librarians redesigned!!! by me!!! :)

the designs are free to use, i used this as a character design exercise for myself while recovering from carpal tunnel issues! read more for all the individual designs + me ranting :*

first off roland!! i included an angelica in here, i designed her before him, shes very triangular to me.. maybe a bit more messed up than roland tells us about, he is a biased narrator afterall. anyways i wanted his design to match hers nicely, so hes like a rounded square type of guy... i think projmoon designed him to be Just A Guy intentionally, so i played into it. overall the least interesting design of the bunch imo. its on purpose :)

angela !!! my baby :) an important thing here is her bangs. i dont want her hair to be able to recover from however many years she spent with the hard middle part in lobcorp, i think its cute to incorporate it still. swoopy, fluffy hair for her! and the clothes are just a bit more casual idk the librarian uniforms were kinda boring and stiff to me, as much as it does go with her character.. if u wanna be human u gotta experience the joy of sweatpants or whatever. also i didnt add color but i dont want her to be fully white<3 or fully clear skinned.. give her sunspots on her face. she finally gets to experience sun. :)

guess ill go in order of appearance lol. malkuth! whats the headband for if it doesnt keep anything out of her face!! since shes a bit more active than some of her colleagues, i also gave her a ponytail(its also for the silhouette...) also gave her some chubbier thighs.. also maybe a butler-esque coat, at least to me; i just made it a bit more form fitting than the original. playing into her personality or whatever. shes cute.. remember to take deep breaths!!

yesod!! i want to play into the skin issues a bit more, i still removed his gloves but i gave him a poncho, not just for the square silhouette im trying to build but for more coverage. also emo hair over eyes was funny. also wide flare pants for you, boy. just very square and put together in general

hod! this ones my favorite (i even cared enough to give her a pattern on that skirt!!) it was kinda bugging me how in the artbook i couldnt tell who was writing because hod's, malkuth's, and tiphereth's colors are so similar. so hod is pink now, and malkuth a bit more orange. i kinda went for a romantic poet thing here, dunno how much that worked out, but i think out of everyone you can tell shes the literature girl. gave her pigtails !! theyre cute :> also since i removed the coat decoration off of angela, i gave part of it to hod in the bottom of her coat :). cute and round!

netzach is a very strange man to me.. ellipse shape and loose fitting clothes for u. if i saw him irl i wouldnt approach him. not to say i dont like him as a character, i love him, but i want him to look like a depressed guy who would pick up art as a hobby to distract himself and it works. bro is just surviving out there. also gave him comfy clothes to make the surviving easier, down to the shoes and wide, id assume non-denim pants - maybe cotton? maybe sweatpants that dont fit around the ankle? who knows.

tiphereth!! since she's like the teen girl of the group i gave her a skater dress, converse, and a tied coat around her waist.. like how i used to wear as a teen when i was being a hater and recovering from a death in the family that changed my entire life (im still a teen ... 9 more days till im 20 as of posting this). also gave her fishnets i think she would like that. i imagine she would get headaches bc of those dumb braids on her head<3 or maybe bc her coworkers are kinda dumb<3

gebura :) round face, reverse triangle shaped body.. like a true butch lesbian stereotype.. i decided a leather jacket, docs and pants i see metalheads wear would fit her! red leather jacket, of course. also gave her spiky hair just like projmoon did<3 my favorite detail here are the eyebrows, i think their shape is rlly neat! nvm i think its just that gebura is rlly neat. anyways the eyebrows fit her

chesed my boy.. idk i just saw him and hit him with the transmasc beam and gave him , as the kids say, wh0re eyes. i wanted him to have rounder hips and just be round in general. turtleneck and cardigan combo also, i think he would like wearing that. also somewhat curlier hair, or at least wavy would do him well! and a tote bag, i dont doubt that he would go out to read in coffee shops if he could - so he gets a tote bag to carry his sociology books. i want him to look like he would give the warmest, comfiest hugs and be friend shaped

