Solar Eclipse Path Map Shows States Where Sun Will Be Blocked Out
— March 16, 2024 | Newsweek
A rare total solar eclipse will take place next month and will be the last chance for Americans to view the natural phenomena for two decades, astronomy experts have said.
A total eclipse will be experienced by millions of Americans on April 8 this year—a rare astronomical event in which the skies briefly turn dark during daylight hours. Next month's eclipse is a rare event, with the last one taking place over the U.S. in 2017.
"You definitely want to be looking at the sky on April 8th because if you miss the solar eclipse this year, you have to wait two decades until the next chance to see a total solar eclipse from the contiguous United States," Brian Lada, AccuWeather astronomy expert, told Newsweek.
"Total solar eclipses themselves are not rare. They happen every year somewhere around the world. What is rare is to have them visible here in the United States."
Total eclipses occur once every other year somewhere on the planet, but for each individual community, they occur once every few centuries with some exceptions, Lada explained.
Tumblr media
A solar eclipse is seen at Liberty Island in on August 21, 2017, in New York City. While New York was not in the path of totality for the solar eclipse, around 72 percent of the sun was covered by the moon during the peak time of the partial eclipse. Noam Galai/WireImage/Getty
What Is A Total Solar Eclipse?
According to Jonathan Belles, digital meteorologist for The Weather Channel, a solar eclipse takes place when the moon's orbit "takes it into the same plane as the sun, blocking out the sun."
There are numerous things to look out for - aside from the skies turning dark in the middle of the day - during a solar eclipse. Belles told Newsweek: "During a total solar eclipse, you can see explosions of matter being launched from the sun on some occasions. You'll likely see some eerie shadows in the form of eclipsed discs or even slithering snakes on the ground under trees and other objects. You might see bats and birds head out for food thinking that the sunset has arrived."
"If you look at the horizon, you may see thin clouds of ice that are usually invisible to the naked eye. You may also see clouds shrink over land or grow over the ocean. In elevated locations, you might also be able to tell where the sun is still shining."
Where Can I See The Total Eclipse?

According to Lada, those wishing to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon will need to be "in a narrow area called the path of totality", stretching from Texas all the way to Maine in the northeast.
A NASA map shows the full trajectory of the eclipse across the states, including times it will occur on April 8. Starting in Texas at around 1:30 p.m. CDT, the eclipse will occur in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and finally in Maine at 3:30 p.m. EDT. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan may also experience the total solar eclipse.
"Everywhere outside of the path of totality will only experience a partial solar eclipse, of course, as long as it's not cloudy," Lada told Newsweek.

If you're planning to look skyward to see the event, you need to be prepared. NASA advises using the correct equipment to prevent causing serious damage to your eyes.
"When watching the partial phases of the solar eclipse directly with your eyes, which happens before and after totality, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses ("eclipse glasses") or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times," NASA explains. You can also use an indirect viewing method, such as a pinhole projector."

thoughts on watcher if you've had time to play it?
Tumblr media
im so happy you're here we welcome you!- rough wip
rambling in the tags about the dlc!
#ask#anonymous#rain world#survivor#hunter#watcher#monk#alright sooo i have complicated feelings#ive only finished the first ending so far!#my overall opinions are very positive! the places were breathtaking and the new ecosystems and their little secrets were suuuper interestin#albeit feeling every empty sometimes. and unpolished..#which brings me to my biggest issue is the map design really?#the way the decided to split the regions and never allowing them to flow and evolve as you explored them was sooo disappointing#esp because some felt more interesting when they were bigger#like ill be in stormy coast and go in a portal... and be still in stormy coast but.. different OOoOo#and when ur campaign is immitating being lost through time and space thats a bit meh?#along with the map design#it felt very unlike rainworld in some places?#like either limiting or having one path or hell- even feeling like a level not a world#and that was meeh#and thats my biggest issues so far. the world design. i completely do NOT AT ALL understand complains with the story or 'vagueness'#the story was VERY CLEAR#LIKE VERY CLEAR LIKE the watcher was VERY OPEN about its story compared to survi#you are lost with this little kid through time and space and you are helping her move on by being the only constant in their life#and watcher relates to being robbed of a childhood through the death of their family#they feel alone and lost and unfitting#searching for smth#WHICH watcher feels like an awesome mirror to survivor#ill ponder about that as survivors story is about accepting the loss of family and ascending#but watcher seems to put a lot of emphasis on rot and going UP instead. running away from the void sea- IM YET TO SEE MORE THO

love the absolutely ridiculous degree to which Aaravos misunderstands why Claudia is so disturbed by the unicorn skeleton, like she's reliving a moment of traumatic childhood disillusionment and existential crisis over the inevitability of death for even the most legendarily good and magical of creatures and his response is "don't worry, ghosts aren't real"

