Breeding blankets for fusion reactors

So, barring a few ambitious projects involving helium-3, fusion reactor power plants will use hydrogen isotopes as fuel: a 50/50 mixture of deuterium (hydrogen-2) and tritium (hydrogen-3). Deuterium is very stable and relatively abundant, as far as these things go, and can be extracted from ordinary seawater.  Tritium, however, has a half life of just over 12 years, so it doesn't occur in nature.

Fortunately, you can use your fusion reactor to synthesize its own tritium fuel, via the transmutation of lithium-6. You use the powerful neutron flux from the fusion plasma to “breed” tritium in lithium, extract it, then feed it back into the reactor. The figure of merit for this process is the tritium breeding ratio (TBR), which is simply the ratio of tritium bred to tritium used. The goal is to get a TBR substantially greater than 1.

Generally speaking, most concepts for tritium breeding involve wrapping a lithium “breeding blanket” around the outside of the reactor, with as few gaps as you can manage. A deuterium-tritium reactor is constantly generating fast neutrons. You want to keep as much of that emission as possible inside the breeding blanket, for both tritium and power generation.

There are a few different ideas for breeding blanket designs, several of which are going to be tested on ITER, the massive reactor being built in France. One concept is a thick sheath of lithium ceramic that surrounds the vessel, either as solid slabs or pebbles.  As tritium breeding occurs under the blanket, water or liquid helium is circulated through it, cooling the lithium and potentially extracting heat for electricity generation.

While such a blanket might be relatively “simple” (lol) to build, there are some pretty fundamental challenges. Neutrons will penetrate most materials with ease, and it might be tricky to extract tritium that's been bred deep inside of solid lithium.  Ideally, you could do the extraction without pause, even as breeding is ongoing. For some designs, though, you have to cycle out breeder units for harvesting as they get a full load of tritium.

Another concept is “liquid breeding." This concept uses a molten mixture of metallic lithium and lead, or a lithium salt compound like FLiBe (fluorine-lithium-beryllium). The liquid would be pumped through a “breeding zone” around the vessel, where the neutron flux is thickest. The tritium will then be continuously extracted from the breeding fluid as it flows back out.  As part of the process, you can run the hot liquid through a heat exchanger, heating water to power a steam turbine. 

Liquid breeding does raise some prominent engineering challenges. Hot, molten breeding fluid will be very hard to handle – not just because of the heat, but also because you're trying to pump a massive quantity of viscous fluid into a very tight breeding zone. Moreover, molten lithium-lead might react explosively with air. If your breeding system springs a leak, you’ll have a serious mess on your hands!

It’s still unclear which of these breeding strategies will bear fruit. From conception to implementation, there are still a lot of unknowns!  Both liquid and solid breeding will be conducted in France, and a number of private fusion companies have plans to breed tritium in their machines as well.

"Wild Blue Yonder" dealt with some of the emotional fallout of the Flux, so I want to rewind a bit and look at what that means for the Doctor.

I know that the Timeless Child and the Flux are contentious topics. I'm not here to argue either way. But now those storylines have decisively not been retconned, and with both of these fresh in my memory, I feel the need to offer some context for anyone who may not have seen it, and to recontextualize it for myself and anyone who has.

NotDonna: You don't know where you're from. The Doctor: How do you know that? How does anyone know? How does Donna know?

In "The Timeless Children", we find out that the Doctor was discovered as a child alone under a wormhole, and adopted by a woman named Tecteun. There was an accident where the Doctor fell from a cliff and regenerated, and subsequently Tecteun performed "experiments" on them to try to understand regeneration. The show minces words about this but she killed a child a whole bunch of times is what happened. Her experiments created the Time Lords and allow them to engineer their regeneration properties. The Doctor has no memory of any of this, and only finds out via the Master and information stored in the Time Lord Matrix.

