UNDEAD, a Spanish death metal band, continues to haunt the scene with their 2023 album "Putrefactio" and the single "Feast for the Worms". #undead
“Feast for the Worms” is the new video single from Spanish death metal band UNDEAD, taken from their album “Putrefactio” released in May 2023. The song delves into the inevitability of death, regardless of one’s status or wealth, emphasizing the universal fate of decay and consumption by worms. The video, shot in the iconic Sad Hill Cemetery in Burgos, Spain, known from Sergio Leone’s film “The…

“If I accept death, then my tree greens, since dying increases life. If I plunge into the death encompassing the world, then my buds break open. How much our life needs death!” ― C.G. Jung, The Red Book
Art: José Gabriel Alegría Sabogal - Putrefactio (Sol Niger), “Handbook of Sacred Anatomy”.
Sol Niger (Black Sun) can refer to the first stage of the Alchemical Magnum Opus, the Nigredo (Blackening). In a text ascribed to Marsilio Ficino three Suns are described: Black, White, and Red, corresponding to the three most used Alchemical color stages. Of the Sol Niger he writes: “The body must be dissolved in the subtlest middle air: The body is also dissolved by its own heat and humidity; where the Soul, the middle nature holds the principality in the colour of Blackness all in the glass: which Blackness of Nature the ancient Philosophers called the crows head, or the Black Sun.”
The Black Sun is used to illuminate the Dissolution of the body, a Blackening of Matter, or Putrefaction in Splendor Solis. Sol Niger symbolizes the stage of Psychological Transformation to which the Alchemical processes of Mortification or Putrefaction refer indicates the Death of a Conscious Attitude, resulting in the unfolding of a psychological center in the Self. Edinger writes that such symbols of the extinguished Conscious standpoint as “King, Sun, and Lion refer to the ruling principle of the Conscious Ego and the Power Instinct. At a certain point these must be mortified in order for a new center to emerge.”

There are times in our lives when even our most precious beliefs and realizations fall apart before our very eyes. What felt so clear only days or weeks ago dissolves into dust. Yellowed by the alchemical putrefactio—me, my life, and the way I was so sure it was supposed to turn out. It’s tempting to believe something has gone wrong, that some great cosmic mistake has occurred, that we’ve failed or been forsaken. But this sacred reassembling is the path itself. It lives in the moments of holding it all together—and in the moments when everything falls apart. In the fantasy that we’ve mastered the wildness of the human heart, the Beloved appears and turns the master into dust. Tragic, yes—but also merciful. The soul is always reaching for us. The Great Friend is always whispering, often in ways that upset the part of us that longs for control. To awaken us, the soul must sometimes dissolve the status quo, overturning the dreams of who we thought we were. In that collapse, we come to see we don’t know who or what we are. What love is. What the Divine is. Or where to find meaning. But as we deepen into this inquiry, we may come to trust this inner restructuring—not as failure, but as a fierce grace. Not the sweet, flowing grace we prefer—but the wrathful grace of Kali. Of the Tibetan goddesses. A disassembling grace. But grace nonetheless.

Pan as an Alchemical Symbol
Metamorphosis is a key theme: Pan stands as a catalyst for change, much like the alchemist transforming lead to gold. His wild, fertile energy hints at putrefactio and rebirth – the breakdown of old forms and the flowering of new life. In alchemical allegory, this is the process of solve et coagula (dissolve and recombine), mirroring nature’s cycles of decay and regeneration that Pan oversees in myth (e.g. the seasonal return of spring).
Crucially, the image emphasizes the union of opposites, a concept alchemy holds as necessary for attaining the Philosopher’s Stone. Pan’s very presence can be seen as bridging dualities: he is a spirit of wild nature (instinct) who is placed in a geometric, orderly mandala (culture/cosmos), uniting chaos and order. Alchemical art often depicted a conjunctio – a sacred marriage of male and female principles – as a hermaphroditic being or a king and queen joining. For example, the Rebis figure shows one body with male and female heads, crowned by sun and moon
Another layer is Pan’s connection to the prima materia, the “first matter” of the cosmos. Alchemists described prima materia as the chaotic, all-containing substance — “the material beginning and end of all things” that “holds the seed of perfection”
Pan’s name itself means “All”, hinting at this concept of an original unity. He embodies the living prima materia, raw nature from which order and enlightenment (the Philosopher’s Stone) will emerge. Surrounding Pan with swirling mists or a dark cosmic background at the image’s edges could represent the undefined chaos of prima materia. Out of this murky “chaos”, the elements and opposites coalesce around Pan, who orchestrates their integration. The motto inscribed in the Ouroboros — “All is One” (hen to pan) — reinforces this idea that the diverse elements, forces, and dualities are ultimately one within the primordial whole
