Sunday Evening Comin' Down
The prompt for Day 18’s Poem a Day Challenge hosted by The Poetry Pub, is “harmattan” which the dusty NE wind that blows through West Africa in the winter. The dryness and dustiness can provide a metaphor to a heart condition that I experience when I am especially tired after a day of ministry. Also, ever since I saw Larry Gatlin talk about Kris Kristofferson’s song “Sunday Morning Comin’ Down”…

Welcome to the Poetry Pub
Tumblr media
Happy November! Either I inadvertently hibernated after finishing Write 31 Days OR I had a strange first half of the week. There was definitely a moment last night where I was in the kitchen making a grown-up drink and my husband and I pretty much were like this:
Tumblr media
While I get my bearings, I wanted to let you know about something fun we started over on Facebook. For the past five-ish years, I’ve done the November Poem a Day Challenge with varying levels of success. The basic idea is NaNoWriMo for poets: except instead of trying to bang out a novel you write a poem each day. The Writer’s Digest poetry blog has a daily prompt, or you can ignore them altogether and write what you want.
Normally, I’d post them on the blog, but this year, I’m NovPadding at a brand new Facebook group called The Poetry Pub! Because NovPadding is way more fun with friends.
There are SO MANY good poems already, y’all. And I hope this space will be a safe place to practice poem-writing, get feedback and encouragement, or just share some of your favorite poets and poems... in November and beyond.
Right now, we’re sharing the daily prompt in the group, so if you want to jump in on NovPAD, feel free to request to join. Hope to see you at the Pub!
And just so I don’t completely neglect the blog... I figure I’ll share my favorite NovPAD piece of the week in this space. :) Here’s a love poem to salsa, for the prompt “glorious”:
It would've been enough to have tomatoes onions limes peppers cilantro (depending who you ask)
but the fact that salsa exists in a world that's sometimes as broken as the chips at the bottom of the bag
is no small thing.

Adapting to the Artistry of Artlessness
Adapting to the Artistry of Artlessness #photography #poetry #NaNoWriMo #NaNoWriMo2022 #NovPAD #MondayBlogs
The Artlessness in Artistry and Artistry in Artlessness by Maria L. Berg 2022 Contradictory Abstract Nouns (Photography Challenge) Today I’m looking at finding the artistry in artlessness and the artlessness in artistry. Artlessness has some interesting and unexpected meanings. Yes, it does mean without art, but it also means free from deceit, cunning, or craftiness; ingenuous 2. not…

Just Enough (NovPAD #6)
Day 6 Prompt: Happy Now
For now give me trees weighed down      with golden glory give me the sharp crispness      of a fresh McIntosh apple give me the bitter and sweet, nearly      overflowing cup of coffee give me nighttime      and rain showers,      warm blankets and      just enough       for colder days ahead.

NovPAD Day 2: Epigraph
Wow, the days sure do pass quickly around here! It seems a mere half hour or so ago, I was writing Day 1! Okay, enough sarcasm. Here's the second of my catch up poems. I'm just going to keep going until I: a. catch up, or b. have a brain meltdown. At which point, for either outcome, writing will cease until tomorrow. SO! Day 2. Today's prompt is to use an epigraph to kickstart the poem. I've recently fallen more in love with quotes by one Dr. Maria Montessori. Being a Montessori teacher myself, I always find her quotes to resonate with me, and help sharpen my view on how I interact with my students. So naturally, I had to include her in this poetry endeavor. Through my Eyes “Of all things love is the most potent.” --Maria Montessori Through my eyes, a cold and dreary wet day is a memory of splashing, laughing puddles or snuggled together with a book and cocoa. Through my eyes, a tragedy is not a hopeless situation but an opportunity to pour myself out to you and make it better. Through my eyes, a place is always safe to explore or run free not to fear a wrong turn or mistake. I am the strongest, and the biggest, The most powerful and most enduring Thing we have to fight against Hate Fear War Anger Injustice. Look through my eyes.

Second Joy
The Day 17 Prompt for The Poetry Pub’s November Poem a Day Challenge  is a Form Friday prompt. The poetic form is “terza rima” — a form invented by Dante Alighieri which he employs in his Divine Comedy. This poem I’ve actually been working on for four years since attending a summer class at Regent College. The class and the eight late July days in Vancouver were some of the most refreshing days…

Light a Candle if it Gets Too Dark
Tumblr media
unpack the blankets, whether you need them or not,
put Bon Iver loud on the record player
to fill the cold hard air,
and let the sun go down
(as if you could stop it.)

They talk about changing time zones
So we’ll get that last hour of daylight
(as if we had the power to add hours
 to our shrinking days)

 How very like us humans
To think we can make time bend
 our way.

I feel winter’s gloom creeping in
and my marrow revolting against
 encroaching cold.

I drink coffee too late,
 light spice scented candles,
 half long for Christmas
 half pine for summer
 fully beg for some light.
This poem is for Day 9′s prompt,” ___ if ____.”

#NaNoWriMo & #NovPAD Day 20 & #SoCS: Overlapping Gray Areas
#NaNoWriMo & #NovPAD Day 20 & #SoCS: Overlapping Gray Areas #poetry #photography #amwriting
Family Clusters by Maria L. Berg 2021 After yesterday’s fun discovery, I created a family of new filters to try. Every Family Has One by Maria L. Berg 2021 Stream of Consciousness Saturday Today’s #SoCS prompt,”black, gray, and white,” inspired me to take some rich black and white photos with my new filters. It changed how I perceived the shapes. I was more attracted to juxtaposing different…

Autumn Appears (NovPAD:1)
Here there is no unfolding drama no banners of autumn in red, orange, yellow, to turn the trees sunlike for just a moment. Here summer locks her fingers in green, clings to lost youth til winter has its way. But the burning beauty in all things is a slow burn until it flames out, until the chill comes a silent reminder that all things are destined to bloom again.
Didn't get this posted last night... Day 1's prompt was "Appearing." Seems appropriate to start with autumn. I thought about how my home state Florida doesn't appear to have a fall, but really, it's still there. Just more subtle. And kind of sneaks up with a cold front. Summer is just kind of clingy.

Bright/Dark
Poetry Pub’s November Poem a Day Challenge’s prompt for Day for is: Bright/Dark. Here’s an attempt. Noon is noon. It resists our manipulation In spite of attempts at hour inflation It comes neither late or too soon. New is new. The moon wanes each month does not listen To songs, waxes full with drips glistens Just once is a moon very blue Let it go Time is relative, is bright and…

Day 4: Transition
(transiens) “passing over or away,” present participle of transire “cross over, go over, pass over, hasten over, pass away,” from trans “across, beyond” (see trans-) + ire “to go” (from PIE root *ei- “to go”). Meaning “passing through a place without staying” I’m catching up a bit on the November Poem a Day Challenge. “Transition,” to me, does not sound appealing; It reminds me of friends who…
