something i just realized! (small analysis)
(PROLLY not the first one to figure this out, but here my thoughts goo!)
Soo, we all know about the Turbo flashback we were shown in the first movie. Growing envious and jealous of the spotlight being stolen by that new RoadBlasters rolling in, Turbo goes turbo with the mission to TAKE over the new game, yadda yadda, he fails and skids the HELL outta there. But my big brain noticed something.
1- In comparison to the scene where Ralph and the other villains from Bad-Anon rode the carts from Pac-Man to GCS, the speed Turbo seemingly travelled at is ridiculiously fast!
Considering we see him sitting in his red kart before, this can only mean one thing. Turbo RACED HIS WAY THERE, literally! Even the carts of respective games go faster than the speed he went at, and no normal character such as short stack can run that fast (no, not counting Sonic). Hot shot was desperate for attention that badly.

2- It bugged me how there wasn't the notion of anybody trying to stop Speedy in his tracks. What about the Turbo Twins, didn't they get wind of Turbo's plans and attempt to hinder him? What about the Surge Protector, or ANYONE else in that manner?! Then, moment of clarity hit me.
It was opening hours when the RoadBlasters Incident had occured. This means that AT THE TIME, the Game Central Station was near to empty, spare the Surge Protector roaming around. Now keep in mind the "opening hours" thought, I'll get to that in a bit.

Basically, when Turbo maneuvered his kart shooting out of TurboTime STRAIGHT into RoadBlasters, no one stood in his way and in this short span of time, the Surge Protector wouldn't have been able to block him.

Poor man probably saw something red and white whoosh past his vision and not comprehend what was about to happen. Whoopsie to him I guess.
3- How Turbo escaped honestly had me on a chokehold here. Since the movie showed us the following three scenes after each other directly, I assumed it happened in the same moment RoadBlasters got busted.

But wait, this was Felix explaining to Calhoun/the audience the important chunks of Turbo's story, which means he left out anything that wasn't necessary for us to know! And because two workers (who didn't seem to be employees of Litwak) were rolling out the two cabinets, some time had passed for them to get there, which further then implies that TurboTime and RoadBlasters had to be unplugged sometime later on the same DAY.
What we see in the real world VS. what we see in the game world of an arcade game varies drastically. Although the screen of RoadBlasters was displaying a glitchy killscreen, we don't see what happens to Turbo and the RB racer exactly. Seeing the chaos he had inflicted upon RoadBlasters and the main character of it, Turbo would've abandoned his vehicle behind and scrambled to the exit, realizing there were no means of fulfilling his plan anymore. All that mattered to him was getting to safety under the wire to seek shelter elsewhere. Staying in RoadBlasters would've resulted in him getting unplugged along with the game. Going BACK to TurboTime was a (death sentence) confrontation with the Turbo Twins, escaping to ANY other arcade game would've arisen suspicion both to players AND to game characters. Turbo didn't have that many options.

What happened in the meantime on the outside, you may ask? Here's where we tread a bit into theory territory:
Remember that RoadBlasters was a FAIRLY new game that just came into the arcade. Litwak wouldn't have tossed it out as quickly as we'd seen it!
I believe he took the time to get the game's systems checked by a professional, see if it was just a minor memory problem or a tweak to be done on the system and then get it back working. However, due to the fact that Turbo jumbled up the game's code altogether when colliding with the RoadBlaster racer, repair seemed beyond reach after tinkering on RoadBlasters for so long. You can only do so much after hope dies for your new game.
As for TurboTime, I can imagine it this way. The kids who were playing RoadBlasters definitely told Litwak about the odd Turbo sprite dashing across the horizon before RoadBlasters crashed into oblivion. The second arcade cabinet was most likely inspected as well for any "issues" and truth be told, that cocky racer with that golden trophy was just not showing up no matter how many fixes you did.

The Turbo Twins? Oh, they had to endure the consequences. Had to hear Litwak being reality-checked by the technician that for all the popularity TurboTime had garnered over the years, the game had to go into retirement. Merely forced to stand in the black background, well-aware of the fact that they'd go down with TurboTime, without seeing Turbo's face one last time ever AGAIN. Tragedy, I know.

Now now, I DID say to keep in mind the opening hours aspect just earlier. Here it comes into fruition!!
4- Now, while we have gotten some explanation of how Turbo stayed in hiding for nearly ten years, it's not really clear how he managed to do that during all this time when video game characters were crowding GCS left and right after the incident.
As established in the movie/in this post, all characters of their respective games normally head to their game portals when the arcade is about to open. No bit was strolling to hit the rounds, you see. Everyone was occupied with their own game.
Though, the RoadBlasters incident was surely not a day anybody would forget anytime soon. Neighboring cabinets would've witnessed the horrors of RB unfolding between their eyes, the fleeting voice lines of "Turbo-tastic!" ringing in their ears a second too long. But even then, even WHEN everybody saw Turbo's deeds, how could somebody stop him? How could ANYONE in that matter step out and do the right thing? What if somebody had noticed a character missing from their title screen too? What if something went wrong?