binah!! this one was the most challenging, trying to find the right place for the colors - to not use too little or too much yellow. i still dont think i got it right but this is as close as im getting. long face, long nose, siren-ish eyes.. messed up in the head bird lady that speaks like hannibal! i also dont think a dress really suits her so i opted for wide pants and a fancy black button up .. maybe angela styled her, who knows. also black fingertips which is a trait i like to give the arbiters (including an oc).. just my own little consistency thing i like to do :)

hi grandpa! ok for hokma i dont think the changes are that big? i gave him O shaped legs and his sword thing i turned into a walking cane, gave him a vest (didnt want to opt for a corset but i think he would enjoy the back support for proper posture) . also gave him a mild gradient from darker gray to lighter gray, since he IS the gray part of the ABC trio. gave him salt and pepper hair and an older face. forgot to draw it, but i wanted to give him a silicone tip for the sword so it doesnt dull out, which he can take off when recieving guests

honorary mention to go along with the angelica i mentioned with roland, i mildly changed up her twin(k) brother. i gave argalia and angie the same hair but mirrored, his a bit more curly and hers a bit more spikey, his face a bit more edgy, hers a bit rounder and kinder. not much else to say here, i liked his design as is, but wanted to add him here :)

Hod: Oh, uh, I brought On Writing by Stephen King. I think it'll really help me with my own writing. Netzach: i brought no longer human by osamu dazai. it was pretty good. Angela: Netzach, that's fiction. Netzach: couldn't find anything else interesting. Tiphereth: I brought What If? by Randall Munroe. It's cool to see those weird questions answered scientifically. okayyy fuck it its time to limbus company theorypost on main im freeing myself from my anonymous mask. exactly one person will know what i mean by that. anyways

so. sapling of light huh. dante getting powers based off the sephirot. very cool and normal and in no way has huge lore implications.

so number 1 thing here is that the powers are based off the sephirot meltdowns. pigritia was slowing down time like hokma’s meltdown and superbia makes ego easier to use like binah’s meltdown reward, so for now im sticking to this pattern until i am proven wrong.

number two: the names are latin words for sins, and they are also sins that are affiliated with the sephirot (hokma wanted to stay in the loop forever, thus sloth/pigritia. binah has immense amounts of pride as an arbiter, thus superbia)

so based off these two things, have these predictions for the rest of the tree:

Chesed-Morosita (Gloom)-Change all resistances to “Endured/Ineffective” for a turn or change all enemy resistances to “Weak/Fatal” for a turn OR restore sanity over time

Gebura-Ira/Iracundia (Wrath)-Increase ally damage output x2

Tiphereth-Acedia (Apathy)-Grant all allies an unbreakable shield for one turn

Netzach-Gula/Gulatia (Gluttony)-Recover % of max hp for all Sinners (could be either single turn or multi turn)

Hod-Luxuria (Lust)-Give a ton of offence, defence and other miscellaneous level ups or give the enemies a bunch of power downs and debuffs

Yesod-Invidia (Envy)-Stagger all enemies for a turn

Malkuth-Avaritia (Greed) or Vanagloria (Vainglory)-Either swap all Sinners currently in battle with the backups or add new skills to the enemy roster that are solely beneficial for you and forces them to use it (this one is probably the toughest, randomising work buttons doesnt exactly translate into combat abilities imo)

reasons for picking the sins i did:

Gloom for Chesed: honestly his story is more about fear than gloom but its the closest thing we have so far. also blue.

Wrath for Gebura: come on man this should be obvious

Apathy for Tiphereth: lack of expectations for life

Gluttony for Netzach: the alcohol and the plant/leaf vibes. also haha green

Lust for Hod: her desire to be a good person. also orange and her bleed-centric ruina floor

Envy for Yesod-haha purple (this ones probably wrong and i 100% not be mad about it if it is)

Greed/Vainglory for Malkuth: cause they were the only ones left. and also vainglory fits for her confidence in herself

First one out of my batch finally done! This was really cute to write, Netzach is great. I didn't specify what exactly the paintings are of, so that's up to you~. — Mod Hemlock

“Ah, sorry…”

“Oh— no, no, it's okay, here…”

You haven't even put brush to canvas yet, and it's already a disaster— you're reaching for the same brushes, reaching over each other to grab some paint samples, almost knocking things over and making a spill here or there… the setup might just take longer than the actual paintings themselves.