The Doctor, predictably, doesn't tell anyone about this revelation. She makes a speech to the Master about how this makes her more, we get a single shot of her looking a bit tired in the TARDIS, then she immediately gets thrown in prison.

Ultimately, the Doctor doesn't know where they're from or who their parents are. And the very fact that they're not from Gallifrey is information that no one in the universe should have. Everyone who knew is now dead.

NotDonna: I saw it in your head. The Flux. The Doctor: It destroyed half the universe because of me. We stand here now, on the edge of creation, a creation which I devastated, so yes I keep running, of course I do! How am I supposed to look back on that? NotDonna: It wasn't your fault! A fun fact about the Flux is that the Doctor did not cause it. So why does he blame himself? Because the person who caused the Flux was Tecteun.

The reason why Tecteun wanted to destroy the universe is because the Doctor interfered with things too much. Too much morality. Too inspirational to people. She calls them a virus. So her solution to the problem of the Doctor is to destroy the universe, with the Doctor inside, and take her ship to a different universe to start fresh. She also was the one to steal all the Doctor's memories of previous lives in the first place. She's dismissive and patronizing and clearly does not care about the Doctor on an emotional level at all. Tecteun is a piece of work, and the implications of her actions and how they've shaped the Doctor have the potential to go deep.

Thirteen doesn't get too much of a chance to react to any of this, because there is plot going on. And shortly after they reunite, Tecteun gets killed by a different villain. So there was no emotional closure in the moment, and there's now no possibility for the Doctor to make sense of her actions. The Doctor does not tell any of her friends about any of these events. She keeps promising to tell Yaz but does not.

"Wild Blue Yonder" is the first time we, as the audience, hear the Doctor discuss the Flux. And their perception of events is skewed at best. The Flux wasn't caused because the Doctor made a mistake and a lot of people were killed, which is what you can argue for many other situations. The Flux and the devastation of the universe was caused by their mother, who promptly turned around and told them it was their fault for being such an interfering nuisance. We know that the Doctor is often an unreliable narrator, but this is beyond that. These are the words of an abused child who has internalized the narrative that the abuse was their fault.

So the Doctor being able to talk about this with Donna, who has seen what happened, who knows him, and tells him that it's not his fault — it means so much to him. He wants it to be her so badly. And then NotDonna laughs in his face. You can see the devastation. He thinks for one moment that he can finally talk about this with his best friend, and it's snatched away from him. He gives himself a moment to break down in the corridor, and then you can see the walls rebuilding as he suppresses it all again.

At the very end of the episode, back in the TARDIS, he's trying very very hard to be nonchalant. I'm curious. The NotDonna could remember all these things that happened to me while we were apart. Can you? Just wondering. Things happened, but I'll be fine. In a million years. It's not a joke.

He wants so badly to be able to talk about this. You can see it in all the lines of his body language. He's keeping himself together but is prepared to fall apart in an instant. He doesn't want to actually tell anyone, but if Donna just magically knew already, and could tell him it wasn't his fault — well, that would make the world of difference. But she doesn't know, and he can't bring himself to tell her. And so the cycle continues.

I've been saying (to negative response) that I actually agree the Master as a character needs a break, not because they've been "overused", only because the dynamic has become so wound up and, what's worse, linear, that it does badly need a cool down period if there's anything to work with.

Except, that was when it looked like they're going for a soft reboot and a fresh start with Fifteen (which, in some ways, they did go for). But one point is made very clearly: Fifteen is bloody pissed about Gallifrey. A case which wasn't really made before, Thirteen was sure busier comforting herself with a story of an abused orphan turning out to be a super special celebrity hero from super awesome family and then pointlessly taunting the Master while standing under a laser he controlled, and Fourteen seemed more hung up on the flux.

From this perspective, the lashing out at. a very convoluted mass murder idea that is not actually terrorism or armed resistance, like it's not "do ends justify the means?" issue only "it's evil AND fucking stupid" but! we sprinkled it with postcolonial discourse so it looks deeper and directly pointing to the Gallifrey situation (which. has. all. the. above. problems) does come off to me as a "this issue will be followed up on".

