did we all forget that Ratio can hover for some reason
how. literally how is he doing that. why is he doing that? why does he never do it again
it does put a rather cute Ratiorine scene in my head though:
[occurs after Aventurine leaves the Nihility] [Aventurine and Ratio ran into each other, and decided to catch up in a more secluded area- think the hangar where Ratio hangs out for some reason. The blond stumbles] Aventurine, holding his temple: ack- my head.. Ratio, steadying him on instinct: Gambler- [Aventurine tries to wave him off with a strained smile, but Ratio keeps a firm- gentle- support on his elbows] Aventurine: I'm fine, doc. It was just a dizzy spell Ratio, scowling: Must I remind you that a 'dizzy spell'- as you put it- should not fall under the category of 'fine' [They go back and forth for a minute or two, before Ratio just scoffs and heaves Aventurine close to his chest. The blond stills just long enough for the doctor to get his feet in the air] Ratio: That's enough, Aventurine, really. Since you're apparently so averse to taking care of yourself, and clearly cannot be trusted to do it on your own, I suppose I will have to make you. We can 'catch up' another time. Aventurine: ...since when can you float-
#tried to make it cute then realized churin is allergic to feelings#y'all i need fanfiction on their little habits pls#hsr#honkai star rail#ratiorine#aventio#raturine#veritas ratio#dr ratio#aventurine#hsr aventurine

I'm having more Ratiorine thoughts. I just really like the idea of autistic Ratio, who knows how blunt he comes off to others and has long since "accepted" that it's the price he must pay for chasing the truth and teaching that truth to others, but in his heart he's always wished for someone who doesn't just tolerate his personality, but genuinely enjoys his company.
And Aventurine seems to like him well enough? Ratio thinks? Aventurine seems to seek him out when he has no need to and doesn't seem particularly bothered by Ratio's barbed comments or tsundere closed-off personality. And Ratio likes him. Likes his wit and his humor and his resourcefulness. But Ratio doesn't have a clue how to ask someone out lol. So he follows Aventurine around like a lost puppy, "conveniently" showing up at events where he knows Aventurine will be. Because he's been lying to himself for years: he was never fine with it. He craves at least a little positive human connection.
Just the idea of autistic Ratio letting himself want someone. Autistic Ratio actually confronting how he feels about the intimidation people feel towards him. Autistic Ratio admitting he feels lonely?

The art of subtle gentleness | Ratiorine Fic
Fandom: Honkai: Star Rail
Ship: Dr. Ratio/Aventurine, Ratiorine
Rating: G
Words: 1.343
Tags: Established Relationship, Caring, Domestic, Tags are hard, Affectionate Insults, POV Topaz
Summary: Ever since Aventurine and Ratio became a couple, the doctor's dreaded surprise visits have sent the entire IPC office into a panic. Topaz can't help but wonder how exactly the relationship between those two actually works. It teaches her a lesson about the fact that there is not only one love language in the world.
Preview:
The moment the door to Aventurine's office opened after the interastral video conference he had just attended, Topaz grabbed the lunch box which had been stored on her desk and made her way over to her co worker's room. They both had tight schedules, and she felt the urge to get rid of the food on her table rather sooner than later.
After all, it had been Dr. Ratio who had brought the lunch box, and Topaz had just been unlucky enough to be the first person he had met in the hallway when he had found Aventurine's door locked.
Ever since the doctor and the Stoneheart dated, the highly esteemed Dr. Veritas Ratio was a frequent guest in the IPC office’s headquarters - and a feared one. With his blunt words and fast and determined way of moving through the building, he had already scared a lot of lower-ranking IPC employees to the point where they had formed an emergency chatroom, just for sharing live-intel from the moment Ratio entered the building until he had finally left it, allowing them to get out of his way in time. Somehow, Topaz felt a tiny desire to join the group. Unfortunately, in her position, this was beyond the question.
“Are you free?” she asked when she peeked into Aventurine's office now. The blond man was typing something on his laptop, apparently busy as usual.
Upon hearing her voice, he looked up and gave her a bright smile. “For you, always.”
