I read one Wiki page so don't yell at me if I got anything wrong. Tbh, I don't really like how this fic turned out but it's been sitting in my drafts for years.

"The musician and prophet Orpheus fell in love with the beautiful Eurydice, only for her to die shortly after. Thus, he journeyed into the Underworld to plead with Hades to bring his beloved back. His wish was granted - but on the condition that he must not look back at Eurydice until they were both back in the land of the living. But Orpheus couldn't resist one glance, and Eurydice was lost to him forever."

"Boo, you're no fun. Minus ten points," he hears you whine. The sounds of a book being tossed carelessly aside as ink-stained papers filled with formulas slide forward and brush against the sleeves of his arm. All are pushed away to allow you to sprawl your upper body over the desk so you can mope and continue to avoid doing any actual work. He can feel your gaze on him, patiently waiting for him to look up from his notes and give you attention, yet he continues to write making you huff in annoyance.

You're both supposed to be working on your assignments, so he has excellent reason to keep ignoring you to focus on his work. If anything, he should be annoyed at you, and he is, but it's a testament to how much he's come to tolerate you that he doesn't immediately get up and leave. Or deal with you in another, less unsavory way. Instead, he flips back through the pages of his notebook. A list of collected components of spare parts of a vast machine and smaller notes of their possible working principles and manufacturing processes. Diagrams and sketches of their possible construction and engines filled with footnotes and annotations. Not all of them are in his writing. He wouldn't dare use that atrocious shade of yellow that you seem to love so much.

"Can't we do anything else? I'm bored out of my minddd," you stretch the words out, effectively cutting his concentration in half with nothing but the sound of your voice. He can feel his eye twitch and his pencil's wood creaking from the pressure he's slowly exerting onto it. Your voice is muffled, which means you haven't picked yourself off the table yet, probably hunched over with your cheek against the table that will take another hour for you to pry yourself back up again. He can't wait for his future headache with your complaints about back problems, even though you're killing your own spine and his head. The sound of a pencil rolling back and forth fills the silence, and that's the last of his patience. He slams his notebook down, the pencil bouncing and dropping onto the floor, and the clattering of wood causes his frown to etch deeper. He re-opens his notebook to the page of the Khaenri'ahn machines found in Devantaka Mountain. There's an annoying doodle of a Ruin Hunter in the corner mocking him right back.

"Work."

His clipped voice has you quiet down. It's a good thing you have some sense of preservation and know that even though he indulges you frequently, there are only so many distractions he will let slip through. But the resounding sound of a chair scraping against the floor, papers being shuffled, and your footsteps tell him you're equally frustrated. He thinks he hears you mutter "rigid oaf" under your breath as your footsteps grow fainter. The silence should put him at ease, but it only serves to irate him further since you're the one who's causing him trouble when he just wants to work in peace and quiet. The worst thing about this situation is that he knows you'll refuse to talk to him unless he apologizes first for something he hasn't done wrong. But alas.

He lets out a deep sigh that sounds twice his age. Puspa Café should still be open at this time. If he leaves now, he can still catch up to you. With a sweep of the arm, he quickly gathers his papers haphazardly but still slides them into their rightful places between the meticulous sections of his notebook.

"Would you look back?"

He pauses when your voice sounds behind him unexpectedly. You sound a mixture of cheeky and skeptical, but the drumming of your fingertips against the back of his chair tells him that you are genuinely curious about his response. Maybe even a bit nervous to ask him such a ridiculous question too.

"The fatal flaw of Orpheus is he never stopped to consider the psychological cost of Hade's offer. To think "Do not look back" is an impossible sentence to think without simultaneously speaking the opposite. Every time you repeat, "I must not look back," you are forced to say: "Look back." But that is the weakness of the human mind," is the answer he supplies. He thumbs at the edges of his notebook, worn from all the years he's opened it but still in pristine condition. He doesn't like his things to be dirty. It makes his skin crawl.

"What? Are you above the human mind now? So you wouldn't be tempted at all?" you say with a hint of dumbfoundedness. He's sure you think that he won't give you an actual answer.

"No."

His answer is short but firm. He won't look back. He won't be Orpheus and lose his Eurydice so easily to temptation. His finger moves and tips the cover open, papers flipping until they stop in the middle of the book. Frantic scribbles of ink of his research on the rare disease of Elezar. He thumbs the page's corner until it creases.

"Hey, look at me."

The next page is on segments.

