Re-evaluating NHL Regulations: Why the Trapezoid, Instigator, and Puck Over Glass Penalties Should Be Eliminated
The National Hockey League (NHL) continuously pursues the ideal balance between offense, defense, and player safety. It has implemented various rules over its long history. While some regulations have undoubtedly enhanced the game, others now appear to impede its natural flow. They diminish the showcase of player skills. Occasionally, they lead to outcomes that feel unjust, despite perhaps noble…

Regardless of the ruling today by the NHL, Leafs fans showed their true colours on what they would do in the face of homophobia. Some of y'all passed it with flying colours and did exactly what one should do in a situation like this while others showed that continuing to stan a hockey player was more important than social justice. For those in the LGBTQ+ community, all of you are so strong and I know this whole situation was very painful. To allies who stood with those in the LGBTQ+ community, you're exactly what hockey (and the world needs), keep up the good work. To those who went out of their way to defend and minimize the weight of the situation, please re-evaluate yourselves and the kind of messages you're sending to others (especially if you consider yourself an ally)

Concussion Paragraphs
Our understanding of concussions is forcing various leagues to re-think and change their policies towards players injuries.
Sports leagues have changed and added rules about physical contact with their games. The NFL is a league whos sports results in many injuries have added a rule to the game that a player is not allowed to lower their helmet to make contact with another player's helmet, due to these hits causing head injuries. During a game between New England and Houston, a New England player was charged at, receiving a direct blow to his helmet from another player. His shoulders slumped and his legs went limp, sending him to the ground. This player received a concussion. The rule was put into place to penalize and stop these kinds of hits. So now in the NFL if helmet-to-helmet contact is made a player is either given a 15-yard penalty or ejection from the game. This is the NFL's way to make progress when it comes to concussions. Right behind the NFL the college football league NCAA has also added rules that players cannot target the head or neck of opponents. The NCAA wants to take steps to protect their student-athletes more by adding a rule to eject players who target defenceless players above the shoulders. Which means no forcibly hitting a player's head or neck area with the helmet or facemask, or using their hands, arms, or other parts of the body to forcefully hit a player in the head or neck area. This allows many injuries to be prevented and stopped.
Organizations update concussion/injury policies for the safety of players. The NHL is known for its violence and roughness which leads many of its players to injury. To counter this the hockey league has updated his concussion protocol. The NHL has agreed to provide additional support to help identify players who need an evaluation and will require a player to be removed for evaluation if the player shows signs/symptoms after a direct or indirect hit to the head. This is a step in the right direction for the league and the safety of its players. The NFL is still highly working on maker football a safer game for their athletes, so they implemented the concussion game day checklist. When a player receives an impact to the head and shows signs of a concussion, they are put on the sideline and taken through a checklist. If a player passes the sideline survey which includes evaluation of speech, eye movement, and event history then they can return to play. If they do not pass then they are taken to the locker room where the team physician completes a SCAT/neurological exam, if the assessment in normal they may return to play. If not normal then the player must stay in the locker room, receive a periodic evaluation by a medical team, and have a follow-up neurological exam. This makes sure that players are getting their rest and not playing right away after receiving a head injury.

A Few Clues About the Future? Thoughts After Flyers 5, Maple Leafs 4
So, the Flyers won last night, defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs in a shootout 5-4.
It allowed them to officially stave off elimination for at least one more night. Good for them. They didn’t have to bow out of the season in front of the home crowd. They gave the faithful a nice effort against a pretty good team. Good for the Flyers.
However, at this point, they would have to win their last five games, Montreal would have to lose their last five, with at least four of them coming in regulation, and Columbus would have to lose five-of-six with their lone win coming against Montreal tonight and then four of those five losses would have to come in regulation.
Or, if one of those teams doesn’t comply, Carolina would need to lose their last six games, all in regulation.
I know, I know, you know they aren’t going to make the playoffs. I just wanted to throw that out there for the Lloyd Christmases among you who will scream, “So you’re saying there is a chance?”
Additionally, it’s not worth even diving into the breakdown of the game. Here’s all you need to know on that front:
Carter Hart won his first NHL shootout by not allowing a goal.
It was the first shootout all season for Toronto, which seems impossible, but it’s true.
Sean Couturier scored the lone shootout goal. He was 2-for-20 in his career before last night.
Couturier also scored his 32nd goal of the season, a career high.
The other goals for the Flyers were scored by Travis Konecny, Radko Gudas and Ryan Hartman.
That about covers it.
But, there were a few interesting things that occurred in and around the game that I do want to talk about as they will most likely have a greater impact on the team moving forward.
1. Cam Talbot
This certainly wasn’t the most interesting or noteworthy nugget from last night, but it was definitely the first one I noticed. After riding Brian Elliott in lieu of Talbot when Hart was hurt and then also relying on Elliott as the backup for Hart while the team was still in playoff contention, the Flyers dressed Talbot in place of Elliott for the first time against Toronto.
