Já me gasta uma boa energia para lidar com pessoas, odiaria fazer isso num desentendimento ou algo do tipo.

Falando assim pareço séria? Nervosa? Escuto com frequência que pareço ser ambos. Na verdade sou muito "risadinha" e odeio admitir, mas faço piada nos piores momentos: quando me sinto desconfortável em geral. E embora eu já tenha aprendido a ser "apresentável" socialmente, meu nível de introversão é enorme: sempre que eu puder evitar interação física social, por favor. Mas online eu falo até demais, se deixar.

Também dizem que eu sou duas caras. Não de falsidade, mas que a dualidade entre a calma e nervosa, a criança de 5 anos e anciã. E bem lembrado: tem pelo menos 7 Bai Suzhen principais aqui dentro brigando por poder, e elas são bem diferentes entre si. Todas são eu.

JUSTIFICATIVA: Quando penso no meu passado, dois eventos brotam na minha mente, vívidos, com cheiros e sensações:

O primeiro evento é de quando fui selecionada para participar do grupo pop de 4 garotas, “4 Seasons”, após participar de um programa de cantores amadores, em 2000. Naquela época, eu era só uma garota de 14 anos vinda de uma família de artistas, levando meus sonhos na bolsa. Eu não estava nem aí de estar “surfando” no sucesso deles, eu só queria performar e ser admirada pela minha arte.

Porém, a memória é, especificamente, de quando me nomearam “Rainie”. Como “rainy”, “chuvosa”. Me senti lisonjeada, pois sempre preferi dias chuvosos a dias calorentos como outra membro ficou conhecida, "Sunnie''. Mas haviam decidido esse nome apenas por causa das personalidades que “deveríamos ter”, não por sermos quem éramos. Antes de selecionarem as garotas, já tinham todo o marketing e conceito prontos. Não éramos nada além de produtos nas mãos deles. Após me falarem todo o "conceito da Ranie”, minha personagem, fui treinada para interpretá-la bem. A mulher que me apresentou tudo isso tinha cara de nojenta e cheiro de perfume doce, coisa que odeio.

Felizmente, ou infelizmente? O grupo não foi pra frente. Mas eu fui. Me tornei parte do elenco de apresentadores de um programa de TV local em Taipei. De lá, me tornei atriz, sem esperar mais do que um pequeno espaço para lançar minha arte. O drama que estreei como protagonista bombou, o que me deu a coragem que eu precisava para voltar à música quase 5 anos depois. As vendas foram absurdas perto do que eu e minha manager esperávamos. Mais de 1,5 milhão de cópias no leste e sudeste da Ásia? Eu com 19 anos estava pasma.

Porém, algo realmente me incomodava: eu continuava sendo “Ranie”, Rainie Bai, não Bai Suzhen. Sabe, meu nome é como o da cobra branca na lenda chinesa, ele é lindo! Meus avós colocaram meu nome assim por causa da lenta. Por que eu não o usava? Bem, Rainie Bai caiu no gosto das pessoas independente do fracasso do projeto das 4 Seasons e eu tinha muita falta de confiança e maturidade para me impor. E, bom, não é como se meu contrato e minha gravadora incentivassem que eu fosse sincera. No entanto, eu estava crescendo e lançando mais álbuns e sendo protagonista em novas séries, e até filmes.

Eu estava crescendo e falando mais. Quando estreei um filme romântico e lésbico, fui questionada de todos os lados sobre minha sexualidade e sobre o tema. Rainie Bai desviou da maior parte das perguntas, falando em como estava focada em sua carreira, o que não era era bem mentira. Eu já havia brigado para começar a usar meu nome real, já havia feito uma tour pela Ásia falando com meus fãs e lhes dizendo sobre como eu não aguentava mais a pressão de não ser eu mesma, minha manager já havia pedido demissão e minha gravadora não sabia mais o que fazer comigo. Eu só queria viver da minha arte sem ter que fingir ser alguém que não sou. A memória é, especificamente, da minha última conversa com o presidente da gravadora:

“Sente-se, Rainie” disse ele. Eu obviamente o corrigi pouco antes de me sentar. O insuportável cheiro do cigarro de filtro vermelho dele tomou o ambiente, e pela expressão dele, ele não fazia ideia do porquê havíamos chegado nessa situação. Após muito papo de elevador, ele me disse a verdade, e eu quase saí correndo por não aguentar mais qualquer palavra vinda da boca dele:

“Você não faz mais parte dessa empresa. Quando sair, nossos advogados vão te dar papéis para assinar. É uma pena, mas foi bom enquanto durou, Rainie.”

