Canada and the trade war (Bloomberg) As the trade war drags on, trade flows are shifting away from America. Canadian exports to the US tumbled while shipments to other countries soared. The Trump administration’s duties on Canadian steel, aluminum, autos and other products, as well as Canada’s retaliatory levies on a range of American goods, led to a large pullback in activity between Canada and its largest trading partner in March. Canadian exports to the US plunged 6.6%, while imports fell 2.9%. Canada’s exports to countries other than the US jumped 24.8%, however, almost entirely offsetting the decline in shipments to the south.
One Ship, $417 Million in New Tariffs (Bloomberg) On April 24, against the backdrop of towering cranes, dockworkers at the Port of Long Beach began unloading the OOCL Violet, a hulking shipping vessel carrying thousands of containers full of goods bound for the US. The Violet is one of the first ships confronting a harsh, new reality: a steep 145% tariff rate on nearly half of its Chinese cargo, brought on by President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war with China. The ship had already begun loading goods bound for the US prior to Trump’s April 2 tariff announcement. When the ship reached California, it carried cargo with a total estimated value of at least $564 million, according to detailed bills of lading data from IHS Markit. About 40% of the goods were likely subject to the new 145% rate, according to Bloomberg News estimates. The data suggests importing companies face at least $417 million in new tariffs for all goods on the ship. That’s on top of preexisting import fees. The number of cargo ships headed from China to the US has plummeted in recent weeks.
Americans used to be steadfast in their support for Israel. Those days are gone (BBC) Opinion polls suggest support for Israel among the American public is dwindling. A Gallup survey taken in March this year found only 46% of Americans expressed support for Israel (the lowest level in 25 years of Gallup’s annual tracking) while 33% now said they sympathised with the Palestinians—the highest ever reading of that measure. Other polls have found similar results. The US has long been Israel’s most powerful ally—ever since May 1948, when America was the first country to recognise the nascent State of Israel. But while US support for Israel is extremely likely to continue long-term, these swings in sentiment raise questions over the practical extent and policy limits of the US’s ironclad backing and whether the shifting sands of public opinion will eventually feed through to Washington, with real-world policy impacts. In March this year, the Institute for National Security Studies, a leading Tel Aviv-based think tank led by Hayman, published a paper arguing that US public opinion had entered the “danger zone”, as far as support for Israel was concerned.
U.S. Orders Intelligence Agencies to Step Up Spying on Greenland (WSJ) The U.S. is stepping up its intelligence-gathering efforts regarding Greenland, drawing America’s spying apparatus into President Trump’s campaign to take over the island, according to two people familiar with the effort. Several high-ranking officials under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a “collection emphasis message” to intelligence-agency heads last week. They were directed to learn more about Greenland’s independence movement and attitudes on American resource extraction on the island. The classified message asked agencies, whose tools include surveillance satellites, communications intercepts and spies on the ground, to identify people in Greenland and Denmark who support U.S. objectives for the island. The directive is one of the first concrete steps Trump’s administration has taken toward fulfilling the president’s often-stated desire to acquire Greenland.
Thousands march over concern Panama bending to US government (AP) Thousands of Panamanians marched in the capital Tuesday in the largest protest yet against an agreement signed during last month’s visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth giving U.S. troops access to strategic air and naval facilities in the Central American nation. U.S. President Donald Trump thrust Panama into the spotlight even before winning election last November by suggesting that his country should consider retaking control of the Panama Canal and accusing Panama of ceding influence to China. Panama has vehemently rejected those comments but also tried to pacify the new administration, which has slapped tariffs on many trade partners. Protesters accused President José Raúl Mulino of sacrificing Panama’s sovereignty with the deal.
Why Brazil’s soy farmers love Trump and his tariffs on China (Washington Post) At the agricultural fair along Highway 158 in Confresa, the cowboy hats were on and the mood was festive. A decadent arrangement of fine cheeses, fresh fruits and sausages had been spread out across several tables. People were joking around, sipping guaraná, the local soda, and admiring expensive farming equipment draped with the Brazilian flag. In the heart of Brazil’s soy country, there was reason to celebrate: Donald Trump had reignited a trade war with China, and farmers here were ready to reap the rewards. “The United States is provoking this fight,” said soy farmer Wesley Moacir Rosa, 50. “But it is Brazil that is going to end up benefiting.” China is by far the world’s largest market for soy, importing more than 100 million tons each year to sustain its vast hog farms. For years, this was a boon for both Brazilian and American farmers. Together, they supplied the bulk of China’s demand for soy, and the product became the top agricultural export for both countries. But the first trade war between Trump and China in 2018 sent American exports plummeting. Expecting a record harvest this year, Brazil is now poised to solidify its dominance.