For a very long time, Topaz had despised answers like this one, convinced that they were nothing but disgusting sweet-talking from a man she would not have shown her bare back for even a single second. A while ago, however, she had had to admit that she had been wrong with this judgement. Aventurine actually liked her, maybe even considered her as something like a friend in his own special definition of the word, and while he surely was a complicated person, he was not a bad guy. Apparently, she still had to learn a thing or two about reading people.
“Great. I got something for you.” she said and entered the room. After the long video conference behind closed doors, it was filled with the scent of Aventurine's perfume.
“You really should open the window for a while, you'll get a headache.” she suggested, as usual wondering how he could endure the strong scent on a daily basis.
“Sure.” Aventurine took the hint, got up and opened the window behind him. In the meantime, she placed the lunch box on his desk.
“Seems like you forgot your food at home - again.” Topaz scolded him when he got back to his chair.
“Oh… Was he very mad?” Aventurine asked, immediately getting the point of all this. They both knew that Topaz did not care about his terrible eating habits, they were none of her business. What she - and everyone here - cared about were the consequences of his boyfriend showing up and disturbing the peace of their workday.
“Regular level, I'd say. He was in a rush, so the scolding I'm supposed to give to you is pretty tame.”
She left the exact words unspoken though, since they both knew the content. It would traditionally be about carelessness and recklessness and a lack of self-preservation, depending on what exactly had caused his visit.
Aventurine gave her another smile, this time clearly apologetic.
“I'll make sure to apologize properly. Thank you for delivering the message.” he said, and Topaz sighed.
Aventurine opened the lunch box. The food inside was arranged in a meticulous way, and it looked both healthy and tasty.
“Did he make this for you?” she asked. Usually, she did not talk much about private things with Aventurine, but somehow, she was curious. It was just so hard to imagine the harsh doctor standing in the kitchen, carefully preparing a lunch box so perfect that it might as well be sold in the upscale luxury supermarket next door, for his partner.
“Yes, he did.” Aventurine confirmed. “We take turns with this, but I fear that mine never look as perfect as his.”
When Aventurine looked up at Topaz, he suddenly had to laugh, which was earning him a surprised look from her.
“What's with that shrug? Is it so hard to believe that I am capable of making edible food?”
She looked back at him, confused for a moment before she got the misunderstanding.
“No, that's not it.” she said. This man was lucky with anything he touched, he could probably just throw various stuff together and accidentally create a tasty meal with it.
“I just find it hard to imagine that your doctor would do something like this. Something so… I don't know how to put it… so gentle, I guess.”

Something Sweet for Someone... Sweet?
Prompt: Strawberries
TW/CW: Aventio/Ratiorine <3, a little suggestive, barely proofread and I appreciate spellchecks!
Word Count: 804
A/N: This is my apology for making Aventurine's fic so sad, lol. I have no idea where this would fall in canon but I really like the Aventio dynamic, so I thought it would be kinda nice to explore that when the world's not. On Fire. Also, Ruan Mei 🤝 Dr. Ratio "Genius being bothered by their partner while they're trying to work."
Likes and Reblogs appreciated (reblogs > likes) and Requests are Open! Read this story on Ao3 here!

Syllabus writing was already hard enough as it was. Well, maybe not hard, but time consuming, for sure. And that was just when Veritas was on his own. Now he had a peacock draped across one of the couches in his office, stretched out with a self-satisfied smile and a box of... something sweet on his chest. Vertias knew that asking what Aventurine had would just prove to be more of a distraction, plus he trusted his nose enough to be satisfied that it was some strawberry flavored something or other. And he was perfectly satisfied with his tea, thank you very much.
And as if he was psychic--as Aventurine often seemed--the gambler swung himself up into a sitting position only to melt over the back of the couch. "Last call for a treat, Doctor," he nearly yawned, holding the box out in Ratio's general direction. "You're really going to let me eat this whole thing all by myself?"
"I have tea." Ratio mumbles, lifting his cup then setting it down.
Aventurine sat higher on the couch, trying to peer into that mug without getting up. "Yeah you have it, but you haven't had any. That thing's basically full. Is it even warm still?"
Aeons, he sounded like his students... "You brought those sweets. I assumed that they were for you." He pushed his reading glasses higher up his nose with the end of his pen.
