Sometimes images just fly together from all four corners of the collage consciousness: the images we knew we were going to use and why we were going to use them; those we didn’t know why but used anyway; those we thought we weren’t going to use, but still did; and those we really thought we were going to use, knew exactly why, and for some reason still didn’t use. This latter group isn’t of course in the collage, but nonetheless sits just outside it and may, like the Bad Fairy in the tale, burst in at any moment.
So, approximately, it was with the first collage in The Iconostasis of Anxiety, which in draft was called ‘Doubting Saint Thomas Didymus Keats’. (Thankfully, none of the draft titles were needed for the pamphlet.) Here I knew I wanted to shake up Severn’s somewhat pious image of Keats reading, and thought giving him an octopus head might help. The octopus in question is one you may may seen sprinting across the ocean floor in a YouTube clip.
For some reason, I was obsessed at the time with the creatures that Alexander the Great was supposed to have taken with him in the first ‘submarine’, a mythical glass barrel in which the cat comes along to sweeten the air. There’s also a chicken, or perhaps a rooster, perhaps to tell the time - I did know this, but part of the process of collaging, indeed part of the process of composition, is forgetting just enough of the right stuff to become, unlike Saint Thomas, ‘capable of being in uncertainties’. The look of this particular cat had always seemed to me genuinely to be that of a cat who had looked at Alexander the Great.
On the wall in the Severn portrait is a smaller portrait of Shakespeare, acting as a sort of guarantor of Keats’s greatness, and it dawned on me that I had another collage with Shakespeare in it, only with the top of his head replaced by that of a squirrel. So in it went, along with the text, perhaps illegible in the print version, ‘the pie is left to find its own shapespeare:’
I really liked the idea of there being a Shapespeare, and this sort of balanced the bathysphere with the cat in it. Then I remembered that the squirrel’s head had come from yet another collage, an autumnal image in which I had first had a go at the Severn (which, ironically, I actually quite like), severin’ quite a bit of Keats in order to turn him into a beer-guzzling sciuridean chimera, if that’s the right expression, and even if it isn’t. This is the one which both sits outside and, in various helpful ways, bursts in.

Its Not So Much Determined Or Redetermined (As Rededetermined)
dual causality - a special form of overdetermination: to engage with a mind (or your mind or your mind being a mind) is to create that mind
through the asynchrony of time we can determine redetermination, i.e. nothing ever happens at the same time
it is trivial to imagine a mind determined to learn about the development of the mind, and develop in opposition to that map of development
enacting the multilectic of dialectics and didactics
meaning-connecting is meaning/connection
meaning connection connects

This suggests to me that description, logic, and hypothesis, reaching toward higher and higher levels of generality, come finally to an antithesis logic can't bridge. But poetry, the imagination, can create a vehicle, at once concrete and universal, one and many, similar and diverse, that is capable of bridging the duality and of bringing us the experience of a "real" world that is also a reconciled, a unified, real world. And this vehicle is the only expression of language, of words, that I know of that contradicts my quotation from Lao-tse, because a poem becomes, like reality, an existence about which nothing that can be said in words is worth saying.
– A. R. Ammons, "A Poem is a Walk"

Negative Capability: Learning to Live with Uncertainty, Doubt, and Mystery
In a world obsessed with answers, certainty, and five-step solutions, there’s something quietly radical about embracing the unknown. About standing in the middle of uncertainty and not rushing to resolve it. That’s what the poet John Keats called Negative Capability — and though it was first described in the 1800s, it feels especially relevant today. Keats believed that true creative and…

David Richo, How to Be an Adult in Relationships
“To know the night is a lot like knowing poetry, and knowing poetry requires what Keats called “negative capability,” the capacity for “being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching after fact and reason.” To know the night means having the clarity that some things are and should be and always will be hidden, for the night has been, or is, or should always be, the time of lovers, revolutionaries, and other conspirators. The night world is that which should be, or once always was, veiled.”
— Anne Boyer, from her essay “The Fall of Night”, Lapham’s Quarterly, Volume XII, Number 1 | Winter 2019 (via kitchen-light)

Negative Capability
We were talking about Negative Capability: capable of being in uncertainties, Mysteries and doubts without any irritable reaching after fact or reason. (Keats) We were talking about it in relation to creativity and being an artist. It is the ability to wait. One might be very active but within this activity, there is an openness to what may come without “any irritable reaching” for a finished…

'' ‘Negative capability’ was how the poet John Keats described the writer’s ability to pursue a vision of artistic beauty even when it led to uncertainty, confusion and intellectual doubt. For analytic thinkers the equivalent ability is tolerating the pain and confusion of not knowing, rather than imposing ready-made or omnipotent certainties on ambiguous situations or emotional challenges. To think clearly we must have a scientific, evidence-based approach which nevertheless holds a space for the ‘negative capability’ needed to retain an open mind.''

If I was Cait, I would've simply hauled Vi to a private room with a bed, urgency and desperation and yearning be damned. I could be a privileged piece of shit with a history of violence against the impoverished innocents, but I'd still draw the line at having my first intimate encounter with my girlfriend, who was in prison since she was a kid (and I know this cause I was the one who bailed her out, even if it was for my own benefit), in a fucking jail cell (that her sister was locked in less than an hour ago!!!).
#can you tell im losing my sanity the more i think abt it#arcane#arcane spoilers#arcane vi#anti caitvi#anti caitlyn kiramman#tbf i do have beef with the writers for fucking her up#rather than just simply hating cait as a character#but this is cait critical so im tagging it so ppl can filter it out if they have the tag blocked#no need to bring negativity to the people capable of enjoying themselves against all odds