“É Bai Suzhen, seu velho machista do caralho. E eu prefiro ser pobre e desconhecida do que ficar nessa indústria falsa da porra. Vai tomar no seu cu! Espero nunca mais ter o desprazer de lidar com você.” Eu disse ao voltar correndo pra sala dele, após assinar os papéis e rasgar alguns na frente dele.

Eu obviamente sumi da mídia. Minha mãe fez questão de mover os pauzinhos dela para que eu não fosse mais citada pela, mas só porque isso iria atrapalhar a carreira dela. Embora as pessoas não tenham me esquecido, eu fiz questão de continuar sumida e me focar nos estudos. Após Artes Performáticas, me especializei em dança ainda em Taiwan. Me mantive na ativa por baixo dos panos, pois sob o nickname de “white serpent”, vendi (e ainda vendo) composições para artistas em toda a Ásia.

PRESENTE: Ao conseguir meu diploma, eu vim para Wangshu (especificamente por ter me apaixonado pela ilha numa viagem e querer sair de Taiwan) e fundei o White Snake Studio: uma academia de dança e teatro, situada em Sudo/Oldtown. Aqui, além das aulas performáticas, damos aulas de danças como ballet, dança clássica, jazz, dança moderna, street, stiletto, folclóricas chinesas, etc. Anexo ao estúdio, eu tenho um estúdio próprio onde continuo os trabalhos da figura “white serpent”, que evoluiu para não apenas composições musicais, mas também coreografias, e assim ganho a vida.

Já faz mais de 10 anos que saí da indústria do entretenimento. Embora não seja raro me reconhecerem, não é comum. Nas redes sociais, ainda tenho um certo número de fãs que dizem esperar a minha “volta”. Alguns eu conheço de verdade, pois já vieram ao estúdio terem aulas comigo. Também tenho um instagram bastante movimentado, seja por causa do estúdio, minha carreira, ou meu cachorro. No mais, não sei mais nem como poderia voltar a ter uma “vida pública”, pois considero essencial minha privacidade.

Eu cuido do estúdio, dou aulas de dança à terceira idade segunda, quarta e sábado de manhã, dou aulas no estúdio todos os dias exceto domingo e quarta e essa é minha vida.

DESEJOS: Gosto de como a dança e a atuação desenvolvem o autoconhecimento e o amor próprio nas pessoas, e assim como eu aprendi a me ver com bons olhos através da performance e da interpretação de personagens(estou falando de você, Rainie Bai!), eu desejo ajudar a desenvolver essas mesmas coisas nas pessoas. Bem como bem estar, saúde e, até mesmo, vaidade. Poucas coisas são mais satisfatórias que “fazer carão” no espelho após executar uma coreografia sem falhas de stiletto!

Mas acho que… Eu queria aprender a não ser tão workaholic. Parece que vivi assim a vida toda para não ser atingida por toda a rejeição que tive quando parei de ser brinquedo da indústria. Parece que não me permito sentir essa e outras coisas, para não me sentir fora do controle de mim mesma. Eu queria ser mais espontânea. Eu queria me dar bem com minha mãe, apesar de parecer tarde. Eu queria sair com pessoas que não querem apenas ir pra cama casualmente após meia conversa. Eu queria tanta coisa!

E por achar que quero demais, eu prefiro me focar no meu dia a dia, e não nos meus “quereres” e estou bem assim.

A REVOLUTIONARY STUDENT LEADER: IN A TVET COLLEGE

A tribute to cde Ongeza “TO” Mpiti

“While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas” – Thomas Sankara

The weather mysteriously changed after a fairly hot sunny day. It happened immediately when his funeral proceeded to the third phase: it was facilitated by the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) Regional Organizer cde Philasande Ngcobo who marshaled like a lightning with every word he uttered meticulously from his mouth. Suddenly the sky reshuffled itself, first slow merely drizzling and then the rain started to pour really hard forcing us to close the sides of the wide tent and as it was initially so hot that only the top part was covered.

