Nest of Vampires (2021)
My rating: 3/10
Almost impressive: Up to about the halfway point, you wouldn't think there's much of a plot to lose, and yet the movie manages to do just that.

Best Fantasy Anime (with mostly female leads)
Listen, I love fantasy anime. They are fun and I love a fight scene as much as the next girl. I am relatively uninterested in male leads mostly because of the *cough, cough* excessive fan service. So, without further adu, if you are interested in some fantasy with women at the helm here's what I got.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Yona of the Dawn
Inuyasha
Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord
7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!
Fluffy Paradise
Ascendance of a Bookworm
I Shall Survive Using Potions!
The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent
Tearmoon Empire
My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear
I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
Reincarnated as a Sword
Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools
Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits-
The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess
Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!
Management of Novice Alchemist
I'll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History
Nina the Starry Bride
Snow White with the Red Hair
ZENSHU
These ones I am keeping an eye on but signs point to a favorable outcome.

Unexpected Surprise -Klaus M.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(For everyone requesting more Alpha Klaus, specifically Klaus with a needy Omega)
Tumblr media
Klaus had been looking for werewolves once again after fixing his Hybrid problem, he was alone this time but he couldn’t find it in himself to be bothered by that. He changed a whole pack without any problems before the ex-Alpha of that pack helped him find another that would push his Hybrid number to 25. At least that’s what they thought, it turns out there was a little surprise waiting for him in this pack, something he hadn’t seen in a very long time.
‘They’re waiting for you now, Alpha.’ One of his Betas told him as he walked into the clearing of the woods seeing all the tents and food laying around, all of the pack kneeling and surrounded by his Hybrids.
‘Well done. I assume you all know who I am?’ None of them spoke up and he was shocked by that, most Alphas would immediately speak up for their pack in this type of situation. ‘Where is your Alpha?’ He asked, leaning into one of the women who flinched, her eyes looking to the right and as he followed her stare he listened hard and heard an aggressive growl in the distance. ‘Feed them my blood and kill them, I’ll be right back.’ He spoke to no one in particular but he knew his sired hybrids would do as they were bid.
Klaus walked through the trees, silently following the 2 sets of footsteps, or rather one set of footsteps that was seemingly dragging the other. ‘I’m sorry! Please Stop?! Alpha!’ A girl was begging as they came into his view he could see the large man holding her around the waist to his side and dragging her along as she tried to keep her legs moving fast enough to match his long strides, no matter how evident it was that she couldn’t.
‘Keep moving!’ He demanded and as she whimpered something inside of the Hybrid had enough. That sound cracked his heart in two and he couldn’t identify why, but he knew this wolf had gone far enough prompting the Original Hybrid to clear his throat. The man froze, pulling the girl to his chest and out of Klaus’ view. ‘You keep your mouth shut, you hear me?’ He whispered.
‘Where do you think you’re going? What kind of Alpha abandons his pack?’ Klaus hated this man already, and he knew he was going to kill him but he wanted answers first.
‘Run.’ The Alpha whispered suddenly, shoving the girl and turning around, lunging at Klaus who was much too quick for him, watching the girl do as she was told and take off into the woods. He huffed a sigh but also appreciated the obedience of this Alphas pack. She was terrified but she still did as her Alpha told her to do…this girl could be a good addition for him.
‘That was a mistake.’ Klaus spoke, grabbing the Alpha by his shirt and just as he was about to snap his neck he smelled it, the sweet, lingering scent on his clothes and Klaus found himself with his hand around the wolfs throat, snarling at him angrily. ‘You really thought you could hide her from me?’
‘She’s mine. That Omega belongs to me, not some half breed monster.’ He felt his fangs grow as his eyes changed color, despising being called those slurs more than anything else.
‘Hmm. Just for that, I’m going to keep you alive and you can watch while she submits to her new Alpha right in front of you.’ Klaus smirked before slamming his skull back into the tree and watching him collapse before turning and running after the girl. She was faster than he expected and it took him a moment to catch up before wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her to a stop. She snarled, trying to yank his arm away before she suddenly froze and he did as well, taking in her scent and hearing his wolf rioting in his skull as if trying to break out of its cage and take over the body they shared. ‘Hello Omega.’ He greeted, holding her tenderly now as he spun her around and met her soft, sweet eyes for the first time.