What (presumably at the time) was Turbo's DEATH was no demise any other character wanted to go through. So, they had to stick to their programming. Act as if they were blissfully unaware of the falls of two beloved games in the arcade. Keep up the facade that somehow, everything was fine.

And so, with nobody knowing that hot shot was on the run, Turbo took the run for it. Dashing past the unaware Surge Protector, staggering left and right, he escaped into the bowels of GCS where nobody would find him. At least, until he came up with a new plan. A SOLID plan. One that would make up for the loss of a failure he took part in.
By the time the Surge Protector had partially pieced together the events at closing hours, it was far too late. The criminal was already gone, no trace left behind. Alas, the term "going Turbo" was coined, the act of game-hopping to a foreign game to your own in order to jeopardize and take control over it.
Once the new and flashy racing game Sugar Rush was plugged in, this gave the hiding ex-racer a chance for a comeback, albeit under a different name. With the arcade about to open, Turbo made his way to the new game portal, determined to get he what he had wanted back all this time..

AC/DC is a VERY smart song, one of the reasons it’s my favorite lyrically in the show is that it’s so explicitly about electric trains and has multiple references to super interesting issues/traits with them. This doesn’t go into the broader electricity puns (which are shockingly versatile), just the ones most relevant to trains
“Feel my magnetism”
I’m still trying to figure out if this is an issue with remotely modern electric trains and motors, but I have heard a claim about a turn of the century New York Central S-motor (one of the very first mass produced electric locomotives!) basically “picking up and stealing” some tools left near the track this way and then dropping them when switched off.  Basically the whole “pulling in things with magnetism” has at least some real life precedent with trains.  
“AC/DC it’s okay by me/ I can switch and change my frequency”
This was perhaps the defining feature of the CC 40100 Electra’s helmet was based on.  Due to inconsistent electrification systems (due to early 20th century tech limits) it’s very common to have 2,3, even 4 voltage locomotives and EMUs since it’s cheaper and easier than replacing all that infrastructure.  Having both AC and DC compatibility is actually super old, the New Haven Railroad had one of the first AC-powered lines ever and the very first AC locomotives there had to be equipped for both it and the existing DC third rail in other sections.  But being able to run on multiple AC frequencies is much more recent, and the CC 40100 was an early example of it.  The Northeast Corridor in the US actually requires trains capable of running on THREE different AC voltages/frequencies, being able to “change your frequency” is an important requirement there (and in continental Europe)  
Basically, silly 70s-80s era bi allusions are just how electric trains are.  It’s so out there but so on the nose.  It’s probably the single smartest writing decision of the show because it works so well and talking train media otherwise NEVER talks about these aspects of electrification.  
“I can shock you, I can set you on fire”
The history of diesel and electric trains involves so, so much spontaneous combustion.  Exploding is almost exclusively a steam engine thing, but if they wanted to dramatically kill Electra or Greaseball or any of the Nationals, this is always an option and weirdly underused.  
“I can reach up and pluck down the lightning/watch the conductor, see the live wire”
Direct reference to overhead electrification and how pantographs are raised to make contact.   Also fun play on train conductor/electrical conductor, which is popular in trolley/train jokes.  This system is something almost exclusive to trains and part of why they are so established, efficient, widespread and convenient as electric vehicles.  They’re genuinely absurdly OP vs basically all other forms of traction since they don’t have to carry their own fuel/power supply and can have ridiculously high single-unit power since the only limit is how much capacity the power grid has (and how much can be practically used without wheelslip).  Due to their fixed paths they can run this way vs needing batteries and totally bypass the decades of density limits those had.  Even today batteries are not really practical as a main power source for anything bigger than commuter EMUs and switchers.  
(Trolleybuses are a thing and there’s been attempts at sticking pantographs on trucks… and I guess bumper cars technically count too lol) 
Shoutout to Stexico for having a very different chorus with somehow the exact same sentiment. 
“Macho/Hembra es mi conector” (Male/Female is my connector)
This is just a hilariously matter of fact statement about the electrical connections on AAR standard passenger engines and coaches, which I think Mexico uses since their rail system is so US-based but I could be wrong (privatization axed basically all their passenger services around the time Stexico came out and there’s very little even today).  The stuff about “with my switch I connect you” is also incredibly matter of fact because there’s usually a separate switch or dial to turn on head end power on locomotives.  
Electra is based on this very 70s bi stereotype/trope that lumps in the botanical definition of “bisexual” and makes characters “both male and female” in a way that’s inconsistently trans, GNC, and/or literally being 50/50 both in a way that doesn’t work that way in humans.  Velvet von Ragnar from Never Too Young to Die is almost IDENTICAL in this regard as another example.  But the hilarious thing is that it’s just… incredibly matter of fact and literal when applied to electric trains because so many of them are able to run on both AC and DC power because rail electrification is so messy and many of them are technically “both male and female” going off electrical connections.
Anyways, tangent aside
I do not know enough German to appreciate the intricacies of stuff like word choice or idioms in the translated lyrics but these ones are fun because they’re explicitly about overhead wires
“Steh unter Spannung”
I’ve seen the translation given as “I’m a live wire” but the more literal one seems to be “stand under tension/power/voltage”. “Tension” is often used in place of “voltage” especially outside of English, but there’s a fun double meaning with trains specifically. The allusion to voltage/power in overhead wire is obvious, but  literal catenary wire tension is also SO important specifically in rail electrification.  The wire has to be tight and straight enough to make proper contact with the pantograph (and getting the upwards pressure on those is also important).  Europe has mostly reasonably modern lines with adjustable weights to keep wire tension constant but the northeast US has HUGE issues with outdated systems with fixed wires that sag in the heat (then get snagged on pantographs and torn down) or snap in the cold when they shrink/expand.
“Ein Griff von mir” (A grip of mine)
“Holt den Blitz aus der Leitung,” (Takes the lightning out of the wire)
Also seems to be a direct reference to pantograph pressure/contact with overhead lines, similar to the English version of this line.  There’s a strong hand/arm association with pantographs in general due to their design, modern ones bend in arm-like ways and “touch” the wire in a very particular way.
Also this is probably just wild coincidence but “Griff” makes me laugh because Zaine Griff was the workshop Electra.