"Why won't you look at me."

The final page is on dreams.

""Please look at me Zandik."

He closes the notebook.

"I thought Orpheus couldn't hear Eurdicye."

He hears you laugh at his unempathetic reply. It's a hallow imitation. Then silence. It always ends like this. His mind dangling what he needs most only to take it away, making him question if you are even still there behind him. Just one look. Just one look to confirm what's behind him but he won't. He won't be a fool like Orpheus. Not until he's finished. So he does what he always has, removes any option he hates, and creates his own means.

He blinks awake slowly. The white ceiling of his laboratory stares at him back and the first thing his mind registers is that it's cold. His hand automatically moves to his side only to meet air. That's right, you're not here anymore. You haven't been here for years. The manifestation of the withering caused dark hardened scales to grow across your limbs. Slowly numbing the affected areas until you couldn't walk anymore, which progressed into fatigue and progressive nerve damage. Your last days were spent asleep in a coma surrounded by as many Nilotpala Lotuses as he could find. He closes his eyes again, but the sound of the heavy steel door grates against his nerves before he has the time to truly relax.

"You know you'll never succeed. You know why. Even if this one doesn't die, it won't be the same."

The voice isn't right. Another failure.

Dottore lifts his head to see your segment standing in front of him. That's correct. He can already see the beginnings of scales on the segment's arms. It's funny. He is capable of creating physical carbon copy segments of himself from different stages of his life and yet you, the outlier, it's never the same. A body is made, and a piece of his memories of you acts as the brain, but it's never the same. He knows why. It's because his memories of you are dying. His dreams are getting shorter, and fuzzier around the edges. He used to dream of seeing you, holding you, and he knows the next time he dreams of you, he may not hear your voice anymore. His own segment thoughts echo in his mind. Don't you think this is a waste of materials and time? It's time to give up. They don't understand, they can't dream.

He won't look back because he knows that as soon as he does, he will never dream of you again. Even if the next dream takes away your voice, the next takes away your presence, until he's left with a void of nothing. Even then, he won't look back. He has only dreamed of you every single night, regardless of anything. These are the only things he has left of you. Everything else was taken, stolen, or burnt. He isn't sure if the person he's constantly dreaming of now is actually you or a figment of his imagination that's begging to be free. But he won't let you go.

My doleful aria, tell me that story again tonight.

Chapter 39: Machine, Monster, and Man

The December air carries the bite of deepening winter—Snowdown festivities have already begun in the upper districts, their distant lights twinkling like stars in the cool, dimming light of evening. Dr Granet’s conservative estimation of his prognosis had been right about this, at least: he would likely see this year’s winter celebration. It’s hard to say this milestone feels like a victory, however, with the shimmer mingling with his blood as it races through his veins. His heart is an overwound clock, stalling out.

Five to thirty-six—five to thirty-six—five to thirty-six weeks.

These estimations mean nearly nothing now, not with their work having certainly stalled the threat. For all they have done, though, they have no sense of what the future truly holds.

Viktor pulls his coat tighter against the chill. He sits in the large porthole of his familiar haunt by the reservoir, where the water runs oil-slick, watching the mesmerising surface. The journal of his private observations lies open on his lap, notes half-finished. His mind has drifted to Ekko’s tree, the crystals, and his own death—a neighbour growing bolder each day.

Though synthetic crystal manufacturing has ceased—Mel’s environmental investigation forced the Council’s hand months ago—the damage persists. In the silence of the factories, Camille Ferros’s anger simmers, but Viktor has been too consumed by treatments to follow the political theatre closely. Even he knows bureaucratic investigations have limits, and he doesn’t trust the Council to fully stop Clan Ferros, regardless of their findings. Down in those abandoned facilities, he still senses something deeper at work. The arcane frays, the suspected wild rune continuing to destabilise everything around it. Both home and body resist intervention, clinging to their disease with the tenacity of something that knows no other way to exist.

Between his recent struggles and the Undercity, Viktor sees a clear parallel. Both are fighting against forces that were set in motion long ago, both existing in a state of constant adaption for survival, never truly thriving. And yet, neither has given up.

“Thought I’d find you here.”

Viktor turns, eyebrows raised in question, to see Jayce emerging from the shadowed depths of the abandoned building. He bears a metal thermos in each hand and a thick blanket tucked under one arm, breath visible in small puffs in the winter air. Viktor closes his notebook, sliding it between himself and the curved wall as Jayce approaches with that familiar, apologetic smile.

