Jensen Viperceptor, 2013 (1973). A one-off restomod Jensen Interceptor fitted with a Dodge Viper V10 engine by the Valley Gas Speed Shop in Hampshire. The car was substantially rebuilt at an estimated cost of £200,000 and there were plans to make a series of 25 but it has remained a one-off. The Viperceptor sold at auction this past weekend for £91,040

Although the video doesn’t showcase drag racing or burnouts, the striking all-black 1970 Challenger, now road-worthy after years in storage, is a breathtaking sight. Remarkably, the car remains in near-original condition, save for a few upgrades like a rebuilt brake booster, new carbs, radiator, master cylinder, and tires.
But what truly sets the “Black Ghost” apart from other classic cars, and how did it earn its intriguing moniker?
The original owner, Godfrey Qualls, was a Detroit police officer by day and a secretive drag racer by night. Risking his career, he would make unexpected appearances at local gatherings, dominate quarter-mile races, and then mysteriously vanish.

While Godfrey’s Challenger wasn’t entirely stock during its racing heyday, he kept modifications minimal, opting for a muffler delete, an aftermarket coil, and slick rear tires on stock wheels.
The HEMI V8’s impressive 425-horsepower output was more than enough for him to claim countless victories before disappearing for good in 1975. By then, the “Black Ghost” had already secured its legendary status in Detroit.
The enigmatic Challenger driver’s true identity remained a secret for decades until Godfrey revealed his thrilling drag-racing tales to his son, Gregory. Inheriting the car when his father passed away, Gregory brought the “Black Ghost” to light in 2017, sharing the astounding story of officer Qualls and his legendary vehicle.

Beyond its captivating history, this Mopar is an exceptional rarity from the golden age of muscle cars. Of the nearly 77,000 Challengers sold in 1970, a mere 356 were equipped with the formidable 426-cubic-inch HEMI V8. Godfrey’s choice of a four-speed manual gearbox further refines the car’s status to one of just 136 produced.
But the exclusivity doesn’t end there. With the added SE package, it’s one of only 60 Challengers ordered with the bundle. Considering the color and other options, it’s possible that fewer than 10 such examples were ever made.

Bobby sways in the backseat as Dean takes his suggestion to get the hell out of Dodge literally, weaving the Impala down the winding country road at high speed. The old Chevy is a heavy and unwieldy car, but Dean drives it like the devil, in spite of the concussion Bobby is almost certain he sustained during the fight with the Trickster. Well - the fight with the scantily clad, voluptuous girls the Trickster had conjured, to be exact.
“Whoa! