Storia Di Musica #283 - Janes' Addiction, Nothing's Shocking, 1988

La storia di questa band varrebbe la pena di raccontarla per tanti motivi. Ma quello delle copertine controverse, che ho scelto come tema che lega i dischi di Luglio, sembra perfetto per loro. Infatti bastò il primo, memorabile, disco della loro breve e tormentata carriera per passare alla storia come uno dei gruppi più irriverenti e iconoclasti della musica. Ma andiamo con ordine. Tutto inizia a metà anni ’80, a Los Angeles, quando Perry Farrell, originario di New York ma affascinato dal Mito californiano, che cantava in un gruppo “terrificante”, gli Psi Com, conosce Eric Avery, bassista che gli era stato presentato per coprire il posto vacante nel suo gruppo d'origine. C’è subito intesa, e cercando nei circuiti underground dove suonavano mettono insieme una band con il batterista Stephen Perkins e il chitarrista Dave Navarro. Navarro e Farrell hanno una tragica storia comune: sono entrambi orfani di madre, ma mentre quella di Farrell morì suicida quando lui aveva solo 4 anni, quella di Navarro fu assassinata, assieme alla zia, dal suo compagno di quel periodo. Farrell divide il suo appartamento con la sua migliore amica, Jane Bainter, che in quegli anni viveva una devastante tossicodipendenza da eroina. Per aiutarla a uscirne, le dedicarono il nome della nascente band, Jane’s Addiction. Sin da subito emergono due aspetti: il primo, pur rifacendosi all’hard rock degli anni ’70, la loro musica è un bizzarro ed eclettico mix con il glam, innesti funk, ma anche deliberati ganci new wave e rock’n’roll degli anni d’oro; dall’altro diventano grazie alle loro esibizioni gli eroi musicali di tutta una serie di “emarginati” losangelini, il gruppo preferito di prostitute, transessuali, spacciatori, junkies, bikers di dubbia fama che fanno la fila nei locali per vederli suonare. Sono l’attrazione principali di due club, lo Scream e il Roxy, e proprio al Roxy registrano il loro primo disco, Jane’s Addiction, che esce nel 1987. Un live che ha una stupenda prima parte tutta acustica, affascinante e decadente, il clou è il medley Rock’N’Roll (dei Velvet Underground) / Sympathy ( si proprio quella For The Devil dei Rolling Stones) / Jane Says, autografa, che è dedicata alla Jane del loro nome; la seconda parte, si esprime invece in un urticante hard rock che si rifà a Hendrix e ai Led Zeppelin, una scarica elettrica violentissima. Firmano per la Warner Bros. e nel 1988 esce Nothing’s Shocking. Il titolo è fatto apposta sia per la copertina, sia per il suono, in parte davvero rivoluzionario, che la band di Farrell sprigiona. Dico subito una cosa: per via di una pretesa esagerata sulla royalties di Farrell, il disco rischiò di non essere mai pubblicato, e in parte fu registrato in una sorta di tensione permanente tra i membri del gruppo, grazie anche alle cure di Dave Jerden, grande produttore di Talking Heads, David Byrne, Frank Zappa, Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones. Tuttavia la situazione andò piano piano risolvendosi, e l’album poté essere pubblicato.

Farrell pensò da solo alla copertina: una scultura di gemelle siamesi, legate al fianco e alla spalla, a seno nudo su una sedia a dondolo con la testa in fiamme. Chiese aiuto agli uffici grafici della Warner Bros. che inviarono degli artisti, per creare la scultura, ma - dopo aver imparato a crearle da solo osservandole da vicino - li ha licenziati e ha creato lui stesso l'opera d'arte. "L'idea è nata da un sogno che ho fatto", ha ricordato. Fondamentale fu il supporto della sua fidanzata di allora, Casey Niccoli, il cui calco del corpo forma il corpo delle gemelle. La copertina, diventata in seguito iconica, fu rifiutata allora da nove delle undici principali catene di negozi di dischi, che vendevano materialmente il disco solo con una sovraccopertina di cartoncino marrone. Musicalmente, il disco è dirompente, un concentrato di oscurità, droga, violenza ma che ha una luce di speranza in fondo al tunnel, di evasione e di libertà. Si inizia con Up The Beach, dallo storico giro di basso e dalla chitarra di Dave Navarro a ricamare con dei sontuosi ghirigori psichedelici, ricorda a tutti che dopo tutto siamo in California. Ocean Size, potentissima, e Had A Dad diventeranno inni dei loro concerti; Ted, Just Admit It è la prima genialata: il Ted del tiolo è Ted Bundy, tristemente famoso serial killer, famoso anche per l’uso clamoroso che fece della TV per diventare un personaggio. Vengono infatti usate alcune sue dichiarazioni in questo brano di metal moderno da oltre 7 minuti, con Farrell che grida “Sex is violent!”. Standing In The Shower Thinking e Summertime Rolls sono portentose, scritte da Eric Avery che qui proietta la lezione di Peter Hook dei Joy Division, suo eroe musicale, nella Los Angeles di fine anni ’80, e Navarro, meno pirotecnico, per fare un esempio, del suo omologo Slash dei Guns’N’Roses, ma mi permetto di sottolinearne una musicalità più eclettica. Mountain Song diviene l’inno dell’alternative metal (definizione che le riviste coniano proprio per loro). C’è pure il tempo per qualche scherzo, come il funky- jazz di Idiots Rule (dove il loro amico Flea, futuro famosissimo bassista dei Red Hot Chili Peppers suona la tromba) e Thank You Boys. Rimangono due canzoni che facevano già parte del primo live: Pigs In Zen, con Navarro che omaggia Jimmy Page e quella musica così muscolare e la ripresa della canzone che scrissero per la cara Bainter, Jane Says. Chiaramente un omaggio a Lou Reed, il re indiscusso di quel tipo di racconto (riferimento alle sue splendide Candy Says o Stephanie Says), Perry Farrell racconta della devastata vita di Jane, tra il suo magnaccia Sergio, l’eroina, la prostituzione, ma alla fine Jane dice: “non sono mai stata innamorata\non so cosa voglia dire.\So solo quando mi vogliono\e li voglio se mi vogliono\so solo se mi vogliono\S’incazza\e inizia a urlare\cerca di tirarmi un pugno\ma manca il bersaglio,\non ha intenzione di farmi male\è solo che non sa cos’altro fare". Il disco è osannato dalla critica e viene nominato persino ai Grammy Awards. La band tuttavia è sempre sull’orlo dello scioglimento, nonostante la Warner Bros li costringa a scrivere un secondo disco. Ritual De Lo Habitual ha nuovamente la copertina censurata, tre corpi di donne nudi in copertina, in riferimento alla canzone più famosa del disco, Three Days, 11 minuti del rock duro più creativo di fine anni ’80. Prima di sciogliersi, i Jane’s Addiction lanciano Lollapalooza, il festival itinerante con cui aprono le porte a una nuova generazione alternativa, ma che oggi ha perso buona parte di quel messaggio. Si riformano nel 1997, dopo che Farrell ha fondato i Porno For Pyros, e pubblicano Kettle Whistle, si risciolgono, nel 2003 ci riprovano con Strays ma a fine 2004 definitivamente rinunciano. Rimangono una figura determinante per l’evoluzione della musica rock alternativa, e sentendo come suonano è facile capire ancora oggi fu tanto affascinato dalle due gemelle siamese nude, che al posto dei capelli avevano dei bigodini, che si incendiavano meglio per fare una foto più appariscente.