“Okay, awkward question, do you need any products I shouldn’t or you don’t want me looking at?” He asks in the truck.
You shook your head and Graves nodded in understanding. It was quiet, with only the engine filling the space.
“I’m sorry you got dragged into this.” You said with a small voice.
“Dragged myself into this, hell didn’t even drag nothing, I went up to it and took it by the hand.” He told you. Graves looked at you when he heard you sniffling.
“Hey there, you’re not doing anythin wrong. If you need a minute I can pull over, doubt anyone’ll worry about a ticket.” He said.
“Just… what if it wasn’t real?” You asked, staring at the dash board. “What if it was all in my head or… or I can’t remember it because it was some fucked up dream?”
“It was real. They ran tests, and yeah you had some stuff in your system, but nothing that would cause those kinds of scars.” Grave stated, a firm tone. The last thing he wanted was there to be doubts.
You looked at him, knees to your chest, the boots you were given on the floor in front of you. Your stringy hair draped over your face as you stared at Graves. There were going to be doubts but he believed you, and he seemed satisfied with what you’d told him.
“Let’s get you a proper jacket. Don’t want you to freeze out here.”
“You said you were military? Right?” You asked walking around town. Any provisions were in the truck and you’d gotten some shirts, pants and hoodies. You were wearing one you’d found with the name of the town on it. Graves got you a beanie as well, and yes this was coming out of his pocket. You had no money to speak of. Now you were just looking around, seeing if maybe someone had seen you in town. Unfortunately you couldn’t recognize anyone.
“Yes and no.” Graves answered. “I left the military and started my own. I have a private army.”
“Is that legal?” You asked. Graves was willing to be an open book for you. Right now you needed open books, if only so you could open your own pages.
“It takes some time, but yes what I do is legal.” Graves explained. You didn’t say anything else so Graves decided to initiate conversation.
“You do anything for fun before…this?” He asked. You honestly don’t recall much. Your memories are a little foggy.
“Uh… I think I enjoyed the snow…” You said, slowing your pace as you tried to think of who you are. Graves slows his pace for you. Snow was a good start. Eliminated some of the places you could be from. Your name hadn’t pulled up any criminal records, only a death certificate. Tracking next of kin was harder.
“You like dogs?” He asked. There’s a hint of a smile, and he’ll take it.
“Yeah.” You replied. Graves looked around the street seeing if there might be something of a pet store. He knew animals were often used to assist with these sorts of things. Maybe it could help. Graves continued walking, keeping an eye out.
“What kind of dogs do you like? Small ones big ones?” He asked. Graves is focusing on your trust and he isn’t about to force it. Conversations like this will get you talking, and it won’t be much but it will be enough.
“Huskies… Newfie dogs…” you listed.
“Newfie?”
“Yeah they’re like… st Bernard’s but fluffier I think… or like great pryness.” You exclaimed.
“You ever have a dog?” He asked. You shook your head. You continued walking chatting about funny dog stories, and he gets you to smile a little. Not too long later, there’s a call and they have a room ready at the motel. Graves took you there in the truck and you passed out in the backseat.
Yeah Phil definitely couldn’t blame you for being tired. He did nudge you awake so you can at least get inside, and help him with some of the stuff. As soon as you got inside, and you winter gear off, you’re on the bed asleep. You don’t even have a blanket on, so Graves retrieves the blanket you’d had with you from the vehicle and lays it over you.
Graves couldn’t sleep, and stepped outside to take a breather. This was almost too much. He was sickened by what had happened to you and those straight scars weren’t your only wounds. You had cuts and bruises in a few places, some of which disgusted him, not with you but whoever had done this. Now you were going to go back to that place or at least try to find it. As he leaned against the door, a cop pulled up, tipping his brim in greeting.
Graves was lighting a cigarette, offering one to the cop.
“How are they?” He asked. Graves shrugged.
“They could’ve been killed by a human or nature and chose neither. Honestly amazed they can sleep.”
“I understand that.” The officer said. He looked at Graves almost expectantly. He already turned down the nicotine stick.
“You don’t need sleep yourself?” The officer inquired. Graves tensed a little.
“‘Scuse me?” He asked.
“Just You’re out here, would’ve thought you’d be in there keeping closer watch.” The officer exclaimed.
“Giving them some privacy.” Graves said firmly. His hand drifted to his gun, letting it rest casually on it.
“Are they up for tomorrow?” The officer asked. Graves relaxed a little.
“You’d have to ask them yourself. Right now I don’t know.”
“You’re sticking around?” The cop asked. Graves gave a small nod, looking around the place. “You’re sure?”
Graves didn’t like the second question, but he isn’t about to show it. “Yep, yep.”
“If you want I can take watch tonight. Let you rest.”
“No thanks.” Graves said shutting down the cop’s offer.
“Still keep an eye out from the car.” The cop said, and strolled back to his vehicle. Graves shuffled back inside, and shut the door, locking it tight. He drew the cheap curtains sending the room into darkness. He considered putting you on the bed furthest away from the door, hell, he considers lying behind you if only to keep you covered. Graves just laid down on the other bed, putting the gun under his pillow.
The next morning you woke up to Graves dropping something in the little kitchen area. You slowly opened your eyes, turning over in your blanket. Phil looked over to see if he had woken you and yep. You were still lying down but you’d turned over to look at him.
“Morning. Sounds like you slept okay.” He said. You nodded.
“Is that breakfast?” You asked, rubbing your eyes.
“Hopefully. That or I’ll set the smoke detector off.” He said, smirking. You tried to hold back your laughter and he turned to see you giggling. “Y’know. One of the two. Turn on the tv if you want.”
You looked around a found the remote. Like many tv sets you turn it on, and the news is playing. “Is that you?”
Graves looks up and sees the most recent trial he had gone too. You listened to him and General Shepard being questioned about an attack on the 141 from a couple years ago.
“Change the channel.” Graves said, before going up to the old tv and changing it manually. You watched him as he quickly covered up his past from you. He went back to making some eggs in the small kitchen.
You remember him saying he wasn’t exactly military. Ex-military then. Graves doesn’t make any eye contact with you, so you return your focus to the tv screen. Flicking through channels you eventually find MASH.
You take some clothes into the bathroom to shower and change. You get a proper look at yourself in the mirror, seeing how pale and underfed you’d been. You try combing out your hair, wincing as it yanks. It takes maybe thirty minutes and you get a knock on the bathroom door from Graves telling you breakfast was ready. You come out in warm socks, a soft hoodie, clean t-shirt and dark jeans. You pat your hair dry as much as you can, running the brush through once more to make sure all the knots are out. Once you step out you can smell a hint of smoke from the sausages.
Graves sits on his bed and you sit on yours, while there are MASH episodes continuing to marathon.
“You actually like this show?” Phil asked you.
“I can change it if you don’t like it.” You said.
“No it’s a pretty good show. Thought you’d be too young for it.” He commented. You shrugged.
“This is really good.” You commented, stuffing your face. Graves stared out the window as you kept eating for a moment. He set his plate aside and opened the door. You watched him go, shivering at the morning cold flooding in. He shuts the door and scans the area, the cop car wasn’t in the parking lot and he wasn’t expecting it to be but it’s what he was dreading. The morning was calm, people walking and going about their day.
Graves looked back at the door and trekked along the sidewalk, overhearing a couple of intimate noises coming from one or two the other rooms. No cop cars in sight. The cop last night asked some questions that made him uneasy, made him think something was going on.
You set your plate down and went to the bathroom, your heart racing. You heard someone come inside the room, and your blood froze. Their steps practically echoed to you. When they got closer, you squeezed the weapon you had in your hands. You struck once in view and then recoiled.
You’d stabbed Graves with a fork.
“I’m really sorry.” You said, for about the tenth time while Graves was cleaning the wound. He was frustrated, but he was trying not to laugh as well. Of all the things he’d been hit with, a fork is what gets him?
Phil reassures you once again that you were doing what you were supposed to. What he wanted you to do if something like that happened.
Graves puts a bandage on and comes out seeing you curled up like you were in the truck. You were wringing your hands and had some tears.
“If I was that sumbitch that hurt you, I would have deserved it.” He reminded you.
“But you weren’t.” You said in a small voice.
“Don’t matter. Ya did what ya had to kid.” Phil said looking at you. You looked up at him. You wiped your tears.
“No call from the station yet. You wanna walk around?” He offered. Before you answer he gets his coat, and you’re looking for your own. “Fresh air will do us some good.”

