I’m a Husky
As a graduating senior, Cassidy Larkin is an early childhood/special education dual major from Whitehall with a focus in language arts. She was an active member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority and served as a Husky Orientation Workshop Leader.
“I chose education, because I wanted to make a difference in young children's lives,” Larkin says. “I wanted to be an advocate for some students who might not have that voice for them. I wanted to do more than just teach and be someone for these students to rely on.”
“I’ve always had a passion for leadership. I’ve always been a leader, rather than a follower throughout most of my life and wanted to continue that in my undergraduate education at Bloomsburg through my clubs and organizations.”
Bloomsburg's program of education has successfully gotten me ready for a teaching position.
“I’ve been prepared through observations, practicum experience, and student teaching,” Larkin says. “I’ve seen many different environments of teaching, all different than the next. All environments have inspired me to become the best educator I can, all thanks to Bloomsburg.”
“The first day of school in the fall of 2017, I strutted around campus, confused, dazed, but of course I didn't want to make that known to the students passing by. I look back on this memory and clearly remember walking to Foundations of Writing in Bakeless, and having absolutely no idea where I was going. I ran into a face I’ll always remember and that was my professor at the time, Dr. Stephen Whitworth. He may not realize how my little interaction meant the first day of my college experience to me. I’ve changed tremendously from that first day of school. I was unsettled, nervous, unexcited, and trembling. Now, I’m excited, motivated, proud, and engaged in my future at hand.”
“BU has left the impression on me that I can do anything I set my mind to while leaving long-lasting real-world relationships and experiences.”
“College graduation is anticipated to be the journey coming to an end of adolescences. Now it's our time as the Class of 2021 to go onto the job market, to find that perfect position suited just for us. This pandemic has shaped me into the person I am. Never could I’ve imagined I’d be graduating with the pandemic still occurring or becoming vaccinated for a virus that has killed millions. Unique doesn't begin to describe my experience. This experience is one I believe has affected more than others, but overall has impacted the Class of 2021. We saw our semesters go virtual, and we saw semesters be in-person. The semesters continued along with the pandemic, and now that our time has come, it feels surreal. I do believe if this pandemic wasn't occurring, our reality would feel more real. It went by fast, but now the time has come.”
“At the face of the pandemic, going into our second semesters as juniors, the Class of 2021 had immediately gained an added. Class of 2020, my heart goes to you for a virtual graduation, which is something I dreaded going into my senior year with that throughout occurring. Although this resiliency has been built up through the pandemic, we all are experiencing, if anything, this built-up resilience we’ve been given has brought us to be tougher individuals mentally and emotionally. I believe those who are graduating will have a step ahead of others for the bounce back of resilience we’ll give back to our community. We were strong through it, now the bounce back is coming just in time for us out into the real world. Personally, I’m ready for the world to give me the best times to come. My added resilience has gotten me ready for what life is going to bring me, through handling pressures and deadlines I may need to meet.”
“Bloomsburg University has brought people in my life I never thought I would've met. It’s cliche when asked what you’ll miss most to say … the people, but I wouldn't be who I am without the people I’ve met here. The adventures, the study dates, the events, nothing would've made me … without this.”
“The people at Bloomsburg are people I can see myself with at years to come, traveling with, living with, and pursuing careers with. The memories made here with these students have brought me everything I would've wanted in a college experience, plus a little more. They say college will be the best four years of your life, but I couldn't have made it the best four years without these people beside me.”

This is a gem of a photo series. *** #AsterSmock #catsofinstagram #catselfie [Description 1: A photo of me with my cat. She is sitting in a green lounge chair, and I have my arm on over the arm of the chair. She is looking at me and I am smiling at the camera, wearing glasses, a purple baseball cap, and a purple #PhiSigmaPi galaxy lettered sweatshirt. Description 2: A similar photo, except I am looking back at her. Description 3: She's curled up, extending her legs to the arm of the chair, showcasing her blue collar with a sun, star, planet, and crescent moon patterned collar. Description 4: She's laying now, with her back against the arm of the chair. Her fur pattern is detailed on the top of her head with cream cat eye liner. Description 5: She is yawning. A rather blurry picture that shows her pink cat tongue!]

Women’s History Month Young Alumna Profile
Lucelis Ortega ’18, Marketing
Ortega works for Travelers Insurance as an inside auto claims professional. Her responsibilities include investigating and analyzing the necessary facts to determine coverage and causation of the auto accident and help customers through the repair process all while delivering consistent customer service.
Lucelis is a 2018 Bloomsburg University graduate with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a concentration in emergent media. She was very involved on campus as a student serving as the event planner for the American Marketing Association; was a marketing intern for the office of sports information and marketing; was a member of the Speech and Debate Team, a Phi Sigma Pi Honors Fraternity member, and a Her Campus member. Lucelis was also a Board of Governor's mentor, a volunteer in the Multicultural Center, and worked in the Women’s Resource Center.
How did you get into working at Traveler’s Insurance?
I initiallymet my current boss at the Bloomsburg ZIPD conference and obtained his business card. I set up a meeting to go to and the office and during the visit, I spoke with a couple of managers and some recent Bloomsburg grads. After talking with everyone and receiving a tour of the office, I immediately felt like I belonged. I applied the day after, and the rest is history.
What do you love about your job?
I truly love the environment and how amazing all my bosses and coworkers are. In any job, there will be stressful days but every day they make coming into work fun and worth it. I also love all the opportunities I receive to grow as a professional. I am incredibly proud to work for a company that cares so much about their employees.
Who have been your female role models?
Throughout my college experience, I’ve had three main role models, my mom; Albra Wheeler, the Women’s Resource Center coordinator; and Denise Chaytor-Zugarek, the retention specialist in TRiO. These three are by far the strongest women I have ever known and could not have been as successful as I am without them. I could never thank them enough.
What advice do you have for young females going out looking for that first job?
I would say to be fearless. We often get very discouraged and shy especially when networking but using your voice is essential in getting what you want. You have all the power to make yourself successful.
If you could go back in time, what advicewould current Lucelis give to undergrad Lucelis or just after graduation Lucelis?
I would tell myself to slow down, enjoy the moment, and everything will fall into place. I was always so worried about not finding a job or not being successful that I did not take the time to enjoy my last few months in college.
What do you enjoy most about your current position?
I love the fact that every day is different, it is fast paced and I am never bored. I also really love the feeling I get knowing I made a difficult process for a customer much less stressful.
Where do you see yourself in five years? 10 years?
In five years I see myself working as an account manager, hopefully for Travelers insurance. I would love to meet new people as well as help organize and create strategic plans to better the business. I can’t say what life has in store for me in 10 years. Ihaven’t thought about it that far butI hope that I am happy and healthy.
What motivated you to want to come back for Boot Camp?
I wanted to be able to help students develop their professionalism as well as calm their anxieties and worries about life after graduation. I know how scary it can be and how refreshing it is to see someone that was in their exact position a year ago letting them know that everything will be okay.
