STAGED, a new play development showcase.

UJ Youth Arts Festival

The new festival will cast a spotlight on some of the best new creative voices with students from other institutions, colleges and youth groups joining UJ Arts & Culture students in a showcase of acting, singing, dancing and making music. The festival will be hosted at the UJ Art Centre as well as at the Con Cowan Theatre in August.

Izimbongi Poetry Festival

UJ Arts & Culture’s grand finale after a year-long slam poetry programme with students, school learners and the public will take shape in the form of a week-long poetry festival featuring performances by professional and amateur spoken word artists, book launches, lectures, forum discussions and workshops.

THEATRE

Out the Box Comedy

Back by popular demand, UJ Arts & Culture will again team up with POPArt and Goliath & Goliath to present the Out the Box Comedy shows, culminating in a marathon of 20 comedians performing 5-minute sets each.

Choir Boy

Comprising a combination of student and professional actors, the play tells the story of a young man who wants nothing more than to take his rightful place as leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. Can he find his way inside the hallowed halls of this institution if he sings in his own key? After its premiere at the National Arts Festival, Choir Boy will be performed at the UJ Youth Arts Festival in August.

African Gothic

Set against the backdrop of a farm in desolate ruin, Reza de Wet’s, African Gothic (translation of Diepe Grond), tells the story of the complicated, passionate, and troubled relationship between two siblings. Presented in partnership with Joburg Theatres, the play will be presented at The Fringe following its run at the National Arts Festival in July.

Metamorphosis

As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. The staging of the play will be the culmination of a year-long process that involves more than 300 students and lecturers from different departments in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA) working on various design and development aspects of the work as part of their course work. Kafka’s Metamorphosis, adapted by Steven Berkoff will be tested in October with a view of undertaking full runs in 2019.

DANCE

MIDM’s 40th Anniversary Celebration Season proudly hosted by UJ Arts & Culture at the UJ Art Centre will comprise two programmes – the first will run from 14 to 16 September 2018 and the second in the following week from 20 to 22 September 2018.

SWAN, inspired by the famous ballet, Swan Lake, and the Japanese social phenomenon Hikikomori, the dance piece was built by Hannah Ma and Kesuke Mihara on Tchaikovsky’s music. SWAN will perform at the Con Cowan Theatre from 21 to 23 September 2018.

Dubnové  barevné dny

Duben je jeden z mých nejoblíbenějších měsíců, protože se všechno začíná zelenat a ke konci už kvetou šeříky, pod oknem vykvétá wistarie a objevují se poupátka na rododendronu. Svítí slunce, je modré nebe a voní vzduch. Konec dubna nás odměnil krásným počasím, na svoje narozeniny jsem v osm ráno vyšla na pavlač a bylo krásně teplo, a večer, když jsem se po desátý vracela do bytu jsem šla v šatech a nebyla mi zima. A to miluju.

Někdy v půlce dubna jsem se taky dozvěděla, že jsem se dostala na erasmus do Barcelony a došlo mi, že nikdy nic nevyjde tak, jak si to člověk naplánuje, a občas to vyjde i líp, než člověk doufá.

Přečteno:

Duben byl měsícem čtenářských zklamání (až na jednu knihu, kterou jsem ale četla znovu), měsícem čtenářských přešlapů. Možná to bylo způsobeno nenaplněnými očekáváními, nebo jen špatným načasováním čtení konkrétních knih. Proto jsem taky nenapsala skoro žádný reviews na goodreads, protože nerada šířím negativní subjektivní názory, a zvlášť pak na knihy. Duben jsem začala knihou The Lonely City, o osamělosti. Autorka v ní rozebírá osamělost a samotu jako emoci a stav a ilustruje to příklady umělců, kteří tento pocit vtiskli do své práce, mimo jiné Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol nebo třeba Henry Darger. Objektivně to je určitě zajímavá kniha, mně ale nesedla. Další byla Hemingwayova Fiesta, která mě vůbec nebavila, málem jsem jí odložila. Neustále se opakující bezpředmětné dialogy vedoucí nikam a minimum děje, což není nic pro mě. Na tom jsem se ale naštěstí shodla i s taťkou. Před cestou do Amsterdamu pro mě byla jasná volba kniha Miniaturista, kterou jsem četla už před několika lety. Odehrává se právě v Amsterdamu 17. století a vypráví (přikresleně) příběh Petronelly Oortmanové a zmiňuje její, dnes už slavný, domeček pro panenky, který je mimo jiné vystavený v Rijskmuseu. To pro mě bylo hodně zajímavé, protože jsem naživo viděla ulice, které byly popsány v knize a hezky to doplnilo náš pobyt. Poslední utrpení bylo Putování jednoho slona portugalského nositele Nobelovy ceny Saramaga. Ten vypráví příběh slona, který musel ujít cestu z Lisabonu až do Vídně - námět to je určitě zajímavý, každopádně se mi absolutně nelíbil styl kterým byla kniha napsána. Na konec ale přišla záchrana, Tracyho tygr kterého jsem dostala od N. k narozeninám a který se mi moc líbil, protože mě zaujalo jak se může postava tygra měnit závisle na čtenáři a na době, kdy člověk knihu čte. Jako poslední jsem dočetla Van Gogha, ve kterém jsem si listovala celý duben.