jann mardenborough x reader
summary: what if the crash had an alternate ending ?
warnings: angst
a/n: i know i said i needed to study but i wrote this instead *sigh*
“And I'll be in denial for at least a little while, What about the plans we made?”
ringing. all you can register in your head is the ringing, stabbing away violently against your eardrums. small dots of black creep onto your vision as fast as the beads of cold sweat start forming all over your face-
the piercing, awfully high pitched ringing in your ears seem to begin getting louder and louder, as bodies after bodies clash past you in a frantic manner. your once steady breathing suddenly rip itself out of your chest, leaving you silently gasping for air. 
watching him pace around the parking lot was starting to leave you restless. though this is nothing new to him, he still gets nervous when arriving at the track for the race and somehow, he looked more nervous today, swinging his arms through the air in an attempt to shake the feeling away. leaning against the door of his Porsche, his actions tickled your insides as you let out a small giggle. “do you really still get nervous ?” you asked, putting the side of your hand on your forehead to form a makeshift shade for the blinding sun. “um of course ? especially when you’re here to watch” he answered, arms still swinging and this time he’s pairing it with little jumps. “sure, okay” nodding, you purse your lips at his answer before letting out a small laugh. it’s become a routine for him to shake off his nervousness first before entering his paddock, not wanting jack and the crew to even smell the scent off him. and whenever he arrives with you, you do your best to try to calm him down and be a good support system. you and jann has this tradition of chasing the tension of racing day by thinking of what to get after the race, you think of it as a way to celebrate. “what about sushi ?” you suggested, after a few other suggestions he’d rejected. “sushi ?” he cocked his head at the thought, “ooh that sounds good actually”. “i know” a proud smile displayed itself on your face at your brilliant suggestion. you knew he wouldn’t say no to some good sushi at his favourite spot. leaning off the car, you reached out your hand to rest them on his chest, radiating your warmth across his skin. “don’t ditch me this time” you joked to him, referring to that one time when he went out with the team instead of celebrating with you. you didn’t mind, but you enjoy watching him writhe under the guilt. the familiar warm chuckle that you love escaped his lips as he shook his head and snaked his fingers around your waist. he leaned down to catch your lips between his, mumbling a quiet “i won’t”, making your lips curl into a smile.
“you promise ?”
“promise.”
something about the jeep carrying you towards him makes your skin crawl, as flashbacks after flashbacks mixing with scenes from reality flash before your eyes. you struggle to pick apart what’s real and what’s not, your brain working especially hard to differentiate between reality and fragments of your imagination. the speed of the vehicle is making you lightheaded, even more so than you already was. you feel like screaming, absolutely tearing your vocal chords, yelling to the person behind the wheels to hurry up, but you know anything faster than this is the speed of light. turning your head towards jack, his head was trailing off, scattering somewhere along the gnarly marbles on the track before he turns to meet your eyes. his eyebrows are slightly curved as he offers you a knowing look. nothing could describe the expression behind your eyes at the moment, but they look nothing short of pure terror, masked by a fragile layer of sheer panic.
“and what did you tell him ?” his head jerked towards you at the question, pausing the wiping he’s doing on the kitchen counter. you’ve just finished washing the dishes used for dinner just now, a daily routine since you’ve moved in together a while ago. “i said, i want to do this. i’ve wanted to my whole life, you know ?” you nod at him to accompany your listening on his story about how he convinced his dad to let him race. “everyone freaked about how dangerous the sport is and how im just simply not built for that. but i guess people go crazy about their dreams. right ?” he uttered calmly, having settled the tension between him and his family. he no longer carry around that heavy feeling of guilt when his dad was disapproving of what he was doing before nissan, which was spending hours sitting in his room, turning the wheels on gran turismo. “mm-mhm” you let out, the last bit of his sentence makes you think for yourself, pondering on the truth about dreams. have you gone crazy for your dreams ?. you’re still searching for the answer till this day. the silence after that is comforting, just the two of you basking in each others presence, just as he finished cleaning the counter.
“im proud of you jann”
the string of words coming out of you slithers around him like a warm blanket, offering him some sort of reassurance. “yeah?” you him chuckle from the sink, shaking the water droplets off his hand before turning the tap off. nodding, you look up at him, your heels digging backwards as he’s reaching his hand out for yours. intertwining his fingers around yours, “knowing that alone is enough for me” he said. beaming up at him, the soft light from the kitchen reflecting a gleaming twinkle on your orbs, before you fall backwards against the fluffy cushion of the sofa, pulling him with you.
