Summary:
It starts when he’s sliding Videodrome across the counter at Family Video for the 7th time this month hoping to god no one’s noticed but reassured no one cares enough about his miserable ass to see it as a cry for help which it assuredly is not. Buckley and Harrington are there, which he knew they would be, but also hates, but also knows he’s less likely to be hassled in public when they’re around since the slur yelling and trash throwing hasn’t quite reached its P.C. average and he’s tired of having to check his brakes every time he parks anywhere for too long. He is not going there because he knows that’s where they are. If anyone were to ask. Which they won’t.

WHACKING TEACHER CLEARED BY COURT

Barnsley Chronicle and South Yorkshire News, 22 August 1959
'Punishment deserved, properly meted out'
THE decision of a 27-years-old school teacher to punish a boy by hitting him with a rubber gym shoe was upheld by Barnsley West Riding Magistrates on Wednesday, when they dismissed a case of assault brought against the teacher by the boy's mother.
Mr. W. Brown (presiding) said the Bench felt that the punishment was deserved and had been properly administered by the teacher, Leslie Albert Buttle, 49, Caxton Street, Barnsley.
Buttle had pleaded not guilty and was defended by Mr. V. Way.
The boy, Michael Allen, aged 12, of 22, Belmont, Darfield Road, a pupil at the Cudworth Roman Catholic School, alleged in answer to Mr. J. D. Driver (prosecuting) that after being sent out of class with another boy, he was taken to the woodwork room, where Buttle struck him six or seven hard blows with a rubber gym shoe.
He further alleged that his mother, who later examined him, found a bruise at the bottom of his back.
P.C. Finucane said he examined the boy and found a bruise three inches long and about an inch wide at the bottom of his back.
When he later interviewed the defendant, Buttle said to him: "I certainly didn't hit him where the bruise was. The punishment was merited and I told him why he was punished."
In Court, Buttle said that he entered the class and found Allen and another boy standing talking to a girl pupil. He told them three times to sit down and they took no notice, so he told them to leave the room, saying he could wait no longer.
He told them to report to him at break, but he had to go looking for them and when he asked them why they had not reported they started mumbling and were very truculent.
He took them to the woodwork room and made them, in turn, bend over, and he hit each boy six times with a rubber gym shoe.
Neither of them wept or showed any signs of distress and the other boy did not complain at any time of being bruised.
Asked by Mr Driver if he had tried to find out if Allen could have got the bruise in any other way, he replied: "Unworthy as I was, I pursued my profession as a teacher and not as a detective."
He had earlier told the Court that Mrs. Allen abused him when she went up to the school, and told him that he was not fit to be a teacher.
Mr. Way said a parent entrusted a child to the discipline of a school and a teacher was entitled to administer reasonable corporal punishment.
The Bench had to decide whether the teacher had exercised his discretion properly in this case, and he asked them to accept the evidence of a "perfectly honest and sincere man" who said that he had administered the punishment he thought reasonable.

The Keeper of Virtue's Reservoir
From the Imperial Archive of House Elrose,
Drakeshadow, Nihiran - an Annexed Territory of the Graneyean Empire,
Records perused and up-dated for accuracy as of Desnus, 5237 P.C.
Lord Petros Graham Kaison Beckett Megalos, Sixth of His Name, is the current keeper of the Imperial treasury of Drakeshadow, known as Virtue's Reservoir, and the current head of House Megalos, a vassal house of House Grimgard.
Tracing their origins back to the isles of Thavma, with first mentions of the house cropping up around 3487 P.C., House Megalos is among the few noble houses held in high regard to be founded and continued by members of a lesser race, in this case humans and half-elves. Though their lifespans are ephemeral compared to houses held in equal esteem, this has made them exceptionally adept at indexing knowledge related to the myriad magical items requisitioned by House Elrose's inquisitions into other nations.
Lord Petros, a half-elven lord with somewhat nonapparent features, stands at the 21st appointed keeper of Virtue's Reservoir, succeeding his father, Lord Kaion Megalos, as his only son. At his current of-record age of 48 years, he has kept record and custody of all magical artefacts in the Empire's possession for the past 15 years.
Lord Petros has sired but one child with Lady Karya, consort of House Megalos - a son named Yorgos. As his son is twelve years of age, he is being prepared to take over the role of his father, when such a time comes as Lord Petros is no longer able to perform his duties.
As of Gozran, 5237 P.C., associates of House Megalos are currently pending investigation, regarding several articles disappearing from Virtue's Reservoir. Lady Karya is suspected to have fled the city after an adjacent investigation of her involvement with a group of undesirables convening in Drakeshadow.
Lord Petros and Master Yorgos both deny any involvement with such a group, and Lord Megalos has proclaimed an active effort in locating and reclaiming the lost artefacts. He claims many of them have found their way into the hands of high-ranking soldiers in the forces of the Albarea Duchy, yet claims to face difficulty in tracking down the other artefacts in the wake of Lady Elrose's suspected abduction/assassination.

