Top 10 Study Strategies for PSLE Success
Preparing for the PSLE Exam can feel overwhelming, but with the right strategies, students can approach it with confidence and clarity. The Primary School Leaving Examination is a major milestone in a student’s academic journey, and success often comes down to having an effective study plan. In this blog, we’ll explore ten proven strategies that can help students maximise their performance and reduce exam-related stress.
1. Set Clear and Achievable Goals
One of the first steps toward PSLE success is goal-setting. Students should create short-term and long-term academic goals. These could be daily targets, such as completing a revision chapter, or long-term goals like improving in Mathematics by the next mock exam. Writing down goals provides direction and motivation.
2. Create a Realistic Study Schedule
A well-structured timetable is key to consistent study. The schedule should balance study time, rest, and recreational activities. Allocate more time to weaker subjects without neglecting the stronger ones. Review and adjust the timetable weekly to reflect changing priorities and progress.
3. Practice Past-Year Papers
Working through past PSLE papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare. It familiarises students with the exam format, common question types, and time constraints. Parents can simulate real exam conditions to help children manage time pressure better.
4. Use Active Recall Techniques
Instead of passive reading, students should use active recall—trying to remember information without looking at notes. This method strengthens memory and helps identify weak areas. Flashcards, self-quizzing, and teaching a concept aloud are excellent active recall methods.
5. Apply the Pomodoro Technique
The Pomodoro Technique involves studying in focused intervals, typically 25 minutes of study followed by a 5-minute break. This helps maintain concentration and prevents burnout. After four intervals, take a longer break to recharge.
6. Make Use of Visual Aids
Visual learners benefit greatly from diagrams, charts, and mind maps. Converting written notes into colourful visual formats can help retain information more effectively. This is particularly helpful in subjects like Science and Math, where concepts can be visualised.
7. Revise Regularly, Not Just Before the Exam
Cramming leads to unnecessary stress and shallow learning. Instead, use spaced repetition to review topics at increasing intervals. This method helps commit concepts to long-term memory, leading to better recall during the PSLE Exam.
8. Focus on Understanding, Not Just Memorisation
Understanding the 'why' behind an answer builds a strong foundation. In Mathematics and Science especially, it’s important to grasp concepts rather than just memorise formulas. Encourage children to ask questions and explore real-life applications of what they learn.
9. Join Study Groups or Peer Discussions
Studying with friends or in small groups can be incredibly helpful. It provides opportunities to explain concepts to peers, which reinforces understanding. Just ensure that study groups stay focused and are not used as a distraction.
10. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Good nutrition, sufficient sleep, and regular physical activity play a vital role in academic performance. A tired and hungry brain cannot absorb or retain information efficiently. Encourage students to rest well, eat brain-boosting foods, and stay active during the study season.
Conclusion
Achieving success in the PSLE Exam is not just about how many hours are spent studying, but how wisely those hours are used. By implementing these 10 strategies—goal setting, structured schedules, active recall, and maintaining a healthy routine—students can approach the exam with greater confidence and competence. Consistency and support from family go a long way in making the PSLE journey smooth and successful.

Thinking Outside the Box: Unconventional Ways to Solve PSLE Math Questions
When it comes to solving PSLE Math questions, the conventional methods often get the job done, but sometimes thinking outside the box can lead to faster and more efficient solutions. The PSLE Maths paper can seem overwhelming, especially when students encounter tricky questions that don’t seem to fit the usual approach. By learning how to approach problems creatively, students can not only improve their problem-solving skills but also develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. In this blog, we’ll explore some unconventional yet effective ways to solve PSLE Math questions and boost your chances of success.
Visualizing Problems with Diagrams
One of the most powerful techniques in solving math problems is visualizing the problem with a diagram. While this may seem like a simple step, many students overlook it. Sketching out a question, especially in geometry or word problems, can give a fresh perspective and help identify relationships between different elements.
Draw to scale: When faced with geometry problems, draw shapes to scale to better understand their dimensions and angles.
Use diagrams in word problems: Visualizing the situation described in the question can make the math more concrete and easier to manipulate.
By using diagrams, students can break down complex problems into simpler, more manageable pieces.
Breaking Down Word Problems
Word problems are often one of the most challenging parts of the PSLE Maths paper. However, many students make the mistake of trying to solve them in one go. Instead, taking the time to break down the information piece by piece can lead to a clearer understanding of the problem.
Identify key information: Underline or highlight important numbers and relationships in the question.