standing there, it’s like the scene in front of your eyes has dropped a crushing weight of a boulder against your weak body, halting all the racing thoughts in your head. onlookers are starting to crowd outside the grill, eager to see how much damage the crash has caused. everything is moving so fast, as you’re trying to keep up with the pace of your surroundings though it feels as if your body has given up on you. your feet are planted to the ground, but you dont feel like you can rely on your knees on keeping your body from collapsing. your hands are clammy, sweaty, but somehow they feel like falling off from frostbite. the fingertips are cold, you’re not sure if blood is even being flowed there or they’ve stopped the second your eyes tracked him down, his body limp on the stretcher, after being pulled out from the crushed carcass of metal. you try to search for any sort of movements from him, squinting your eyes for an indicator that he’s fine, that your jann is fine, but to no avail. amidst all the chaos, the deafening sound and voices booming away in your ears, you force your legs to carry you towards where he is, clawing at the uniformed man with tears streaming down your face, begging them to tell you that he’s gonna be fine. “please step aside miss” he urgently ordered, pushing you away from their path.
“hey– hey go find danny. we’ll meet you there okay ?” you hear jack’s voice, his hand grabbing at your shoulder firmly before saying something to the first responder. you try to say something but the dryness of your throat is keeping you from doing so. your eyes roam everywhere, having failed to focus on one thing at a time, with how fucked up your mind is, trying to process everything all at once. nodding your head subconsciously, your flailing steps start carrying you away from the chaos, the sound of the ambulance’s door shutting slapping you across the face. suddenly all the invasive sounds and voices screeching into your head start to distort, before that familiar ringing comes again, accompanying the numbness in all your limbs.
12 days. almost 2 weeks.
it’s been almost 2 weeks since the harrowing incident, the horrifying crash that brings us all here. some say that it was probably the worst racing accident they’ve ever seen, some say that it wasn’t nearly as deadly as one would think. some say that no one would be able to survive a crash like that, having trapped in a 1000kg solid metal, losing control over the steer resulting in a 500 meters throw over before crushing head down against the track wall. the accident was all over the news, being talked about all around the globe. it still is, but people are starting to let it go.
not you though, how could you ? it happened right infront of you. it happened when you were jumping around, cheering for him, a wide smile plastered across your face without a single clue on what’s about to happen. it could’ve happened to literally anyone else, but it happened to him. everyone has said the same thing over and over again, it’s like they’ve been programmed to. watching everyone come in, offering you hugs and rubs across your back, telling you that everything will be fine. is it though ? is everything really going to be fine ? if everything is really going to be fine then why is he still lying on the bed, neatly tucked under the covers, tubes decorating his face and every space around him ? if everything’s fine then why is he lying there, silent, instead of babbling about how smooth of an overturn that he did in the race ?
you offer a small smile at jack who is leaving. after jann’s family and you, he spends the most time in this room, chatting with jann about his day at work, how the nissan crew were talking about him and how the car is unsalvageable. he joked about how jann’s getting more famous now, with everyone talking about him though he hasn’t received any response in return. only the sound of the ekg machine beeping could be heard, drowning his obvious attempt at hiding the sorrow. his family spends a lot of time in this room too, they’re mostly silent but at times you can hear the soft sounds of his mum sobbing at the view of her unconscious son. you’d offer her comfort, swiping your thumb across her trembling hand, acting tough as if you’re not utterly convinced that you’re gonna die with how violent are the clawings inside the walls of your heart, ripping down the muscle completely. you’d cry too, hell you’d cry with her if only your tear sack hasn’t dried down from how much you’ve wailed on the first 10 days. especially after they rolled him out of the OT, informing his family and you on the side that they’ve put him in a state of comatose, so he could recover better from the trauma the wreck has caused to his brain. you’d cry again when you went home, carrying all the stuff he left behind before the race, storing them away one by one, hoping that you’ll get to see him use them once again.
“okay so if that’s an Audi r8, what’s that one ?” pointing at the car parked parallel to the previous one you pointed at, he squinted his eyes to try and track down the said car. as he noticed it, a small scoff left his lips, before beaming at you. “you don’t know that one ?” you shook your head cluelessly while looking up at him. a smile forced itself onto your face as he looked at you in disbelief. turning your head again, you’re pretending to take a closer look at the vehicle. a Porsche 911 GT3R. you’re lying if you don’t recognise that car. it’s the same one as the one you rode in to come to the tracks, and it’s the same one you’ve been riding in for late night drives with him. seeing as you’re struggling to fight the knowing smile from growing on your face, he figured that you’re just playing with him. “i swear if you really didn’t know what car that is im gonna make you walk home” he said in all seriousness, leaning back to take your face all in. you shrug at his threat, “no you’re not” hearing your answer, he pulls you into his embrace, your back pressed against his chest. you look outside, watching as the cars were starting to drive away, his chin resting on your shoulder. “you’re right” he responded, before turning his head to kiss you.