It turns out that Netzach's little art nook, tucked away in some little corner of his floor, is severely disorganized. You were only able to tell where you were going to paint together by the fresh (and not so fresh) color stains dappled on the floor and on the wood of the bookshelves.

He already anticipates your cleanliness concerns. “It's a neverending mess,” he murmurs, setting up your easels. “Don't bother trying to clean it. It's not your fault it's messy to begin with… and even if you were to anyway, it always reverts back to the same state when I finish another piece.”

You can't say you don't understand where he's coming from.

“Well, I'll try to keep any spills from happening, at least on my end, ” you state idly, a little reassurance.

You're always so considerate. Something pangs in his chest, but he dismisses you with a lazy wave of his hand. “Don't worry about it. You know I'm really not the type to care, but… well, I guess that's never stopped you before.”

Netzach's tone is as low and gloomy as ever, but he gives you a short, cute little smile that makes your heart warm anyway.

...

So, not only is co-painting (unsurprisingly) clumsy in practice, but it's also somewhat nerve-wracking for the both of you. It's clear neither of you are used to painting with a partner. It's intimidating. But as you both go along this anxiety is quelled, somewhat, because you realize the man next to you would never judge something so personal as a creative process, especially not yours.

There's another worry, one not so surface level. Not many people realize that art is an intimate activity; it allows the viewer to peer into the mind of the creator. And, for a perceptive audience, each brushstroke, accent, highlight is a physical manifestation of a precious thought, no matter how brief it lasts. Every direction, press, length is a choice; a subconscious one, but very much a choice still.

Perhaps this line of thought explains why Netzach is eagerly anticipating seeing your painting: the formation and gradual expression of, essentially, who you are. How all the parts and pieces come together to represent you as a person, and how your finishing touches, deliberate alterations change the final product. He wants to see the hidden, dormant side of you that, usually, only the canvas would have the privilege to bear witness to.

…He thinks that maybe he's been daydreaming about this opportunity for a while longer than he should have been.

...

It's not long before Netzach finds himself struggling.

Whether it's the performance anxiety that makes him want to take it seriously this time (he wishes to impress you, of course— if there was a time to scrounge up some motivation to try and perform well, it was now. For you.) or the exhaustion seeping through and settling behind his eyelids, or the overwhelming vacancy between his arms—

Oh.

Something occupies his thoughts already. It's you. Always you. This isn't surprising, but for once Netzach actively wishes he wouldn't be so pathetic as to be constantly craving you when you are literally in the same room as him.

For what must have been the 60th time today, his gaze gravitates towards you again. For only a moment, his aching heart tempts him into placing down his palette and brush, reaching towards your arm—

Netzach refrains, board-stiff once he can bear to look at you again and truly take in your expression. A pang of guilt makes him retract his hand; he understands, as an (albeit novice) artist, how seemingly insignificant, little things can interrupt the creative process— an already frustratingly delicate, skittish thing.

…Besides, you look cute when you're focused. So Netzach leaves you be, despite how he wishes to hold you, and returns to his own painting.

He tries to return to that elusive state of artistic focus, but the decaying part of his mind whispers and calls him selfish, unworthy again. His hand stalls mid-stroke, and he exhales, exasperated and laden with sorrow... but it's quickly hushed when he feels a weight on his shoulder.

Suddenly, you're nestling into the crook of his neck and wrapping your arms around him in a loose embrace. Despite the extra weight, Netzach swears he feels a little lighter. Immediately, he shifts to cling onto you and rest his chin on top of your head.

