Canada and the trade war (Bloomberg) As the trade war drags on, trade flows are shifting away from America. Canadian exports to the US tumbled while shipments to other countries soared. The Trump administration’s duties on Canadian steel, aluminum, autos and other products, as well as Canada’s retaliatory levies on a range of American goods, led to a large pullback in activity between Canada and its largest trading partner in March. Canadian exports to the US plunged 6.6%, while imports fell 2.9%. Canada’s exports to countries other than the US jumped 24.8%, however, almost entirely offsetting the decline in shipments to the south.
One Ship, $417 Million in New Tariffs (Bloomberg) On April 24, against the backdrop of towering cranes, dockworkers at the Port of Long Beach began unloading the OOCL Violet, a hulking shipping vessel carrying thousands of containers full of goods bound for the US. The Violet is one of the first ships confronting a harsh, new reality: a steep 145% tariff rate on nearly half of its Chinese cargo, brought on by President Donald Trump’s ongoing trade war with China. The ship had already begun loading goods bound for the US prior to Trump’s April 2 tariff announcement. When the ship reached California, it carried cargo with a total estimated value of at least $564 million, according to detailed bills of lading data from IHS Markit. About 40% of the goods were likely subject to the new 145% rate, according to Bloomberg News estimates. The data suggests importing companies face at least $417 million in new tariffs for all goods on the ship. That’s on top of preexisting import fees. The number of cargo ships headed from China to the US has plummeted in recent weeks.
Americans used to be steadfast in their support for Israel. Those days are gone (BBC) Opinion polls suggest support for Israel among the American public is dwindling. A Gallup survey taken in March this year found only 46% of Americans expressed support for Israel (the lowest level in 25 years of Gallup’s annual tracking) while 33% now said they sympathised with the Palestinians—the highest ever reading of that measure. Other polls have found similar results. The US has long been Israel’s most powerful ally—ever since May 1948, when America was the first country to recognise the nascent State of Israel. But while US support for Israel is extremely likely to continue long-term, these swings in sentiment raise questions over the practical extent and policy limits of the US’s ironclad backing and whether the shifting sands of public opinion will eventually feed through to Washington, with real-world policy impacts. In March this year, the Institute for National Security Studies, a leading Tel Aviv-based think tank led by Hayman, published a paper arguing that US public opinion had entered the “danger zone”, as far as support for Israel was concerned.
U.S. Orders Intelligence Agencies to Step Up Spying on Greenland (WSJ) The U.S. is stepping up its intelligence-gathering efforts regarding Greenland, drawing America’s spying apparatus into President Trump’s campaign to take over the island, according to two people familiar with the effort. Several high-ranking officials under Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard issued a “collection emphasis message” to intelligence-agency heads last week. They were directed to learn more about Greenland’s independence movement and attitudes on American resource extraction on the island. The classified message asked agencies, whose tools include surveillance satellites, communications intercepts and spies on the ground, to identify people in Greenland and Denmark who support U.S. objectives for the island. The directive is one of the first concrete steps Trump’s administration has taken toward fulfilling the president’s often-stated desire to acquire Greenland.
Thousands march over concern Panama bending to US government (AP) Thousands of Panamanians marched in the capital Tuesday in the largest protest yet against an agreement signed during last month’s visit by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth giving U.S. troops access to strategic air and naval facilities in the Central American nation. U.S. President Donald Trump thrust Panama into the spotlight even before winning election last November by suggesting that his country should consider retaking control of the Panama Canal and accusing Panama of ceding influence to China. Panama has vehemently rejected those comments but also tried to pacify the new administration, which has slapped tariffs on many trade partners. Protesters accused President José Raúl Mulino of sacrificing Panama’s sovereignty with the deal.
Why Brazil’s soy farmers love Trump and his tariffs on China (Washington Post) At the agricultural fair along Highway 158 in Confresa, the cowboy hats were on and the mood was festive. A decadent arrangement of fine cheeses, fresh fruits and sausages had been spread out across several tables. People were joking around, sipping guaraná, the local soda, and admiring expensive farming equipment draped with the Brazilian flag. In the heart of Brazil’s soy country, there was reason to celebrate: Donald Trump had reignited a trade war with China, and farmers here were ready to reap the rewards. “The United States is provoking this fight,” said soy farmer Wesley Moacir Rosa, 50. “But it is Brazil that is going to end up benefiting.” China is by far the world’s largest market for soy, importing more than 100 million tons each year to sustain its vast hog farms. For years, this was a boon for both Brazilian and American farmers. Together, they supplied the bulk of China’s demand for soy, and the product became the top agricultural export for both countries. But the first trade war between Trump and China in 2018 sent American exports plummeting. Expecting a record harvest this year, Brazil is now poised to solidify its dominance.
