yoinking an open tag from @arendaes to talk about my Rogue Trader MC Crescentia, the Machiavellian nightmare woman that has been haunting my every thought

I don't have any art of her yet and I can't seem to get her right with any picrews so. no image for now. maybe I'll edit this and add the drawing I'm working on when I finish it

GENERAL

Name: Crescentia von Valancius Massimo af Scarus; previous surname lost to time and indifference

Alias: Rogue Trader, Emperor’s Chosen, Bearer of the Sacred Warrant of Trade, Shadowless Sun, Giver of Life, Scourge of Heretics, Cleanser of Janus, and so on and so forth ad nauseam

Gender: cis woman…? she’s never given her gender much thought. (a modern AU might see her playing around with that some more, but as things stand in canon, she’s kind of the equivalent of that “im probably nonbinary but i have a job so idrc about that rn” tweet. except, like. “im probably genderfucky but i am fucking under attack at all times forever so idrc about that rn” I guess.)

Age: 34

Spoken Language: Low Gothic, smatterings of other languages such as High Gothic and apparently Wulfen? she’s got a talent for pulling random knowledges & bits of trivia out of her sleeve, so.

Sexual Orientation: biromantic + demi-bisexual

Occupation: Sanctioned Psyker (might have become an Astropath if things had gone over differently—her telepathy is scary strong), Officer, Grand Strategist, Rogue Trader

FAVOURITE…

Colour: tie between royal purple and cobalt blue

Entertainment: books—so much so that I’d say Crescentia joins the “book club” Cassia and Heinrix have got going on—especially if they’re non-fiction. live music performances, after becoming Rogue Trader. also, and although I’m not sure if this counts as entertainment, per se: attending religious services, even if she has a complicated relationship with the Emperor and her own faith (or… complicated from the outside looking in, anyway, she doesn’t really notice the nuances of it).  

Pastime: regicide… as in the chess-like board game, not as in killing kings LOL. collecting anything she deems interesting or valuable, bonus points if it’s artwork or jewelry. looooooong baths.

Food: any fruit; pastries of all kinds—both sweet and salty—as long as they’re light

Drink: dammassine (“an alcoholic beverage, that has a sweet herbal taste with a hint of almond”, quoth Warhammer Lexicanum because I don’t know enough about this setting to be able to answer this question with anything other than “amasec” LOL)

HAVE THEY…

Passed University: if going through psyker training at the Scholastica Psykana counts, yes; otherwise, no

Had Sex: yes

Had Sex in Public: no

Got Tattoos: I keep going back and forth on this, but for now, no

Got Piercings: no. she wears an ear cuff with a golden chain sometimes, but it’s one of those cuffs that latches on to the ear, not an earring.

Got Scarred: VERY MUCH SO, both due to backstory events (Shadow of Torment babyyy) & during the game proper. a couple of those she’s covered up with augmetics, but others have just remained as-is, albeit concealed underneath layers and layers of clothing so they’re not visible at first glance.

Had a Broken Heart: not sure, but probably not. she’s hard to get to emotionally.

ARE THEY…

A Cuddler: nope, quite the opposite in fact. she’s pretty touch-averse. there are only a handful of people in the whole galaxy she’d feel comfortable touching in a casual, affectionate manner, such as cuddling—Kibellah (her lover) & Jae (her bestie), plus a special case with Cassia and Abelard where Crescentia would be okay with, say, a casual friendly hug, but she’s not sure whether they would be okay with it. and she’s not about to ask either way, considering she doesn’t really crave touch all that badly anyway.

Scared Easily: not at all

Jealous Easily: oh ABSOLUTELY, she is very very possessive of what she considers “hers” and that possessiveness often manifests as becoming sick with jealousy at the drop of a hat. she hates the idea of whatever Belongs To Her—things, people, power, titles, planets, you name it—being taken from their rightful place (read: from her) and gets NASTY when she feels threatened in that respect

Trustworthy: to a degree…? she’ll keep her word as long as it doesn’t harm her to do so and as long as there isn’t a greater benefit to be found in not keeping her word, so. not really trustworthy. but also you can make yourself valuable enough to her that she’ll become trustworthy because it’s in her best interest to do so…?

