Orangutans, the only Great Apes native to Asia, are on the brink of extinction, with all three subspecies—Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli—classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Once widespread across Southeast Asia, orangutans now survive in fragmented populations due to habitat destruction from palm oil plantations and the illegal bushmeat trade.
