Tirunelveli, May 21 – Anti-Terrorism Day

On this significant day dedicated to peace and remembrance, the humble residence of Mr. V. Selvan, National UN Volunteer and medical professional, transformed into a sanctuary of memory, awareness, and collective introspection. It was here that a remarkable photo gallery—meticulously curated and passionately preserved over five decades—was unveiled for public viewing.

Inaugurated by Rtn. R. Parthiban, Principal of the School of Nursing at Tirunelveli Medical College, this one-day exhibition was not just a display of photographs; it was a deeply moving journey through the dark alleys of violence and the shining corridors of humanity’s resolve to rise above it.

The photo collection, titled "A Fullstop to Terrorism", is the life’s work of Mr. Selvan—an archive born not out of duty, but out of deep-seated conviction. Beginning at the tender age of eleven, he started collecting clippings and images from newspapers and magazines. What started as a child's instinctive curiosity has grown into a monumental archive of national memory, carefully compiled and weighing nearly 15 kilograms, rich with historical relevance and emotional depth.

The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 was the spark that lit this long-burning flame. Selvan’s heart, shaken by the tragedy, resolved to document the stories of those who fell victim to terrorism—not just to remember them, but to use their stories as a mirror for society, urging reflection, empathy, and action.

Guests and viewers—including volunteers, children, educators, and community members—were unanimous in their praise. Many stood in awe, their voices catching with emotion as they navigated the collection. The impact was palpable. Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi—three lives extinguished by hatred. I wanted their stories to be a final call—a full stop to terrorism. My aim was not only to remember them but to prevent future violence by awakening minds and hearts.”

What Mr. Selvan has built is more than a collection—it is a national treasure. It deserves to be housed, studied, and showcased across the country. As part of Women's Day celebrations, over 250 saplings were planted today on the Tirunelveli Medical College campus. The event was presided over by Dr. C. Revathy Balan, Dean of the Medical College, along with Vice Principal Dr. Suresh Durai, Medical Superintendent Dr. Balasubramaniam, and Dr. Arumuga Pandian, MD (Retd. HOD, General Medicine). Several department heads, office staff, and medical students were also present.

The initiative was organized by the Green Valley Society (GVS), an environmental movement within the medical college. Dr. Sujatha Andrew, in charge of GVS, welcomed the attendees.

Following this, saplings were planted in the hostel premises of the Nursing Training School. The event saw participation from Nursing School Principal Rtn. R. Parthiban, Vice Principal Beula, nursing faculty, students, and staff.

Everyone actively took part in planting saplings and flowers. Selvan, a distinguished nursing tutor and national UN volunteer, remarked, "Trees are God's gift to us. With them, we no longer need umbrellas to shield ourselves from the sun. Trees are the green clothing of the earth."
