Reality TV is a genre that is designed to evoke discussion and shared opinions, not only in terms of judging the participants’ behaviors. but also by examining the authenticity of what they are watching. The discourse is not confined to homes and workplaces but also on online forums, web comments, and social media (Deller, 2020).

'Anh Trai Say Hi,' a phenomenon among Vietnamese media, is a reality music show where 30 participants will go through the process of refining themselves through each round to have the opportunity to appear in the winning band lineup.

The show features a dynamic lineup of 30 participants, blending established icons in today’s music industry with promising rising stars and micro-celebrities. This star-studded mix has captured a vast audience, drawing viewers from traditional TV screens to other social platforms.

Managing participants' online image

In this day and age, when everything is interconnected, these participants also utilize social platforms (i.e., Facebook and Instagram) to build their brand image and personality and strengthen the connection with the audience. There is a perception that internet stars, such as reality stars or idols, should remain in touch with their amateur, humble roots in order to appear authentic (Deller, 2020, p. 166).

This process also offers celebrities potential access to audience opinion without having it pre-filtered for them, also shifting the audience opinion toward a participant (Deller, 2020). Through these behind-the-scenes videos, the audience can observe the 'backstage' version of celebrity presentation.

Scandal surrounding Negav

During the live show of 'Anh Trai Say Hi,' Negav, one of the show's participants, has stated loudly to the audience and specifically to his mom that he has made the right decision to drop out and pursue music (Tuyet, 2024). After the live show has ended, the news has hit every social platform and received a plethora of negative reactions from the netizens, with a consensus opinion that 'a public figure should never encourage their audience to drop out.'. In my opinion, as a celebrity with a core audience of teenagers, you should be mindful of how much influence you have on your fans, and you should be held accountable for your actions.

Since the scandal happened, he has stopped all of his projects for 3 to 4 months to alleviate the negativity surrounding his name, though he did make an appearance in the 'Say Hi Never Say Goodbye' concert in Hanoi. The decision to reappear on a live concert when he has not cleared his scandal has once again reignited the negativity toward him and the production company.

In conclusion, Negav's continued presence on television ultimately depends on the audience's approval. As long as a significant number of viewers support him, he will remain on the screen; only a complete withdrawal of that support would lead to his disappearance.