Simplify the scenario: Create a simplified version of the problem, or use smaller numbers to test your understanding before applying it to the full problem.
By breaking down word problems into smaller steps, students can avoid getting overwhelmed and approach the question more strategically.
Using Logical Reasoning and Elimination
In many PSLE Math questions, especially multiple-choice ones, logical reasoning and elimination are powerful tools. Students can often eliminate some answer choices right away, narrowing down the options and increasing their chances of selecting the correct one.
Rule out clearly incorrect answers: If an answer doesn’t make sense based on the question, cross it out.
Look for patterns: Sometimes, looking for patterns in the question or answer choices can lead to the right solution faster.
Logical reasoning allows students to make educated guesses and move closer to the right answer, even if they aren’t entirely sure of the exact solution.
Reverse Engineering the Problem
Another unconventional method for solving PSLE Math questions is reverse engineering. This approach involves working backwards from the answer choices to figure out which one fits the given information. While this method isn’t always applicable, it can be a game-changer when students are stuck.
Start with the answer: If the problem allows, check if one of the answer choices can help lead you back to the original question.
Test answers logically: Substitute each option back into the problem and check for consistency.
Reverse engineering allows students to think in a different way, often leading to quicker solutions when conventional methods feel too time-consuming.
Estimation and Approximation
Estimation is a valuable skill in math, especially when precision isn’t necessary. In many PSLE Math questions, students can use estimation to quickly gauge the possible answer range, which can guide them in selecting the right choice.
Estimate the size of numbers: Round numbers to make mental calculations quicker and easier.
Use approximation for fractions or percentages: When exact numbers aren’t crucial, approximate to narrow down your options.
Estimation helps students avoid overthinking problems and gives them a more intuitive sense of the correct answer.
Making Use of Patterns and Symmetry
Finding patterns and symmetry in math problems can drastically reduce the complexity of a question. Whether it’s recognizing a repeating sequence, identifying symmetry in shapes, or spotting a consistent relationship between numbers, patterns can often offer shortcuts to solutions.
Identify repeated patterns: Look for sequences or repeated steps in the problem that can simplify the calculation.
Use symmetry: In geometry, symmetry can often reveal shortcuts to finding missing angles or dimensions.
Recognizing patterns can help students save time and effort, especially when working with complex math questions.
Thinking of Alternative Methods
Sometimes, there’s more than one way to solve a problem. By thinking creatively, students can find alternative methods to tackle difficult questions. This might involve using a different formula, applying a less commonly used concept, or finding a simpler way to approach a seemingly complicated problem.
Try different formulas: Some questions can be solved using less obvious formulas that students may not have thought to apply.
Use a different approach: If a particular method isn’t working, try another one, like switching between algebraic and geometric methods.
By exploring different angles, students open themselves up to a variety of solutions, which can be especially helpful during an exam.
Conclusion
While conventional methods are important for solving PSLE Maths questions, thinking outside the box can make a big difference. Visualizing problems, breaking down word problems, using logical reasoning, reverse engineering, estimation, recognizing patterns, and exploring alternative methods all offer creative ways to tackle math questions. By adopting these unconventional strategies, students can approach their PSLE Maths paper with greater confidence and flexibility, making the exam feel less intimidating and more manageable. Remember, the key to success is not only mastering the standard techniques but also being open to new ways of thinking and problem-solving.

My Hero PSLE: S3E13 "Death-pacito"
"My mother's name is Smiling, and my father's name is Laughing." "Are you kidding?" "No, that's my cousin! I'm Joking!"
-Joking
"You know the Anodyne isn't the source of my powers, right, just a booster for it, so what makes you think you can defea-" *gets stabbed again*
Aiya shuddap lah. Xiao Ming already winning liao, and clearly you're the only one half-dead here.
Are ya winning son
Oh nvm somehow Ma Xiao Tiao and Rainslasher are also half-dead because they got hit when Izanami was mad-raging-randomly-hitting-but-actually-can't-see-where-he's-hitting. It's like Johnny English when he's wearing the VR headset and then he whacks people with the baguette in real life because he doesn't know-
Well it must surely be some gigachad move by Ma Xiao Tiao to protect everyone else or something idk.
Then anyway Xiao Ming made sure that Izanami cannot even stand up anymore, then threw him into a random prison cell like Banda and Yaba did with my babygirl Enji.
And then he was just half-dead already, "AIYA TF YOU WANT? JUST MATI ME ALREADY LAH!"