Some moments in comfortable silence pass. You speak softly and the sound is muffled by the fabric of his clothing. “I think I'm pretty much finished. How's it coming over here?”

“...It's alright, I guess… inspiration hasn't really been striking me right, so I don't think this'll turn out to be anything impressive.”

The sound and vibration of his voice, tired and whispery, is amplified by the lack of proximity— you practically melt.

One of your hands snakes up his torso and chest to absentmindedly fiddle with the brooch attached to his tie. “It doesn't have to be. Art is created for the purpose of expression, right? Not necessarily to be a grand gesture of your capabilities… although it very much can be.”

“Yeah… you're right.”

You feel him move (careful not to dislodge you from your sacred spot near his neck) and hear the sound of something being lifted up off the ground.

Netzach starts to speak again, but he's uncertain, and it pulls his sentence away to trail off awkwardly. “I think… I've got some ideas on how to finish this now. If you wanna stay there it's.. that's, uh, fine with me… if you wanna.”

Something tells you that's not exactly what he wanted to say. You gently pry it out of him.

“Do you want me to move?”

He answers, 'no', quicker and more emphatic than you think he's ever responded to anything in both of his lives. “Then I'll stay put. And you're comfy, so I don't want to move anyway.”

Netzach picked his head up earlier, so now you have a front row seat to the warmth crawling across his face and up to his ears. You take the opportunity to worsen his plight and crane your head to give him a languid kiss on the edge of his jaw, which earns you a shiver.

“Just don't get too comfortable. We really should clean up when you're done.”

All you get is a groan in response. So much for motivation.

The longing in Yesod's mind as he keeps yoyoing back and forth between Neztach in the Old Lab and in the Library makes me go 🥺🥹🥲

Man yeah...

I've seen a fair few takes on the different stages of their relationship. I really like the ones where there's something there before all of this happened - I think it's cute.

My own take, though, is that back then Giovanni was only really interested in Carmen romantically, but when he volunteered to be a subject for the cogito experiments Gabriel was still functional enough to be one of his doctors.

So, there'd be Gabriel, the guy who hates seeing people get hurt and die so much that he developed OCD and started self-harming over it, and at first maybe he didn't use gloves yet. And then later, Giovanni sees him with a turtleneck on, and then the gloves (at which point it's just a brush and not fingers going through his hair) and then, eventually, at some point, Gabriel's erratic behaviour has become worse and worse.

Maybe they'd become friends, or something close to it. Maybe they don't really talk much, but Gabriel's a steady, reassuring presence among all of the drugs and disorientation.

And then Gabriel disappears, and when Giovanni asks in a moment of lucidity what'd happened to him, Ayin... just can't answer.

Ayin knows that Gabriel's delusions had become bad enough to have them need to make sure that there was nothing behind them, and that now they know there wasn't they can't find Gabriel - which hurts his heart, because Gabriel had trusted him and he's dreading what they'll find when they do find him.

But he can't say that. So he just tells a white lie to the man who won't get to see what's become of the man he'd asked after, just as he'll later tell a white lie to say that his death will mean something better.

Giovanni getting a gut feeling that something's wrong, that Ayin's not being honest, but not being able to call him on it.

Just...

The idea that maybe they weren't anywhere close to being lovers, maybe calling them 'friends' would be a stretch, but they definitely meant something to each other.

It's that connection that I see them building off of, along with all those millennia of working alongside each other in the same layer, always awake at the start of the loops (more or less, since we see Netzach, Yesod, and Hod in Malkuth's cutscenes before they're unlocked).

There's a sense of trust and understanding there, I think. It's-

I said to a friend yesterday that I think that I could easily see them as a slow burn, and if either of them tried dating outside of each other, the other would just send twitchy glances their way. Not out of "but I want to be your only one" jealousy (partially because they know everyone in the Library too well for that).

Nah, it'd be more like... in cases where I write/ship Netzach/Chesed, say, I could easily see Yesod just randomly turning up on the Social Sciences floor.