Talbot never saw the ice after warm-ups and did his good backup goalie duty and opened and closed the bench door for players going on and coming off the ice, but I definitely found it subtly interesting that Talbot is backing up Hart now that the Flyers are switching from contending mode to evaluation mode.
With the Flyers in need of a backup goalie for Hart next season, Talbot is more likely to be re-signed than Elliott (both are unrestricted free agents). The Flyers seem to think Elliott is a slightly better goalie than Talbot – as evidenced by him being part of the push for the playoffs while Talbot was often a healthy scratch, but the Flyers value Talbot’s durability more in the future, which is why he’ll likely be re-signed to a new contract before July 1 to be the Flyers backup.
For his part, Elliott has done all he can, except stay healthy. He’s had a significant injury in each of the past two seasons after being pretty durable throughout his career before that. He has come back and played through pain in both seasons and done a fine job.
His perseverance earned him the nomination from the Philadelphia chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association for the NHL’s Bill Masterton Memorial Award given annually to the player in the NHL who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
Each city nominates one player and then a final vote among those 31 players is taken to determine the winner.
Three Flyers have won in the past Bobby Clarke (1972), Tim Kerr (1989) and Ian Laperriere (2011).
Anyway, Elliott is as sure as gone and may have played his last game as a Flyer already as I’m betting it’s Hart and Talbot the rest of the way.
2. Sam Morin
The long-awaited season debut of Flyers defensive prospect/project Sam Morin occurred against Toronto. He dressed for the game – his first NHL action in a year after a crushing knee injury. And even though he only played a short period of time – roughly eight minutes – he didn’t look bad.
A lot of fans want to see Morin as a defensive regular for this team moving forward. After all, the Flyers invested a lot of time and energy – and a high first round pick – on him back in 2013.
Morin, who was selected 11th overall in that draft, was always viewed as a long-term project with high upside, but the Flyers were hoping it wouldn’t take this long. Last night was only his sixth game at the NHL level.
That’s the second-fewest games played in the NHL of any of the first round picks from 2013. In fact, 56 players drafted in rounds 2-through-7 from that year have played more in the NHL than Morin.
Morin will turn 24 this summer and is under contract at a very affordable cap hit ($700,000) for two more seasons, so the Flyers can still be patient, but at some point, there has to be a concern that he just might not be cut out for the NHL game.
I know it’s hard to judge a guy based on six career games in the NHL, and it’s why I think he’ll be given one more shot to make this team as a bottom pair or seventh defenseman next season, but I don’t think there’s a long leash here.
Frankly, knowing the Flyers plan to be very aggressive this summer in changing the roster (more on that later) it wouldn’t surprise me if a rebuilding team would take a shot on Morin and the Flyers move him in a trade.
The Flyers are certainly going to be looking for one defenseman, maybe two, and how GM Chuck Fletcher feels about Morin will certainly play into that offseason plan.
For my money, Morin will never be more than a 6/7 defenseman at the NHL level. If the Flyers want to give him one last chance to prove otherwise, that’s fine, but expectations, at this point, are pretty low.
3. Travis Sanheim and Shayne Gostisbehere
Sanheim actually won the game for the Flyers in overtime with a goal that was waved off when referee Brian Pochmara said he blew the whistle before the puck crossed the goal line.
Um. He didn’t:
#LetsGoFlyers have a goal waived off in OT (Sanheim) because the referee blew the whistle before the puck went in. Regardless of when whistle actually went, all that matters is the 'intent to blow the whistle'. Refs got together after the call to discuss #LeafsForever pic.twitter.com/E7SHizhcsg
— Nathan Kanter (@NathanKanter11) March 28, 2019
This is the old, “intent to blow the whistle” rule which is fine if he puts the whistle to his mouth and blows right away, but as you can see, he had the whistle in place for a couple seconds before actually blowing it. Pochmara blew this one. This should have ended the game.
But, that’s all irrelevant.
The point is, Sanheim had a really good game. This coming on the heels of him telling erstwhile Flyers.com writer and HockeyBuzz Flyers analyst Bill Meltzer in an interview earlier this week that he hasn’t been at his best in the last couple weeks but that he’s a more confident player than he’s been in the past and feels he can recover from it better now than he used to do.
Last night was case in point.
The most interesting development from last night was Sanheim took all of Shayne Gostisbehere’s usual shifts in the overtime 3-on-3.
Ghost didn’t see the ice at all.
Now, Ghost had a terrible game. He had a double turnover scenario which led to a goal for the Maple Leafs and although the first Toronto goal wasn’t really his fault but rather a lack of help from weak-side winger Ryan Hartman, at first glance it looked like Ghost could have done more, but didn’t.