FAMILY…

Sibling(s): who knows? who cares? unimportant, surely. (one brother who went on to become a Commissar.)

Parents: father a voidborn, mother a minor noble from an Imperial world who was cast out by her family. they were actually pretty good parents, even if Crescentia’s mother still kept a bit of that noble attitude about her and is part of the reason why Crescentia grew up feeling entitled to a greater lot in life, something more glorious and luxurious than the mediocrity she’d been apportioned. when her psyker powers manifested, they turned her in without complaint, but that was out of, like… self-preservation? and a very deep-set belief that they had to follow orders Or Else. neither of them exteriorised it, but losing their daughter like that gutted them to the point where it almost destroyed their relationship & both of them as people. doesn’t mean Crescentia saw that from their perspective or ever forgave them for it, mind you. she has never EVER come to terms with that bitterness that’s got a chokehold on her. she just adjusted her personality & her expectations accordingly and became much, much more cold and calculating than she already was.

so. you know. the love was there. it didn’t change anything. it might’ve made matters worse. but it was there.

Children: No… mos

Pets: none. she might want one, but she is not very good at taking care of. Anything.

playing the RT prologue again made me have a Certified Moment over Cresbellah, don't mind me.

(under a cut for length but for those concerned about DLC2 spoilers—don't worry, I haven't even gotten to the DLC2 content yet so none of those to be found here.)

because Crescentia starts the game with an entirely different attitude & another set of goals in mind. if you've seen me talk/post about her before you've probably been able to glean that she is very proud, very selfish, very spiteful, very vocal about her desires and why she deserves to have them fulfilled. a nasty little control freak on a neverending power trip. but she is also very, very, very manipulative & that includes knowing when to keep her head down and not make waves. and in the prologue, she's the least powerful she's been in... a while. that's not to say she held a position of power before—she was a very highly-regarded battle psyker in the Astra Militarum, but the nature of being a battle psyker meant she was still on a leash 24/7—but at least she knew the environment, the people, what to expect, how to act in order to get some wiggle room.

but in the Von Valancius flagship? she knows nobody. she is a Von Valancius heir, which, sure, is a boon status-wise and technically speaking puts her above give-or-take 85-90% of the people on the ship, but materially speaking it kind of means jack shit. she's still a newcomer, she's still regarded with suspicion on account of her sorcery, and the odds of her becoming Rogue Trader are very slim. her best course of action is to try and cozy up to Edelthrad, the likeliest candidate, but he hates her guts at first sight (either because he picks up on her rancid ass vibes, because of internalised psykerphobia or both), so, oops, that's a bust.

(side note, I think that in an AU where Edelthrad became Rogue Trader, Crescentia would still manage to weasel her way into the ship's crew somehow, and then, Woops, would you look at that, the Lord Captain has met a most mysterious and untimely demise. Surely we shall never know what caused this enigmatic death. Good thing there is another Von Valancius heir nearby, ready to pick up the mantle!!!!! smile

aka Crescentia is every bit as shady and backstabbing as Kunrad. which makes her dislike of him seem hypocritical, but in all fairness she doesn't care that he betrayed Theodora, she just cares that he drew her into it and also that he didn't even have the good grace to be competent at it. hashtag cringe.)

but either way the point I'm trying to make in-between all this rambling is that prologue!Crescentia would be UNRECOGNISABLE to the members of her retinue who meet her after she's become Rogue Trader. & even the people who do meet her during the prologue have to raise an eyebrow at how she entered megalomania mode in 0.000000001 seconds flat after being given the reins of the Lux Victoriae. because in all her prior interactions with Theodora & high-ranking members of the ship, she was perfectly polite, only spoke when spoken to, followed orders without protesting, etc etc. clever enough to come across as an asset, but not incisive enough to make herself a threat. her becoming Rogue Trader is a whole-ass mask drop moment for her because she's like. Yay! No need to go through all the trouble of assassinating a dude so I can take his place! thanks Kunrad you're a real one xoxo

