VITASOY PLUS MILKY: OUR NEW FAVORITE DRINK AT HOME
There are people who drink soy milk just because of its nutritional benefits, but aren’t really into its raw taste. If you’re one of them and you find alternative brands too sugary or too artificial – here’s your good news! There’s Vitasoy Plus Milky, a product of Vitasoy-Universal Robina Corporation (VURC). It’s made with the finest ingredients and it conveys the natural goodness of soy, but with a much milkier taste! It’s so creamy and tastes heavenly that it’s almost addicting. I actually made some snacks using Vitasoy and everyone at home loved it. It’s satisfying to think that not only are my siblings eating something pleasurable to the taste, but they’re also becoming physically stronger, given the benefits of soy.

1 liter is just Php85 and available nationwide via leading supermarkets and grocery stores.

NegOcc logs surplus of 15K hogs every month
#PHnews: NegOcc logs surplus of 15K hogs every month
BACOLOD CITY – The Province of Negros Occidental has a production surplus of some 500 hogs per day or 15,000 hogs per month, allowing it to ship out pigs to Luzon and other markets with a supply deficit mainly due to the African swine fever (ASF) scare.
Dr. Renante Decena, the provincial veterinarian, said in a statement on Friday while the local daily requirement is only 1,000 to 1,500 slaughtered hogs, raisers produce more than what is needed by Negrense consumers.
He noted that other provinces are now slowing down the shipment of live pigs to Luzon while some are even planning to temporarily stop shipping out amid apprehensions that local supply may dwindle.
Meanwhile, Negros Occidental was able to ship at least 708 heads of slaughtered hogs to Luzon and Visayas from February 1 to 7 alone aside from the 6,322 heads shipped in January.
Decena said to maintain the surplus status, the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) is looking at infusing breeder gilts and piglets plus artificial insemination breeding to attain a growth rate of 15 percent annually.
With the declining trend in local hog production in the last two years, the province aims to sustain its surplus status this year, he added.
Based on the Livestock and Poultry Situationer report, the PVO noted a drop of 9.44 percent in the province’s hog population between 2016 and 2020.
In 2016, there were 520,114 heads, higher than 518,273 in 2017. The hog population recovered in 2018 when the province was able to produce 520,737 heads.
However, it again decreased to 486,129 and 470,979 heads in 2019 and 2020, respectively, posting a hog population decrease of 3.12 percent in the last two years.
Decena said some backyard raisers have reduced production because the buying live weight price of PHP70 to PHP80 per kilo was lower than the production cost of PHP85 to PHP90 per kilo.
In Negros Occidental, 85 percent of the overall hog production comes from backyard raisers while the remaining 15 percent accounts for commercial production. (PNA)

Travel, Trivial, Tale
Do you want to go somewhere you can eat, play videogames and boardgames and have fun with your friends or family? Look no more, Secret Base is the place you've been missing on!
With a single booth that is estimated to have enough sandbags for 3-7 people --depending on the booth--, foods that cannot only give a satisfaction to your hunger but also please your eyes, and different games to entertain yourself in, one can surely enjoy his visit in Secret Base.

Since there is no entrance fee in Secret Base, the way to access the board and card games is of course, through buying and ordering their food. The prices ranges from PHP50 (Subzero drinks) to PHP500 (Milktea Tower, best seller) for drinks and PHP85 (Fries, good for one person) to PHP530 (Food baskets, good for groups). There are also variations of food and drinks there like rice meals, burgers, pizzas, pastas sandwiches, waffles, frappe, espresso, fruit drinks, hot drinks, milktea, and more.

In terms of games, card and board games as well as the costumes are free as long as you've ordered something, and you have to pay PHP50/hr (1-2 players) for video games like WiiU and PS4.

