The Hunt lore
I hardly ever write out long form stuff about my OCs, and tumblr’s a good place to practice that (word count limits on bluesky hurting me lol)
I’ve shared a lot about As Above, So Below, which makes sense as I’ve had that world for a few years now, but a few months ago I created another oc world - The Hunt, a supernatural story set in 2007ish. It’s been a fun break from the medieval fantasy!

Everything about the early 2000s is the same - flip phones, frosted tips, and CDs errwhere… except there’s magical folk secretly living their lives. Some have communities, some are loners interacting with normal humans. Any fairytale being has potential to appear in The Hunt; werewolves, witches, fairies, ghosts, vampires, unicorns, etc. But, everyone does appear human!
Some quick thoughts I’ve had. Most of these are classic powers from their fairytales:
Witches: Classic powers such as telekinesis, elemental control, healing, rhyming spells
Faeries: extremely lucky folk, usually smaller height
Ghosts: any haunting tale up for grabs (poltergeist, kappa, banshee, etc). Most have a singular purpose influenced by an important life decision or how they died
Unicorns: extremely beautiful people, sometimes to their own detriment
Werewolves: transformations are linked to their emotions, particularly at night. The werewolf form is painful and feral. Can be any canine

Nell is a faerie, but doesn’t know how his luck works; it’s very passive for him. He is a bit of a free spirit and couch surfs (in exchange for helping around the owner’s house), flitting around day jobs but always managing to make juuust enough to live. His luck helped him escape The Doctor and somehow navigate to safety, whether that’s getting to a location or avoiding danger.
His fae luck is what The Doctor is after to harvest, and the boy is proving to be his most challenging target yet.

TY is a werewolf, something he is very ashamed of and does his best to keep under control. He lives with his single werewolf mother who constantly tells him it’s his duty to keep werewolves (and magic folk) a secret (possibly hinting at something terrible she did to her former husband). TY takes this duty very seriously and goes out of his way to help magic folk if their secret is in danger.
He masks his fears by being larger than life and appearing as a steady protector to his companions. Seeing Nell terrified and injuried scares him so much he almost transforms, hence his furry elbows, claws, and fangs in the piece below

Dylan is a witch, but wanted to break away from expectations by going to sunny California and being a marine biologist. She left her tiny hometown with much fanfare, burning bridges because she was totally going to make it big. After a bout with depression and too many failed job interviews, she returns to her small hometown humiliated. Dylan’s retreated to her old habits, sticking to her childhood friend’s side and pretending the whole world is against her. She is incredibly mean spirited as compensation for her own failures.

When out-of-towner Nell butts into her TY time, she is initially terrible to him but also spots an opportunity to befriend someone who doesn’t know her (and her failures) like everyone else in the small town.
Dylan used to be a damn good witch but her own self doubt has left her powers stunted. Helping Nell, and stopping The Doctor, might be the purpose she desperately needs to recenter herself.

The Doctor is a nightmare entity that hunts magical folks to harvest their powers. Black market buyers will trade him souls/evil objects/future victims for his wares.
Doc stalks his prey in their dreams, eventually teleporting them to his cold storage basement facility once they’re terrified enough. He doesn’t have a motive for the hunt, only that it’s his ghostly purpose.

His design is actually based on a nightmare I had, where a figure with glowing organs was chasing me. I made him hot to scare away the nightmare lol.
Loved the character design too much not to reuse, though admittedly he is an Unnecessarily Hot OC compared to the other characters… ah well, let the “author’s barely disguised fetishes” commence.

My objective for October was to catch up on recaps and get through the big update for phase 3 of the first Justice/Arcana case.
I didn't accomplish that!
I didn't accomplish that because I set that objective for myself the day before This Shit Happened. Since then, I've been scrambling like crazy to put out fire after fire at this company as it tries to break away from a shared services environment and get all its products working on a separate infrastructure, which has been a fucking nightmare of working like 10-hour days for the whole month. I get done dealing with this stuff and I'm fried, with no energy to do anything after work. It's a waking nightmare and it's gone on for like a month.
The nightmare isn't over yet- things are still not okay at work, there's a bunch of products that have no devs working on them, a bunch of things that are going to break unless I find clever workarounds to substitute for their dependencies, and like half a dozen random bureaucrats who've chosen right now to stick their nose in and demand we do everything differently to conform to the way things are done at the parent company which we are- hypothetically- financially and operationally completely distinct from otherwise they're not allowed to count as a nonprofit. It's incredibly annoying and we have no actual management because the Interim Technology Director they brought on only cares about switching over the phone system and sales+marketing software and shit and has no plan for or interest in what to do about our actual products. No leadership means I just have to pick priorities myself based on how much trouble I'll be in if shit breaks, a quality that hopefully correlates with how much random people are panicking at me about it.
There has been... progress. Some things have been sorted out, and I've mostly handed off my LMS work for the old company (I wrote like 28 pages of documentation for this crap), and I've gotten a better picture of what's on fire and some ideas for how to put it out. But this is... probably going to continue through November, and I have a sneaking suspicion that when our Transition Services Agreement expires in December a lot of unexpected shit is going to break and we're going to be in panic mode again.
(On the plus side, I did negotiate for that raise my old boss couldn't get me, so that does technically cross something off my list for this month.)
So... I'm definitely not getting everything done this year. It's a shame, but... I mean, I did come up with fourteen new years' resolutions and followed through on most of them, which isn't nothing- and the failure is a result of an Unexpected Massive Life Change that was basically out of my control, so I can't feel too down on myself about it.
To reorient my remaining tasks, which I still want to shoot for by the end of the year...
I want to get the next big J/A update out, still. Once that's out it's a straight shot to the finish.
I want to do, like, four or five more TFJ recaps and get through the Dead Jane sub-arc.
I want to play and solve The Sekimeiya (probably going to try to do that this month, for November).
I'm giving up on...
completely catching up on recap logs, which I learned was a substantially bigger task than I planned for
running TPIVW games, which- in addition to Scheduling Adults Being Hard, I also can't really put out the call for it while I still have this thing unresolved with Snake, who... eesh, that relationship has severely deteriorated and I don't know how to fix it and trying to run games with him in the group like nothing happened would Not Work, and I can't just kick him from that without making it a flashpoint of things getting even worse. It's maybe a solvable problem but I can't dedicate mental energy to it while everything else is still this crazy.
finishing case 1 of J/A entirely- there'll still need to be a run of updates once all the evidence is on the table, and a climax which'll take a bunch of additional art. Confident I can get through it in early 2024 and launch case 2 sometime that same year, though.