Needless to say, Sanheim being asked to play in a spot where Gostisbehere used to flourish, is something of note.
I asked coach Scott Gordon about it after the game:
“It just worked out with the whistles and delays that [assistant coach Rick Wilson] only went pretty much with two defenseman the whole overtime. So, Provy and Travis and he actually had Phil Myers up a couple times, but he just kept going back to those two guys they were playing well. Travis just has a great ability to get up and down the ice, obviously he’s a skilled defenseman and open ice is for those types of players it’s a great opportunity.”
The most interesting part of that quote to me is that Myers would have been the third defenseman in the rotation. Gostisbehere was nowhere to be found.
I know I took a lot of grief for suggesting right before the trade deadline that the Flyers are ready to move on from Ghost, and I felt that unless they were overwhelmed with a deal at the deadline that it would most likely take place in the offseason.
I now believe that more than ever.
The writing is on the wall. Ghost is definitely fourth in the pecking order here as far as future behind Ivan Provorov, Sanheim and Myers. And it’s no secret that the Flyers want to go get another defenseman in the offseason either by trade or free agency.
Whispers are already starting to leak out that the Flyers might go after Erik Karlsson in free agency. I’m not sure of that fit, although he is a dynamic player when fully healthy, but there are other options on defense.
The Flyers could throw an offer sheet at Winnipeg’s Jacob Trouba as the Jets have a slew of RFA’s and have to decide where they want to spend their money (Patrick Laine is also an RFA, so it could get interesting in the Great White North).
I’ve also heard that the Flyers could try and swing a deal with Minnesota for Jared Spurgeon, who has one year left on his deal. That makes sense because Fletcher knows and likes Spurgeon a ton. Would you swap Ghost for Spurgeon? I would.
Anyway you slice it, the Flyers are going to actively be looking for an upgrade on defense and no matter who that upgrade is, it would push Ghost to a third pair role. Is Ghost the kind of player you want on a third pair? Especially if guys like Sanheim and potentially Karlsson could do the same things as Ghost if not better?
The answer is no.
Sanheim’s emergence has relegated Gostisbehere to the category of expendable – yet still valuable.
It’s really a good position for the Flyers to be in, to be honest.
The Flyers will pursue help at forward too. Probably third line center and a scoring winger. And I’m told they will be aggressive in this area too.
Could Travis Konecny be on the move in a trade? I wouldn’t do it because despite his faults, he brings a certain chutzpah to the team that is lacking elsewhere. But, I’d be lying to you if I said I hadn’t heard his name come up as well.
All told, watching the Flyers over these final five games, while the results might not matter, what happens can certainly provide a few clues as to the direction this team is headed in certain spots for the offseason.

Capped: Valuing Draft Picks in All Rounds
With New Year’s done and gone along with the World Juniors, all we have left are the food comas, some questionable resolutions, and the second half of the NHL season.
This week for the Capped Column, we’re going to tie together the World Juniors, the end of the 2018-2019 NHL season, and a resolution for fantasy owners to look at adopting for this coming year. What does that all have in common with fantasy hockey salary cap leagues? The 2019 draft, and all of our fantasy trading of draft picks.
Let’s preface this by saying that a good majority of salary cap leagues are competitive enough to include some sort of multi-year format. Whether it be a dynasty league with a prospect draft, or a re-draft with varying keeper formats, draft picks play a large portion of the value in these leagues. Often, stocking up draft picks is seen as the only way to accumulate talent. This week, I want to review some general ideas looking at the value of draft picks for fantasy leagues.
The value of draft picks is something that is starting to get beaten to death within the context of the actual NHL draft, while in fantasy hockey, it remains something that varies widely by league settings. One of my favourite articles I read on the subject for NHL draft picks was done by Hockey-Graphs, and can be found here. My biggest takeaway was how fast the expected value drops off, and how much of a crapshoot the later parts of a draft are.
Over the last few years, I have tried different approaches when it comes to draft picks. In some, I have traded up as far as I could, because I am not a scout, and the higher picks are more reliable. In others, I have gone for the scattershot approach, hoarding a quantity picks and hoping something sticks. In one keeper league (keep 11) I ended up with the majority of the third round of picks to fill out the remainder of my roster for the year, while in yet another league I traded away all of my entry-draft picks for immediate upgrades in a year that I was vacationing around draft time.
In a lot of fantasy leagues, draft picks get glorified to the point that almost any player in the league is available for the right number of picks. Especially in dynasty cap leagues, where the young talent coming in on entry-level contracts is what rules the pool, draft picks are seen as the only means to properly rebuild – that is most certainly false. Look at your fantasy leagues and think about how many teams have been rebuilding for the last three or more years by trading anyone decent for draft picks or lesser players just to wind up at the bottom of the standings. This is what we call the Edmonton Oilers approach, as we have seen in the NHL, it isn’t always effective. The bottom line here, is that the path to a successful rebuild shouldn’t be solely through draft picks.