She couldn’t have been more than 19 and he hated that Alpha asshole for thinking he could claim an Omega that wasn’t his. It had become something of a trend in the werewolf community over the last few hundred years, Alphas claiming Omegas that weren’t their mates and doing so younger and younger. There was a time that Omegas weren’t allowed to be touched by members of their own pack until they had found their mate which is how it would have been when Klaus had been human and while he had found it a bit excessive, if this was the other option then he would take it.
‘What’s your name Omega?’ He asked softly and she seemed shocked by his demeanor.
‘Y/n.’ She responded as he brushed her hair from her eyes.
‘That’s a beautiful name. My name is Klaus…but I think you knew that?’ She nodded a bit and he leaned forward, unable to stop himself from nuzzling her neck and taking in her scent that was even stronger now. ‘Come, let’s get you back to your new pack.’
‘Please don’t hurt me?’ She pleaded and Klaus found himself hating the fear in her eyes as she looked up at him. For over 1000 years he has relished in peoples terror when looking at him, but that emotion on her face broke something inside of him and he knew he needed to fix it.
‘I will never hurt you, Y/n. Unlike that sorry excuse of an Alpha back there, he will be punished for harming you, and for trying to steal you from me.’
‘Steal? How could he steal me? I didn’t know you.’
‘But you do now, don’t you feel differently for me than you do him? I make you feel something you’ve never felt before, I know because you do the same for me…you’re my mate.’ She looked surprised and honestly, it was adorable. ‘Come along Princess, your pack is already changing.’ She reached out cautiously but took his hand and held it firmly which he adored, it made him feel like she needed him, a feeling he was quickly starting to adore. Centuries ago he had assured his older brother Elijah that he was insane, that he would never find an Omega-never find a mate that he wanted to spend his life with…he hated that Elijah was so offer correct. Klaus needed her now and he would ensure that his Omega needed him forever as well.
They walked back to the camp and Klaus saw that one of his Hybrids had brought the idiot back for him. He helped Y/n pack her things before they sat together and she let him hold her to his chest tightly. He knew he made her feel safe when she began purring as she snuggled against his side, curling into his warm body. It was just about then that the wolves began to wake up and Klaus nodded to one of his Betas to feed them Elena’s blood.
‘I want to make this perfectly clear to all of you from this pack. That idiot over there-‘ he pointed to the “Alpha” that was sitting off to the side with 2 Hybrids to make sure he didn’t move. ‘-he is not your Alpha anymore. He abandoned you when he knew you couldn’t escape and tried to get away with an Omega. My Omega! This cannot go ignored, I’m sure you can all see why. You do not get to hurt my mate and live, no one does. Ever Again. Do you understand?’ He asked, looking down at the quiet girl beside him who was running her nose up and down his chest to take in his scent stronger. ‘If anyone harms you-hits you, touches you, hurts your feelings-I will kill them. All you need to do is tell me, and I will not put up with lies…is that agreed?’ She nodded, smiling a bit.
‘No lying…from either of us.’ Her surety that he would follow his own rule was truly adorable and he knew in that moment that he wouldn’t lie to her as he kissed her forehead before stepping over to the idiot who’s name wasn’t worth learning. A moment later Klaus was plunging his hand into his chest cavity, ripping his heart out and watching the light fade from his eyes as the wolves gasped in shock.
‘The next person who hurts my mate will get so much worse than that. Am I clear?’ Some of the wolves mumbled a “yes Alpha” while the others simply nodded and he quickly cleaned his hand off, not willing to dirty his precious Omega with blood like that. ‘Go!’ He demanded, his Hybrids leaving the area and taking the new ones back to the camp they were staying at while they hunted more wolves. ‘I’m sorry you had to see that, Precious. I will make sure you don’t see anything like it again.’ He expected that fearful look again but he didn’t get it, she just smiled up at him before nuzzling into his chest.
‘Alpha protected me. Thank you.’ She responded and he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close and realizing that her scent was different now, it was the same but more…sweet? She was excited and he could smell it.
‘Alpha will always protect you Princess.’ Klaus dug his nose down into her neck and her scent was heavenly, drawing him in and making the beast in his head desperate for her even more than before. ‘Mine.’ It rumbled in his chest, lifting her thighs into his hands and pinning her to the closest tree, hearing her gasp in surprise.
‘Yours Alpha.’ She began purring excitedly as his hands found her ass and squeezed tightly as her legs locked around him, her hips grinding against him roughly. ‘Alpha, Alpha, Alpha!’ She panted as she tried to hump her hips against his.
