You're cool
I just played a game of sealed where my opponent played 2 rares and then finished me off with a fucking planeswalker. Why are there rares in limited. Getting away from rare-spam is the entire reason why I play limited.
I then went on ranked and styled on an opponent who had like 80% of their spells be random rare/mythic bullshit so that was some good catharsis

Hilarious that Tezzeret did all that work with the Phyrexians just to get a Darksteel body, but his new card still doesn't have indestructible. Get Wrecked Disco Dick!
Can't believe I missed this ask that gives me more opportunity to dunk on Tezzeret. Anyway, good job wasting all that time, buddy, I've got a Hero's Downfall for that ass. All that effort, just to get undone by simply plus 1-ing Garruk Apex Predator. By the time your ass hits the field, I'll have enough mana to obliterate it on sight with The Elderspell.
Bitch.

The Therapeutic Properties of Smashing Stuff
When Kaya arrives in Kaldheim, she expects to be swept away in Tyvar's endless enthusiasm. To be able to forget about the entire mess Oba made of Ravnica and the Phyrexian Invasion that instigated it all. But when she finally meets the elf, he's uncharacteristically somber.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's easy to forget sometimes, with his youth and general bravado, that Tyvar Kell can be incredibly perceptive. So when he looks at Kaya and immediately announces they need to do something else before their long-awaited fishing trip, she just sighs and keeps pace with him.
They stop quite a distance away from the sea, at an unassuming rocky outcrop. Before she can ask what they are even doing there, Tyvar has already trasmuted a crude Warhammer out of the stone and shoved it into her hands.
She just stands there for a moment, holding the weapon, before asking "So… What am I doing with this?"
Tyvar gives her a grin that could rival the sun in brightness, before pointing at her "You," he shifts, pointing to the hammer "needs to smash," and to the rock in front of her "some stuff. It will help."
A moment of silence.
"… I'm not sure I follow?"
Tyvar hums, then approaches the closest boulder and says "let's see if this helps" before he touches it, his magic quickly shaping the rock into a crude but immediately recognizable bust.
She feels her fists tighten around the hammer instinctively.
It is clearly not to scale, of course, but that matters little for something as unique as Elesh Norn's headpiece. Kaya finally understands what Tyvar is going for here and gladly takes the opportunity.
The stone Norn is beautiful as it breaks down into pebbles from her swings.
Tyvar helps her along, conjuring more images of Phyrexians from the boulder: she tears apart obliterators, praetors, even the horrors that Phyrexia dared call "angels."
She doesn't know when, exactly, the figures she's destroying stop being supplied by her friend's magic.
With multiple swings, she smashes the rest of the Gatewatch. Teferi, who got HIS own happy ending; Ajani and Nissa, who let themselves be compleated in the first place — even though she knows, truly KNOWS, it was not their fault; Jace, self-sacrificial to a fault; Chandra, who left her alone to pick up the pieces of a group she wasn't even a founder of!
She strikes down the guildmasters of Ravnica, too caught up in their own self-importantance to realize everyone, everywhere is just as hurt if not more.
She tears down Oba, for daring to kill Teysa.
She swings a final time at an image of herself, for being so weak as to let it happen in the first place.
In the end, what had once been a boulder is unrecognizable, broke down into smaller parts. She's panting, barely able to raise the hammer again with how tired her arms are.
"So," Tyvar says, taking the chipped and cracked hammer from her "feeling better?"
Her response catches in her throat and she doesn't know if the sound that comes out of her mouth is closer to a laugh or a sob. She meets his gaze.
"I think… I need to smash another boulder."