THE UNDERAPPRECIATED SIGNIFICANCE OF HYPERPOP IN THE DIGITAL AGE
In the 21st century, increasing corporatization and its effects make the music landscape often impossible to navigate, for artists and consumers alike. One genre, however, has emerged somewhat unseen as a radical and disruptive force– hyperpop. The recent announcement that revolutionary label P.C. Music would be shutting down new music production and only revisiting archival content from here on out, I decided to write a bit about an art phenomena that I believe is more important than it might let on.
While often written off as musically immature and ultra-niche, hyperpop challenges traditional notions of rhythm, melody, sampling, and genre boundaries with grace– not to mention artistic philosophy, especially in the context of an infinite internet. At its core, it is a product of the uniquely “free” digital age and late-stage capitalism. Hyperpop, short for "hyperactive pop," took inspiration from, for one, 2000s rave and electronic music culture, growing into itself in online forums, SoundCloud uploads, and the alternative DIY aesthetic of the early 2010s.
In the early 2010s, artists like SOPHIE, Arca, and AG Cook (who collaborate(d) regularly) began experimenting with a frenetic, maximalist approach to production. It often features exaggerated, pitch-shifted vocals, glitchy electronic beats, and a disregard for traditional song structures, incorporating elements from genres such as hip-hop, pop, electronic, and experimental noise. These blends reflect the diversity of musical influences and globalized nature of the internet, and usage of platforms like SoundCloud and Band-camp to share music across the world bypass traditional labels and gatekeepers. Not only does their music take full advantage of the internet’s infinite and hyper-accessible reserve of hundreds of years of music, individual samples, electronic tools and instruments, but it’s also a meta reflection on this abundance.
"Hey QT," was an early collaborative project between A.G. Cook, SOPHIE, Harriet Pittard, and performance artist Hayden Dunham, who appeared as BladeRunner-esque singer QT. This track, with its catchy, hyperactive melody and playful, consumerist lyrics, stood as an ironic reflection of the digital age's excesses. "Hey QT" didn't just embrace the internet era; it satirized it with an ironic promotional campaign, including a music video that was an ad for a fake energy drink, that questioned the lines between music, “content”, and commerciality. "Hey QT" became a symbol of subverting expectations and utilizing the irreplaceable digital canvas, all while critiquing the commodification of music and fame that is exaggerated by that very digital realm.
One of the key drivers of Hyperpop era is the P.C. Music collective, founded by A.G. Cook back in the early days of the genre. P.C. Music's artists have pushed the boundaries of what is considered "pop" music. They provide a more IRL commune for artists who challenge listeners to question what defines authentic music and invite them into a both surreal and hyperreal world of sound.
Hyperpop trancents borders, and reflects the globalization of music, allowing artists from all over the world to exchange and collaborate. This global exchange of ideas has enriched the genre, leading to a vibrant ecosystem of artists who each contribute their own twist to the hyperpop sound, so much so that it now has taken the shape that artistic eras usually do by splitting into different factions that are growing into their own genres.
Many of us may know the duo 100 Gecs– a slightly more angry and hard-edged hyperpop duo that revolutionized the genre with their surprising and somewhat random main-stream popularity around 2020. As the internet often manifests, 100 Gecs eventually fell from the type of widespread (basic?) social media buzz they held, but have progressed into their prior alternativity– this time with more artistic prowess, and a critically praised name for themselves. While it may seem as though the musicians were simply dropped back where they were before their “15 minutes”, the fact that hyperpop had its moment in the main stream limelight and is now developing beyond itself is significant. Many believe it is the reason for P.C. music’s halt of new production and reflection/remixing on the past decade of its work. Its time has come!
Cook himself has certainly changed. He continues to produce various levels of hyperpop and electronic music– the less intense of which have gradually made their way into the main stream. (Charli XCX; Kim Petras; recently, Beyoncé)
Hyperpop’s boundary-pushing spirit and innovative production techniques will likely continue to influence mainstream and alternative music alike, pushing the envelope of what is possible within the realm of sound. It serves as a testament to the power of the internet and a thrilling chapter in the evolution of music.

i choose data set (NESARC)
i choose this topic ( nicotine dependence )
i interested in exploring the association between smoking behavior and nicotine dependence
whether two topics are associated with one another ?
I believe that they are positively associated.
That is to say: the more an individual smokes, the more likely they are to be nicotine-dependent.
how much a person needs to smoke in order to be nicotine dependent ?
i continue to read through the NESARC code book and find that smoking behavior has also been measured in this sample. So, I take a step similar to one that I just took when choosing nicotine dependence. That is, identify the variables that measure the second topic(smoking behavior).
Research Question :
What are the long-term effects of nicotine dependence on physical and mental health, and what strategies can be effective in preventing and treating nicotine addiction ?
Hypothesis:
Individuals who begin using nicotine at an early age are more likely to develop nicotine dependence compared to those who start later in life.
NESARC Codebook Variables:
variables related to Nicotine Dependence: life-time nicotine dependence and nicotine dependence in the past 12 months.
variables that measure the second topic(smoking behavior):
cigarette smoking status, usual frequency, and usual quantity.
Literature Review :
Nicotine dependence is a complex condition that plays a crucial role in smoking behavior. Understanding the relationship between nicotine dependence and smoking behavior is essential for developing effective prevention and cessation strategies. This literature review aims to explore the current research surrounding nicotine dependence and its impact on smoking behavior.
Results:
Relationship between nicotine dependence and smoking initiation:
Several studies have shown that individuals who develop nicotine dependence are more likely to initiate smoking at an earlier age.
Nicotine dependence is a significant predictor of continued smoking behavior and progression to regular, heavy smoking.