Germany Gets a New Chancellor, in Unexpectedly Dramatic Fashion (NYT) Friedrich Merz became Germany’s 10th postwar chancellor on Tuesday after a historic stumble that could complicate his efforts to revive the nation’s slumping economy, tighten its borders and rebuild its military, at a time when an isolated Europe is hungry for strong German leadership. After 10 weeks as the nation’s leader-in-waiting following his party’s victory in February elections, Mr. Merz initially fell six votes short in the parliamentary vote for chancellor on Tuesday morning—a defeat without precedent in modern Germany’s history. Mr. Merz, 69, rebounded to win on a second ballot in the afternoon. Still, rival parties and outside analysts warned that his credibility had suffered at home and abroad.
Papal conclave to begin (Washington Post) As the cardinals prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel in procession Wednesday for the start of the conclave to pick the next pope, talk is swirling that the throne of St. Peter could go to a first pontiff from the United States. Just as many voices herald the chances of three Italians and a come-from-behind Spaniard serving in Morocco. A Filipino, a Frenchman, a Congolese and a long-monastic Swede are talks of the town too. Yet as all eyes wait for the billowing white smoke that signals Habemus Papam—“We have a pope”—the wisest watchers have a warning. Nobody really knows who will be the next pope, at a time of deep church division. Once they enter the chapel at 4:30 p.m., the cardinals under 80—including nearly two dozen from countries that have never had a voice in a conclave before—will be sequestered for votes, released only to retire to their boardinghouse for meals and rest, until a new pope is found. There will be no interpreters, no speeches, no lobbying (theoretically). There will be only prayer, chatter and votes.
Some Russians Fight Propaganda in Schools (NYT) Some schools in Russia are preparing fake schedules to conceal their efforts to shun patriotic education classes. Some parents school their children at home. Others try to help young people navigate a school system in which they say propaganda is pervasive. Faced with what they say is an ever-growing flood of misinformation about the war in Ukraine in Russian schools, parents and teachers who oppose the conflict say they are waging a desperate battle for the minds of their children. “You constantly have to play cat-and-mouse with the school: New things keep coming up like rounds of gunfire,” said Varvara, 42, a mother of four. She cited activities that she saw as bolstering the war effort: a music teacher who held a contest to perform Russian military songs; her teenage son’s school outing to hear a pro-war talk by a veteran of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan; classes that portray Russia as a victim and the West as an enemy.
China’s Xi is in Moscow for Putin’s parade as ties deepen despite Trump’s efforts (Washington Post) When Chinese leader Xi Jinping visited Russian President Vladimir Putin for a pomp-filled summit two years ago, he had a special message: Together, he and Putin were driving “changes the likes of which we haven’t seen for 100 years.” He was signaling Chinese and Russian confidence in the United States’ inevitable long-term decline and the opportunities opening up for Beijing and Moscow, according to analysts. That goal appears suddenly closer, with President Donald Trump’s retreat from global leadership, threats to absorb other countries and territories, disruption of NATO and transatlantic ties, and steep tariffs on about 90 countries. Xi will be in Moscow from Wednesday through Saturday and attend Friday’s Victory Day military parade marking 80 years since the end of World War II. The visit will include meetings with Putin and showcase the importance of their close ties, as well as publicly dispel talk of the Trump administration seeking to split them by offering inducements and concessions to Moscow while targeting its toughest tariffs against Beijing.
Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive (AP) Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 59 people, including women and children, hospital officials said Wednesday, as Israel prepares to ramp up its campaign against Hamas in a devastating war now entering its 20th month. The strikes included one attack on Tuesday night on a school sheltering hundreds of displaced Palestinians, which killed 27 people, officials from the Al-Aqsa Hospital said, including nine women and three children. It was the fifth time since the war began that the school in central Gaza has been struck. An early morning strike on another school turned shelter in Gaza City killed 16 people, while strikes on targets in other areas killed at least 16 others.
Trump Administration Plans to Send Migrants to Libya on a Military Flight (NYT) The Trump administration is planning to transport a group of immigrants to Libya on a U.S. military plane, according to U.S. officials, another sharp escalation in a deportation program that has sparked widespread legal challenges and intense political debate. The nationalities of the migrants were not immediately clear, but a flight to Libya carrying the deportees could leave as soon as Wednesday, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation. The decision to send deportees to Libya was striking. The country is racked with conflict, and human rights groups have called conditions in its network of migrant detention centers “horrific” and “deplorable.” The Libya operation falls in line with the Trump administration’s effort to not only deter migrants from trying to enter the country illegally but also to send a strong message to those in the country illegally that they can be deported to countries where they could face brutal conditions.
Another Navy jet falls into sea, marking fourth major mishap in months (Washington Post) A Navy fighter jet failed to land on an aircraft carrier and plummeted into the Red Sea on Tuesday, marking the fourth major mishap involving the vessel and the third loss of a fighter jet deployed with it since the warship left home last year. The F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, worth about $67 million, went overboard after an unsuccessful attempt to slow it down upon landing on the USS Harry S. Truman, the Navy said in a statement. Both aviators aboard the jet safely ejected and were rescued at sea by helicopter with minor injuries, and no one aboard the warship’s flight deck was harmed, the service said.