This is going to be a tough exercise trying to encompass every league, but I will try by breaking down picks into the early, middle, and late rounds, going through how the value for each can be evaluated, and can be maximized in any league. This is generally going to be focused on those leagues where the players available to be chosen is a very similar player pool to the NHL draft of that year.
  Early Rounds
The early round picks are your best chance to turn the lottery ticket into a real contributor for your fantasy team. Whether that by a trade, or with the handful of players that make a fantasy impact within a year or two of being drafted. However, in my experience, these picks tend to be overvalued in trades because of what they could turn out to be, and not what they are. Look back at any draft in the last 15 years, and you will see maybe eight to ten players that you would trade a 15th overall pick for in this year’s draft. Does that make sense?
Not really.
Unless it is a top three selection, these players are likely one to four years away, and could turn out to be as good as the top 50 fantasy player you’re trading them for. As we saw in the Hockey-Graphs article linked above, the value of first round picks drops off fast, but oftentimes late first round picks are treated the same as…
  Late Rounds
Unless you are the prospect/depth player guru of your fantasy pool, the late round picks are dart throws, and are usually no better than the free-agent pool anyways. If you can turn these lottery tickets into definite value, then you are likely coming out ahead. That being said, more dart throws you have means you’re more likely to strike gold, so don’t be afraid to make a few of those picks if you don’t receive a good enough return.
These rounds I try my hardest to get thrown in as sweeteners to push deals through. One per season doesn’t make much of a difference, but if you get four or five extra late round picks thrown in, then you can package them together for a juicier middle round pick, or for a prospect that’s farther along in their development.
  Middle Rounds
This is where it all comes together. The middle rounds to some teams are valuable enough to get you a player that you need, while some other teams just need a mediocre prospect to give one away. Take full advantage of the discrepancies in evaluations of draft picks between those in your leagues. By the end of a season, I have shuffled plenty of mid-round picks in and out, which I find is one of the fastest ways to rebuild my depth.
  Future years
In some leagues, picks from future years are fair game to be dealt. In these, I find that a pick from one year should gain you about 20-30 spots when dealt for a pick a year from then. To elaborate, a pick that would net you a player in the 50th overall range of your prospect draft this year would be worth a selection around 30th overall in the next year’s draft. A later pick, in the 80 range, may net you something around the 50th selection a year later. This is based loosely around development time of prospects and how it lengthens the later on into the draft you get.
The bottom line is that draft picks can be used to possibly make your team better for the future, or to more certainly make your team better in the present. I know which way I usually lean.
  ****
If you have any draft pick thoughts, theories, research, or stories you would like to share, I would love to go over them in the comments.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upholds Capitals winger Tom Wilson’s 20-game ban NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upholds Capitals winger Tom Wilson’s 20-game ban https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
NEW YORK — NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has upheld the 20-game suspension of Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson for an illegal check to the head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist during a Sept. 30 pre-season game.
The physical right-winger, who plays on Washington’s top line with captain Alex Ovechkin, drew a 10-minute penalty for the hit before being handed the lengthy ban hours before the Capitals opened their Stanley Cup title defence on Oct. 3 against Boston.

The NHL Players’ Association launched an appeal two days later.
Bettman heard Wilson’s appeal of the original decision at a hearing in New York on Oct. 18, and said in Thursday’s decision that the evidence in the case supports a significant ban.
“Mr. Wilson’s recent play has threatened the safety and well-being of opposing players on too many occasions, despite prior discipline being assessed and despite the considerable efforts of the Department of Player Safety to counsel Mr. Wilson on how to play within the rules,” Bettman concluded in his ruling.
“I hope that this decision will serve as a ‘wake-up call’ to Mr. Wilson, causing him to re-evaluate and make positive changes to his game,” Bettman added.

— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) October 25, 2018
Wilson, considered a repeat offender under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, has been suspended four times in less than 13 months.
His recent ban will cost him nearly a quarter of the 82-game regular season and US$1.26 million in salary.