"You think I'd be that selfish?"
Ratio lifted his head from his work, brows raised and eyes narrowed. Aventurine just smiled at him.
He got up from the couch and fixed his coattails, preening himself all nice before striding over to Ratio's desk. He nudged a stack of heavy books aside and perched himself where they were, completely disregarding the mumbled protest from Ratio. "Come on, just try one at least? I don't want this visit to have been for nothing."
"If I have one, will you let me finish my work?"
"Just try it and we can go from there." Aventurine reached into the box and pulled out a single strawberry, dipped almost all the way to the top in a rich looking chocolate with a pink drizzle of more chocolate around the sides. "Here. These ones are the sweetest."
Ratio cocked an eyebrow as he reached for the strawberry. "Where did you even get these?" Before his fingers could close around it, Aventurine tugged it back just out of reach. Veritas could see the mischief shining in those violet eyes. "What are you planning?"
He smiled that stupid smile that made the back of Vertias' neck hot. This is going to be ridiculous.
"Well, since you seem so busy," Aventurine lulled his head to the side, so coy and relaxed he's almost boneless, "maybe you should keep working. And I can just feed it to you."
The heat spread to Veritas' face. "Aventurine."
"What? It's just a suggestion!" He cried, holding his hands up in the most insincere surrender, strawberry still pinched between two fingers. "You're acting like I'm offering something crass!"
"I repeat the question--" Ratio shoved his glasses up onto the crown of his head "--If I let you do this, will you let me keep working?"
Aventurine huffed and rolled his eyes. Always so full of theatrics... "Yes, yes, if you let me feed you a strawberry I'll let you get back to..." he leaned over and tilted his head, staring down his nose at the papers in front of Ratio. They were all handwritten and... nigh unreadable. "Jeez, talk about chicken scratch, Doc..."
"They're syllabus notes," he huffed, turning straight in his chair. "Come now, let's get this over with."
"You like spending time with me."
Veritas didn't dignify that jab with the obvious affirmative. He just got back to work and waited for Aventurine to play his silly game. They both knew, of course, that this was not what the Stoneheart had in mind when he offered to feed Ratio by hand, but beggars can't be choosy, he supposed.
Aventurine crossed one leg over the other and held the little chocolate close enough to Ratio's head so he could just turn and take a bite on his own time. "Here you go, Doctor."
Veritas mumbled a sound that barely sounded like a thank you and took a bite. The chocolate was decently dark, but he was more into bitter chocolate anyways. And whatever that pink chocolate was, it had a nice, delicate flavour that balanced out the bitterness perfectly, especially with the sweet strawberry underneath it all.
"Hm."
"Like it?" Aventurine chimed, tilting his head all the way to the side to try and meet Ratio's sunset eyes again.
"Yes."
"Want some more?" He shook the box gently, just so the remaining confections would make some noise.
"...Yes, alright."

Shipping preferences
Here is a list of character pairings I enjoy and seek out in fanwork, pairings I like but don't seek out fanworks of, and also those I'm neutral of or don't enjoy. This does not mean that you're not allowed to ship those pairings, my word isn't law and honestly, I don't care what you ship as long as you don't force it onto people. Respect my ships and I respect yours.
As a queer person, many of the ships I mention will be m/m, f/f or poly. The little heteronormative ships I mentioned also are most likely bi4bi or t4t in my headcanon. It's just what I enjoy and not in any case against people that ship straight ships.
All my ships are switch ships, I do not have an inherent preference for any particular top/bottom dynamic. Though I do lean towards one at times, it is not to an extend that would make me dislike interacting with the counterpart. I moreso have opinions on dominant/submissive parts in the ships.
Ships I seek content of:
Genshin Impact:
Haikavehtham | Kaveh/Alhaitham
Love to see fics about their fallout as well as their reconcilation arc and everything in-between that. Them coping with the loss of each other is one of my favourite things to talk about. I have no particular preference in the dom/sub for them, I believe they'd switch but also I like it when Alhaitham takes care of Kaveh (in and outside the bedroom).