‘Such a needy little thing.’ Klaus held her thighs up around him and nuzzled her neck. He knew he couldn’t take her like this, his precious Omega deserved so much better than getting rutted against a tree their first time but he also knew he couldn’t take her back to the pack smelling all needy and slick. ‘Move those pretty hips for me baby, let Alpha feel you.’ She whined, thrusting her hips up against his cock which was now hard and desperate through his jeans as he ground his hips into hers.
‘Alpha! Please-need you!’
‘And you have me Precious, Alpha is right here. Rub that sweet little pussy, I know she’s dripping for me…Alpha is gonna have to make you even more wet until I can get you home.’ He rocked himself up against her as her nails grew into claws, digging into her Alphas shoulders painfully as she felt his hard cock through his pants rubbing against her clit and she cried out into his neck as he pushed her over the edge. Her needy whines in his ear were like a sound from the heavens as it pushed him over the edge himself, rutting against her another moment before pulling his pants down enough to free his cock. A second later he was taking hold of her pants and panties to pull them away from her skin, taking hold of his cock and pumping his fist around himself until he came into her panties. Turning her head up to face him and smashing their lips together, Klaus found himself and his wolf truly content in that moment. The solution wasn’t as good as cumming inside of his Omega the way his wolf wanted but it would ensure that she smelled like him completely and totally until he could get her away from everyone.
Klaus knew of course that even if his Hybrids decided to betray him and try and harm his Omega that he could protect her, however his instinct to make her smell like him around his pack was stronger than the belief that she was safe.
Taking his mate back home was a wonderful feeling that Klaus didn’t imagine actually existed but once he shut the door behind them-his Pack in the clearing behind his house in the woods-he felt his wolf seem to settle in his head. (Minus the intense urge to rut and mark his Mate that he would always have regardless of the situation).
‘Stay right here Omega, Alpha is going to get you everything you need, I promise.’ Klaus swore, having taken Y/n to one of the free bedrooms so that she would have her own space for the both of them but also so that she could be alone if and when she was ever upset with him or desperate to be alone-he knew Omegas felt like that sometimes and he wants her to be able to have a safe space whenever she needed it.
Y/n was there in the bedroom for about 5 minutes fixing the nest as best she could before the door opened again and she was instantly hit with a disgusting scent-her head spinning to see a Hybrid at the door that she hadn’t seen before. ‘Oh! I’m sorry, I was looking for Klaus and…wow…that smells really good…is that you?’ He asked, stepping into the bedroom but only getting 2 steps before he was flung backwards out the door.
‘Okay Tyler, I understand that you were never taught about your heritage correctly which is (and I need to stress this to you) the only reason I am letting you live after wandering into an Omegas nesting space.’ Klaus knelt down beside the Beta who held his hands up, clearly terrified of her Alpha. ‘This Omega is mine, Tyler. Am I making myself clear to you?’
‘Yes! I’m sorry! I-sh-should I apologize to her-‘
‘If you ever even look at her again I will rip your intestines out and choke you to death with them. Now…Get Out!’ He demanded, Tyler taking off down the stairs and out of the house at lightning speed. ‘Are you alright my darling?’ Klaus asked her right away, moving the new blankets and pillows that he had just gotten for her.
‘I’m okay Alpha…nest?’ She made a noise of questioning after finishing fluffing up the pillows and he stared at it in shock. In 1000 years on this planet and God knows how many werewolves he had fucked in that time-Klaus had never before seen a nest.
‘It is unlike anything I had ever imagined before I must admit.’ He meant it as a compliment of course, but that is not what she heard he realized as her eyes welled up with tears. ‘Oh! No! It’s amazing Omega! I just meant I never could have imagined something this wonderful, and believe me, I’ve wondered for a long time…may I?’ He asked, being respectful even though he knew she would welcome him into her nest always.
She nodded, holding her arms out and he quickly stripped to his boxers, climbing into the most comfortable structure he has ever experienced in 1000 years. Sliding under the blankets was a wonderful experience and he couldn’t imagine what it would be like to drift off in this next after rutting his Omega.
‘Everything is perfect Omega, you’re safe in our nest with your Alpha…you sleep now my love.’ He urged as he was overcome with the feeling of her purring into his neck which dragged him down into the most restful sleep he had ever experienced with his Omega by his side.