not that i am against the concept of international trade nor do i think tariffs are based or whatever but what is interesting is seeing how much of the american reaction comes down to “but *i* dont want to work in a factory for pennies and *i* dont want my currency to be worthless and to have to pay one billion dollars for iphone” without even acknowledging your comfort depends on a global population who is forced to live under those exact conditions. right. like it or not, for the world to exist as it does, someone’s got to do it. someone’s got to mine the precious metals, someone’s got to forge the machine parts. someone’s got to ruin their body for slave wages, somewhere. the fact that you and i don’t is a result of winning a total genetic lottery and it is the exception not the norm and do what you want with that information but at least dont be callous

Farrell had intended to get help from sculptors working for WB making this cover, but instead decided to make the sculptures himself after watching them closely. Talk about wasting time and money.

The album did not sell well initially because most major music retailers refused to stock the album over the cover. A compromise was eventually made where the cover was hidden by brown paper that could only be removed when unwrapped.

on a completely separate note; shizun luo binghe with a disciple shen yuan who fell into the abyss??? *thinks about LBH canonically stealing SQQ's corpse for 5 years* he'd hallucinate i think. like, like visual and audial hallucinations.

Keeps thinking he's seeing SQQ in the corner of his eyes, or wandering between the trees, amongst a group of disciples. Thinks he hears him calling for him, but its just the wind or another disciple.

Gets Xiu Ya reforged but patently fucking refuses to make a sword mound. Because his disciple Is Not Dead :))) There was No Body. He's Not Dead. And If You keep Insisting That He Is, He's Gonna Skewer You :). He's holding onto Xiu Ya so he can return his most favored disciple's sword when he returns. It's on his hip right next to Zheng Yang where it's supposed to be.

Also this motherfucker?? does not sleep btw. He has the image of SQQ, wide eyed and hysterical and standing at the mouth of the abyss burned into his fucking eyelids. Can't use the dreamscape to escape it either because he keeps trying to save him and either he does and it's an incredibly cruel trick to wake up to, or he doesn't and he gets his heart broken in several different pieces again.

There is no convincing this man that Shen Qingqiu is dead. Absolutely nothing at all. He is buried so deep in denial that moles would be jealous of how deep he is. He keeps making tea for two in the bamboo house only to remember that it's just him. SQQ's fans are hiding everywhere, little reminders of his presence. He goes to wake up SQQ on the mornings he sleeps in-- only to find the room empty.

Danny knows the people he's working for are... shady at best but he needed this job, ever since he left Amity Park after getting into a bad fight with his parents, they wanted him to become a Ghost Hunter (funny how they never really pressured Jazz into it.), he made sure to shut down the portal now since he learned to make portals (and made sure to delete and burn his parents blueprints for it), renounced himself as Ghost King (he really didn't want the responsibility and helped set up a kinda self governing and kinda 'I will come back to help the Realms keep stable but I am NOT ruling' thing)

[Basically Danny is still technically the King, the Realms need him to keep stable (personal head canon the Realms reflect its Ruler, Danny is much more stable than Pariah Dark and thus the Realms are healing and slowly returning to its natural state), but Danny set up a somewhat self governing thing where he can leave but returns very so often to keep the Realms stable and healing. Its complicated but it works.]

AND because his grades tanked hard due to the accident and being a young ghost hero in high school, Danny didn't have a lot of choices for work or even school (he is in college, none of his dream ones though, and is juggling between it and odd jobs here and there)

Anyways so yeah, Danny knows the people he's working for aren't... great. He knows they're shady AF and knows he could maybe find out what if he used his ghost powers but he does need this job for just a bit longer, until his next paycheck that's all.

He also know his new co-worker might be an undercover cop and is investigating them.

Caroline Hill is a nice lady though, even if it was an act to get closer, polite, works hard when paired with him, and very pretty.

So Danny decides to help cover up tiny mistakes or distract their other co-workers/employers when she's snooping around their work areas/offices.