“Brought you sweetmilk,” Jayce offers, settling beside him and draping the blanket across both their laps with a casual flourish. He’s learnt to anticipate Viktor’s needs, even ones he’s not voiced—perhaps even especially the ones he doesn’t voice. The blanket is the same one Jayce had foisted upon him the day he’d met Violet, Jinx, and Ekko down by the wharfs, its weight now familiar and welcome. It’s warm from Jayce’s body heat, and Viktor finds himself grateful for both the gesture and the company.

Viktor accepts the thermos, unscrewing the lid to breathe in the scent of vanilla and anise. The metal is warm against his palms, heated by the liquid within. “What’s got you so deep in thought?” Jayce asks, his voice gentle as he settles more comfortably against Viktor’s side.

“Ekko’s tree, actually.”

“Ah.” Jayce’s response carries the weight of understanding. “The tree.” He doesn’t immediately pivot to solutions or reassurances. Instead, he settles more deeply beside Viktor and follows his gaze out over the city.

Viktor can just make out the cleft of the fissures in the lower part of Piltover, where the buildings grow slightly more ramshackle for their proximity to the Undercity. He imagines the tree down there, somewhere, surrounded by people like Ekko—resilient, primed with the audacity and drive to take the life they’ve been given and make it into something more.

“Do you think we were too late?” Viktor finally asks. The question encompasses more than just the tree, and they both know it.

“Ekko says the tree’s not getting worse.” The consolation is a small comfort. Jayce picks his next words carefully. “And we’re making progress with your treatments.” One of Jayce’s hands works small circles into the tight muscle at the juncture of Viktor’s neck and shoulder. Viktor resists the urge to shrug him off, deliberately reminding himself to allow this contact and relax. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes, letting just a fraction of tension escape under the insistence of Jayce’s hands. “And the micro-dosing seems to be holding firm—things are a bit… different, but you’re stable. That’s something worth celebrating.”

Viktor’s laugh is sharp, brittle. He pulls away now to turn and fix Jayce with an irritated look. “Maintaining isn’t enough. I didn’t leave everything behind to celebrate ‘not getting worse’, Jayce.”

“You haven’t left anything behind.”

“Haven’t I?” Despite the many years of partnership, he and Jayce have not spoken much about his life before the academy, especially not the things that could have been. “I walked away from the only education the Undercity has to offer to attend a prestigious academy where the mere mention of my home taints the mood. I breathe clean air when the people I grew up alongside choke. I have had access to procedures they will never hope to receive. And now I should be satisfied with mere survival?”

He sets his thermos down, his stomach too unsettled to accept what is normally a small comfort.

“I am tired of everyone telling me to be grateful for what I have when it is so little,” Viktor says, voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. “For the academy, for the position as Heimerdinger’s assistant, and now, this.”

Jayce’s face softens, his brow furrowing with an emotion Viktor can’t quite place—something between hurt and understanding.

“That’s not what I meant, V.” Jayce shifts where he sits, their knees touching. “I just meant that we’ve made progress. Real progress. That doesn’t mean we’re stopping here.”

“I know.” Viktor sighs, willing his body to uncoil. “I know that is not what you meant.” His fingers find a desiccated vine beside him, worrying at it until the stem begins to peel apart. “I am not… ungrateful. But I cannot help but think of all the time wasted—all those years I spent believing I had to accept my limitations because that is simply ‘how the world works’.”

“Maybe,” Jayce begins with care, “it’s not about accepting or refusing limitations. Maybe it’s about understanding them well enough to work with them, instead of against.”

Viktor considers this, watching as Jayce reaches for his thermos. Steam escapes as he unscrews the cap, but Jayce takes a sip and seems to relish the heat. Then, Jayce reaches out and taps the spine of the notebook still wedged between Viktor and the wall. “What’s this?”

“A… journal, of sorts,” Viktor answers carefully, pulling the thin volume out. He considers the unassuming cover, aware suddenly of how much weight this small volume carries. Weeks of internal observations he’s never voiced aloud—the grinding fatigue, the sharp flares of frustration, the anger at himself for hoping. All the ugly, inconvenient truths of their work, catalogued in these pages like evidence of his unravelling.

Revealing the contents now feels like cutting his chest open so Jayce can examine his heart, an unthinkable vulnerability—but to hold back would be tantamount to lying—and he won’t lie. Not to Jayce.