Thomato | Ayato/Thoma
I enjoy master/servant ships, I am a simple person. I love exploring their emotional worlds throughout different scenarios and the unwavering loyalty Thoma has to Ayato. Given this loyalty, Thoma is usually the submissive one in my head, though I also enjoy him relieving Ayato of some stress at times.
Cynari | Cyno/Tighnari
First ship that sold me to the game, really. I love the found family aspect that it comes with through Collei being their daughter of sorts. Tighnari being a biologist opens a lot of fun possibilities that make everything possible. They're cute, have known each other since school days — I adore a good childhood friends to lovers. The reason I don't enjoy it as much as Haikaveh is due to them being incredibly fluffy in comparison. And I love angst more.
Candehya | Candace/Dehya
Love them, absolutely adore them. My favourite sapphics. I just think that they'd end up bonding more and more and boom something happens. Add Dunyazard to the mix at times and let them be a throuple, honestly.
Laylou | Layla/Nilou
Extrovert/Introvert dynamics are amazing. And energetic/exhausted even more so. THEY'RE UNDERRATED!!! Pls Pls Pls more of them, I'm begging. They're giving me so many thoughts, will I voice them, ever? Probably not.
Fillei | Fischl/Collei
I need happiness for these two kids. Collei went through so much and feels awkward socialising. She needs an unashamed yapper in her life. Which can be both positive and negative!! I just love Collei a lot :(
Honkai: Star Rail
Ratiorine | Dr. Ratio/Aventurine
They make me ill. You can make so many irrational decisions and suck them up to Aventurine's anxiety of never having been in a healthy relationship — I need more of this!! Dr. Ratio making Aventurine realise that he is worthy of being loved. Also, I lied, I prefer top!Ratio for this one for the simple reason of Aventurine needing to be worshiped and me thinking that allowing someone to be this close to him would show a big part of the trust that they're putting into their relationship and how much he trusts Ratio in not hurting him. Still, I can see reasons for the reverse and it doesn't bother me to see it.
Mozeqiu | Moze/Jiaoqiu
Look (like Jiaoqiu can't), there's just something about them. It hooked me, their quests hooked me for all eternity. Jiaoqiu trusts Moze so much and Moze feels guilty for not being fast enough. Aaaah, I just like them and Feixiao being their sapphic bestie idk.
HertaMei | Herta/Ruan Mei
Two geniuses,,, I want to see their ideals clash like their lips do. I just,,, need them. There's so much potential in them. There's so much to look into for them because the psychology of two geniuses is just so complex in the two of them.
Ships I like but don't seek content of:
Genshin Impact:
ZhongZhu | Zhongli/Baizhu
An ex of mine brought them to my attention and I can see it. There's just something interesting to me about them. I do not fully know how to explain it right now.
Cylou | Cyno/Nilou
I blame my twitter mutuals for making me have any interest in the ship in the first place. Not OTP material but cute nonetheless.
Fremika | Freminet/Mika
They bond over having too high expectations of themselves. Used to be obsessed with it when Fontaine dropped but have less interest in it by now.
Xiaother | Xiao/Aether
Only traveler ship outside of Jeht/Lumine that I enjoy (okay, maybe I like Lyney/Aether too). Them bonding over the time we've seen them and Aether obviously trusting Xiao is just... oh it warms my heart.
XiaoVen | Xiao/Venti
WHAT DO YOU MEAN VENTI CAN EASE XIAO'S PAIN???!?!?!?!!?
Honkai: Star rail
Jadepaz | Jade/Topaz
Okay, this ship is kind of a mixed bag for me. I do not like it when people act like Jade is some sort of saving grace for Topaz, it's simply not the case. But to me that is what makes it so interesting. Topaz obviously looks up to her! And Jade definitely can use that to her advantage. They are kinda unhealthy and that is actually what I enjoy about them.
Sunturine | Sunday/Aventurine
Another case of them being unhealthy makes them interesting. If only the fandom was less annoying. I do not condone what Sunday did to Aventurine, and perhaps them being my faves is part of why I kinda ship them, but I like to explore the psychology behind them being unhealthy. The ship doesn't have to be romantic in nature for that.
Screwtio | Screwllum/Dr. Ratio
Interesting to think about because of their clashing yet similar ideals. Also given that Screwllum is a Genius Society member it is interesting to me.