the weary beeping sound of the machine and the smell of antiseptic are starting to mix into your system as your eyes roam across every inch and corner of the room, the same action you’ve repeated maybe a thousand times. 2.56 am. you couldn’t sleep, so you decided to drive from the comfort of your home to come see him. your ‘home’ has been moved to this place, it’s been placed on the bed infront of you, being inserted with various tubes, in different sizes, that are supposedly to support him. he looks peaceful, he always does when he’s asleep. jann’s a light sleeper, being able to be woken up by only the faint sound of doorknob softly turning at times. this time around somehow, he doesn’t seem to be able to be woken up easily, even with the sound of glass shattering right beside him. you look at his face, your eyes trail along the cuts from the glass piercing through his skin after the windshield shattered into a million pieces in his face. a heavy lump in your throat starts to form as you feel your heart being tugged from beneath repeatedly. you could only imagine the fear that he must’ve felt in the car, hands desperately trying to gain back the control as it flips through the air. shutting your eyes, your breath staggering as a single drop of tear trickled down your left cheek.
“hey honey, im here” you begin, resuming your effort in chatting him out of coma. you reach out your hand to smooth over his forehead, his hair being pushed back slightly.
“couldn’t sleep, i was thinking of you” you force a pursed smile onto your face, trying your hardest to fight the frown 
“this is the longest silent treatment you’ve given me, jann. seriously” shaking your head, you let out a sob at your pathetic joke. letting the room falls back into the silence, you try to listen to the faint sound of him breathing
“i thought we were gonna get sushi ?” you continue,
“the restaurant has been opening and closing 13 times since we wanted to go”
“you promised not to ditch me, jann” the single tear that you’d told yourself to be the only tear you’re gonna let out tonight turned into streams down your face. you’re now sobbing, your face red as you gasp for air helplessly
he could listen to your voice, as he pushes himself to get up, and open his eyes. you notice a movement from the connecting tubes, that lead you towards his fingers, which are slightly moving. your body went static, not having the slightest idea on how to react as the movements start to become more significant. taking your attention off his fingers, you turn your head towards the headboard, to notice the movements on his eyelids. cupping your palm over your mouth, you try not to get your hopes up as it might just be spasms. as you tried to contain your anticipation, a pair of brown eyes stare down at you as they try to blink away the blurriness. his head that was awfully quiet suddenly being broken into by the beeping sound, which has become slightly elevated. roaming his eyes around the room, his eyebrows knitted as the pain from throughout his body starts to register into his brain. he’d realised that he was too weak to even sit up when his arm felt like it weighted a ton. you wished his family was here to witness him gaining consciousness, getting pulled back into reality as you offer your prettiest smile at him. he returns a quick small confused smile before his eyes dart anxiously behind you, like he’s searching for someone. as you try to spread your fingers into his palm you’re startled by his sudden flinch, retracting his hand away before be continues to look around in confusion.
“hi” you greet him softly, mentally face palming yourself because that can’t be the best you could do as your first word after he woke up. his head jerks towards you, scanning you across your face, his eyebrows still knitted in a frown
his silence is formidable, being in contrast to his usual chirpy self. you’d managed to grab a nearby nurse to inform that jann has woke up, and now she’s checking on him to make sure of his condition with a clipboard in her hand. he stays silent throughout the tests she performs,
before she asks “can you tell me your name ?”
“jann– jann mardenborough”
“do you recall why you’re here ?”
he paused for a moment, forcing his brain to give her the answer that he feels being stored so far at the back of his head. “a crash, i- i think” she nods at his answer, scribbling something down on the clipboard. “i’ll be back with a doctor” she informs, as she starts to walk towards the door.
“im sorry-” he calls out, halting the steps of the nurse before she perks up and turn to face him
“who um–” shaking his head, he tries to swallow his saliva
“who’s this ?” he blurts out, before gesturing towards you. you immediately frown at his question, taken aback as your vision’s starting to cloud
“jann,, it’s me” your shoulders are tense, stopping yourself from moving as you feel like one wrong move could send you down the pits of hell. you look at him with glossy eyes, hoping that he’s just messing with you.
“are you the rep ?” your face flashes pure panic at his follow up question, you quickly reach out for his hand, grabbing at it, thinking that maybe it’ll help him remember. “you don’t remember sir ?” the nurse chimes in, to which he shakes his head reluctantly, before slowly pulling his hand away from yours. you feel that familiar heat creeping onto your face once again as tears start brimming at your waterline, accompanying the growing panic you’re feeling. as you feel yourself tremble and what feels like your head being slammed down on concrete again and again, you scramble to find something to tell him about who you are
“jann,, im– im your girlfriend remember-? ”
“i don’t think i know you” his quick response makes you sob harder as you feel like you’re being punched in the throat
“wh- what about sushi ? you remember that right ? you promised–” as he struggles to retain the information, he feels like his brain is being mushed together to juice out the details you’d mentioned, before the beeping sound of the machine starts to become faster by the second. the nurse grabs you by your arm to stop you from saying anything anymore as she calls out for other attendants outside. as you stood there, eyes locked with his, you feel your body being pushed to the side by other people coming into the room. once again, you feel everything slow down around you, feeling the familiar ringing in your ears.
the sight of jann starts to disappear as he’s being drowned away by the nurses and physicians checking up on him. suddenly you feel like the corner you’re standing on expanding rapidly, carrying you away as you hear the voices in your head telling you repeatedly;
“nobody said racing was easy, nor it is safe”