Poly!The Lost boys Nest Headcannons
Centered around Mate!Reader
Mostly sfw, but the last three are nsfw
Tumblr media
•Vampire Nesting is a traditional practice categorized as a mating/courting behavior
•When vampires meet their future/current mates a repressed part of their biology activates. This includes many different behaviors including nesting.
•Bats naturally use scent to attract their mates as well as fluttering their wings, vocalizing desire, and grooming each other
•This translated into vampires as Cologne/perfume scenting, gentle touches, romantic speech, purring, buzzing, and brushing/combing hair
•Once courting turns into romantic relationships Vampires begin to set up a nest for their mate to stay in
•When David, Dwayne, Paul, and Marko begin to experience these nesting behaviors they all connect and start the process for you
•Before they met you they were all just mated to each other and built a nest for each new attention to their partnerships.
•David built one for Dwayne
•They both worked together to make a new one for Paul
•And when Marko came along the three of them remade the nest for him too
•Now all four of them are deconstructing their old nest to make it new for you
•This involves a lot of collecting materials, making new materials, and, of course, shouting
•They all work together to construct the pile of soft fabrics and furs and shape it to hold all five of you with extra wiggle room
•They make it pretty clear that you're not allowed to help but you can contribute some clothes, blankets, and an occasional opinion
•They ask if you want to have the nest on the ground or elevated slightly
•Which basically means ‘do you want two smushed together mattresses on the floor? Or do you want two bed frames pushed together?’
•Marko will sew the mattresses together so they can't come apart
•Whenever you get too close to the area, you are kindly redirected somewhere else
•”You can watch Darling, but you can't step into the nest quite yet.” Dwayne would say softly while shuffling you off to a dresser or bean bag you can sit on
•It was quite amusing watching them shout at each other for being in the way of putting something in the wrong area
•”You can't put the blanket all the way down there! That makes it useless!” Marko would snap at Paul
•”You're putting to much of your stuff near the top! Leave room for the rest of us!” Paul would complain at David
•It was a complete back and forth, with even Dwayne raising his voice when Marko kick some of his contributions out of the way
•What was funnier was the tone shift when you spoke up. One moment they're yelling about some and when you chime in they become softer with you. That only added when they immediately start yelling at each other again.
”DON’T FUCKING MOVE MY SHIRT!”
“THEN GET IT OUT OF THE WAY!”
“What if you just layed your shirts side by side instead of just throwing them out?”
“Good idea, Love! You're so smart!”
“HEAR THAT YOU SHITTER? THEY SAID NOT TO MOVE MY STUFF!”
•All of them are in snippy moods, so it's best just not to get in the way
•Once everything is in place they finally let you into the nest. They wanted you to be the first one, so not only could you get your scent all over it, but to allow you to make adjustments.
•Once everything is to your liking they ask if they can join you. As soon as you say yes they're on all sides of you.
•Kissing, cuddling, purrs, and buzzing all around while they push you into the soft fabrics
•They also make sure to give you the rundown of nest culture and etiquette
•”I know we typically don't give a fuck about rules, but these ones we care about.”
•The basic run down is:
-No one is allowed in the Nest other then you and them
-No one is allowed to even touch the Nest other then you guys
-Things can be taken out at anytime for almost any reason but for the most part you should just leave that to them
-You have the right to kick anyone out of the nest at anytime
-This is a where you'll sleep when your in the cave
-The nest is basically your sanctuary and they'll treat it as such
•All of this told to you sporadically and in-between several acts of affection
•For the first couple of days of there being a new nest, whenever you're in the cave they want you in the nest
•They will actually pick you up and put your there (it's a bit frustrating at first but it only lasts about four days)
•You bet your ass the sex is spectacular too
•They will bring you food and water, read to you, massage you, and even go down on you constantly ‘just so the nest gets all of your scent’
•All and all royalty treatment
Thanks for reading <3

My Favorite Books I Read in 2024
I read a ton of good novels last year- 32 in all (and uh, 82 manga/graphic novels, but we’ll examine that in another post). Here’s a link to my Goodreads year in books (the manga is at the beginning, the novels start with Red, White & Royal Blue) and my storygraph wrap up.
Read my posts on my favorite anime of 2024 here and on my favorite manga/graphic novels of 2024 here.
I got to have fun reading some classics like The Odyssey and The Wizard of Oz, but I also read a lot of notable newer books! Let's take a look!