At his burial, he was graced by multitudes of thousands of the masses and various leaders and former servants of PASMA and PAC and that of other political formations because he had the ability to serve all students and in particular the Afrikan land dispossessed masses regardless of their political affiliations.  

When I consider the opening quotation, I am more convinced that the Captain of forces Thomas Sankara had in his mind the name splendidly known as cde “TO” when he uttered such profundity and thought provoking-words: “while revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered, you cannot kill ideas.” History chooses to recall its rare breed cadre who through praxis comes once in a lifetime or perhaps in a generation.

I have decided to pen down a few words because rage and emotions have come down. I have been mourning as the whole of Azania should because it has lost a calibre of a thinker, a strategist, an organizer, and a disciplinary revolutionary student leader. Mangaliso Sobukwe challenges us that it is meet that we speak the truth before we die. Cde TO was murdered by barbarians, imbeciles, morons, neo-colonialist puppets hired by King Hintsa TVET College managers who stabbed him trice in the process striking him instantly in the heart. Let us recall the full events.

His life revolves around being convicted to fighting for injustices that an Afrikan child was brutally subjected to in an institution of higher learning such as King Hintsa TVET College in the rural of Eastern Cape. He stood up and fought ruthless college managers’ conscious of the consequences of his action. This revolutionary cadre was suspended on several occasions yet impressively through his magnetic intelligentsia he managed to defeat his rivals and enemies with the student masses defending him and he successfully emerged victoriously and became a student at the college. This to a reader should highlight that cde TO could not be killed politically for his activism by managers in the college.

Furthermore, it is critical to allusion that jurisprudentially the college tried to dismantle and discombobulate such an uncompromising student leader through long court cases and senseless court interdicts. As expected and anticipated no legal battles could deter the revolutionary spirit of cde TO. He frequently and consistently did overcome this treacherous storm through winning those court battles. The emphasis is that again cde TO could not be silenced in court by the satanic college management.

The writer was present at the Memorial Service of cde TO in Butterworth, Zazulwana village as organized by the PAC TN Tantala Region on 19 February 2020 which packed the Methodist church to its fullest capacity. The speakers centrally mentioned that this martyr of the TVET Colleges in occupied Azania was a man who was cantankerous yet who stood for the truth. For him being alone when uttering the truth was not a problem because he was principled. He simply had a backbone for the truth. It came when he executed his revolutionary mandate to mobilize, educate and strive for socialist education in the vicious institution of higher learning.

In his campus, the residences were quite minimal as they still are now and utterly in horrific despicable positions. In 2012 when Africanists from PASMA Ibika Branch arrive there they managed to ensure that cde TO would eradicate such when Teko adopted the program of action of the branch for the student movement. Students were subjected to paying finances before registration and cde TO fought against that as a pioneer of #FeesMustFall during its epoch in 2015 and 2016. Today as I articulate this: one may simply register without paying a cent and many residences have been built.

Both PASMA Teko and PASMA Ibika has developed a formidable bound of revolutionary action. Walking a few kilometers from Ibika township to Teko campus is our ordinary regular road. This is why in our recent Ibika branch meeting when we paid tribute to cde TO it was emphasized that in PASMA Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in Butterworth we have lost one of our own. During strikes and campaigns, we have always worked closely.

Cde TO besides having served twice as the Chairperson of PASMA Teko Branch, he was also elected twice in the PASMA Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) of Eastern Cape first in 2017 and then again in 2018. On the national spaces, he is widely known for the incredible contribution he has made to unite and rally students under the liberatory banner of Pan-Africanism in his campus and throughout all corners of occupied Azania.

He is a tried and tested revolutionary student leader per excellence. I first met him physically in 2017 when the student masses of the people at King Hintsa Teko were engaged in mass action, the institution was totally shutdown. We had a plenary meeting on how to intensify this struggle. Interestingly, regardless of his capabilities and capacity as a leader, he always asked assistance when it was necessary from other comrades.

More recently in King Hintsa Msobomvu, the students did shutdown the college because they wanted to get rid of unprofessional and corrupt lecturers who exploited our sisters sexually in order to progress them academically. Subsequently the meeting between students and the institution was arranged inclusive to parents, political structures and Department of Higher Education and Training. Cde TO played a pivotal role through exposing managers with the truth through always sharpening contradictions. He was branded an agitator who stood as a difference for three years between students and management from going to the elections with the imposed SRC Constitution.