If you want a private space for you and your friends, the lounge room is available and it's specifically for events or just a simple private gathering. Renting the room itself costs PHP2,000 for 3 hours and the food is not yet part of it. If your group have 20 or more people, you can pay PHP7,000 for the lounge and the food, but if not, you have to at least have the minimum order of PHP10,000 to have access to the room.
Place: Secret Base
Address: DQ Building, Lilac corner Panorama St., along Gen. E. San Diego St., Concepcion Dos, Marikina
(For additional info's, the cons and other pictures, please refer to this post.)

Carleen Goes to Taiwan: Day 3 (Yehliu Geopark + Jiufen Old Street + Shifen Sky Lantern + Shu Shin Bou Wagashi Museum + Shilin Night Market)

Third part of my travel blog in Taiwan, as stated in my title, will be the trio: Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen Old Street, and Shifen Sky Lantern. With the activity package we bought was an additional activity which was the Pineapple Cake Making in Shu Shin Bou Wagashi Museum. As the day ended, we spent the night at the Shilin Night Market.
The activity package we bought was from Klook and costs PHP 1,056. The package included transportation from the meet-up place to the different itineraries, entrance fees, sky lantern fee, and a tour guide.
You may read more to find out my experience and more details about this trip!
-----
DAY 3 MAY 25, 2019
First on our itinerary was the Yehliu Geopark.
YEHLIU GEOPARK
Yehliu Geopark is known for its geological formations. Some of the popular formations are the Queen’s Head and Princess’ Head. Our tour guide mentioned that the neck of the Queen’s Head might break in about 2 years time since the neck part is getting thinner, thus, it is difficult to support the weight of the head.

Here’s what the Yehliu Geopark looks like seeing from the top.

The Yehliu Geopark was a good place to visit. Unfortunately, we had a limited time in exploring the place since we were part of a tour. When I visit Taiwan next time, I’ll definitely make sure to drop by Yehliu again to spend more time and see the other formations.
JIUFEN OLD STREET
Next one on our itinerary was the famous Jiufen Old Street. It is known for its busy streets with food stalls and a view of nature. If I remember it correctly, Jiufen Old Street is also known for the Japanese anime, Spirited Away, which the location was based in it.

Before entering the busy street, our tour guide let us passed by in another street to see the beautiful view of the mountain and sea, and to let us know the other side of Jiufen Old Street.

Seeing the view was truly amazing!

Here’s the street we passed through opposite of the Jiufen Old Street.

The end of the street we passed through was an entry going to the Jiufen Old Street.

Beside the stairs going to Jiufen Old Street is the Shengping Theater. The theater was built at the year 1934 and was used for Opera performances.

It was lunchtime and we had limited time so we looked for the nearest place we can eat at. Upon climbing up the stairs, we found a small restaurants that was good enough for us.

We ordered 4 Minced Pork Rice at NT$50 (PHP85) each and one order of Xiao Long Bao at NT$80 (PHP136). It was quite affordable since we just paid NT$70 (PHP119) each.
The restaurant’s ambiance was good and airconditioned. Food was very delicious that if given a chance, I would definitely order another one!

The street was actually a very long walk! Side by side, there were food stalls and “pasalubongs” to buy. It was crowded with people on the day we went there. However, our tour guide said it was actually a few in population compared during holidays and Sundays.
Again, due to limited time, we weren’t able to go up the tea house to actually see it. So here’s another place to go back to when I’m in Taiwan again.
SHIFEN OLD STREET
The old street at Shifen is known as the lantern street. Before, the lanterns were used as signals during the war and now tourists go here to fly their very own lantern. The lanterns, just like the candles, are color coded with each color comes a meaning or for what you are wishing for.

1 lantern is good for 4 people. Our lantern was included in the Klook package and red was given to us. You can change the color of the lantern, be it another solid color or a multiple colors with an additional fee. If I remembered it correctly, the prices for 1 colored lantern is at NT$150 (PHP255) and the multiple colored lantern is at NT$200 (PHP340).

For our lantern, red means health and peace.
To those, who are wondering if it’s made with plastic, it is not. The lanterns are all made in bamboo papers that will land in an area in Taiwan where it often rains.