Ideas to finish the cycle of phyrexian obliterator and phyrexian vindicator
Phyrexian Accelerator- RRRR 5/5
Haste
Whenever a source deals damage to Phyrexian Accelerator, Phyrexian Accelerator deals that much damage to each opponent.
Phyrexian Manipulator- UUUU 5/5
Whenever a source deals damage to Phyrexian Manipulator, each player mills thrice that many cards.
Phyrexian Contaminator- GGGG 5/5
Toxic 1
Whenever a source deals damage to Phyrexian Contaminator, proliferate that many times.

to the praetors... why do the Phyrexian Obliterator and Vindicator look the way they do? to strike awe in people? or fear?
The Phyrexian Obliterator is made in the image of Yawgmoth's first creations. The Negators are said to "exist to cease", and the Obliterators are their progeny through the ichor's memory. Beautiful in their simplicity, really! And oh so good at cracking porcelain, aren't they, Norn?
-S
They would be put to a far better use advancing Phyrexia's unified glory. Instead, you cower in shadows and attack me with your glorified puppets. My own Vindicators are bulwarks of holiness, like the body of Atraxa which I elevated to such perfection.
-E
"I"? Ha! Good one. And I thought you were into that whole group work thing. If only you hadn't invited us, and gorged yourself on the glory you want so bad... you wish it now, don't you? Inconvenient~

holy shit. literally every single person increases in fuckability after compleation except for jace. it. that's kind of impressive
please smash or pass tezzeret, jace beleren, kaito, tamiyo, nicol bolas and ugin. i am fascinated by the recent mtg arc of this blog. your answers are so interesting.
okay i had an entire writeup for this ask halfway done and then i made the mistake of clicking on a single tumblr link while i was looking for character references and i lost everything immediately. so. i'll reblog with the actual list in a bit. once i rewrite it. and recover from that immeasurable psychic damage.

Falter
The Omenpath had been guarded for a while now, with each vampire-demon that came through easily obliterated by the combined guard of akki and Dokuchi Reckoners. Goro-Goro had three dragon spirits summoned alongside his lightning, Zenkuro’s sais had been cleaned from his most recent kill already, and Haruko ensured that the dark of the night was their shield rather than their downfall. And back behind them were others who could aid – Azzie, Ruby, Dusk-Fur, Redlash, and the Warren of Dragons were ready to step in if needed, and Atsushi was a mere shout away. They had already fought off multiple transformed vampires that came through, but they could tell that something big was coming.
Goro-Goro brandished his sword and drew upon the mountain’s mana, feeling the energy course through his veins like it always did. He masked it from the others, but he could feel himself weakening. He had been holding the line solo before Azzie, Ruby, and Zenkuro got there. And even now, he was the strongest of them, able to destroy their enemies from the moment they stepped from the Omenpath.
Another trio of vampire-demons came through, and Goro-Goro raised his sword to draw more lightning into it once more. Zenkuro and Haruko beat him to the punch, however, by tackling two of them. Dusk-Fur beat him to the third vampire-demon by kicking it in the face. He let out a sigh of relief and lowered his sword. His kidneys ached from the magical strain he was experiencing. He had been holding the Omenpath since it opened, but even now that he had allies to guard it, he didn’t want to let his warren down.
“Another coming through!” Zenkuro bellowed, raising his sais and sliding into a fighting stance again. Goro-Goro took a deep breath and brandished his sword one more time.
The thing that came through the Omenpath was more bat than vampire, but it stood almost as tall as Zenkuro and had a pair of arms separate from its wings, in which it brandished a flail. Black mana poured off of it, a disgusting taste of swamp and cavern which made Goro-Goro’s mouth go dry. A bloodletter, according to what Azzie had told him about Torrezon’s foes that were coming through the Omenpath. But something was wrong.
Something was very wrong.
As Goro-Goro brandished his wakizashi to call down the lightning of Ryusei, he felt his scars from the Phyrexian Invasion a few years prior split open. His breath caught in his lungs, and he heard the other mortals behind him hit the ground and cry out in pain. Just the mere presence of this beast made Goro-Goro’s blood drip from his scars.
Zenkuro let out a roar that shook the very mountain they stood on and launched himself at the enemy, catching its flail in one hand and yanking it from the monster’s grasp before catching its hands. Haruko appeared from the bloodletter’s own shadows, gripping its wings in her skeletal limbs and planting her foot against it to try to rip the wings from its back.
Goro-Goro gasped for air and brandished his sword. He called not on lightning – he didn’t have the mana for that – but on the dragon spirits he had already summoned. One of the three charged in and, thankfully, bit the bloodletter’s head clean off in the same moment that Haruko ripped its wings from its back and Zenkuro ripped its arms off.
“Good job, Goro-Goro!” Zenkuro called over his shoulder as he continued to rip into the bloodletter. He had taken to tasting their foes, as most oni would.
“Good,” Goro-Goro managed to get out. He was swaying on his feet, the ground swirling under him. “Good. Keep holding line.”
He dropped to his knees.
His wakizashi hit the ground a moment before he did.
The last thing he heard before the world went dark was Redlash yelling for a healer and Azzie scrambling to get to their communicator.