Tumblr media
The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White
The story follows Silas, a trans guy in an alternate 1883 where violet-eyed people have the power to talk to spirits. If someone is perceived as a man by society, this power is treated as useful. But for anyone society perceives as a woman, it's a different story. There's this idea that the power to speak to the dead causes women to "go mad". Silas is diagnosed with this "sickness" and gets thrown in a horrible sanatorium that forces patients to become obedient wives. But this school has some dark things going on under the surface, and Silas might not even make it out of this alive...
This is a horror that keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way though. The setting is vivid and creative, the characters who suffer under the weight of oppression are varied and complex, and the protagonist is easy to root for. It's very spooky, pretty relentless, pretty gory and pretty twisty. It's very hard to figure out who you can actually trust! It's also a fascinating exploration of transphobia and misogyny. It obviously draws on real things women and trans people struggled with in the 1800s (accusations of having "hysteria" and other "illnesses" just for existing) but also talks about ableism too, as the main character is autistic. It really makes you consider how terrifying and isolating it would be to live in a time with so few resources and such limited knowledge, but of course, this still persists in a lot of places today.
It's not all horror though, there is some catharsis and nice moments of Silas finding solace and support in other trans people and it leads to some really touching scenes and relationships. There's also satisfaction in seeing marginalized people banding together and doing all they can to fight back.
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries and Emily Wilde’s Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett
This fantasy series follows Emily, a professor and dedicated researcher of the mysterious and often dangerous fae. Emily is out to make an encyclopedia of fae lore, and she has no interest in socializing with others when there's faeries to find. Unfortunately for her, her scholarly rival, Wendell, show up and decides to be all insufferably social and charming and interested in her. He might secretly be a faerie though, and Emily is interested in that, so, ugh, maybe she has to put up with him.
These books are a ton of fun. It's a cozy adventure the creatively draws on some cool fae lore. It's biggest charm is our protagonist, who is wonderfully grumpy and stubborn and clever and only wants to bury herself in researching this thing she likes She's the kind of person who puts footnotes in their own journal, and it's delightful.
Even when she starts catching feelings for Wendell, her research is always her number one priority. And Wendell, who is very obviously smitten with her the second he appears, is okay with that! In fact, her stubbornness and fearless, unshakeable commitment to her research is pretty much exactly why Wendell is so down bad for her, which makes him a really relatable love interest. He's obnoxious in a genuinely charming way and the teasing banter between Wendell and Emily is very entertaining.

Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura
Kokoro has been unable to go outside her house ever since she dropped out of school due to horrible bullying. One day, her mirror glows, and she enters it to find herself in a castle with six other students. A little girl in a wolf mask tells all of them that there's a room in the castle that can grant one single wish, but only for one person, so whoever finds the room first gets the wish. They'll have an opportunity to hang out in the castle every day until the deadline, after which the castle will disappear. But as the kids get to know each other, things get more complicated.
This is such a lovely, healing story I'm glad I finally got around to reading it. While the story goes into the causes behind the epidemic of hikikomori and futoku in Japanese students, it's also a universally relatable story about the ways bullying, grief and trauma can affect a child and lead to severe anxiety. Kokoro's slow journey of recovery is touching and feels realistic, despite the fantastical elements. The book shows how brave and hard it is to take these small steps, and how Kokoro struggles to even talk about what happened. The focus of the book is the connections the kids make with each other. It explores the secrets they carry, how they accidentally hurt each other, but also how they ultimately are able to empathize with and support each other. Each character is interesting and achingly human in their own right. The whimsical fairy tale elements of the story complement the themes well, and the book delivers some really solid plot twists that serve to make its themes stronger too.
One thing to warn for is we learn that a fourteen year old girl has entered a relationship with a man in his 20s. This isn't shown to be healthy or good for her though, and the reason she does this is heartbreaking. There's also some (non graphic) attempted SA. With that in mind, this is just a really cool tale, and I full recommend it!
First Light by Liz Kerin
This is the second part of a duology that began with Night’s Edge, which I recommended last year, and honestly, this book is even better than the first one, which was already pretty great. The book continues to use vampirism to explore the cycle of abuse effectively. This time, Mia is seeking vengeance on her mother's abusive ex-boyfriend, who was responsible for turning her Mom into a vampire. But when she finds the ex-boyfriend and infiltrates his little cult (with her kinda-girlfriend, who actually genuinely wants to join), she gets manipulated by him the way her mother did, her trauma and past making it easy to fall into a cycle that's familiar. She starts to understand her mother, and vampires in general, more than she ever thought she would. It's just a really interesting take on vampires, and this one actually addressed some of the thing I thought were a little iffy in the first book. It's dark, but there's also a lot of catharsis.
I think these books are easily among the top of my list of favorite vampire media. Content warning for abuse, and the vampire bites having a hint of a metaphor for sexual violence like they often do.
Tumblr media
Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll
Bright Young Women follows a young woman in the aftermath of a serial killer breaking into her sorority and killing several of her friends. The media and police are all too willing to question her testimony and distort the details to fit their narrative. Another woman suspects her girlfriend was murdered by the same killer, and they team up to find the truth.
Bright Young Women is a page-turner, and I honestly didn't realize it was so heavily based on the Ted Bundy murders until I read the reviews, because I didn't know much about him (or most real life serial killers, a fact which I am very okay with). But the book is here to dunk on Ted Bundy and the ways his "intelligence and charisma" were greatly exaggerated by the media and even the judge at his actual trial, rage about the ways the victims stories are erased in favor of the killers who are glamorized and fawned over, point out the ways the police constantly fail victims, and to set the record straight to those who idolize serial killers.
The story centers the survivors and victims, talking about their lives and triumphs and the goals they were working toward and what could have been. It's depressing, but it also shines the light on the bravery of the women whose testimonies got the killer convicted even when the rest of the world was dismissive of them.
This book is a really tough read, and obviously there's a huge content warning for sexual violence, the graphic aftermath of horrific deaths...the method of one rape and murder actually really disturbed me (mentioned in the aftermath, the book never shows the actual acts), it was so gross and horrible (and unfortunately, happened in real life). Read with caution. But it's a book that will definitely stick with me for a while.
The Rise of Kyoshi and the Shadow of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee
I never got around to the Kyoshi novels because there's been a lot of mediocre Avatar the Last Airbender spin-off media...but I should not have hesitated, because these were actually really good. They follow the life of Kyoshi, the famously badass Earth Kingdom Avatar, and shows how she became how she is.
Yee does a great job capturing the world of Avatar, while also expanding on it in interesting ways. I really liked a lot of the little details that deepened the world--for instance, it's mentioned that Firebenders shave their heads when they lose an Agni Kai because of the disgrace, which gives context to Zuko's initial hairstyle and actually makes the fact he actively kept his hair from growing back for three years extremely sad, since it implies he thought he would only be worthy of that once his father approved of him again. It was something I think Yee definitely came up with himself, but it made a lot of sense with the show in a way that felt natural.
The novels were definitely darker than the show, but not in a Netflix Avatar let's-watch-a-bunch-of-people-we-don't-care-about-burn-to-death way, but in a way that felt natural to Kyoshi's circumstances. I found I usually did care a lot when a character died because they were often likeable. I found the death of one character in particular near the end of book one genuinely heartbreaking.
The books did a good job explaining why Kyoshi became more severe later on, and in how she wrestles with how far she can go with her role as the Avatar, what justice is, and whether killing people solves anything. The second book was not quite as good as the first, with its decision to switch out the cast of the characters for entirely new people and just being more meandering in general, but it was still a good read. I definitely rec if you're an Avatar fan, odds are you'll really enjoy them!
Voyage of the Damned by Frances White
In the country of Concordia, each province has one heir who has a "Blessing"--basically a unique magic power. Ganymedes (a.k.a Dee)'s dad cheated on his wife a bunch, and one of the children from those affairs must have inherited the Blessing rather than Dee. To keep this a secret, Dee's dad makes him pretend to have a Blessing. Now Dee has to go on a voyage with the other Blessed and, sick of the charade, he's decided he's going to make them all hate him so he gets kicked out of the group. But that plan is extremely interrupted when his shipmates start getting murdered one by one.
Voyage of Damned is just a really good time. A queer murder mystery romp with a ton of suspicious and varied characters vying for power, a fun lead with a distinctive voice, tragic romance, cute friendships, and even some touching exploration of prejudice, suicidal ideation and self loathing. It was just extremely readable and I was entertained the whole way though, but it also made me feel things sometimes. It also delivered a ton of solid plot twists, including a big and satisfying one that made me want to go back and read through a bunch of scenes knowing the truth (and I did).