Galladay | Gallagher/Sunday
Their Jesus/Judas parallels are awesome! I just have no deep connection to Gallagher at the current time.
General things I like:
master/servant and its (dis)loyality and power dynamics
the psychology behind the characters in unhealthy ships
childhood friends to lovers
pining
Ships/Themes I avoid:
Kaeluc | Kaeya/Diluc: Incest as well as pseudo incest is something that makes me uncomfortable. I personally prefer their dynamic as brothers and do not want to see them shipped at all
m/f ships, many of their fandoms tend to be full of queerphobes and I lack myself in the want to engage with them (neuvifuri is one example of this)
ZhongXiao | Zhongli/Xiao: actually an interesting dynamic. The issue? Xiao looks so incredibly young and the friend that got me into the game had gotten me hooked on their father/son-esque relationship. I just fail to shake it off, but Zhongli/any other yaksha works fine to me.
Adding onto the point above: It is rare that I ship characters with different types of models. Tall and medium male just look such deeply different ages that I couldn't enjoy it myself outside of trying to study the psychology behind the unhealthiness of it. Tall and medium female model have similar issues but here it depends more on how the character is presented over all for me. I do not know why that is, exactly.
I can find many themes to be worth exploring, it heavily depends on how the themes are explored in the work and how they're presented in the grand scheme of things, so I won't say too much to what I dislike as it simply depends a lot of the times.

i had to think about this for a bit, it's such an interesting prompt for a crossover. it's gotten longer than i expected so i'll put it under 😅
1. HaiKaveh in HSR
lore-wise, they'd be following the path of Erudition. i think it suits both of them as they're both accomplished scholars in genshin. but their path will diverge.
since alhaitham strikes me as someone that ultimately pursues knowledge because he wants to have that in his repertoire, so he'll be acknowledged by Nous and joined the Genius Society. he is still a kind man at heart, so he will probably still do good with his knowledge.
kaveh, on the other hand, will be in the Intelligentsia Guild, because he actively wants to help humanity. he'll probably be researching the terrain of most, if not all, habitable planets and how to build the best infrastructure, along with residential and business areas for the locals. he's definitely one of the few people ratio would respect and work with.
gameplay-wise, i somehow envision alhaitham being a quantum unit. he has a single-minded focus on achieving his goals, so maybe the path of the Hunt would be suitable. his chiseled mirror fragments remind me of seele's ultimate in a way.
for kaveh, he'll be either on the path of Harmony. he's passionate and bold, so i think his element would either be lightning or fire. i can't really decide between those elements. his skill does remind me of ratio's follow-up attack animation, with the structured lights and rigid lines.
2. RatioRine in Genshin
lore-wise, weirdly enough, i think they'll both be in Sumeru.
ratio might be from Fontaine and moved there because, obviously, the Akademiya. i imagine he'll graduate from Kshahrewar because three of his degrees are in mathematics, physics, and engineering. i have no doubt he will also somehow either graduated from Amurta (for his biology and medicine degrees) and Vahumana (for his natural theology and philosophy degrees) or get certificates and licenses from those darshans.
aventurine though, would be from the deserts of Sumeru. i don't know if he'll be in the Fatui as a Harbinger (as he is one of the Ten Stonehearts of IPC) but his tribe would probably be at conflict with the Eremites. maybe sold as a slave to Snezhnaya? i want him to be happy but he wouldn't be who he is in HSR if he didn't go through all those horrible things in his childhood (╥﹏╥)
gameplay-wise, ratio would be a bow user (his chalk-throwing has 100% accuracy and he's definitely great with long-range weapons) but his Vision depends on whether it'll be lore accurate or not. a dendro vision for his pursuit of knowledge, the truth, and wisdom or a geo vision for his stubbornness and sense of justice (for how he wants everyone to have equal opportunity to pursue knowledge) (and yes, the geo vision is if his story follows HSR in that he isn't acknowledged by the literal Aeon of knowledge).
i want aventurine to receive his anemo vision after he got rid of his owner, as a literal manifestation of his freedom. i can't imagine him wanting to fight in close ranges so i think he'll be a catalyst user? or maybe also a bow user. maybe his fighting style would resemble wanderer's with how he elevates himself off the ground with his Vision. or maybe he'll be like sucrose and attack more than one enemy at a time.
anyway, yeah, that's all i got for now. it'll be interesting to read an isekai-like fic for either of them and how they adapt to everything in the strange new place they're stuck to.