Negator (Monster)
Tumblr media
(Phyrexian Negator by John Zeleznik)
CR16 NE Medium Aberration (Phyrexian)
(The negator is another iconic creature, although one whose card is simply not up to snuff nowadays- the balance of power has tipped so that its astronomical drawback is not worth the creature you get. Still, the obliterator is clearly a riff on it- and got its own, incredibly aesthetically boring riff later- and even then it's simply too fabulous a design not to use. Can you say "xenomorph"?
Lorewise, these explicitly saw most usage in the leadup to full invasion- perhaps, in a hypothetical Phyrexia campaign, this could be the final boss of the second act, before the REAL invasion force finally arrives.)
CR16 NE Medium Aberration (Phyrexian)
Negators are perfected assassins of Phyrexia, designed to eliminate key targets with compleat efficiency. They are singleminded in this pursuit- one infamous document stated simply "It exists to cease." Indeed, a negator's heart is terribly stilled- they are not known to experience any emotion but the satisfaction of a job well done and the desire to achieve so.
Negators, being stealth operatives and assassins, are rarely used once a full-scale invasion begins, although they are often deployed just in the leadup to it. Each negator is given all Phyrexia knows of its target, and is simply placed as close as Phyrexia can get it without garnering attention and sent to kill. Negators are surprisingly skilled at stealth and disguise, able to walk as a hunched figure through whatever streets it may need to to reach its target, and are surprisingly eloquent and skilled actors when they need to lie. Once it makes its kill, however, a negator rarely makes time for stealth. Such negators will begin a return to Phyrexia (such that they might possibly be reset, reprogrammed, and reused), but generally lack the precautions of one who has yet to make a kill. These assassinations are its purpose; it seems some higher part of it shuts off once it is done.
This wicked creature stands humanoid, with razor sharp claws and a smooth nubby head lined with tiny triangular teeth. Its body is dotted with glasslike hemispheres and wires arcing between body parts.

A negator may make a sneak attack against any creature vulnerable to precision damage as long as it has moved at least 10ft since the end of its last turn. Negation (Su)- As a standard action, a negator can fire a beam of oblivion energy. This is a 90ft ranged attack that deals 10d8 untyped damage. Additionally, a negator may immediately make a dispel check as with the spell Greater Dispel Magic at +18 against all magical effects the target is under.

Did you know that in Magic, combat damage isn't dealt automatically? And I don't just mean choosing what order to damage blockers, I mean that according to section 510 of the comprehensive rules, you're technically supposed to choose how to divide your attacker's combat damage among its blockers. Manually. And you have to assign lethal damage to the first blocker in the order you chose before assigning damage to the one after it, and so on, so it doesn't really matter ever because you just kill as many blockers as possible in order.
But today on Arena was the first time I ever manually assigned combat damage. An opponent used this little jerk to steal one of my creatures
Tumblr media
And then I attacked with a big creature. They blocked with the Rangers, my stolen creature, and a 1/1, and my attacker had enough power to kill all of them. But I thought "hey, if I kill ONLY the rangers and the 1/1, I'll just get my creature back, right? Can I do that? Is that how damage assignment works?" So I opened the options menu, switched off auto damage assignment, put my stolen creature last in the damage order, and went to the damage step...
And it worked! I was able to assign 0 damage to my stolen creature, and just put the excess on the 1/1! I killed both their creatures and got my creature back unharmed! I bet the opponent was SUPER confused at how they threw my stolen creature at my attacker in a suicide block and my attacker just said "no" and refused to hurt it lol.