Jóga a běh:

O dubnu jsem si myslela, že to bude měsíc kdy naběhám nejvíce kilometrů, bohužel tomu tak nebylo. První týden jsem onemocněla a pak jsem se vždy ve stadiu, kdy už se mi začalo běhat dobře, nějakým způsobem zranila a musela si dát pauzu. To pro mě bylo velké zklamání, protože je už konečně venku krásně a zárověň bych moc rádaa běhala ještě víc. Život má ale většinou jiné plány a možná se mi jen tělo snažilo říct, že bych si měla dát trochu pohov. Běhací pauzy povětšinou znamenaly i jógové pauzy. Co jsem si ale vyzkoušela, byla létací jóga na workshopu mojí kamarádky E. Bylo to zajímavý, musela jsem překonat sama sebe a svůj strach, věřit sobě a síti. To vedlo k tomu, že jsem se častokrát dostala do pozic, které by moje tělo ještě nezvládlo a to se mi líbilo.

Poslouchám:

Protože pořád pracuju na bakalářce, vede u mě můj lo-fi playlist a playlist Días coloridos, když už něco poslouchám, tak výlučně ten. Na začátku měsíce také vyšla epizoda podcastu ReWilding s autorkou knihy Sober Curious, Ruby Warrington o alkoholu, střízlivosti a tzv. “sober curiousity”. Ke konci měsíce jsem ještě objevila dvě písničky od X Ambassadors, BOOM a Hey Child.

Amsterdam:

Trochu o Amsterdamu jsem si napsala sem a o muzeích sem, každopádně mě neuvěřitelně překvapil a nabil mě pozitivní energií. Měli jsme krásné počasí, všichni jezdili na kolech, smáli se, na každém růžku byla nějaká kavárnička, nebo bistro se španělskými tapas a ústřicemi. Z dětsví jsem si toho moc nepamatovala, i Van Gogh Museum bylo v mých představách úplně jiné. Amsterdam ale na mě působil jako velice otevřené místo, možná to bylo tím, jak byli všichni pořád venku - v parcích, na kole, na loďkách. Obyvatelům domů bylo vidět okny do obývacích pokojů, nebo otevřenými dveřmi do kuchyní. 

Brain food:

Duben se nesl ve znamení psaní bakalářky, která mě někdy bavila a někdy vůbec, každopádně jsem svědomitě každý den psala. Hned na začátku dubna jsem zašla do Veletržního paláce na výstavu 400 ASA, která mě na Grand Opening moc nezaujala, každopádně na doporučení A. jsem si prohlédla knížky, co jsou k dispozici, a ty se mi líbily moc. A pak jsem si Veletržák prošla celý - nejvíc mě fascinuje asi Studio Sekal, což je studio českého sochaře, které vcelku přenesli do NG - součástí jsou i deníkové zápisky, takže jsem tam vydržela pěkně dlouho. I když Sekala jako sochaře neznám, jeho myšlenky byly určitě zajímavý. V přízemí se mi poštěstila neuvěřutelná věc, a to, prohlížet si Skálův Musaion divností o samotě, z čehož jsem měla neuvěřitelnou radost. V Amsterdamu mě neuvěřitelně fascinovalo Van Gogh Museum a stejně, nebo možná ještě víc obrovský Rijksmuseum.

Bonus: Fuck-up

Ze zenového příběhu z Nové země od Tolleho jsem si odnesla větu “I toto pomine”, kterou si neustále opakuju. A i během toho, kdy jsem se vezla na vlně euforie z přijetí na erasmus. Asi za týden jsem se dozvěděla, že výchozí text bakalářky, který jsem už měla celý přeložený a po korektuře, není akceptovatelný a musím si vybrat jiný. Dřív bych byla asi hodně reaktivní, vyletěla bych a vinila bych všechny okolo. Ale byla to i moje chyba a co jiného jsem mohla dělat, než najít si jiný text a začít překládat znovu?

Nejlepší:

Duben byl (až na to čtení a běh) celý moc hezký, konečně začalo jaro. Byly jsme s holkama na Velký Americe, několik odpolední jsem strávila na Jiřáku (včetně toho narozeninovýho), před Amsterdamem se mi líbilo v Kněževsi, Amsterdam mě nabil a inspiroval. Na svoje narozeniny jsem byla spokojená a na narozeninovou oslavu doma jsem připravila hromadu tapas, což byl můj sen.