Germany Gets a New Chancellor, in Unexpectedly Dramatic Fashion (NYT) Friedrich Merz became Germany’s 10th postwar chancellor on Tuesday after a historic stumble that could complicate his efforts to revive the nation’s slumping economy, tighten its borders and rebuild its military, at a time when an isolated Europe is hungry for strong German leadership. After 10 weeks as the nation’s leader-in-waiting following his party’s victory in February elections, Mr. Merz initially fell six votes short in the parliamentary vote for chancellor on Tuesday morning—a defeat without precedent in modern Germany’s history. Mr. Merz, 69, rebounded to win on a second ballot in the afternoon. Still, rival parties and outside analysts warned that his credibility had suffered at home and abroad.
Papal conclave to begin (Washington Post) As the cardinals prepare to enter the Sistine Chapel in procession Wednesday for the start of the conclave to pick the next pope, talk is swirling that the throne of St. Peter could go to a first pontiff from the United States. Just as many voices herald the chances of three Italians and a come-from-behind Spaniard serving in Morocco. A Filipino, a Frenchman, a Congolese and a long-monastic Swede are talks of the town too. Yet as all eyes wait for the billowing white smoke that signals Habemus Papam—“We have a pope”—the wisest watchers have a warning. Nobody really knows who will be the next pope, at a time of deep church division. Once they enter the chapel at 4:30 p.m., the cardinals under 80—including nearly two dozen from countries that have never had a voice in a conclave before—will be sequestered for votes, released only to retire to their boardinghouse for meals and rest, until a new pope is found. There will be no interpreters, no speeches, no lobbying (theoretically). There will be only prayer, chatter and votes.
Some Russians Fight Propaganda in Schools (NYT) Some schools in Russia are preparing fake schedules to conceal their efforts to shun patriotic education classes. Some parents school their children at home. Others try to help young people navigate a school system in which they say propaganda is pervasive. Faced with what they say is an ever-growing flood of misinformation about the war in Ukraine in Russian schools, parents and teachers who oppose the conflict say they are waging a desperate battle for the minds of their children. “You constantly have to play cat-and-mouse with the school: New things keep coming up like rounds of gunfire,” said Varvara, 42, a mother of four. She cited activities that she saw as bolstering the war effort: a music teacher who held a contest to perform Russian military songs; her teenage son’s school outing to hear a pro-war talk by a veteran of the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan; classes that portray Russia as a victim and the West as an enemy.
China’s Xi is in Moscow for Putin’s parade as ties deepen despite Trump’s efforts (Washington Post) When Chinese leader Xi Jinping visited Russian President Vladimir Putin for a pomp-filled summit two years ago, he had a special message: Together, he and Putin were driving “changes the likes of which we haven’t seen for 100 years.” He was signaling Chinese and Russian confidence in the United States’ inevitable long-term decline and the opportunities opening up for Beijing and Moscow, according to analysts. That goal appears suddenly closer, with President Donald Trump’s retreat from global leadership, threats to absorb other countries and territories, disruption of NATO and transatlantic ties, and steep tariffs on about 90 countries. Xi will be in Moscow from Wednesday through Saturday and attend Friday’s Victory Day military parade marking 80 years since the end of World War II. The visit will include meetings with Putin and showcase the importance of their close ties, as well as publicly dispel talk of the Trump administration seeking to split them by offering inducements and concessions to Moscow while targeting its toughest tariffs against Beijing.
Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive (AP) Israeli strikes across Gaza killed at least 59 people, including women and children, hospital officials said Wednesday, as Israel prepares to ramp up its campaign against Hamas in a devastating war now entering its 20th month. The strikes included one attack on Tuesday night on a school sheltering hundreds of displaced Palestinians, which killed 27 people, officials from the Al-Aqsa Hospital said, including nine women and three children. It was the fifth time since the war began that the school in central Gaza has been struck. An early morning strike on another school turned shelter in Gaza City killed 16 people, while strikes on targets in other areas killed at least 16 others.