"Oh, uh...*clears throat* right now is currently extremely nsfw and not suitable for children aged 18 and under, so kids, I'll go take you fish bombing somewhere else, ok?" Grandmaster have to say it in the sibeh sus way sia.
"Ok...fine..." Xiao Hua and others have to go, otherwise he will use his reality warping power on him.
"Hah! Have fun, KIDDOS!" The furry people and Six shouted from the back of the proverbial room.
"Oh, yeah, you're kids too, come with me," Then now Grandmaster remember liao.
"AIYA MATI LAH!" So they also have to go.
And then Ma Xiao Tiao, Freya, Aniya, Juqla and friends went to go and summon a divine temple to store the Seven Deadly Sins in and then give it a password instead of math puzzle so that only they can access it from then on.
Anyway. Now that the kids are away, Xiao Ming and adult gang can finally do something sibeh sus.
"Ok firstly I take this away from you," *proceeds to snatch the Anodyne away from Izanami, he doesn't even bother fighting anymore at this point*
"And then I begin our Q&A session,"
"WAITWAITWAIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN-"
"Aiya it's simple lah, I just ask you a few questions, you answer me truthfully, but if YOU DARE LIE TO ME-then 我就不客气了 ok? I wanna all your Exuvian secrets,"
"WHY ME THO? ISSIT BECAUSE OF I'M AN EXUVIA?"
*Xiao Ming stares at Izanami* "你说呢?"
"Um, before you have your fun with him, Izanami, I need to ask you one question." Rainslasher finally said something after being quiet the entire season. "It's regarding the supposed third and final part of the Trilogy-*sighs deeply like some exasperated old man* Izanami, do you know a god by the alias of the Heavenly Lord of Dragon Warriors?"
So Izanami also really sick of it at this point: "Well, a lot of Exuvias I know go by something something heavenly lord of something something warriors, so idk man,"
"Oh, ok, also, one more thing, Xiao Ming, for the next, third and final part of the Trilogy-I think it's best if we don't bring the entire squad. Bring just about a few people or so, trust me on this one," Rainslasher said, and then he went to go and join Grandmaster and kids in fish bombing.
"OK! Now that that's settled, WE CAN FINALLY HAVE OUR FUN TOGETHER NOW!"
"WAIT WAIT STOP I'LL TELL YOU EVERYTHING I KNOW YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY-"
"Nah, too late, you should have done that the moment we summoned you,"

I have put together 14 different flashcard games your students can play (PLUS free printable flashcards!). Games increase engagement and motivation. If you know me, you know this one is my favorite. Becoming confident with fact families will assist in mastering facts. With addition and subtraction cards (or multiplication and division) together, have students match fact families. Finding patterns will create mental connections which can ultimately be utilized as strategies. Now that students have practiced solving and are familiar with the answers, have them match cards by their sums, differences ect. Match and Sort by sum (or difference, product ect.) And it feels safer to challenge yourself because you have that safety net. It doesn’t feel so hard when you know you have access to the correct response. This will promote independence in practicing math facts and build confidence because students have support. Have students write the answer on the back and just begin by reading the fact with the answer. It’s a great first step–especially when introducing new facts. This may sound counterintuitive but exposure to the correct responses and reading them aloud will help students familiarize themselves with math facts. A smiling elementary age little girl sits in her after school care classroom and holds up a math addition flash card. It’s in these exploration opportunities that we can see students’ thinking and be better equipped to guide their learning. Ask them to represent the problem without showing them first. Select the type of math problems you want below and begin + - x Why I created this As a parent of young children, I've learned that (all) kids love their electronic devices. Allow students to explore with cubes, two-sided chips, or base 10 blocks. FREE Online Math Flash Cards These math problems are automatically generated and get more challenging as you level up. But, there’s something to be said for starting out slow. I think we often have this expectation that everything needs to be done quickly. Pairing math flashcards with manipulatives helps learners to visualize what is happening with the numbers. Students’ learning begins with visual, tangible, and kinesthetic experiences to establish basic understanding. When students are first starting to learn mathematical operations, they need concrete models. Concrete models are the first step in demonstrating understanding 1.

Knowledge and comprehension of scientific facts, concepts, and principles
Applying scientific concepts and knowledge to new situations
Evaluate data (including pictorial, tabular, and graphical data) and experiment with one or more of the process skills taught.
Science as a whole provides students with more significant insights into the world’s breakthroughs and fosters their curiosity by implementing learning through application.
PSLE Science exams consist of Booklet A of MCQ’s and Booklet B of open ended questions
Multiple-choice questions may appear simple to answer, which is usually the case. However, to fully assess whether a student has fully grasped the topic, some questions can be tricky and misleading. The options presented for specific questions may be very similar, with minor differences. The answer is obvious: the PSLE Science MCQ options have evolved to include longer and more difficult options. Students must further analyze the question in order to select the correct answer.
Open-ended questions should be answered wisely and thoroughly. Identifying the answers after reading the questions and answering them in detail helps to score more. These application questions help you to score more. That is not to say that your child should give up hope. Just be on the lookout for these “tricks”!
1. Be Familiar with the context of the PSLE Science Subject,
2. Schedule a plan and work on that accordingly,
3. Read the questions right and answer accordingly in the exam,
4. Proper Revision
These are some of the tricks you can do and follow for scoring well in PSLE Science.

my 10 year series
in light of everyone doing their reflection of the past 10 years, i think joining the bandwagon would help me look back on the past decade - if anything to make me think of things that i can be (extra) grateful for, so here goes;
2010; primary school happened. tbh i cant remember much, (lol i actl went on a fb hunt but its taking forever to scroll everything, so im just going to write everything by my own memory and whatever it deems important haha) had my psle, felt disappointed bc i didnt do well enough for my math (got like a C instead of a B that i thought i worked hard for), thankfully there’s a secondary school that allows me to be in express. confessed to this boy i liked in case i regret, but hey at least i had the guts to tell him ok! 2011; start of secondary school, met different people from all kinds of backgrounds - the broken, the privileged, etc. also increase weight gain bc of puberty + lack of self control. started learning a new instrument (the saxophone). start of bullying all over again bc of the weight, but also liked this boy for treating me like a human - turns out i can like someone for a very long time. also crucial time for me of getting to know jw, probably was the first few contacts we had.
2012; increased weight gain, increased bullying as well. i remember (for the drama), i ran out of class crying and went into the arms of a friend, just because the hurtful things i’ve heard the boys said. also streaming year, but not sure what i was doing half the time, but had to make important decisions (subject choices). weight gain was really bad here. trip to china with the school was great though! probably one of the highlights of school.
2013; best year of my secondary school life; probably bc i dont remember studying much bc of my sinful ways lol, but also bc i had so much fun in school and barely scrapped through my results. couldnt stand the bullying so started the herbalife diet and lost the weight subsequently, but took a hell lot of time. started running a lot! i think this is also the year i started serving in camy, but also dont remember what i was doing half the time ahahha. by the grace of God, i think i rly barely passed to even go into secondary 4 lol. also the year i fell into the radio world, and found my love for mass comm. got my piercings here in the midst of the recalcitrant self, hated my math teacher to the guts and didnt know how to treat people right in the midst of the ‘identity confusion lol’ got drunk for the first time with friends drinking at the beach, partying in our minor years hahahha. 2014; O levels year. didnt hang out much with the bad company, and i think this was when i studied the hardest. i actually started catching up and getting serious, (and did well for the first time in my education woohoo!) but in the midst of the pride, my results dropped for O levels but all’s good. applied for dpa but failed, but went applied for JPSAE and really by the grace of God, i got into mass comm (after my results). ran my first few marathons here too! my secondary school friends settled down here - besides the insane brain study cramp, i think sec 4 was something i really appreciated, being able to study and kinda not hating myself, but learning how to trust God too. 2015; good 8 months of working part time! wow this is actually a pretty good year. had blue hair, (woohoo!) then got into the school of my dreams by the hand of God (this one rly wah.) first backpacking trip of my life (which made me love life so much more), struggled through the first year of school too. tbh this makes me think of my poly life - and all i can remember it to be would be just ‘BUSY’ and ‘CHINA’. lol how ironic??? considering this place was a dream for me, but i turned out to leave feeling to bleh about it. (but ok not true, i think it was an experience i am willing to take, looking back). understood the pain of the evil media/coporate world haha. the lack of sleep was real, but i actl started the year quite skinny leh!!! then the subsequent weight gain was very real hahahaha. joined ambassadors, started ‘dating’, the idea of having the social life was very real too 2016; BUSY BUSY BUSY. not sure what i was doing with my