A Load board is essentially an online site that provides a shared platform for shippers and truckers/owner-operators. The shippers post information of the load such as the origin, distance, destination and other important details, and owner operators can apply to pick up transport those loads. Load boards can be very helpful if the business is not leased onto a dedicated carrier.

Lease-on
Some companies have a private load board. These are specifically for owner-operators to lease-on with that company. This option provides the owner-operator with the stability of a big company – which is an added advantage for a new owner-operator. It also gives the freedom to choose the freight directly from a load board. Some companies also offer discounts on operating expenses to owner-operators. Hence, it helps the owner-operator utilize its purchasing power. Owner-operators may also get paid a fuel surcharge versus per mile.
Freight brokers
Freight brokers help finding loads. Choosing a freight broker can be a handy option if an owner-operator is not looking to lease-on with a trucking company. A freight broker eases the process by doing most of the leg-work. This includes dispatching loads, tracking shipments, payrolls, invoicing, etc. A freight broker assists a shipper in finding a carrier that is qualified to move its load. Once a deal is negotiated, the broker connects the shipper with the owner-operator. The broker negotiates the highest amount with the shipper for the load, and connects the shipper with a carrier that is willing to move it at the lowest amount. The margin is called a spread, and is charged by the broker as a fee for the service provided. The spread is usually 15-25% of the profit. 
For example, an owner-operator agrees to move a load for $6000. A freight broker negotiates with the shipper for $7000 to do the trip. The margin of $1000 is the spread, goes directly to the freight broker.
A freight broker can be an individual or a company. When looking for one to partner with, it is recommended to find ones who are registered with the FMCSA and cover insurance costs. It is a great option for beginner owner-operators who are yet to get a strong foothold in the industry. It is important to have clarity regarding the impact of the spread on the profits made for a business. 
Dispatchers
A dispatcher manages the flow of the freight for efficient movement of the truck load. This is done by avoiding empty miles in the trips. Doing so helps in maximizing profits for owner-operators. One of the keys to smooth functioning of this service is constant communication with the owner-operator. A dispatcher ensures compliance and usually provides customer service. In addition to finding loads for the owner-operator, dispatchers also aid in various backend operations. This includes all associated paperwork like tax records, permits, insurance, etc. Some dispatchers provide end to end services. This means the dispatcher takes care of finding and managing the loads, as well as ensuring timely payment from the shipper. The fee is charged either at a flat rate, or as a certain percentage of the load. An owner-operator can hire an individual dispatcher or a trucking dispatch service provider. This is another way for owner operators to find truck loads.
Government Contracts
Federal, state, and local governments often outsource their transportation requirements. To be considered as an option for moving government loads, an owner-operator has to register on the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) website as a company. Registering as a government contractor can help an owner-operator find loads in their own city/area. Obtaining contracts can vary depending upon the security clearance required for winning the bids. A contract with government entities like the US postal service or getting the business’ name on the GSA list can bring in steady work-flow and also offer great pay. Government contracts are a great option for finding loads for an owner operator.
Prospecting
Prospecting is the continual process of finding loads. It revolves around researching shippers in the local area. The owner-operator should research the number of shippers, the kind of loads needed to move, destinations catered to, etc. This will help the owner-operator determine a prospect shipper to get loads from. The process requires the owner-operator to connect with the prospect shipper by reaching out to them. In the communication, an owner-operator can enquire about the shipper’s requirement and any trips suitable for the owner-operator to undertake. It also helps in finding any future opportunities that the shipper might offer. This requires a bit more work for the owner operator but also provides a good opportunity to find more loads.
Networking
Just like any other business, networking can be a key step for ensuring an owner-operator’s visibility and possible growth in the industry. Creating friendships can lead to prospective clients. Getting involved in associations like the American Association of Owner Operators (AAOO) or other local events can help in professional connections that may be a great pathway for getting loads. It not only helps in staying informed about news in the trucking industry, but also helps in tips and guidelines to grow business.Owner operators should choose a strategy or combination of strategies above to determine what works best for the business. At first, an owner-operator might not have a lot of load options to choose from. The owner-operator may have to take up any available job to keep the business running. MBARI scientists and engineers build and adapt advanced technology that enhances ocean data collection. Led by engineer Giancarlo Troni, the CoMPAS Lab team develops scalable marine technology that can easily be modified for use in a wide variety of vehicles and platforms.