DETROIT (AP) Evander Kane showed his skill Lions Tracy Walker Jersey , scoring a wraparound goal under the watchful eye of many NHL teams evaluating him in person.Kane had a go-ahead goal late in the second period and Marco Scandella scored with a second left in overtime, lifting the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.About a dozen scouts were at the game checking out Kane as a player to possibly acquire and they had a great view of his 20th goal, which was scored directly in front of them in the press box. Kane told reporters earlier this week he expects to be traded before Monday’s deadline.Article continues below …He was glad the Sabres didn’t scratch him to protect against injury.”I understand the business so I can see why some teams choose to do that, but that’s not what I want,” Kane said. ”I want to be on the ice with my team, no matter what is going to happen. I don’t want to watch.”Some teams already out of the playoff race, including Buffalo and Detroit, are trying to trade players with expiring contracts for draft picks to potentially bolster the future of their franchises.Kane is definitely a candidate to get dealt and perhaps one of the best players available. The 26-year-old forward is expendable at least in part because he’s in the last season of his deal with a rebuilding team led by first-year general manager Jason Botterill. The Sabres have not appeared to express an interest in re-signing Kane http://www.chicagobearsteamonline.com/an…ler-jersey , who could command a lot of money as a free agent in July.Kane, drafted No. 4 overall by Atlanta in 2009, was acquired by Buffalo from Winnipeg in 2015 a few weeks before the trade deadline in a deal that sent a first-round pick that year to the Jets. He has 20 goals this season, ranking second on the team, and 177 in his career.”Talented player,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. ”Real fast.”Blashill was quick to bash the league’s goaltender interference rule, which he said wasn’t properly applied during a challenge of Kane’s goal.”We have a rule as grey as grey can be,” he said. The Red Wings scratched veteran defenseman Mike Green for a fourth straight game with an upper-body injury Giants B.J. NFL Concussions
Activity #3
NFL concussions
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/22226487/nfl-concussions-rise-highest-level-league-began-sharing-data
-2017 season has reported the most amount of concussions diagnosed in NFL players, since 2012 when the league began to take record
-At the end of the 2017 season, there were a total 281 concussions, this included the pre-season, regular season and practices
-Teams recorded a total of 56 concussions during practices, of those 56, 45 occurred during pre-season
-According to an analysis by IQVIA, 28% of concussions that were evaluated during a game were prompted by players reporting their symptoms
-For the first time since 2014, injury rates were higher on Thursday night games than regular season games
http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/news/nfl-concussion-numbers-injury-data-2017-season-acl-mcl/1wqsrumr64psb14td9no3n3bg8
-28% of concussions were self-reported compared to last year, which was 19%
-Several teams have been punished because they didn’t follow the NFL rules which consisted of allowing players to re-enter the game prematurely
-ACL injury numbers are at their lowest since 2014 at 54 diagnosed tears
-MCL data slightly increased, with a number of 147 injuries, compared to the 2016 season
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2018/01/26/nfl-concussions-2017-season-study-history/1070344001/
-The 2017 season is at the highest number of concussions in the past 6 years
-The results increased 15.6% over the five- year average
-NfL’s CMO (cheif medical officer) reported that they will try to get the concussion numbers down by continuing to elaborate and communicate with competition committee of the rules of the game
-50 of the concussions in 2017 were self reported
How are concussions in sports transformative?
Concussions occur many times in the sports industry, it is a common injury experienced mostly in physical contacted sports. Concussions are transformative because it risks players from losing their career. If a player is diagnosed with a concussion, it will change their view on the importance of safety in sports. The CMO (chief medical officer) Dr. Allen Sills, discussed how disappointing the concussion numbers were in the NFL, but is making it a challenge for the industry to continue to work hard to bring those numbers down. He believes he can decrease those numbers in many ways, for example, continuing to elaborate and communicate with competition committees about the rules in the NFL, as it will impact the way the game runs. Concussions can affect players for a long time if it isn’t treated immediately and with care. For example Derek Boogaard, one of the greatest enforcers in NHL history, has experienced many concussions while playing hockey, but left it aside because he thought blacking out and seeing stars were normal when he fought. By leaving this issue aside without treatment, it later became a major problem which lead to death. In fact, several teams in the NFL have been punished for allowing players to enter games, when they are not fully recovered. In my opinion, I believe that punishments for this act is right because being fully recovered is important to the player’s physical and mental health. Players shouldn’t be able to play while they are in the process of recovering because it decreases the risks of getting injured again or making it worse. By keeping a healthy lifestyle, players are able to compete with stronger mentality. I agree with what the CMO and the sports industry have to say about the statistics of concussions. I believe that these numbers should be decreased, and the industry should make an effort to try and change these numbers.

Not as Bad as it Seemed: Takeaways from Avalanche 5, Flyers 2
Flyers Twitter is my favorite place to go when I’m looking for a sports-related laugh.
During and following the team’s 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche Saturday night, the social media platform was ablaze with the same old complaints about the team – bad coaching, turnovers, questioning Andrew MacDonald’s existence, etc.
It was a far cry from the abject elation that was emanating from Twitter following a solid 5-2 win in Vegas on opening night Thursday.
On that night, the Flyers were going to be a chic pick to go far in the playoffs, their depth was being praised, the growth of their young talent was being praised, and all was right with the world.