life tbh, but ok it was more media stuff, perhaps my brain does not want to revisit the joy bc it is attached with the pain and bitter side of things, but i know i have to let these go too. ‘broke up’! learnt about love and confrontation. WOW OK this is also the year i had my really really short hair!!!! wow i have no idea where i got the guts to do it, but i did it anyway HAHAHA. also the year ah ma passed away, then i ran my own comm (and saw people grow so well :’) ), kinda reaffirmed me of why im doing what im doing, and being able to groom people was such a privilege. also the year i hated running RC bc camp finale, but also the year i discovered my r/s with k and the love i had for him. 2017; the birth of beyond. i cant believe it feels so foreign to me now, but man it wasnt just the boy from beyond, but the joy from the relationships i had because of it. OIC HK was an experience, then it was also Y3 and i cant believe it was a painful year bc of school (like the heck its alr 3 years still want to torture me leh!!!!). my first refugee trip whcih broke my heart, found myself crying over the issues of the world then realising i might not even have an answer for everything. falling in love with beyond, then realising our overseas internship was happening - one of the best things that happened to me for someone that’s 19 (young and free lol) also the loudest thought from jesus came in as i was entering the shower; “how can you love someone else, when you have yet to love me?” 2018; interned, met Jesus then decided to take a gap year. best of ministry bc of the partnership i had, but also the growth for the love for people. ran the next trip for the refugee kids, (even brought our graduation gowns lol) learnt how to cut hair!!! had the mass realisation that the world is VERY big. too big for my little brain to comprehend. started working with geylang adventures, then as the year transited into 2019, i got the job offer for st andrews autism school. 2019; realisation about the relationship i have with k - literally non-exsistant anymore. this one broke my heart quite a bit. (still trying to cope with it i guess.) went back to china on my own to surprise visit my friends woohoo. worked for st andrews + geylang adventures/backalleybarbers. tbh now that i look back into my gap year, im not sure what i was doing, but at the same time - it was something that i think my soul needed. not to rush just because the world is, but understanding so much of who God is, decerning the peace and learning so much about life. after many tears, many questions, i got into university. not my first choice, (not even in my life of choices tbh) but....;
2020;
it is day 4 of 2020, and i love what im studying. i love the friends that i’ve met in school bc they are easy to love, i love the nature of what im studying bc of the sheer contact of humanity it has. truth be told, none of us are going to become social workers. not at least those in my social circle. but at the same time, we are here studying in our best abilities, understanding who God is, through each other, through the course of study, through the people we meet. i love what im studying, but i got my first F in school, but yet i didn’t even panic (not like in mass comm leh!!!) and i could literally laugh it off. that’s how much i love what im doing.
and for that, as i’m writing this, i feel the need to scream at the top of the mountains that i’m thankful. the heart of gratitude is so real, the hand of God in my life is so real - you can argue that it is by sheer coincidence. i dont disagree, perhaps. but the peace - this immense peace, this joy, the intensity of this joy, cannot be explained, nor contained. i feel this need to shout across to the people i love and say HELLO THIS IS THE GOD I LOVE!!!! LISTEN TO ME!!!!!! HOW AM I SO SPECIAL!!!!! so thank you Jesus, for loving me. for the past 10 years. and for the many years to come. with a heart of gratitude, thank you for everything. perhaps this is not enough as a thank you message. perhaps only my life in return can translate my act of gratitude. until then, JESUS YOU ARE SO COOL and i think im starting to fall in love with you again. help me fall in love with you because you are you, and not because the things you have done for me. not because of how everything ‘seems so smooth’, but bc of who you are, your goodness, your grace, your mercy, your character, your nature, every bit of who you are!!!!

PSLE Intensive Preparation

With close to 90 DAYS left before the written papers of the PSLE 2019 exam…
and having your child finished his or her mid-year exam with less than satisfactory results, you may now be anxious and at wit’s end as to who to turn to and what other foolproof strategies to take to help your child make the best of the three months.
Here we would like to share a few tips that could help you help your child.
You reckon that a successful plan executed now over the next three months could have a profound influence on your child’s PSLE grades and the school he or she will end up may decide his or her future. So how can you help your child with his or her revision and in partnership draw up an effective revision schedule?
These tips and advice can provide a starting point.
Divide sessions to suit your child’s revision patterns plus attention span and include breaks in between. Vary the kinds of studying – attempt past-year questions; recalling formulae in Maths or key concepts in Science; try mind-mapping or talking through a particular topic and at times, make them fun too.