Trump Administration Plans to Send Migrants to Libya on a Military Flight (NYT) The Trump administration is planning to transport a group of immigrants to Libya on a U.S. military plane, according to U.S. officials, another sharp escalation in a deportation program that has sparked widespread legal challenges and intense political debate. The nationalities of the migrants were not immediately clear, but a flight to Libya carrying the deportees could leave as soon as Wednesday, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation. The decision to send deportees to Libya was striking. The country is racked with conflict, and human rights groups have called conditions in its network of migrant detention centers “horrific” and “deplorable.” The Libya operation falls in line with the Trump administration’s effort to not only deter migrants from trying to enter the country illegally but also to send a strong message to those in the country illegally that they can be deported to countries where they could face brutal conditions.
Another Navy jet falls into sea, marking fourth major mishap in months (Washington Post) A Navy fighter jet failed to land on an aircraft carrier and plummeted into the Red Sea on Tuesday, marking the fourth major mishap involving the vessel and the third loss of a fighter jet deployed with it since the warship left home last year. The F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, worth about $67 million, went overboard after an unsuccessful attempt to slow it down upon landing on the USS Harry S. Truman, the Navy said in a statement. Both aviators aboard the jet safely ejected and were rescued at sea by helicopter with minor injuries, and no one aboard the warship’s flight deck was harmed, the service said.

An Australian Blockchain Experiment: Tracking Global Almond Shipments
Following a successful 2016 trial of blockchain technology in an interbank open account transaction, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has partnered with five international and Australian companies to ship 17 tonnes of almonds from Melbourne, Australia, to Hamburg, Germany, using a new distributed ledger platform built on the Ethereum blockchain.
The Experiment
Originating in Sunraysia, the shipment made its way to Western Europe in a pioneering experiment that combined a private blockchain, smart contracts and a geotracking Internet of Things (IoT) framework to facilitate end-to-end movement of the almonds. Using the joint solution, the entire process was seamlessly tracked and verified remotely from the point of origin to delivery in real time.
Taking part in the procedure alongside the CBA were Pacific National, Olam Richards Australia Pty Ltd, OOCL Limited, Patrick Terminals and LX Group. The primary purpose of the experiment was to establish a reliable framework for digitization of the three pillars of international commerce, namely documentation, operations/logistics and finance. This was done using a custom blockchain which hosted all information regarding container location, task completion status and shipping documents.
Using the information provided by four IoT devices inside the container, transaction partners could track cargo location in real time and view real-time cargo data, such as temperature and humidity. The information was accessed through the blockchain platform, making it impervious to manipulation.
CBA Managing Director of Industrials and Logistics in Client Coverage Chris Scougall said:
“Our blockchain-enabled global trade platform experiment brought to life the idea of a modern global supply chain that is agile, efficient and transparent. We believe that blockchain can help our partners reduce the burden of administration on their businesses and enable them to deliver best-in-class services to their customers.”
In 2016, the CBA and Wells Fargo conducted the world’s first interbank open account transaction combining the application of blockchain technology, smart contracts and IoT connectivity. The transaction, which took place in partnership with Brighann Cotton involved a cotton shipment from Texas, USA, to Qingdao, China, using a private blockchain and smart contracts enabled with IoT geolocation technology.
Implementing this framework on a larger scale in the future means that international transactions can be carried out with a high level of transparency, with all parties constantly aware of the location, authentication and condition of goods in transit.
In addition to the tracking of goods and added efficiency, the blockchain-enabled supply chain also enables transaction parties to upload and access key documents required by port authorities such as the bill of lading and certificates of origin.
The CBA’s experimental blockchain platform is being built on the Ethereum protocol because of its popularity and customizable functionality. When fully set up, it will take the form of a private blockchain made up of a closed network of trusted entities.

Israeli Blockchain Start-Up Completes First International Shipment
Israeli-based blockchain start-up LogChain has completed its first full cycle of an international blockchain-backed maritime shipment.
The successful shipment of beverages from Belgium to Israel was carried out using the end-to-end digitized and tamper-proof LogChain platform which handles all aspects of the supply-chain including electronic bill of lading and Letter of Credit.