The difference between winning and losing certainly brings out the extremes in the schizophrenic world of Philadelphia hockey.
I’m about to make it a little more confusing for you:
The Flyers actually played a really good game against the Avalanche, and at times, were actually better than they were against Vegas.
Yeah, their mistakes were more magnified because they either resulted in goals against or incredibly high percentage chances that Brian Elliott was forced to be superhuman and keep out of the net, but the Flyers really had good flow. They skated with a very fast Colorado team. The Flyers breakouts were mostly good. Their 5-on-5 play was really good after an uneven first period. The No. 1 power play didn’t score, but it looked really good. The penalty kill was OK – the Avs didn’t score on the power play until the final four minutes of the game, so the Flyers did a good job of disrupting their set. However I felt Colorado was allowed to set up too easily, which means the Flyers weren’t great killing through the neutral zone.
And Elliott was superb again.
So, things weren’t that bad and we have a few things to talk about, but, for the most part, it’s football Sunday, so I know your attention will be elsewhere, so I’ll try to keep this short:
1. JVR injury
If you are looking for something to actually worry about, there is cause for concern here. I wouldn’t be overly-worried, I mean, it’s the second game of the season and JVR did try to test the injury out after it happened, meaning it wasn’t crushing pain, but this didn’t look great:
James van Riemsdyk left tonight's game with a lower-body injury after this play. pic.twitter.com/yvgGB7lrYB
— Sons of Penn (@SonsofPenn) October 7, 2018
It looked like he took a clearing attempt off the inside of his right knee. That’s not comfortable for sure, but it’s also unlikely to be a real long-term injury. Still, he’s going to be evaluated by team doctors back in Philly, which may be later today, could be tomorrow. Either way, he’s questionable at this point for the home opener Tuesday.
Dave Hakstol did a nice job rolling his lines after JVR went out of the game. He mixed and matched and double-shifted guys who were playing well, so he did a fine job there, and the Flyers seemed to be going ahead without missing a beat. Granted, they had a few long shifts, something you never want in any game, but especially not in Denver’s thin, mile-high air, but on the whole, the Flyers adapted to the loss of JVR well.
2. Goalie Interference?
Trying to be the NFL, the NHL likes the fact that it has a rule that is so ambiguous that no one knows when it should or shouldn’t be applied. In the NHL it’s the goalie interference rule. When is a goalie impeded from making a save?
There was a big debate on this one last night:
GABRIEL LANDESKOG TIPS HOME MACKINNON'S SHOT TO GIVE THE AVS THE LEAD!#GoAvsGo pic.twitter.com/9AIRj6G47r
— NHL Daily 365 (@NHLDaily365) October 7, 2018
Landeskog did skate into the crease area on his own. Travis Sanheim, not doing a great job in front, kind of held Landeskog there, preventing him from getting out of the way. Elliott’s stick was impeded on the play, but would it have made a difference? The re-direction by Landeskog changes everything.
In my opinion, from the perspective of the sport of hockey that should be a goal, and it should be allowed at all times, however, by the rule book, it may have actually been interference.
And clearly, Hakstol thought so….
"Why would I fucking challenge goalie interference then?" pic.twitter.com/JWQk8GKgC1
— Sons of Penn (@SonsofPenn) October 7, 2018
His annoyance only built from there:
Mood. pic.twitter.com/bMpWY8sneR
— Sons of Penn (@SonsofPenn) October 7, 2018
I get it. When the rule is so unclear, it’s easy to get this mad. It also was the difference-making goal, so if the call goes the other way, maybe the outcome is different.
However I get a feeling, this won’t be the last time this happens.
3. Moose
Elliott has allowed six goals in two games and only stopped 53 of 59 shots faced for a save percentage of .898.
Statistically, that’s not very good.
But screw the stats man, Elliott has been the Flyers best player through two games, and it’s not even close.
He made more 10-bell saves against Colorado than I’ve seen a goalie make in one game in a long time:
Elliott with three saves to keep it a one-goal game! pic.twitter.com/NOFNblRm3U
— Sons of Penn (@SonsofPenn) October 7, 2018
Again, this is just one set. He had a stop on a 2-on-none. He was square to the shooter all night. He stoned Nathan McKinnon on at least four occasions. The guy has been really, really good. The Flyers need to be better defensively in front of him. Plain and simple.
4. Folin’s Folly
This kind of coaching decision is the kind that drives me crazy. I didn’t think Radko Gudas had a great game in the opener, but he wasn’t terrible either. So, why replace him? And why give Folin a game when he showed you absolutely nothing of value in the preseason. He was frankly so bad, I thought there was a chance he didn’t make the team.
And then Saturday happened. He was on the ice for Colorado’s first goal and was left alone in front to try to stop an odd-man chance – and failed.
He turned the puck over on a blind pass that led to another goal. A third mistake led to a penalty.