Here’s a picture of me along the railway with the best milk tea I’ve ever tasted! 😂

Again, BEST. MILK. TEA. EVER. 😍
The milk tea stall is just along the railway.
SHU SHIN BOU WAGASHI MUSEUM (PINEAPPLE CAKE MAKING)

The ingredients and materials for the pineapple cake making.

To see a preview of the making of a pineapple cake, you may check my vlog at the end of my post!

It was a good experience to be able to make some pineapple cake. It might a simple one but it was an experience to remember.
After making the cakes, we were directed to their shop for us to try their products and if we would want to buy some. Personally, their pineapple cakes tastes amazing and the almond seaweed crackers!
After the Klook tour, we decided to go to Shilin Night Market - our 3rd night of trying the night markets in Taiwan.
SHILIN NIGHT MARKET

Shilin Night Market is one of the biggest and popular night markets in Taiwan.
To go to Shilin Night Market, we took the MRT from Taipei Main Station.
1. Take Tamsui-Xinyi Line/Red Line (to Beitou/to Tamsui) 2. Alight at Jiantan Station EXIT 1
The entrance to the night market is diagonally across to the left of MRT Jiantan Station Exit 1. Again, alight at Jiantan Station and NOT at Shilin Station.
Photos below are some of the food we bought in Shilin Night Market.

Sweet Potato Cheese Balls (NT$80/PHP136)

Burned Eight Claw Octopus (NT$100/PHP170)
Tteokbokki (NT$80/PHP136)
The sweet potato was good to try but not my favorite within the food we tried at Shilin Night Market. Burned Eight Claw Octopus was delicious and tastes like Takoyaki. Even though we were in Taiwan, we bought a Korean food - Tteokbokki. The Tteokbokki was delicious too. Also, not in the photo was a long Shoestring Fries in eaweed flavor that costs NT$70 (PHP119).

Summer Weekend
From Buendia station, take JAM Liner bus to Batangas Pier Php397 each
Takes about 2-3hrs travel
DO NOT get off the first big station (Grand Terminal) as it is not your destination yet.
Not even to pee or stretch your legs as the bus will not wait for you.
Get Muelle ferry (fastcat) Php350 with shuttle.
Php300 without the shuttle if your destination is just Muelle.
Weekends usually has 6PM last trip but during weekdays, up to 5PM only.
Walk along the beach to find different choices and prices for food.

We were on a hunt to get some grilled seafood and I’ve been craving for squid but the prices was a bit too much (especially for someone like me who cooks and does the wet market stuff, I do have an idea how much they are priced)
We ended up choosing Don Leo’s a bit further down the beach. The grilled squid we got was Php165 plus the grilled eggplant that included salted egg, Php85.
For dinner we did the same thing, left our room around 7pm after resting for about 3hrs to walk around White Beach to hunt for reasonably priced food and we were able to locate one with a big grilled tilapia for only Php200 and adobo squid.
Watched the fire dancers and the comedy skit by Wally’s Bar. Walked our dinner off a bit more till we decided to head back to the hotel for a good rest.
Best to ask for room 201 if u want a quote secluded space in La Solana. Every room has a balcony for smoking if you do smoke.
Room is fairly sized and shower just right, not too hot nor too cold. No freebie coffees though or welcome drinks.
Their food is reasonably priced with Filipino breakfast from Php130 like pork/beef tapa, tocino, daing with fried rice and egg and coffee.
Getting back, best to go to White Beach and head straight to the ticketing shops for shuttle and ferry services to Muelle then Batangas Pier.
Overall, it was one of the best staycation summer holi I had albeit it being a short weekend trip.