I make no apologies for uttering that cde TO was viciously murdered by the college management.

He truly resemblance a life that is worth an embodiment of service, suffering and sacrifice for the Afrikan cultural revolution in academia. He has waged battles in   lecture halls to such an extent that a notorious narcissistic lecturer once remarked: “for as long as I am a lecturer here you will never pass my module.” Other students have gone to graduate while cde TO could not. That is not to say, he was not smart or intelligent enough but simply devoted to the noblest cause of serving and sacrificing all he had for an Afrikan working class student. This is why when they wrote exams he was suspended from the university as a student.

At his Memorial Service hosted by King Hintsa Teko campus on 20 February 2020 I was fortunate enough to grace the podium and I narrated that for us to recall this remarkable astonishing selfless revolutionary student leader then we should emulate his vigorous firmness and soberness like when he critically engaged on matters of whatever nature. I argued that he lived and implemented the PAC motto: serve, suffer and sacrifice as an outstanding revolutionary student leader.

He should be remembered as a national Azanian student leader murdered by the charterist serving settler neo-colonial masters. In national gatherings of PASMA such as elective congresses, he proved to be way ahead of his peers through having the ability to mobilize resources. Many comrades, footsoldiers, leaders and members of the student movement will always tell you how cde TO assisted them with resources to survive when they suffered in congresses. He has demonstrated regularly and purposefully his leadership capabilities when he went the extra mile to assist the next person without expecting to be glorified or worshipped.

Sons and daughters of the stolen motherland Afrika we must never stop singing the name “TO” in TVET Colleges and more broadly in the revolutionary student movement, namely: the Pan Africanist Student Movement of Azania (PASMA). As he was ideologically, politically and administravely groomed and grounded by the material conditions of those spaces.

At this point, no murderous criminal has been incarcerated for the heinous unforgivable and unforgettable act of senselessly denying the Azanian revolution one of its finest sons of the soil. Cde Nkosikhona Mlozini his former colleague in the PASMA PEC in the province when he spoke unapologetically at the funeral launch a campaign #JusticeForTO to fight for the soul of both PASMA Teko and cde TO. By virtue of killing him they have not killed the ideas embodied within him but only silenced a man. We must rally behind this clarion call and ensure those lunatic cowards pay whatever price we shall see fit. If we dare allow it to be business as normal as if things will ever be the same again we would have been traitors of the Azanian people and Afrikan at large as it has been denied its shinning uncompromising revolutionary.

Tower Safety Week will run from 12 – 17 November 2017.

Chadwick becomes first woman racer to win MRF Challenge

Jamie Chadwick became the first female driver to win the MRF Challenge with three wins from five races at the championship’s finale last weekend at the Madras Motor Race Track on the outskirts of Chennai.

The 20-year-old Briton had gone into the weekend 18 points behind erstwhile championship leader Max Defourny. But even as the Briton hit her stride, the Belgian faltered when it mattered. After winning three races over the two previous rounds in Dubai and Bahrain, the best that Defourny could manage over the weekend at Chennai was 4th place.  As a result, Defourny finished runner-up with 243 points to Chadwick’s 280 in the overall standings. Finland’s Patrick Pasma – winner of the two other races at the MMRT – ended the season 3rd in the standings.

“It (winning the championship) hasn’t sunk in yet,” said Chadwick, who became the British Formula 3 championship’s first female winner last season. “I would like to thank my team too and am happy that everything came together this weekend. I came into MRF Challenge for some experience and exposure, and not to win the championship. But after winning three races in Bahrain, I realised I was in with a chance and so went for it this weekend.”

The MRF Challenge has established itself as a serious winter series for junior single-seater drivers from around the world to keep their skills sharp over the off-season. Past star-draws have included FIA European Formula 3 champion Mick Schumacher as well as Red-Bull-backed Dan Ticktum.

Chadwick had marked herself as a talent to watch out for even before her MRF Challenge success. In 2015, she became the first female driver to win a British GT championship and last year, she became the first woman to win a British Formula 3 race. She is also on a shortlist of 28 female drivers who will go through a final series of trials to compete in the new all-women W Series.

The MRF Challenge title is Chadwick’s first single-seater championship success.