Dee and his distinctive glib narration probably won't be for everyone but I liked him and vibed with him. He goes through a lot, including finding out his boyfriend he'd been separated from for five years is now engaged to a girl and acting super cold to him. The tension between Dee and Ravi and how it affects all his relationships is a real emotional hook, and his banter and dynamics with the people he likes (or even some people he doesn't) are generally fun to read. If all I've said sounds cool to you, give it a try, you might like it!

Bonus Rec: Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell
Shesheshen is a blob monster who dines on the humans (mostly those who try to kill her). She can look human with some effort, and go into town to feed sometimes. But the she falls in love with a kind woman named Homily. This clearly means she needs to do the proper romantic thing and lay some eggs in Homily so their little monster kids can be born by devouring Homily for the inside out. Wait, humans aren't into that? That's awkward. And despite her biological impulse she doesn't really want Homily to die? Even more awkward. Oh, and Homily's family are monster hunters and it turns out that was Homily's brother Shesheshen ate a while back? Super mega awkward. What's a monster to do...
I'm a lover of actually monstrous monster women, so I was hyped for this one, especially with the great cover by @jmfenner91! While it disappointed me in some areas, it was still fun and heartwarming enough I'd recommend it.
Our monster lady is a great character, and her unique point of view where she's nonchalant, cynical and often hilariously baffled by humans is a joy to read. Her personality, her super gross biology, and how she sees the world...she's so charming and her romance with Homily is very cute. I also really like that the book focused on healing from abuse and finding a way to move forward with each other's support. I also liked the romantic climax, and the discussion of finding kissing weird, because that made me feel seen.
There were quite a few things that kept it from being a five star review in my heart though--Sheshesen is completely disconnected from people, has just spent her life alone in her cave, but she knows what an abuser is and exactly how abusive people operate in a weirdly modern way. Abusers are also only portrayed one way: openly cruel and evil with zero sympathetic qualities to every single person they interact with. There is no cycle of abuse with these people, they never act nice to to draw their victims back in, we don't see more subtle, manipulative emotional abuse, almost no claims of caring about people. Obviously cartoonishly abusive rich people exist in real life, and I don't necessarily need abusers to be humanized. Still...it just felt like the nuance of most real life abuse was being ignored. And because these people were so one dimensional, it was pretty tedious to spend SO much time with them.
Still, the book was very monstrously sweet, and it was overall a good read. I wish it could have been a little more, but what we got was pretty nice.

The morning sun hadn’t even cleared the tops of the trees when Sam was already waiting by the barn, reins in hand, a smug smirk pulling at the edge of his mouth as he watched you stumble sleepily toward him.
“You’re late,” he called.
“You didn’t even tell me when to show up,” you shot back, but you couldn’t stop the grin that spread across your face. He looked good—too good. Cowboy hat low over his eyes, sleeves rolled up, the curve of his biceps flexing every time he adjusted the reins.
“I figured you’d be up early after last night,” he murmured, voice a little lower as he stepped toward you and gently placed the cowboy hat back on your head—the same one he’d left there the night before. “Still fits.”
You swallowed. Barely.
He gave you a hand up onto the saddle, placing his hand on the small of your back to steady you. “Time to teach you how to ride proper,” he said with a little twinkle in his eye that made your heart stutter.
The morning passed in a haze of muscle memory and heat. Sam was patient—stern, but gentle. His hand on your thigh when you leaned too far. His voice at your ear, deep and steady, every instruction laced with something that made your stomach flutter.
But the peace didn’t last.
Just as you were gaining confidence and trotting through a shaded grove, a call came through his phone. Blood drained from his face instantly. “Nearby vamp nest. Three townsfolk missing.” He gave you a look that made your stomach turn cold. “We’re close. We gotta hit it now.”
Everything shifted. You rode hard, side by side, no time for hesitation. The nest was half-dug into a hillside, filthy and damp. The air reeked of decay.
The fight was fast and brutal.
Your blade sang. Sam’s was a blur. Blood spattered across your shirts, necks, hands. A vampire had knocked you back into the wall, sharp nails slicing your arm, but you’d gotten it first—blade through the throat, a scream on your lips.
When it was over, you and Sam stood panting in the early afternoon haze, dripping sweat and blood, the air still humming with violence.
“I—my horse ran,” you breathed out, eyes scanning the treeline.
Sam didn't even hesitate.
He walked over, grabbed the reins of his stallion, then turned and tugged you close. “Up,” he ordered, gripping your waist and lifting you like you weighed nothing. You ended up on the saddle in front of him, your thighs pressed tightly together, your back flush to his chest.