“I started to wonder about the history of Latin”
This post was written by Natasha Skorupski, a Department of Classics Intern in Archives & Special Collections for the Spring of 2022.
During my internship with the Hillman library and the Classics Department of the University of Pittsburgh I worked in the Archives & Special Collections, looking over Latin manuscripts. While looking through these I started to wonder about the history of Latin and how the spoken language fell yet the written word continued.
(Above) Evangeliorum quattuor Codex Durmachensis or The Book of Durrow, Olten: Urs Graf; sole distributors in the United States: P.C. Duschnes, New York by Arturus Aston Luce, 1960 facsimile. Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System.
Due to that I have found out the following information. Latin is thought to be derived from ancient Greek and Italic languages. Italy used to be made up of many different tribes that spoke many different languages, and these languages are called Italic languages today. The first evidence of Latin is an inscription on a cloak pin that was found from the sixth century BCE. On the pin it says, “Manius me fhefhaked Numasioi” which translates to “Manius made me [this] for Numerius”. The first literary records of Latin have been dated back to 250-100 BCE. The popularity of Latin increased with the rise of Roman political power. This spread was initially in Italy and then continued to most of Western Europe and parts of coastal Africa.
Latin has been classified into three groups. There is the written Latin, oratorical Latin (public speaking), and colloquial Latin (common speaking) (When Did Latin Die? and Why). The later Latin saw the greatest variation in its use and continuous divergence from it eventually evolved into Vulgar Latin. From Vulgar Latin we get the Romance Languages we know today, which include Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian.
The beginning of the end of the western Roman empire occurred in 395 CE. It fell for multiple reasons, some of them being military invasions, economic troubles, overreliance on enslaved labor, overexpansion and overspending of the military, political instability and corruption, among others (Andrews). With this fall came the decline of colloquial and Vulgar Latin.
There was a small period of resurrection for Latin under the “Roman Emperor” Charlemagne during 768-814AD. At this point in time, Latin was spoken, written, and read predominantly in religious settings as Italian, French and Spanish were rapidly evolving, allowing for a great decline of Latin (When Did Latin Die? and Why). During the mid-14th century, the Black Death Plague occurred. It killed millions of people, including numerous scholars and professors, creating a negative ripple effect on the entire education system (When Did Latin Die? and Why).
During the 15th and 16th centuries, there was another slight resurgence as people started to read Latin literature from classical authors. This was the time of the renaissance that spread mostly through Italy, France and later Britain. With the greater developments in science, Latin terminology was put into place as a way to regulate findings and encourage international research (When Did Latin Die? and Why).

(Above) Cosmographia Petri Apiani. Antwerp: Veneunt Antuerpiæ Gregorio Bontio sub Scuto Basiliensi .. by P. & Gemma Apian, 1553. Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System.
Latin was seen as a status symbol at this point—you were seen as educated if you could read and write it. Though it was no longer spoken, it was used predominantly in literature and religion. Until the 19th century, Latin was a requirement for all that attended college. College was usually attended by white males of a privileged background (When Did Latin Die? and Why). However, this changed around the mid 1960s when the younger generation decided they also shared the right to higher education.
Today very few people can read Latin, even fewer can write it, and almost no one speaks it. However, it is one of the official languages of Vatican City and plays a vital role in Catholicism. Latin words are all over Catholic scripture and there are many recited terms that come from it (Is Latin a Dead Language? Let's Explore Why?).

A fun fact, Pope Francis is the most influential Latin speaker today with about 40 million followers between his multiple accounts that vary in languages. One of these accounts posts solely in Latin! With his bio stating “Tuus adventus in paginam publicam Papae Francisci breviloquentis optatissimus est” which roughly translates to “Your arrival to the public page of the Tweeting Pope Francis is most welcome” (Pope Francis).
Latin words also dominate in modern science as names of medicine, drugs, diseases, body parts, and it is especially used in binomial nomenclature (the system for naming plants and animals). It is also greatly prevalent in the legal field. Amicus curiae, habeas corpus, and ex post facto being just a few of the more common ones. A fun fact is the jury comes from the Latin word “jurare” meaning “to swear” (Is Latin a Dead Language? Let's Explore Why?).
Latin is a dead language as it is no longer spoken. However it is not extinct, and still can be encountered more than most people in the world today would expect.
