Qubitcore Secures OIST Spin-Out Funding and Licensing to Lead Japan's Ion-Trap Quantum Computers

Qubitcore Inc., spun off from Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, reported a key step towards mainstream deployment of Japanese-made ion-trap quantum computers. The Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture-based startup has signed an exclusive IP licensing arrangement with OIST and secured a pre-seed funding round led by the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Lifetime Ventures Fund. This agreement advances fault-tolerant quantum computing devices and takes effect on June 1, 2025.

Distributed Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing Architecture

Qubitcore aims to construct distributed quantum computing platforms using optical resonators and ion traps. Through the exclusive licensing agreement, Qubitcore will inherit and build on OIST's Experimental Quantum Information Physics Unit's research achievements. Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Innovation's Proof of Concept (POC) program funded this research.

The “Realization of a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer that will dramatically advance economy, industry, and security by 2050” national initiative aims to build photonic interconnects and ion traps-based quantum computers.

The innovative Qubitcore approach uses distributed quantum computing (DQC). This architecture overcomes the scaling constraints of traditional quantum processing units by integrating Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology ion-trap modules with integrated optical cavities, resonant structures that capture light for effective ion–photon interaction, and a photonic connection network. This arrangement enables high-speed, high-fidelity remote entanglement between modules, enabling scalable distributed quantum computing. Qubitcore optimises QPU performance and optically connects them to build large-scale systems that were previously impossible with standard ion-trap techniques, enabling fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Pre-Seed Funding and Bold Plan

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Lifetime Ventures Fund pre-seed funding will accelerate Qubitcore's early development. Hire specialised research team, prototype ion-trap modules with optical cavities, and buy experimental equipment using the cash. Qubitcore plans to supplement equity financing with non-dilutive capital like NEDO funds.

Qubitcore has outlined a multi-phase roadmap for FTQC adoption:

Present a first-generation experimental quantum error correcting testbed in 2028. 2029: Show a second-generation prototype with photonic connections across modules to indicate architectural possibilities for 1,000-qubit-class processors. This architecture should be commercialised by 2030. These aims can be achieved by focused R&D in high-efficiency quantum error correction, experimental validation of photonic links, and modular ion-trap integration. The company will also begin constructing a control platform for quantum computing services.

Ryuta Watanuki, founder and CEO of Qubitcore Inc., said, “They are honoured to join the community of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology-originated startups and to receive support from Lifetime Ventures This is a big step towards commercialising Japan's first indigenous ion-trap quantum computer. While developing quantum computing for industrial usage, they aim to integrate it into society.

“It is extremely meaningful to see my research on quantum photonic interconnects using ion traps at OIST evolve into tangible initiatives for social implementation,” said assistant professor Hiroki Takahashi, co-founder and CSO of Qubitcore Inc. Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, Qubitcore, and Japanese and international scholars will likely collaborate to accelerate R&D.

Japan has decades of photonics and ion-trap expertise, and in recent years, national support, such as Moonshot Goal 6, which allocates JPY 148 billion (approximately USD 1.0 billion) to advance fault-tolerant universal quantum computers, has accelerated this. I think Japan's quantum hardware platform could change the world because to its worldwide talent, national plan, and deep technical legacy.

This relationship between the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology and Qubitcore represents a turning point for quantum computing in Japan by turning state-of-the-art research into real-world quantum systems that benefit the economy, industry, and security.

Drawing inspiration from the eerie reflections of “Black Mirror,” my vision was to create a captivating cinematic piece—a heartfelt tribute to the profound significance of nature. As the narrative unfolds, traces of reality gradually permeate this hyperreal experience, offering a glimpse into a future where people are immersed in virtual reality, inhabiting fictional realms, and where the very concept of nature becomes elusive.

Despite our initial attempts to materialize this project using our own resources, it remained unrealized. Fast forward to today, and the landscape of AI-driven image creation has evolved significantly. While my ambivalence toward this technology persists, I recognized an opportunity to invigorate my original concept for the short film.

Ironically, this teaser film, which explores the disconnection from our natural existence through the embrace of virtual lives, is now brought to life by computers. This paradox brings the core message of the idea ever closer to reality.

This piece is an experiment to play with new techniques and explore ways of bringing ideas to live.

JULIA ISN’T doing well. her best friend is dead. but--- she seems to be doing somewhat better than eliot and alice. she’s not entirely sure what it was that happened between quentin and the magician in front of her, but whatever it was, it’s making him handle q’s death even worse than her. despite her own pain, she remembers a certain man coming to her when she was at her lowest point and pulling her up out of it, giving her a purpose. she gently cradles eliot’s frozen fingers in hers, warming them up slowly.