HOWEVER. the main thing is. for all her ambition, for all her greed, for how badly she wants to be womanspreading on the Captain's seat. she literally has no motivation beyond "idgaf I've got mine & I'll put in the work to make sure I keep mine." she doesn't care for spreading the Imperium's influence or abiding by the Emperor's will because she is only devout as lip-service & as a weird coping mechanism that doesn't make much sense to anyone; she doesn't have much of a vested interest in the wellbeing of her people beyond "I've gotta keep them happy so they don't riot or give themselves over to the forces of Chaos" (which is something she learned during her childhood/adolescence aboard a ship, & then in the Black Ship and all the battle psyker stints that involved spacefaring—the "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" method, essentially. even if it's deemed Suspicious as Fuck, verging on heretical, by most Imperium authorities. but crucially she manages to fly under the radar in this respect for a LONG LONG time, because she's not a true Iconoclast). she only cares about her duty insofar as it benefits her.

then she meets Kibellah. and "fuck you, I've got mine" becomes "oh turns out I've gotta tear apart the very foundations of the universe to keep you safe."

which, like. worth noting that Crescentia does care very deeply for her friends and for everyone that she considers "hers". if you fuck with her loved ones you fuck with her, end of story. she goes to great lengths to make sure Abelard's family get their deserved place amongst Dargonus nobility (and she is swift and merciless on the retribution during Blood Ties); after the apparition fiasco she makes it abundantly clear to everyone that Idira is under the Rogue Trader's personal protection, with all that entails; she goes through the whole song-and-dance of the Adeptus Administratum for her bestie Jae, defends her against all of the people who have a vendetta against her even when they are right in theory, gives her a wealth of opportunities as a business partner, and so on and so forth. all of her loved ones get preferential treatment.

but Kibellah is a special case because Kibellah is the only person for whom Crescentia puts herself in danger of actively losing it all. Kibellah is the only person for whom Crescentia stops toeing the line of what's acceptable for a Rogue Trader, the only person for whom she stops dealing in masks and fake smiles and knives behind the back and thoughts read surreptitiously. she sees the way the Bloodspun Web has honed Kibellah into a weapon and then she sees the person beneath that, beyond that, and she becomes determined to save her. to lift her out from the labyrinth's grasp. to give her a place of honour next to her. & all this despite Crescentia initially having no goals but to keep the power she's been bestowed, the power she feels she's entitled to and that she's been waiting so long for!

so for Crescentia it's, like. from obscurity into light. shining, blinding, overwhelming. she becomes the Shadowless Sun of the Von Valancius dynasty. AND THEN. after getting everything she's ever wanted. everything changes again. because of one woman whom Crescentia loves so fiercely she's willing to go to any lengths to give her a better, more comfortable life. and if that involves abusing the privileges she's been given as Rogue Trader and putting herself under heavy scrutiny, so be it. because We're all that matters, love. because You and I can stand against any dangers and neither break not falter. You and I are infinite, eternal. We will last until every last star in the universe blinks out of existence, and then we will find each other's hands in the darkness that follows, and we will carve our own path. because they are Orpheus and Eurydice except Orpheus does not look back, Orpheus keeps singing all the way out of the underworld.

(and the tragedy lies elsewhere, but she won't tell you where. she won't let you know. Orpheus is too good at spinning tall tales, this time around. a smile, a crown, a memory. a newborn god. damage control.

one day all of it ends. it has to. but not on her watch. not while she's looking.)

Crescentia “Cress” von Valancius - she/they - #crescentia von valancius

Noble - Iconoclast/Dogmatic - Heinrix Romance

Born to a minor noble family, Crescentia enjoyed a life better than most in the Imperium, despite her parent's growing animosity towards one another. She was kidnapped as a young teenager, leaving her scarred and paranoid. Crescentia spent years scarcely leaving her family's estate, often not even leaving her room, and she became known for being aloof and melancholic. Her family arranged for her to be married young, prompting her to run away from home. Obscuring her noble birth, Crescentia worked at a trading house until the Kunrad Voigtvir found her and brought her to Lady Theodora. Though she often struggles with her new position, Crescentia is driven by her convictions and seeks to treat her people with more compassion than her predecessor.