April 2022 - State of Freight
Hello Everyone, this is Evin here again with a delivery update. There’s good news on most fronts with mixed news on one front.
State of Freight
All games bound for boats have left the Panda GM factory in Shenzhen. The consignment was split up into four parts, going on different sea lanes: Australia, UK, Europe, and the US.
The UK consignment was the first to leave the factory, departing on the 7th of April.
The European and Australian consignments left not long after, on the same day as each other - the 11th of April.
With the US consignment we were less fortunate, and had to deal with a series of bureaucratic obstacles from the IRS and from US Customs & Border Protection before freight could be finalised. The US consignment left the factory only a few days ago, on April 27, and is due in the US in mid-June.
The small consignment due for China is yet to leave the factory but will likely be freighted within the week.
Given that we’re delivering over two years late, we’re not going to stand on ceremony and shoot for some kind of unified global release date. If we can get you your copy of BOTC, we’re going to get it to you as soon as possible. This means that some backers could be getting their copy of BOTC as soon as mid-May, whilst others will be waiting until the second half of June or even into July. We’re sorry that the good folks in North America will have to wait longer than everyone else, but holding delivery on everyone else’s copies won’t get those ones there any sooner.
If you want to track the vessels for each consignment, here are the boat names and some handy links:
Australia - OOCL Italy (already arrived in Sydney)
UK - CSCL Atlantic Ocean
Europe - HMM Hanbada
US - Ever Fair & Gunde Maersk
Confirming Delivery Addresses
If you want to update your delivery address, please check the email that you received from CrowdOx in early March for the address update link.
If you’re in Australia or New Zealand, you need to have your final delivery address locked in by Friday May 6. Any changes after this may incur an extra cost.
Changes of address are fine in-country up until the relevant consignment arrives in your region. Changes of country may be possible still, just email us at [email protected] if you need to do this.
If you made your pre-order via our online store and not CrowdOx, please respond to your order confirmation email to update your delivery address.
That’s all for now. By next month some of you should actually have your copies of Blood on the Clocktower! Thank you for sticking with us. We’re almost there.
Sincerely,
Evin

Commonwealth Bank of Australia Partners With World Bank to Issue First-Ever Blockchain Bond
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has been mandated by the World Bank to issue the world’s first bond created, allocated and managed on the blockchain. Once issued, the bond will be managed by the World Bank in Washington and CBA in Sydney over a private Ethereum-based blockchain, with CBA stating that it remains open to any other project that can offer a better alternative. CBA has been a firm believer in blockchain technology, recently announcing that it had conducted a successful blockchain-based shipment of almonds between Australia and Germany.
Embracing Emerging Technology
The new Kangaroo bond will be known as the Blockchain Offered New Debt Instrument (bond-i) and will be denominated in AUD. A Kangaroo bond is a foreign bond issued in Australia that’s denominated in the local Australian dollar. According to a press release from the bank, the project is a collaboration between the bank and a number of investors which include the Treasury Corporation of Victoria; Australia’s largest insurer, QBE Insurance; and Chicago-based financial services giant Northern Trust.
The issuing of a blockchain-based bond was necessitated by strong investor interest, the World Bank noted. The bank, which issues up to $60 billion in bonds annually for sustainable development, is confident that blockchain technology can greatly improve the bond issuance process.
Blockchain has the potential to streamline processes among numerous debt capital market intermediaries and agents. This can help simplify raising capital and trading securities, improve operational efficiencies, and enhance regulatory oversight.
A blockchain-issued bond is just the latest in a string of pioneering moves made by the Washington-based financial institution. In a bid to help countries transition to technology-led sustainable economies, the World Bank is always at the forefront of embracing emerging technologies into its operations. It was the first bank to issue a globally traded and settled bond in 1989, and it introduced the first fully integrated electronic bond in 2000. It’s the blockchain’s turn now, stated the World Bank’s treasurer, Arunma Oteh.
Today, we believe that emerging technologies equally offer transformative yet prudent possibilities for us to continue to innovate, respond to investor needs and strengthen markets. We are therefore delighted that after working with our information technology colleagues and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia over several months, we are now in a position to launch our first blockchain bond transaction.
The bond-i blockchain platform – bond-i also refers to the iconic Australian Bondi beach – was developed by CBA’s Blockchain Centre of Excellence, with Microsoft as its technology partner. The center has been conducting research and development of blockchain solutions for a diverse range of industries ranging from banking to supply chain management.
Two weeks ago, CBA announced in a press release that it had successfully shipped and tracked 17 tons of almonds on a blockchain platform from Victoria, Australia to Hamburg, Germany. The platform incorporated other emerging technologies as well, including smart contracts and the Internet of Things. The project was conducted in partnership with five international supply chain stakeholders including the Port of Melbourne, Hong Kong-based logistics company OOCL, and the world’s second-largest almond grower, Olam Orchards. The main area of focus for the platform was the digitization of operations, documentation, and finance processes. The five partners were able to track the humidity, temperature, and other conditions inside the shipment in real time using IoT devices.