The thing about Jurassic Park vs Jurassic World is that Jurassic Park set itself in the real world. It stuck to tech and scientific developments that were conceivably possible in the 1990s. Maybe a bit advanced for what was actually possible but not outside the realm of possibility if it received enough funding from an elusive billionaire.
Jurassic World does not do that. It shows us this elaborate design for the park with cool little orb vehicles and whatever else and then explains some batshit over the top difficult to believe nonsense about their genetically engineered super dinosaur. It focuses so much on the spectacle. Doing things like feeding sharks to bigger prehistoric sharks and other stupid shit that it has no grounding in the world we live in.
One of the most charming parts of Jurassic Park is seeing the dinosaur hatching from it's egg and it is a spectacle and great exposition at the same time. That's how all the spectacle works in Jurassic Park. There is a story telling point to it while still being spectacle. Feeding the cow to velociraptors is foreshadowing. Feeding the shark to a bigger shark is nothing. It means nothing. It looks cool in the trailer.
No one considers the logistics of Jurasssic World while Jurassic Park is entirely logistics. We're constantly reminded throughout the film that a storm is coming and boats are leaving. We're reminded that those cars are on a tracks and don't go anywhere without power. Major plot points are centered around getting the power back on and how the computerized systems work. Problems are caused by not accounting for logistics. We talk about dinosaur poop as a useful diagnostic tool for veterinary practice.
In Jurassic World the problems are because they like bioengineered too close to the sun or whatever. In Jurassic Park the problems are caused by multiple failure points. They're a bunch of small mundane oversights that cascade when one guy tries to make a buck by exploiting them. It's real world failings that bring the place crashing down. In Jurassic World it's because the dinosaurs got too cool.