Frankly, the guy was dreadful.
It wasn’t the reason the Flyers lost, but it contributed to it. Hakstol shouldn’t tinker for no reason. This was a no reason tinker, and it failed, miserably.
5. Laugher of a goal
I’ll wrap it up with this, because I know you have fantasy lineups and bets to get in, but Misha Vorobyev’s first NHL goal was… well.. a thing:
Mikhail Vorobyev's first NHL goal is an absolute thing of beauty. 10/10. pic.twitter.com/FehJc2JTJg
— Sons of Penn (@SonsofPenn) October 7, 2018
There aren’t many hysterical goals in hockey, but this is as laughable as it gets. This is butt fumble bad on the Avalanche. Speaking of butt fumbles… let’s get to football Sunday. See you at the home opener.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says it's 'hard to envision' the league returning to the Olympics
Minas Panagiotakis/Getty
The NHL decided in April that it would not send players to the 2018 Olympics.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said teams became skeptical of interrupting the NHL season when the IOC would not treat the NHL like a sponsor.
Bettman said it's "hard to envision" the league returning to the Olympics in the future.
NHL players are not taking part in the 2018 Olympics after the league decided it did not want to interrupt the season to have players return to their home nations to compete.
While the decision was unpopular among players, Bettman only further doubled-down on his stance while speaking at the PrimeTime Sports Management Conference in Toronto on Monday.
When asked if the NHL has any regrets about its decision regarding the Olympics, Bettman said "none at all."
The NHL wanted to be featured as a sponsor of the Olympics, but the IOC turned them down. Without payment from the Olympics, Bettman explained how teams began re-thinking their involvement in the games.
"There were a handful of clubs that said, 'Oh, Olympics. Great!' There were a handful of clubs, a bigger handful, that said, 'This is really too disruptive.' Then the group in the middle said, 'ehh,'" Bettman said on Monday. "Then when the IOC took the position that they didn't want to pay the expenses, the reaction from all the teams was, 'Wait, we need to re-evaluate this.' If they don't value our participation, why are we disrupting our season?'"
Bettman said he wouldn't rule out future involvement, but said it's "hard to envision a scenario where it makes sense."
Bettman also said about the league's lack of exposure in the Olympics: "This came down to exposure and being able to promote the fact that we're there. Sidney Crosby's goal in Vancouver [in the 2010 Olympics] — we're not allowed to use that footage. Think about that."
As Scott Stintson of The National Post wrote, some have been critical of the league's decision. The NHL has sent teams to Sweden and China for games in an effort to expand and promote the league — many think the Olympics would provide the same benefit. The NHL was reportedly interested in attending the 2022 Olympics in Beijing when they were negotiating with the IOC, but Bettman made it sound like that door has closed.
"[IOC President] Thomas Bach said if you don't go to Korea, you can't come to Beijing. Well, OK. Thank you."
Bettman did say the league would consider attending the Olympics if it came back to North America, saying it's a "different equation."

Injury Ward: Updates on Trouba, Stone, Matthews, Laine, Kuznetsov, and More – March 21
I know many of us are focusing on our playoff matchups this week, so I’ll try and get straight to the point! If you don’t see a certain player below, there probably haven’t been any major developments in their progress. Once there is a significant update, I’ll be sure to have it for you on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza!
The Big Guns (>75% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Patrik Laine – Left Tuesday’s game after blocking a shot, but according to coach Paul Maurice, the injury doesn’t appear to be anything long-term. Winnipeg’s next game is on Friday against the Ducks, Laine’s presence or absence in the lineup will help us make more judgements regarding the true severity of the injury. If you want to see any further update between now and then, follow me on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza.
  <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JRx_kXsCLJA" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Evgeny Kuznetsov – Has been skating on his own and is expected to travel with the team as they begin a three-game road trip (March 22st to March 26th).
Marc-Andre Fleury – Left Tuesday’s game against the Canucks but doesn’t appear to be anything serious. Teammate Jonathan Marchessault said it was precautionary from what he had heard.
Patrice Bergeron – His status has been upgraded to day-to-day now that he’s started practicing. While he definitely won’t be in the lineup Wednesday when the Bruins face the Blues, he hasn’t yet been ruled out for Friday’s contest against the Stars.
Seth Jones – Is travelling with the team so it’s possible he faces the Panthers on Thursday or the Blues on Saturday. However, we’re talking about a franchise defenseman who is going to play an important role if Columbus makes the playoffs. The team is on a nine-game winning streak which includes three wins without Jones, so he’ll be given a chance to fully recover.
Mark Stone – Tried to skate Sunday but that didn’t go well, so don’t expect him to be back very soon. He hasn’t been shut down for the season, but I don’t see him having much more impact on fantasy leagues for the rest of the 2017-2018 campaign.