If there's one thing the Rani's return shows it is that the Doctor was plain wrong about the idea that the destruction went through all of time and space, which we all kind of anticipated, but that begs the question of why this idea was introduced in the first place? Fifteen could have refused Ruby's offer of trying to find Susan with good old own timeline crossing and that would be it?

And to finish, I can't wait to find out how in the Rani is about the whole business, does she already know and will just be like "whatever", is her plan actually about bringing Gallifrey back, or is she going to just react with "What, that idiot managed to wipe out a civilization?!". Definitely something to look forward to.

that post was Never tagged escaflowne! i was Not inviting the fandom to it! to my knowledge i've had 2 disagreements within the fandom, both on discord. one was a miscommunication and the other a difference of opinion that i don't think was handled well by the group. i have zero interest in delving back into it. on tumblr i once reblogged a post whose points i disagreed with, adding a couple alternatives. i was told that this was a fine and normal thing to do.

"the word of truth." i don't think so. to react this way to a sincere expression of both gratitude and, to a lesser extent, hurt, is crazy. do you think i expect people to congratulate me for... posts? or that i'm not ELATED when someone understands where i'm coming from? or that i don't get hurt by ignorance and intentionally inflammatory remarks? the standards you hold me to are only that: yours. so please do not feel spurred to comment just because i mention Escaflowne. permission to ignore me and rest assured that i won't randomly show up in your mentions. or would that be preferable?

if there's some rule from long ago that i should know about: i don't. not everyone knows everyone and not everything is an invitation.

edit a friend pointed out that this fandom doesn't get the constant churn of new people unlike bigger ones. there's not the constant flux of newer/younger people coming in with newer/younger ideas and changing the state of the scene that way.

There is something to be said about the way Betty is resistant to Simon's change.

We go back to the fact that she left on the first night of his transformation - she doesn't see the ways an apocalypse, fatherhood under extreme duress, and a prolonged battle with the Crown inevitably changes Simon

Betty does not witness all of that, and only sees the end result of Ice King. Who she hates. And I think that's also partially attributed to the way Simon is elevated in her mind. Her Simon could never be this pathetic creature. Her Simon was a goddamn gift to existence. Her Simon was friendly and kind and easily laughs away his troubles - not constantly weeping, and acting out.

But of course, the reason Ice King was so pathetic isn't because of the Crown. Ice King was pathetic because he was Simon. Ice Thing got married with ease. Winter King created a whole new world. The parts of Simon that allowed him to be kind is also the parts of himself that caused his deep sadness.

Would Betty have been ready to take care of a deeply traumatized man who would not be able to attend to her emotional needs? (Even less so than he had been before the war, where his only obstacle was a lack of confidence?)

I think Temple of Mars actually had a really good metaphor for this. Betty finds an erroneous equation. Betty starts to solve it (find a cure for Simon) because she fully expects the base equation (Simon) to remain static. But then Finn very rightly points out that the Ice Thing (the Crown) is changing the base equation (Simon).

Betty's little revelatory: "He's changing. Oh no."

If the equation is a living equation - not inert (as Simon used to be) but now in motion, who could say what the answer is anymore. Someone who approaches this equation and expects a simple answer would likely be distressed to find an answer in flux, especially if they were depending on that answer as a source of stability for the major changes that happened in their lives.

1+1 must always equal 2, but the 1 got changed to a 4, it's actually multiplication now, letters are introduced, for a given value modified in some way equals the answer - that's the equation now solve it.

The story doesn't end there of course. Because Betty irrevocably changes herself and now we get to see if Simon reacts any better to her changes. Because he is also putting her on a pedestal. He seeks her out as a way to stabilize himself as an outsider in a new world. But she's new too - new to him especially.

She's changing. So?

Now what.