You could also adapt various multi-sensory activities of oral testing like visual learning (by sight), some auditory (hearing) and others kinaesthetic (touch).
For more visual learners, visual aids tap into the visual memory and help in recall and retrieval, so together as a project, search out interesting diagrams or flow-charts, Alternatively, both of you could place visual notes on post-its of key information to be remembered all around the house or bedside walls, on mirrors and fridge doors.
For auditory learners who learn best through listening and talking, parents could be their study buddies and discuss the topics at hand, make up songs and rhymes about tough concepts and make use of mnemonics to help remember a list of facts in a certain order.
First discuss with your child to zoom in on the difficult and more challenging topics of each subject and plan study sessions to address such concerns.
Kinaesthetic learners who learn best through physical movement or touch/feeling could try setting up different activities around the room, so the kids need to move to find out or write down answers. Using gestures or dance movements could also be one way to help them remember.
It is always good to give them the space to work out some studying independently, too. Here praise them for good work when you genuinely mean it. Do reassure them that when they fail to get their answers right, it’s ok. They learn from mistakes made now so as to avoid making them later. Should anxiety get the better of them, there is always breathing techniques that you both could practice in order to calm one’s nerves down.
HOW CAN WE HELP?
Should you feel helpless to such strategies and not find yourself to be a good study buddy, we have a comprehensive PSLE Intensive course 2019 that you can sign your child up. Topics will be discussed methodically and effective revision methods including comprehensive notes will be imparted to help your child with the last lap of revision.
HOW MORE CAN WE HELP?
If you are not able to ascertain what predominant learning style your child is inclined towards, look us up. We offer a FREE three-segment quiz that can elicit your child’s learning style. This will help him or her and our educator co-ordinate his revision schedule and study approach which will definitely help him be a more efficient and effective learner.

Time Management Tips for PSLE Students on Exam Day
The PSLE exam is a major milestone for every Primary 6 student in Singapore, and managing your time well on exam day can significantly impact your performance. With so much pressure and limited time, it’s essential to develop strategies that allow you to stay calm, focused, and efficient. In this blog, we’ll explore practical and effective time management tips to help you maximise your performance during the PSLE exam.
1. Start the Day Early Waking up early on exam day sets the tone for calmness and control. It gives you enough time to prepare, eat breakfast, and get to the examination centre without rushing. A well-paced morning reduces anxiety and helps you focus better during the paper.
2. Arrive at the Exam Hall Ahead of Time Plan to reach your exam centre at least 30 minutes early. This gives you breathing room to settle down and mentally prepare. Being early also helps you avoid last-minute panic caused by traffic delays or unexpected issues.
3. Read the Instructions Carefully As soon as you receive your paper, take a minute to read the instructions thoroughly. Understanding the format and number of questions will help you allocate your time wisely across sections and prevent careless mistakes.
4. Plan Your Time Allocation by Section Before diving into the questions, quickly scan the paper and estimate how much time you’ll need for each section. For example:
English Paper 2: Allocate more time to comprehension and less to grammar MCQs.
Math Paper 2: Give extra time for problem-solving questions that require working steps. This approach ensures you don’t spend too much time on any single part of the paper.
5. Don’t Get Stuck on One Question If a question is taking too long, move on and return to it later if you have time. Spending too much time on a tricky question can lead to panic and may prevent you from completing easier questions that carry the same marks.
6. Use the Last 5–10 Minutes to Check Your Work Always reserve a few minutes at the end to review your answers. This is your chance to spot careless errors, missing units, or skipped questions. Reviewing can make the difference between a borderline grade and a higher one.
7. Use a Watch or Clock Wisely Bring a basic wristwatch to keep track of time during the exam. Avoid relying on the wall clock, which may be hard to see from your seat. Glance at your watch occasionally to ensure you’re staying on track with your time plan.
8. Stay Calm and Focused Managing your emotions is a key part of time management. Stress and panic can slow you down and lead to mistakes. If you feel anxious, pause briefly and take a few deep breaths to reset your focus. Staying calm allows you to work more efficiently and clearly.
9. Practice Time Management Before the Exam Good time management starts long before exam day. During your PSLE preparation, time yourself while completing practice papers. This builds speed, accuracy, and confidence, so you’ll be more prepared when the real exam comes.
10. Avoid Overchecking While reviewing is important, don’t overthink every answer. If you keep second-guessing yourself, you may end up changing correct answers to wrong ones. Use your final minutes wisely—check for clear mistakes but trust your preparation.