“I have been recording,” Viktor begins, his voice catching slightly, “feelings, states. Things I…” He swallows. “Things I have not been able to say aloud.”

When he extends the notebook toward Jayce, keeping his hand steady requires an inordinate amount of concentration.

Sarroora's Art and Fanfiction Update

I feel really guilty guys for being so late updating you all on what I’ve been doing art and writing-wise!

I don't want to come across as making excuses, but I admit I’m very, very preoccupied with the collapsing economy in my country - as we’re literally free-falling from what you’d call middle class…

Case in point, our pound has dropped 47.60 to 1 USD. This will only slip further down into catastrophic inflation if no major reforms are made.

And then there’s the genocide happening right next door to our neighbors in Palestine literally kilometers away.

This all really affects your work, mental state and priorities.

Anyway, here’s a summary of A)the projects I've been working on, and B)what I’m getting back into slowly:

Projects I’ve been working on the past months:

I got a spot at a bazaar in early March, at a university. It was a lotta work but a very good experience. I was so touched by the students’ feedback on my designs - they genuinely liked most of them. The stickers and sketchbooks were especially popular

Illustration, patterns and and design for stationery and general-use items e.g Notebooks, sketchbooks, mugs, keychains, coasters, stickers, etc. Some of the manufacturing I have to delegate to the professionals with the machines necessary. Other stuff I’m finally beginning to do myself to save cost. Like stickers and sketchbooks. However, I’m making veeery small quantities, coz I’m not selling much. Everyone is struggling financially

Once I’ve figured out international shipping, I might be able to offer great pricing, especially if you have a good currency. A 28-page, A5 80gsm blank sketchbook may end up costing around $1.5-$2, which I hear is much cheaper than say, buying it from a general stationery store in the US

However the trick is to figure out how to make shipping cheap so that it’s worth it!

On a fanfiction-related note, I’ve begun writing Chapter 3 of the sequel of my Detroit: Become Human fanfic, The Only Truth that Sticks. FINALLY. I've missed writing it so much. The working title (so far) is A Graveyard of Connors. Consider that a hint.

Cleaning up a few things in my Top Cat fanfic, Cats Gangs and Leaders, and migrating it slowly to AO3.

Headcanons // Billy Kid [Pre-Release, CBT2]

Billy is about as old as he appears to be, being in his early-to-mid 20s. As an android, he's always had the maturity of an adult, though. He's actually one of the oldest out of the Cunning Hares, even if he doesn't seem so at first glance. Speaking of Gentle House, they're like family to him. He frequently acts as an older brother even if, also frequently, he isn't respected as such.

He was built as a combat weapon manufactured for war, so he didn't need to learn tactical bullet arts or how to drive. Despite being a durable war machine, his body is slightly aged due to him being a product of lost technology. He isn't outmoded, per say, but doesn't perform as well as he did a decade ago. All of the repairs to his body are by his own hand, and he’s documented most of it within a notebook because he didn't come with an instruction manual.

His body has doll-esc joints and articulation, including ball joints, and it has been modified so he's able to experience things closer to how humans do, like temperature sensitivity and a pain threshold. Also, his hair is synthetic, so it's very soft.

Most robots of his generation don't need to sleep, only recharge, but he does anyway. He's even learnt how to dream.

Billy always smells ever so faintly of machine oil because it's required to keep his body operational. He masks it with various scents, one of his favourites being vanilla.

It's likely that he wasn't always as autonomous as he is currently, and only began to change once he started his own journey, becoming his own person. Mirroring the real Billy the Kid, he was ‘orphaned’ from his former home when he was (technically) 15. Billy values freedom greatly, but still follows Nicole unquestioningly because he was built to follow orders and feels most comfortable working under somebody. She’s usually the highest form of authority that comes to his mind, and programming-wise he recognises her as his ‘Boss’.

He's probably a hoplophiliac. 

Ironically for a gunslinger, Billy’s eyesight isn’t the best. He often has to squint and/or close one eye to get a clearer picture, making him slightly nearsighted and with possible diplopia in human terms. His model type was built for its accuracy, which is a double-edged sword. He’s still incredibly efficient without perfect vision, making use of his enhanced movement sensors- but his degraded vision is very difficult to fix without the proper materials. This is why it has gone unrepaired.

He has a resting bitch face. His default expression is often mistaken for an angry one, but it’s literally just his face.