I’ve seen quite a few pieces of art surrounding the AU, and the AU just intrigues me to the point of hilarity, because in my mind Ratio would’ve inherited his Tsundere tendencies from Kaveh and probably got into sculpting via his dad(/mom) being an architect and gotten his build from Alhaitham and the research side from him
It also intrigues me in what would happen in a full crossover (Kaveh and Alhaitham in HSR/Ratio (and possibly Aventurine) in GI)
Like, would Ratio’s Vision if he was in GI be Geo? (the sculptures being his constructs) What would that mean if we bring Aventio in to it? Would Aventurine’s Vision be Anemo or Geo as well?
HSR doesn’t have a plant-based element so Haikaveh’s elements would have to change. What paths would they be? Like, would Kaveh be Harmony or Erudition? Would Alhaitham be Hunt? (I’m not actually suggesting these as their paths.)
#honkai star rail#hsr#genshin impact#ratiorine#golden ratio#haikaveh#lots of ideas but i can't articulate them well#i hope this is at least comprehensible 🥲

Just a game | Ratiorine Fic
Fandom: Honkai: Star Rail
Ship: Dr. Ratio/Aventurine, Ratiorine
Rating: G
Words: 16.270
Tags: Fake/Pretend Relationship, Aventurine is a menace, Dancing, Insecurity, Guilt, POV alternating, Other additional tags to be added
Summary: On a whim, Aventurine offers to play Ratio's “partner” at a party. However, when the doctor actually accepts the offer, the whole affair quickly takes on unexpected proportions - and forces both men to ask themselves some uncomfortable questions about themselves and how they actually see each other.
Preview:
If there is anything Aventurine detests about being a man in a high social position it is the occasional requirement to take part in official ‘parties’. The need to wear his stuffy, formal IPC attire, the forced friendly small talk with incredibly dull but important people - it is nothing but boring to him. However, there are different sub-categories of those events, and the one he finds himself a part of right now must be the worst of them all. He does not mind the speeches about topics he has no idea about and no interest in - after all, it is easy to just not listen and take a discreet close look at the people around instead. He does not mind the unfriendly gazes on him - he is used to them. No, what really rubs him the wrong way is the “plus-one” character of the event. It is for those with friends and family and not for those who get avoided by the people around them like they carried some sort of infectious disease. Tonight, it feels like a place for everyone but him.
When checking the guest list before his arrival, Aventurine had placed most of his hopes in one of the names on there. ‘Dr. Veritas Ratio, scientist’ it had read, and seeing that name had made him quite happy. He liked Ratio. He was one of the very few people that did not make him feel like he was not welcome to even talk to them, and he had a refreshingly sharp tongue and never minced his words. It made it interesting to talk to him. Plus, he was handsome. Very much so, even. And since he was a pretty solitary man, he was one of the very few people which usually showed up alone during occasions like this.
Unfortunately, tonight turns out to be an exception from this rule. Ratio is in fact not alone. He is with a woman Aventurine does not know. This leaves him alone with his ennui and a glass of champagne which constantly gets refilled by observant employees as soon as it is threatening to go empty. It is not the healthiest of combinations, and probably the main reason for the fateful decision he is about to take right now.
Aventurine takes a look around. Ratio and the woman are standing a little bit away from him. From his angle, he can almost only see Ratio’s broad back. He looks good in his formal suit, even from behind. Firm and determined. Unfortunately, his frame covers the woman almost completely. The only thing Aventurine can see is that she is wearing a very classic, but high quality dress, and that she has long and dark hair which she wears open. He is also too far away to hear them speak, so he decides that it is time for a little change in perspective.
There is a buffet table close to them, and although Aventurine is not hungry, he takes the excuse to get a better look and heads over. At the table, he unwillingly picks out the smallest bit of food he can find there and slowly starts nibbling on it. At the same time, he discreetly turns around again.