The LogChain platform reduces an estimated seven to nine percent of shipment costs and can reduce approximately two weeks of documentation time down to few minutes, removing altogether the need for original documentation using carriers.
As all features are fully orchestrated by LogChain's smart contracts and invoked by the freight-forwarder, exporter and the importer involved – they are all accessible and visible to all parties in the supply chain, until the shipment is successfully released by the shipping company.
The LogChain platform is running on Microsoft Azure cloud solution, using Ethereum. Founded in 2018, LogChain is a global supply chain and trade finance blockchain platform backed by technology and IT company Aman Group.
The shipment is not a first for the industry. On January 31, 2019, Pacific International Lines used an electronic Bill of Lading built on the IBM Blockchain Platform in a successful real-time pilot tracking shipment of mandarin oranges from China for the Lunar New Year celebrations.
In November last year, nine ocean carriers and terminal operators signed an MOU to form a consortium to develop the Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), an open digital platform based on blockchain technology. The participants include ocean carriers CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping Lines, Evergreen Marine, OOCL, and Yang Ming; terminal operators DP World, Hutchison Ports, PSA International and Shanghai International Port; and software company CargoSmart. The new platform will connect all stakeholders, including carriers, terminal operators, customs agencies, shippers and logistics service providers to digitize their supply chain.

Commonwealth Bank Turns to IoT and Blockchain Tech for Cross-border Trading
In today’s world there is little surprise that more and more traditional financial institutions are taking a decision to implement the latest technologies and to go in for blockchain.
The latest news has come from Australia. The Commonwealth Bank conducted an experiment with internet of things (IoT) and blockchain technologies. As a result the bank managed to carry out a successful shipment of 17 tonnes of almonds from Australia to Germany.
The shipment was tracked via a private blockchain platform designed by the bank on top of the Ethereum network. As it has been announced, such companies as Olam Orchards Australia Pty Ltd, Pacific National, the Port of Melbourne, Patrick Terminals and shipping carrier OOCL Limited also participated in the project. Hardware and software support was provided by Australian IoT provider LX Group.
Apart from storing shipping container data, completed tasks and shipping documents, the purpose-built blockchain-based platform made it possible to digitize three key components of the trading process: operations, documentation and finance.
Moreover, the partners had an opportunity to view the location of the shipment from the very beginning till the final destination. Via four installed IoT devices, it was even possible to monitor the conditions of shipment including temperature and humidity inside the container.
As for the quality of data obtained, the bank’s statement reads:
“This level of data provided partners in the supply chain with a greater level of transparency and efficiency regarding the location, condition and authentication of the goods being transported”.
The participants of the project could also upload and view bill of landing, certificates of origin and other documents required by customs onto the private blockchain. It is also worth mentioning that the experiment was conducted without ceasing of any existing processes.
Emma Roberts, Supply Chain Manager at Olam Orchards Australia Pty Ltd which is one of the participants, commented their experiment the following way:
“Trade inefficiency can be extremely detrimental to our business. It is vital that as an industry, we look at emerging technology for ways to enhance the supply chain to develop a more transparent and efficient platform. This project has shown that through collaboration from all parts of the supply chain that this can be achieved.”
Holding of such a cutting-edge experiment is a new prove of the CBA’s commitment to offer market leading innovative solutions which would drive the industry changes. In 2016, the bank started its way of innovations, when together with Wells Fargo and Brighann Cotton the CBA completed the first global trade between two independent banks utilizing blockchain and smart contract technologies.
“We thrive on the opportunity to work with our customers to help them adapt to changing industry trends, particularly technology. It was key to us that we partner with businesses across the entire supply chain, so we could get a holistic picture of how this technology could impact and improve the efficiency of the transport and logistics industry,” CBA managing director of Industrials and Logistics in Client Coverage Chris Scougall said.
Meanwhile, CBA is not the first to turn to blockchain searching for shipping enhanced efficiency. Another project, not so large scale, but no less needed one, also addressed the issue of inefficient deliveries. Blockchain-based parcel delivery platform Triwer goes beyond just delivering parcels currently working on making shipment processes not only more controllable, cost effective and resource-efficient, but also goes as far as to turn the industry into more environmentally-friendly one.