Conclusion Mastering time management is essential for performing well in the PSLE exam. From arriving early and reading instructions carefully to pacing each section and leaving time for checks, every small action helps. These strategies not only improve your efficiency but also boost your confidence and composure. With practice and planning, you can walk into the exam room ready to give your best effort and walk out proud of your performance.

Singaporean Paradigm
Statistically, Singapore’s education system has produced outputs of stellar academic results over the last few years, beating many illustrious international academic institutions. I must admit, the system is indeed an excellent one in providing a world-class education.
However, although it’s ranking in the international field is remarkably astounding, it comes with a heavy price upon those giving the end product. Not too long ago, I read an article about an 11 year old boy who committed suicide because he did not meet his parents’ academic expectation. This is indeed a tragic story; that young boy had a promising future ahead of him but it was taken away simply because of an ingrained culture that sweeps every Asian sub-conscience. Elitism 101.
The stress on excellent academic performance is crucial in Singapore. As such, this attitude spawned many ‘Tiger mums’ and ‘Lombardi dads’ to go crazy on their kids at a very young age, enrolling them to specialised tuition centres, music and art classes. In result, this emboldens the child’s capabilities and skill sets, enabling them to perform extremely well in schools. However, we must not neglect the silent few, the ones who can’t cope with such a system. Well, I was one of them.
I was a late bloomer. I was fascinated with cartoons and was rather mischievous in tuition classes (surprisingly, I was well-behaved in school though I do get punished in school at times). I was not interested in the Maths and sciences, I had no intention of even doing the assignments and homework given to me. I was a kid, I wanted to have fun playing with my friends. However, my parents reception to my behaviour was not well received. They placed me in many numerous classes, during the weekdays and the weekends. The tutors did their best but their efforts were futile, I still failed most of my subjects. As such, it really hit me and I thought that maybe I was dumb. I actually believed that I was stupid, incapable of thinking and logical rationalisation. In turn, my esteem was shattered pretty hard. When I was 12, I received my Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results of 163. I still remembered the look on my mother’s face, a face I could not bear to see. A face that projected sheer disappointment and anguish.
The look on her face stirred my emotions quickly, without hesitation. I thought my life was over. “This was it, I’m such a loser”. Those kinds of sentiments rushed through my head, inside the wandering mind of a 12 year old kid. I felt lost and hopeless. However, that did not deter me. I gazed upon my mother’s face with a rousing determination: I made a bet with her. “I will enter the Express Stream”. She nodded without much enthusiasm.
As such, I entered secondary school with a drive to excel. I wasted no time with work. I wanted to be the best in all aspects, no matter what. Finally, at secondary 2, I was no longer in the Normal Academic Stream (NA). I was promoted to the Express Stream. It was glorious, a gamble I made that came true. I still remember the moment of elation when I received the news in the classroom. My efforts were not in vain.
Upper secondary came along, it was smooth sailing from the start. It seemed as though everything was in my favour, no obstacles, no barriers. As such, I was doomed from the start. My egoism mounted and my cynicism grew, I thought I could beat anyone in my class (or even the whole Express cohort). I wanted to prove what I was capable of, a former Normal Academic student. I wanted to beat them all. However, things came spiralling down. I was caught up with duties and responsibilities with my Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) in the Prefectorial Board and the National Cadet Corp (Land). I fought with my dear tuition teacher (Ms Yen) as I always made excuses for not accomplishing work given to me. I always feel guilty about that. Then one day, our amazing chemistry from lower secondary fell apart. I did not see her anymore. That’s where I made one of the greatest blunders in my whole academic life, I chose to join a class recommended by a friend of mine. That tutor, his name was Alvin Tan.
I came for his classes. He was so full of himself who talked about his academic achievements in the past, a braggart who manipulated feelings of his students to make them feel weak and useless, even to the extent of breaking friendships that altered and brewed tensions between former allies by creating unnecessary rivalry. I trusted him. He broke me to my very core. He told me I wasn’t suited for the A-level course. He was so wrong.
In the end, I got a raw score of 17 L1R5 for the GCE O-Levels and headed my way to Innova Junior College up north in Woodlands. I came with an idea of recreating myself, to forget the horrid past of Post O-Levels by establishing a wild and passionate persona. It did not go well. Well, things were easy at first. Then came along the real deal, the dreadful lectures and tutorials. Interestingly, as the months go by, my interests in the respective subjects that I was studying was reinforced while simultaneously dreading the work to be done. It was not a pleasant ride. I had a huge circle of friends at first which slowly deteriorated as the months go by. I fought with certain friends in the Student Council (not gonna state their names) and felt extremely vulnerable.