Much better, he thinks. He is still a little too far away to hear them, but at least he can now get a proper look. The first thing he notices is that the woman is significantly older than Ratio. She looks well-maintained and confident about herself. Aventurine does not have an eye for women, but he assumes she could be considered beautiful.
He lets his gaze wander to Ratio, and interesting enough, the doctor looks pretty annoyed. It might make him a bad person, but Aventurine feels a little relieved, although he is not even really sure as to why this is the case.
As usual, Ratio’s voice is loud and his intonation is very pronounced, so Aventurine is lucky enough to catch a tiny part of what he is saying:
“How many more times do I have to tell you that I am not interested in consulting a dating agency?”
Now, that is intriguing , Aventurine thinks. So the woman is not his date? He takes another close look. There is something familiar about her looks. Is it the way her dark hair curls? Is it the look of steadfast determination in her intelligent eyes? Could it be?
Almost unintentionally, he steps even closer to be able to hear the woman's reply:
“Your father and I are just worried about you, Veritas! You cannot just live for your career. You need a partner. You're not getting younger, and with that stubborn personality of yours… well. So if you cannot give me any valuable arguments against it, I expect to see you at that dating party next week, and I expect you to treat the young ladies you meet there with the utmost courtesy and respect!”
“I…” Aventurine has never seen the honourable Doctor Veritas Ratio at a loss for words before, and the sight is priceless. He can almost hear his thoughts, the way he desperately looks for something the woman - his mother , quite obviously - might accept as a ‘valuable argument’, but the look in his eyes tells him that he fails. Turns out even eight doctoral degrees are not enough against the power of a worried mother.
It is quite fascinating. Intriguing, even. Like one of those TV dramas which you initially think would be completely irrelevant to you, only for them to turn out to be too good to want to miss the continuation. Aventurine wants to be a part of this, and his mind, which is by now undoubtedly more than just a little clouded by the alcohol he has had, throws caution to the wind and just lets him get into action.

Summary: There are things Aventurine isn't able to talk about with anyone, not even Ratio, and there are things Ratio wants to know about Aventurine but is afraid to ask. On a stormy night, they both work hard in their own ways to reduce the unwanted distance between them.

The moment the first lightning cuts through the darkness of the night and illuminates the bedroom is also the moment Aventurine finally abandons his last hope of finding any sleep.
He has been lying on his bed for hours now, with his eyes wide open, constantly staring at the ceiling without actually seeing anything at all.
It feels a little unfair. He really has tried everything to exhaust himself. Has spent half of his day with tedious paperwork he usually leaves to his subordinates. Has even taken it upon him to actually write those stupid reports instead of dictating them to his phone like he usually does, fully aware that he is the slowest writer around. Ratio once told him that it is because he learnt how to write pretty late and that he only needs some more practice, but most of the time he is just too busy to make time for this. Or maybe too lazy, like the doctor blames him to be. Anyway, it is nothing he does voluntarily on a normal day.
Today, however, is not a normal day, and since even ten pages of reports were not enough to bring him closer to the prospect of sleep, he also tried the opposite approach and went to the gym where he trained until every fibre of his body cried in pain. It only helped to make him feel hungry and miserable, but there was no way he was gonna grant himself the nutrients necessary to build up new energy afterwards. No - after all, the plan was to go home and turn dead to the world the moment his head hit the pillow.
Of course it didn’t work, and he should have known this. Even with his muscles shaking, his stomach growling and his head spinning from the way he maltreated himself, Aventurine just could not bring himself to close his eyes. The moment he tried to do it, the pictures in his head started to go crazy, leaving him unsure if sleep was something to desire or to dread. The moment he heard the first drops of rain hitting his window, the scales tipped into the direction of ‘dread’. The moment he saw the lightning, he knew it was over.
There it was, his ‘blessing’, Aventurine thought bitterly. Gaiathra Triclops had graced his people with a heavy downpour not unlike this one the day he was born, making him and his good fortune a ray of hope for their suppressed and ill-fated tribe. Even now, so many years later, in nights like this, Aventurine cannot find a single positive thing this blessing ever brought him.