Fatebinder - Hunter Origin - Anarchy Route

Born in a human village razed by the Disfavored, Hunts-Alongside was adopted by the Prima of the Bounding Vipers and soon became more like a Beastwoman in temperament than a human. When the Disfavored killed her pack too, she was taken prisoner and paraded around as a spectacle before catching Tunon's interest. Her time in the court gave her a more civilized outward appearance, but couldn't shake her deep-seated kinship with Beasts. Her bloody path to becoming an Archon was unsurprising and she is set on using her newfound power to liberate the Beastwomen of the Tiers.

Primrose “Prim” “Athame” Gardner - they/them - #athame gardner

The Dark Urge - Wild Magic Sorcerer - Tiefling - Shadowheart Romance

Raised in Baldur's Gate, one of Prim's mothers died when they were young, leaving their remaining mother distraught and neglectful. Ostracized by their peers for being a tiefling and facing abuse at home, Prim's only friend was a young Enver Flymm. When he seemingly disappeared, Prim was once again alone and the stress led them to snap and kill their mother. Sceleritis Fel presented himself to them, explaining their heritage and grooming them into an heir worthy of being the Lord Bhaal's next Primistress of Baldur's Gate. Taking on the name Athame within the church while continuing to run their mothers' apothecary as Prim, they became one of the Gate's most feared serial murderers before Orin tadpoled them. Suffering from amnesia and a shattered mind that leaves them unable to even remember their real name, Athame dutifully serves Bhaal again after their tadpoling. They pull others down with them and leave destruction in their wake, only hesitating last minute, outraged over the death of their beloved sister. Defying Bhaal, Athame goes on to save Baldur's Gate, but is left with nothing but their regrets at the end of it.

Riellen “Rook” Laidir - they/them - #riellen laidir

Lord of Fortune - Elf - Spellblade - Lucanis Romance

Born as a slave in Tevinter, Riellen was separated from their family at a young age, sold to Magister Laetitia, Ringmistress of the Vyrantium Circus of Splendors, who valued Riellen's double-jointedness. Riellen performed at the circus as a contortionist where they grew close to another slave, Finera. After years in the circus, a tent fire gave Riellen and Finera a chance to escape. When slave catchers found the escapees, Finera let herself get caught so Riellen could get away. Carrying on alone and riddled with guilt, Riellen traveled to Rivain to meet up with Finera’s old flame, Isabella, who brought them into the fold as a Lord of Fortune. They took to their new role well, quickly earning acclaim among their fellow Lords and coming to love the thrill of each new adventure.

Tiresias Varataai - he/him - #tiresias varataai

Nerevarine - Dunmer - Spellsword - House Redoran - Mage's Guild 

Raised in Bravil, Tiresias grew up impoverished. His mother was sickly and his father had abandoned her before he was born, leaving Tiresias to resort to crime at a young age to get by. As a teen, he joined a small-time gang that started as petty criminals but eventually broke into skooma smuggling. Wanting to break away from this, Tiresias began working as a mercenary on the side, learning both swordplay and Destruction magic. This came to a halt when Tiresias’s mother killed herself for reasons unbeknownst to him, and his resulting depression spiraled him into a moon sugar addiction. Later, when a deal went south, Tiresias's gang let him take the fall for it and he spent years in jail plotting his revenge before being shipped off to Morrowind. Struggling with his mental decline and finding it increasingly difficult to figure out where Nerevar ends and he begins, Tiresias - though begrudgingly at first - unites Morrowind and finds a renewed purpose in life.

favorite ocs is hard, but if i am pressed to choose, it will have to be three in no particular order: hyra, hallow, & esha. i deeply miss our hyra/sh stuff, because i just adored hyra. hallow FASCINATES me with their lore and whole situation. esha has such a compelling backstory and personality for being a necromancer that i just … 🥰

Originaly I only wanted to draw a quick coloured doodle of Tibarn x my OC Sylana, but I didn't end up as such lol I think I started that one at the end of October'23 and only finished it now xD Though not neccessarily because the artwork itself was a lot of work, but because I'm plenty busy lately, so I only had the energy to work on it sporadically.

Anyhow, hope you like it!
