Don't quite know how to put this but there are certain story beats that, in order for me to actually like/admire the story, specifically have to be accomplished without being a big deal.

Like, does your story present ordinary, mundane, even ridiculous people as possessing worth and dignity? Cool. Does it pat itself on the back about doing that? Unfortunately, that has circled back around to patronizing.

Does your character make the lives of bit characters and nameless bystanders a priority, even when it distracts them from Important Plot Things? Nice! Does your character make a big production of/express a lot of angst about doing that? This only barely edges out "leaving them to die" in terms of my respect for said character.

Ordinary people are just as valuable and important as Our Heroes. But the narrative should have enough conviction about that to take it for granted, and let the audience catch up if need be. A Hero should definitely take it for granted, unless they're still in the process of becoming heroic.

Otherwise, I'm left with the sneaking suspicion that the writers don't really see this themselves.

Don't imagine living in a small town that the guardian of positivity regularly visits. How you wish you could meet him but how he's always surrounded by people. How gentle and kind he is with everyone and how he seems to almost glow in the sunlight.

Don't imagine sitting down under a tree to rest after working all day and how Dream apparently had the same idea. How you're both startled to see another person and how he looks tired for the first time ever. How he quickly tries to disguise his exhaustion behind a smile.

Don't imagine feeling more than a little star struck and how you can't think of anything to say. How he gives you a curious look and asks if you're alright. How you can only nod in response which doesn't help make things any less awkward.

Don't imagine how he seems unsure of what to do with himself and how you reassure him that you don't want anything from him. How his mask slips for a moment and he seems relieved. How he leans back against the tree with a sigh.

Don't imagine sitting in comfortable silence until the first stars begin to appear. How Dream quietly asks how long you've been wanting to speak to him. How he reassures you and insists that he doesn't mind listening.

Don't imagine turning and looking him straight in the eye sockets. How he inadvertently glances away and how you know that he's not being entirely honest. How you tell him that you're fine and he's probably exhausted anyways.

Don't imagine him moving to sit closer to you. How his bones seem to radiate a gentle warmth. How his presence makes you feel so safe. Definitely don't imagine how he accidentally touches your hand and how you both jump at the surprise contact. How his cheekbones flush a soft yellow and he apologizes. How you can feel yourself blushing as well.

Don't imagine how he carefully takes hold of your hand again as if it's the most precious thing he's ever held. How he smiles at you and presses his skull against your forehead. How he murmurs sweet nothings to you. How you wish this moment could last forever.

Then why couldn’t you have done any of those things to the titans? I think hunting and killing them caused a lot of “undue suffering”.

The Charmer: Titans are extremophiles like us, and resistant to our magic in the best cases. Most of those are not direct uses of our magic so they could work, but because of them being extremophiles, there is absolutely no guarantee that they would be fatal, or immediately fatal. They can survive high altitude, low oxygen, high gravity, boiling, freezing, just as natural occurrences in their environment.

The Charmer: Increasing the gravity on their bodies until they are crushed under their own weight might not work because they have to be resistant to the effects on gravity on their bodies when they reach their adult size. At most this might make their legs break, or cause spinal injuries, like spinal cord and nerve compression, herniated disks, and spinal fracture.

The Charmer: Pulling all moisture from their bodies would undoubtedly kill them, but their high elevation adaptations allow them to breathe very dry, high-altitude air. This would imply that if I were to pull all moisture from the body of a Titan then they would not immediately die. They would probably feel their organs shutting down, one after another, and their skin peeling and ripping with every movement. It would be a deeply unkind death.

The Charmer: As for fatal radiation poisoning, I think the same would hold true for similar reasons. The tallest Titans, when standing straight, would be above the barrier of their world's atmosphere, encountering cosmic radiation unshielded. Every living thing besides us has a limit on how much radiation they can handle, but Titans are quite likely the only mortal that comes close to reaching us, and we feed on radiation to live. It would likely be an extremely drawn out and painful death, where they would have their skin bubble up and off, but after they've lost all their fur. There are many other unpleasant symptoms of fatal radiation exposure, but I do not think I need to describe them for you to understand that none of those methods would be anywhere near as kind as what my followers did.

The Charmer: As it is part of our duties to study all mortal life, I was sure to pick a method so instant and so painless, that none of them even had time to realize what was happening. It is part of my job to do this, and I have made many mistakes since I took on this responsibility. Though I imagine that that is inevitable, as I was the equivalent of 14 years old for your species when I started needing to do those duties. In any case, I realized very quickly that I needed to be careful to make sure it was instant. It was otherwise, quite unpleasant, to put it mildly.

Downside of taking multiple bio-intense public health classes this semester is when the toxicology units overlap like I really do not wish to spend this many hours in a week focusing on Thing That Really Fuck People Up in that way.

I did at least manage to take ONE of the essay prompts and be like "I am going to talk about proper ventilation and why it is GOOD and which ventilation methods are BETTER." And not be super depressing.

Realizing I cared way, way too much of what people thought about me in fandom. I always get overly nervous when entering any kind of new community or discussion, so that makes sense. Kinda hard to live by the words of "thou shalt be chill" when OCD is picking at your brain like you're Prometheus, but no matter what you do, what you like, what you post, someone's not going to like you for it. Have a different headcanon than someone else? Don't like their favorite ship? Who gives a shit, none of these people actually know you anyways, just the hyperspecific shit you post. Post what you like, hide what you don't, let others live by that same rule, and you'll have so much more fun.