One of my favorite types of Rain World rooms are rooms that supposedly have additional cameras/room connections, but they don't.
What do I mean by this? here is an example:
Tumblr media
LF_J01 is one of the rooms that bugged me the most, especially when when I notice it during my countless rain deer rides. It's eye catching and makes you wonder if you can bring a grappling worm all the way from the Underhang just to test your dumb theory, only to realize it's not true and be so disappointed.
Fun fact, Rain World Drought is perfectly using this room's potential: by using it as a connection between your starting region and Farm Arrays.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The tutorial room also gets it's own secret, where eventually you find out about it at the start of the Spearmaster campaign. Downpour in fact have a lot of these, and it's one of my favorite additions in this DLC.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not a secret, just a whole huge region connected through this singular room connection.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately SI_C09 didn't receive any additional room connections from the DLC. I remember the first and only time this room tricked me like the fool that I am, into thinking there is a continuation, and got me to jump cluelessly to the left and fall to my death. I guess it's had to do with how open seems this part of Sky Islands look. Gameplay wise I can understand why it stops there, from that point you guided to go up into the heart of the region. And expanding the room from that point, kind of adds too much to the region and makes it more chaotic and confusing to navigate than it needs to be.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, this room always seemed odd to me.
Considering that you climb up towers many times in Rain World, it's not very visually appealing when you can't climb up to a place that looks like it has an upper part.
But in all of the presented rooms, you can quite understand why continuing on the region from there would be weird. You have to create a weird fork in the map that distract the player from actually progressing through the game's entire map. And often it makes them get lost and frustrated. this is one of the common causes that makes new players lose their interest in Rain World.
Although you could also go against that point by claiming that Rain World's core gameplay is exploring and getting lost in the world, or at least is what makes the game so appealing. And expanding the region would help increase that feeling of being lost in a complex simulated ecosystem.
I can still understand that for vanilla Rain World, this game is not for everyone. but I mean if you chose to play Downpour as your first experience, that is kind of your problem. Because the whole point of the DLC is to expand significantly the map of the known world.
uh, um. I think got a little bit carried away, lol. This post is still about silly rooms, but I feel like I can't really talk about cool rooms and regions without talking about their important role in the core gameplay.

Loz fandom stop being angsty and give the daydreaming kids on big fun adventures with a cool glowing sword some actual whimsy and joy challenge
#It's like the happy media equals angsty fandom and vice versa but like. Video game series about the dreams and adventures of childhood with#A fandom full of angst and abandonment and depression and smut#It's why I don't really stay in the loz fandom long each time I circle back around#There's so much potential for good things and comfort and snuggly warmth and lightheartedness.#Like yeah messed up things happen in front of and to link but kids are resilient beasts and most importantly they fix it#He's literally wearing the Peter pan hat to invoke that sort of eternal wonder that's the DESIGN of the hat that's why it's so identifiable#Fanart captures it a lot. The gorgeous landscapes and quiet moments and dappled sunlight#But fics???? Oh lu fics are just full of miscommunication and resentment and sour interactions and pain and simmering anger#I prefer to read trusted authors because it's so wearing but the problem is you have to go out and find them lol#It's a very controversial belief of mine that every link enjoyed their adventure even if it was scary or sad and would not be averse to#Another. Oh the circumstances they might hate. But link has never been one to refuse the call#That's the POINT they stepped up when the adults couldn't it's their COURAGE that they'd be fastest to volunteer.#Unrelated but post game botk is adhd central you can do literally whatever you want and whatever pace and you just drift around getting#Distracted and teleporting all over and setting challenges and poking around every nook and cranny#Like botw I had over 300 koroks and 98% map completion. I maxed out hero's path twice over. Totk I've just been wandering around#Speed farming lynels like 17 different goals drifting from one to the other as I wish. Still missing the last 2 sage orbs NO idea where#There's like a million hinoxs now tf#loz#legend of zelda#lu#linked universe#ao3

So, sometimes while playing botw/totk, I like to take out my horses and do long journeys across Hyrule, to take a break from fast travelling and completing quests.
Since I just got a new horse way down south (her name's Urania!), it seemed like the perfect excuse to take the long way to Link's house. Usually I map out the way before hand, so I know which route to take, and what stables/towns we are stopping at. Because I wanna feel like Aragorn I suppose.
This was the completed route, starting in Highland Stable, Faron, towards Link's House in Akkala:
Tumblr media
It took us about 2.5 days to make the journey, with 3 stable stops in Dueling Peaks, Woodlands, and finally Foothill, with a short stop in Kakariko Village to get some supplies and food.
I realise now I could've continued north towards Riverside Stable, instead of east Dueling Peaks but. Oh well. It was a very pleasant trip either way!
(pics and deets below):
Tumblr media
So, we took off from Highland Stable and headed east, around Lake Hylia. Crossing the Hylia bridge would be easier, but there's a fire gleeok there and I'm very scared 😌💙
It wasn't easy to cross Farosh hills on horse, but we made it! Took us a day's worth.
(I forgot the Big Twin bridge wasn't in use, so I did try my best to find a different way for Urania to cross, but no deal. I had to cheat a little and use the stable boarding function 🥺)
Tumblr media
Then next day we took off early and stopped by Kakariko to buy some more arrows for me and carrots for the horsie 🥹🥕
Tumblr media
Left the village by 9:30, passed by Wetland stable, and continued north to Woodland stable.
Tumblr media
We spent the night, and I left Urania there while I took care of some nearby affairs (aka a shrine and a couple other things). She behaved super well so I mafe sure to give her some extra apples before we took off again 🥹
We only had a few hours of daylight left, so we only went around Trilby Valley, and stopped at Foothill for the night (horse girlie needs to rest and also I didn't wanna be arsed with all the stalkoblins and such 🙃).
Tumblr media
Next morning we left early once again, and after some very annoying storms and rain, we at last reached home 🥹💙
Tumblr media
It was Urania's first journey EVER, and she did wonderfully 🥹💙🐎