Vladimir Tarasenko – Didn’t practice on Tuesday, so it’s unlikely he faces the Bruins on Wednesday. You’re going to want Tarasenko in your lineup when he’s healthy, so follow me on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza to find out when he’ll be back.
Carey Price – Will start against the Penguins on Wednesday. As a Habs fan, I understand the psychological aspect behind this decision because Carey wants a chance to end the season on a positive note. On the other hand, if he gets injured in these last few meaningless games of the season… What do you think about Price not being shut down for the rest of the season?
Auston Matthews – Will travel with the team as they face the Predators on Thursday. From what I’ve read, he’s super close to returning. He has been skating consistently and even participating in practice. If I had to compare his progress to a loading bar, it would be 96% loaded. My not so bold prediction: he returns within the next two games.
The Second Liners (40%-75% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Jacob Trouba – Concussion. Out indefinitely. One-year league? Drop.
Ben Bishop – Reinjured left knee, timeline will be out Thursday. If you haven’t noticed, this article comes out on a Wednesday. If I ever figure out time travel, I’ll make sure to come back and tell you all how much time Bishop is going to miss. In case that doesn’t work out, you can always follow me on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza to see the aforementioned timetable.
Rick Nash – Felt fine after taking a hit against the Lightning (March 17th), but was a late scratch on Monday because he wasn’t feeling great before during the pregame skate. He’s officially listed as out with an upper-body injury and hasn’t been ruled out for future games yet. The fact that he was feeling well enough to play until the last minute makes me believe the injury isn’t too serious. One of those that you play through if it’s the playoffs, you know? Speaking of the playoffs, the Bruins are going to want a healthy Nash for postseason hockey, so don’t be surprised if they sit him for a few more games to avoid worsening the injury.
Kevin Shattenkirk – Has resumed skating after a setback in his recovery. From what I’ve witnessed in the past, a player usually participates in a full practice before returning to game action. I just don’t see that happening quickly enough for Shattenkirk to have any more impact in one-year leagues.
Robin Lehner – “Out day-to-day for maintenance”. What does that mean? Your guess is as good as mine. No time for speculation during the fantasy playoffs!
Matthew Tkachuk – Last we heard, Tkachuk was ruled out for the team’s two-game road trip against the Golden Knights and Coyotes. Well, those games have come and gone and we’re waiting for another update. The fact that he was only ruled out for that road trip and not a longer period of time makes me think this is a situation they are monitoring often, and that Tkachuk will be back soon.
Carter Hutton – MRI results didn’t reveal any serious issued so he’s officially “day-to-day”. Whenever he feels better he’ll be back on the ice. Goalies usually need a few on-ice sessions on the ice before returning from an injury, so I wouldn’t expect him back very soon.
Reilly Smith – Still no word on whether he’ll travel with the team as they visit San Jose on Thursday and Colorado on Saturday. I get the feeling NHL teams don’t care about our fantasy playoff matchups…
The Depth Guys (10%-40% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Thomas Greiss – No timetable for his return from a lower-body injury. Yahoo! That was sarcasm by the way, not the website you use for your fantasy hockey league. Ba dum tss.
Oscar Klefbom – Will miss the rest of the season as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Apparently, this issue has been bothering him for several years. Now that it’s take care of, can we expect more from him in the future?
Zdeno Chara – An upper-body injury will keep him out of Wednesday’s game against the Blues. His status after that is still up in the air. He recently turned 41, might not be a bad idea to give him a few days of rest as the Bruins prepare for playoff hockey.
Josh Manson – Day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He will travel with the team as they embark on a four-game road trip from March 21st to March 27th.
Jake DeBrusk – No timetable on his recovery from an upper-body injury. Is this a case of rest for playoffs or reveal nothing about the injury so playoff opponents can’t use it to their advantage? You tell me.
Noah Hanifin – Concussion. Out indefinitely. One-year league? Drop.
Alex Galchenyuk – Suffered a hand injury in Tuesday’s skate, and will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
T.J. Brodie – Left Sunday’s game with an upper-body injury that also caused him to miss Monday’s game against the Coyotes. He suffered the injury on this hit from Ryan Reaves, but the team hasn’t yet issued an update.
Jonathan Bernier – Could return this week after missing 14 games due to head injuries. It will probably be in a backup role with how well Semyon Varlamov is playing.
Jared Spurgeon – Out at least four weeks with a hamstring tear. One-year league? Drop!
The Mr. Irrelevants (<10% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Anthony Duclair – Not close to skating yet.
Carl Soderberg – An illness caused him to miss Tuesday’s game, I wouldn’t expect him to miss more action because of it.
Jason Spezza – Has a back issue and we don’t yet know when he’ll be back.
Calle Jarnkrok – Out rest of season with an upper-body injury.