Your breathing was shallow. His arms wrapped around you, one hand holding the reins, the other on your hip. You could feel his heartbeat. Fast. Thunderous. And under it all, that electric current of something unspoken but burning.
You held on to his waist, fingers curling into the soft fabric of his shirt.
The ride back was quiet, intense.
And when you dismounted near the barn, still dirty, still shaken, you didn’t let go.
Neither did he.
The sun was dipping low by the time you found yourselves behind the barn, hidden from the world by a wide oak and the soft nickers of distant horses. You were seated on the edge of the saddle now, facing Sam, legs on either side of his, the saddle creaking slightly under your weight.
“You alright?” he asked quietly, his hands sliding to rest gently on your hips.
“Yeah. Just…” You looked up at him. “That was close.”
He nodded slowly, expression unreadable—but his thumb started to move in slow circles at your waist. “Sometimes it takes staring death in the face to realize what you really want.”
You blinked. “And what do you want?”
His jaw tensed. “You.”
The word landed between you like a gunshot. And before you could respond, he shifted slightly on the saddle, spreading his knees just a little.
“Thought I’d teach you how to ride somethin’ else,” he murmured, his voice low and edged with that same teasing heat from earlier—but now it burned.
Your breath caught as his thigh flexed beneath you. You didn’t need him to explain.
Heat flooded your cheeks, your chest, your core.
And still…you didn’t stop yourself when your hips tilted forward just enough to feel it.
“Sam,” you whispered.
His eyes darkened. “S’just me, sweetheart. You’re safe. Take what you need.”
It started slow—tentative pressure, a test. But his hands stayed steady on your hips, guiding you, encouraging the rhythm. Fully clothed, fully wrapped in tension, in something bigger than lust. Something tethered to trust, to adrenaline, to finally letting go.
The saddle creaked beneath you. His breath was warm against your cheek. You buried your face in his neck as the rhythm grew, your heart pounding wildly in your chest. You were flush to him, clinging, grinding, a desperate ache in every inch of your body.
“You feel good,” he growled softly, voice rough and needy.
You whimpered, clutching his shoulders as a shudder ran through you. Not quite release—but so close it ached.
Eventually, your hips stilled, breath catching in gasps. Sam’s arms wrapped around you tighter, holding you in place, his mouth brushing your temple.
“Good girl,” he whispered. “You’ve got a real talent for ridin’, y’know that?”
You laughed weakly, still pressed to him. “Is that gonna be part of the lessons now?”
Sam smiled against your hair. “Only if you keep showin’ up in that hat.”
And you would. Again and again. Because now you knew what it meant when a cowboy puts a hat on your head.
He means you’re his.

Hugo was happy to see his fellow mockingbird/apprentice in thievery. "When did you get here?"
Vivian blinks but she heard a familiar voice, turning to see Hugo standing there. "Hello there Hugo. I just got here a few moments ago. I was just getting settled into my new area over at the estate." she said.
"But I was not expecting to see you here too. Such time has gone by has it not?"

the Lost Boys blood bottle is so funny. To an 80s audience it might have looked fancy and ancient, but to a modern audience it looks like these vampires like to bedazzle things

i think all fledglings should need to nest with another vampire for at least their first few nights, before they get a coffin or separate sealed sleeping area of their own. it eases the sudden transition into a different circadian rhythm and helps them associate a closed environment with safety and sleep 🙂‍↕️

I'm sick of people using Armand's childhood trauma as a reason why being in a D/s relationship with Louis is inherently harmful. Lots of kinky people have experienced trauma, but that doesn't mean our kinky desires aren't valid and are harmful. In fact I think that Armand being able to overcome his trauma enough in order to have a D/s relationship with Louis is beautiful. So please try to be considerate of kinky people and don't assume that just because we've experienced trauma that means that seeking out kinky relationships is wrong. I can't express strongly enough how hard it can be on kinky people(especially Doms and subs) to not get to experience our desires. Power play is the most intense experience I've ever had, as well as the most fulfilling. Being without it can be agony. So to see the look on Armand's face when Louis offered to take control from him was amazing. I felt such a powerful bond with how he must have been feeling in that moment that it took my breath away. Which is why I find it so frustrating when people shit on their D/s relationship. Again, childhood trauma does not mean you can't have healthy kink relationships. Childhood trauma does not mean you can't have healthy kink relationships. I'll shout it from the rooftops and die on that hill.