If you walked in on the Linked Universe Links sitting around camp, which character would you sit down next to? Not which character is your favorite, who do you think you'd get along with in real life?
I'm going with the assumption that I am meeting them for the first time and have never heard of Legend of Zelda so I don't know who they are.
Ok so tragically you're right on the distinction between my fave not being the one I'd sit next to. My favorite is Four. He's such a funky little guy. I want to study him as a project for a graduate degree. Unfortunately, what makes him interesting is all mental for him, which results in him appearing quiet and like he wants to be left alone so if I randomly stumbled on a chain of Links*, I would probably be wary of pissing him off by sitting next to him.
Just logically, if they're camping (and let me join in the first place), then I'd probably wind up next to Wild, just because I'd imagine the whole etiquette of the backpacking world of sharing fires and even meals* would probably exist for SOME of the Links, and I enjoy cooking, and the challenge of cooking over fires**. Then of course, conversation flows and I can see Twilight and Sky being the most talkative genuinely, while Time and Warriors are trying to slyly get information from me. Legend might also, or he might watch from a distance. I know he's a big softie, but in this hypothetical, I'd be wary.
You notice this is more of me reacting to how I think they'd react to anyone, and not me choosing a buddy and sitting down. I worked in team building for a while and never shook the habit of watching group dynamics, so. Especially as the only gal (unless we're doing a version where one of the Links is a gal, but I don't think that'd really change how THEY act) then I do have the "meet a random guy or meet a random bear" thing that I'm now gambling 9 fold on which uh. Yeah.
*I enjoy hiking and backpacking (even tho I don't have the time to do it a lot) so in this situation I would have like. Modern camping gear (a hammock Wind would try to steal) and just be hanging out and slowly realizing that these guys are NOT in fact larping some fantasy shit like idk a D&D group hang out, but actually dead serious.
**i had a job as a WFR for a backpacking class in college and we camped on the Appalachian Trail and the teacher had brought extra food and refills for like first aid kits for people through hiking the AT so they could restock their stuff and have a hot meal. the person bringing the stuff is called a Trail Angel and it's adorable that there's a culture of just showing up and breaking bread with strangers.
As our class was finishing up dinner, this guy with a backpack and dressed completely in tan entered the campsite and we invited him to have some food. He chatted with the teacher and said "yeah they call me Twilight. For obvious reasons." And dear reader, those reasons are not at all obvious. Like, we certainly met him at twilight, but does he show up at sunset consistently enough he earned the name, and no one sees him during h th e day or night? I don't know. I still wonder. But it's just funny that he was an absolute beanpole called TWILIGHT when LoZ Twilight (Lu and other au's is extremely buff.
***I went to an outdoor adventure leadership conference and at one point decided to make a cheesecake in a Dutch oven. It was DELICIOUS although I couldn't serve slices because the gal who brought the springform pan brought one with a goddamn TEXTURED BOTTOM that was a nightmare to clean. Baffles me.
But that conference was fun because everyone else in my major (chemistry) were like "I went to a conference and presented research that wasn't going well. I was very nervous" and I was like "I went to a conference and built a tent blindfolded. Also our school was the only one whose tents didn't flood the first night so there."

The Barbaric Archipelago.
We know it. We love it.
And it's massive.
I've been researching the heck out of Hiccup's map for Path of Alfheim.
And though right now the story takes place primarily on Berk (which deserves a map of its own, and I'm working on it) the interactive map of their world is without a doubt, the first thing I open when I start a writing session.
This is the official DreamWorks HTTYD Map of the Barbaric Archipelago, designed by none other than Hiccup Haddock the |||.
Here ye, here ye, fellow fanfic writers. This one saved my ass. Have at it.
But BE AWARE-
Within five seconds of laying eyes on this thing, I immediately noticed that Berserker Island is missing... Which is confirmed to be a massive slip up on DreamWorks' behalf.
And I do have to admit that some distances within the map do not make sense. For example Valka's nest and Eret's Port are both further away from Berk than Dragon's Edge. And according to the map (and RTTE) it takes about thirty-two hours to get to the Edge from Berk on dragon back. Which is almost a two day flight, yet somehow in the second movie it took Hiccup and Astrid less than a few hours to fly back to Berk from Eret's Port?
ALSO VALKA'S NEST WAS SO DAMN CLOSE TO DRAGON'S EDGE??? HELLO??? SHE WAS RIGHT THERE!!!