Binondo Food Trip

I’ve been looking forward for a legit Binondo food trip to happen ever since I can remember. Though I already have been here countless times and have tried dining in to one of its famous restaurants (click HERE), this time is more comprehensive. Finally, I can now share to you guys a more detailed and authentic food trip experience in the world’s oldest Chinatown!
Our very own Chinatown is not just about food. There are actually some historical and cultural sites around so if you have spare time, try checking them out. We were able to visit a few but our main goal here is the food! We actually started late as well and even had a plan to watch a movie after so accomplishing everything on our list for that day was not a success. But still, I’m contented with our food trip experience as we were able to try out the most famous and recommended ones without breaking our wallet.
Our map for the day!
To start of your Binondo trip, you can choose either Binondo Church or the New Binondo Chinatown Arch as your starting point. The area is not that big and each spot can be reached by walking. I did this with my 3 friends from work. Doing it solo is doable but sharing the experience with friends is cheaper and way more fun!
Our meet-up point was Binondo Church.

Dong Bei Dumplings
Recommended: Kuchay with Pork Dumplings – Php200/Usd3.8 (14pcs)

At first, I thought 14 dumplings were way too many for me but I think I could finish everything on this plate. 😄 Don’t you worry, I shared this with my friends. 😉

Beef Noodles – Php230/Usd4.4

New Po-Heng Lumpia House
Recommended: Lumpia – Php95/Usd1.8 per piece (can be cut into two)
The star of our Binondo food trip! We all agreed that the lumpia from New Po-Heng was the best we’ve tried that day.

Aside from Lumpia, they also offer Maki and Misua to name a few.

Quik-Snack
This is just on the same alley with New Po-Heng Lumpia House.
Recommended: Kuchay Ah – Php50/Usd1 per piece

Our stomachs were almost full by this time so we went to the New Binondo Chinatown Arch first before heading to our next restaurant which is just nearby.

Ying Ying Tea House
Make sure to come here early or outside peak hours as a lot of people flock in here to eat.
Recommended: Crab Stick Roll – Php80/Usd1.5
We also ordered Shaolong Pao for Php75/Usd1.4

Lam Dynasty Restaurant
Recommended: Pork Chop Bun – Php70/Usd1.3

Sincerity Restaurant
Recommended: Sincerity Chicken (1/2 order – good for 3-4pax) – Php180/Usd3.4
Recommended: 8-Treasure Machang (made out of sticky rice with chicken, pork, scallops, abalone, mushroom, castanas, shrimps, and chorizo) – Php135/Usd2.5
Kikiam – Php60/Usd1.1

Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli
For pasalubongs and treats like hopia and tikoy, Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli is already an institution here in Binondo.

Recommended: Custard Hopia is my personal favorite!

They also have their very own restaurant and souvenir shop upstairs.

Tea Brothers
Just beside Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli is Tea Brothers. We were all full already but still had space for one last treat. I couldn’t leave Binondo without trying the Ube Milk Tea here in Tea Brothers.
Ube Milk Tea – Php75/Usd1.4 (S) ; Php85/Usd1.6 (L)
It was okay for me. It’s more of an Ube Milk drink actually as I couldn’t taste the tea.
Other restaurants to try:
Café Mezzanine
Ling Nam
Shanghai Fried Siopao
Ang Tunay Beef House

San Miguel Re-IPO Valuation - Decent Upside from the Low-End of the Price Range
San Miguel (SMC PM) looking to sell 523m (including 174.3m upsize option) San Miguel Food and Beverage (FB PM)'s shares with a 15% over-allotment option, downsized from the initial 1.02bn size. The selldown is part of SMC's effort to improve liquidity in FB and comply with the minimum public ownership rule.
The deal scores well on our placement framework owing to its strong fundamentals, inexpensive valuation, and a good track record. The deal provides an opportunity to get exposure to a market leader in various markets in the Philippines. In our previous note, our valuation was based on bullish assumptions whereas in our revised SOTP valuation here, it suggests that there is a decent 8% potential upside from the bottom end of the price range, however, the top end implies a 3% downside. There is also a good chance that the company will be included in the MSCI Philippines Index on the back of an increased float.