As such, the environment then felt very hostile as I felt alienated and isolated. I felt lonely, physically and emotionally. I was torn apart. Friends come and go, small talks here and there. Cliques everywhere. I felt as though I didn’t belong. What if Alvin Tan was right all along? Am I really not capable of conquering A-levels? Everything seemed so bleak, I did not have the answers. I mixed myself with a girl I thought I was in love with (dumped her in the end though, we were nothing much). It was all too much.
Until one special afternoon, a question that will forever change the course of my JC experience: “Nic, wanna go Wild Wild Wet with us?”. Everything blossomed, I got close with Asaad, Haziq and Ashleey (which at first seemed to unlikely) and they treated me like family. We laughed, we ate together, we played together, we studied together. Everything was doing just fine (well, not in the academic sense).
It was a long and winding road towards the A-levels, we (mostly Asaad and I) clocked in day in and day out in the library. Studying and mugging every concepts, notes, facts and abstract ideas for our essays. We were all sick and tired of failing (I received a rank point of 17 for Prelims) and we felt miserable. However, the company was great. Just the guys studying (sometimes productively) in the library towards one specific goal, conquering A-levels. That’s where we grew closer and stronger as we headed towards the final countdown.
This is where the story of my formal education ends. Well, you may ask how did I fair for the A-levels. I must say, not too good. I got a 60 Rank Point which was pretty average (though I couldn’t get into a local university). Believe me, A-levels was not easy. It was a suicidal course. However, I did took up the challenge where some may say I couldn’t do it (even Ms Yen doubted me). People may say that getting a 60 for 2 years of studying ain’t worthwhile. Well, I disagree. I’ve learnt so many things beyond the classroom. The notion of accountability and responsibility, the power of resilience and attitude, the will to smile through the times of hardships. I learnt that on my own. No teacher taught me that. Life was my teacher. It gave me a hard lesson these past few years in the Singaporean System.
I am eternally grateful to my teachers, those that were kind and patient, those that were brutally straight forward and honest, those that even question my very sanity. I thank them sincerely. Without them, I wouldn’t be typing this out. Throughout my academic life as a student in Singapore, I must say…
I was the victor and the victim. I had my moments of achievements and numerous failures. In these failures, I learnt the importance of humility because I know what it feels like being a complete loser. It sucks tremendously. It breaks your mind and soul, it leaves you in the dark begging for an answer to your perceived predicament. However, life itself is a dimension filled with endless possibilities. As long as you and I are still breathing, we can make the best out of our lives. As a kid, I thought failure was the end of the world. Everything felt like it was collapsing. Failure is an inevitable condition in the human experience. One must embrace it, one must remain calm and composed in the face of great adversities for life is a great big bubble of ambiguity. Our choices does not necessarily define you, it is what you do even when life seemed to be dead wrong. Respond difficulties with kindness and compassion for it shall be returned to the giver. What goes around what comes around.
Throughout this journey, I’ve met a lot of intelligent people. Oh, remembered the aforementioned 'Elitism 101’ nonsense? Well, there are those who were intelligent and there were those who mixed intelligence with blatant arrogance and disconcerting vanity. These people are those who belittle others, who mistreat them saying that they aren’t in the same level as them, in terms of intellectual capacity. Not the same level? That’s true. You know why? Intelligence is not solely got to do with numbers, concepts and statistics. There are different types of intelligence these elitist high horses need to comprehend. Schools test nothing about intelligence. They do not teach. They forgot to teach and thus we forgot to learn. We were instead forced to memorised in order to get an A for a damn certificate. People, don’t mix yourselves to these narrow-minded freaks. Don’t you dare say you’re stupid or whatsoever. You deserve everything in the world and what it has to offer, no one can tell you different. No one. Not even your parents, your siblings, your teachers and your friends. Intelligence and sheer memorisation, two different entities. Totally different things. You’re neither dumb nor stupid. You’re different and be yourself. Be original. Be you.
So, there you have it people, this is the Singaporean Paradigm, a perspective from a student and his great academic adventure from primary school to junior college, a great emotional rollercoaster that was worthwhile riding. It’s time to move along, to a next chapter of my life.
Thank you for everything, MOE
Sincerely, The Traumatised Teen
