don't you dare bring down past versions of yourself. presenting themselves as stepping stones which bring you a bit closer to yourself each single day, they are the only reason you still stand. it is not by chance that grown trees shade young seedlings with their lush crowns, rescuing them from the burning Sun. one of the primary things you owe yourself is to take care of your past versions. when sadness weaves around you like a cloak, when you wish to bring yourself down for past mistakes, when you lay awake at night contemplating each single action you have taken...do not indulge. speak patiently with the version of yourself which yearns for your comfort. have the strength to choose the option of overflowing with love and compassion. it is one of the the most loving acts you can perform towards yourself.

Two days ago I finally underwent surgery to remove my reproductive organs. I wish my sister could have been there for the success. See she died almost 3 years ago after having the same procedure done except with a few major differences. She had recently been diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had been bleeding heavy enough to need transfusions before undergoing the operation. Our mom had a similar experience except she never went through the surgery due to a botched D and C that worsened her bleeding. She’s survived this long so maybe she doesn’t actually have the cancer.

I did what they had not as far keeping up on my health, being on birth control when not trying to get pregnant, my husband got a vasectomy so I wouldn’t have to do this surgery originally, but then I started having issues with irregular cycles and passing huge clots that tend to be signs of the cancer. I was determined to do what I could to be here for my kids and husband for a while yet. Thankfully, things went well and now I’m recovering.

I share this to bring awareness that medical history does not affect just you. It affects those you love as well. My sister might have had a better chance if she had known that our grandmother had a hysterectomy where they found evidence of this cancer. Talk to your elders about health concerns they face and that others may have faced. Track your own and make sure your kids know eventually too.

The first weekly cause I'll highlight is the Smithsonian Institution digital volunteer program. With science and knowledge being attacked and defunded on all fronts recently, these sorts of programs are more important than ever. Instead of doom scrolling, you can try to invest your time in more proactive ways and it doesn't cost a cent. Whether you prefer transcribing hand written notes, hunting down the sources of pictures, translating existing articles, or editing related Wikipedia pages, there's a little something for everyone to sink their teeth into. I've personally really liked the challenge of transcribing and I like that it's a communal effort so I never feel too defeated if I get stuck. Hope this helps to brighten your day!
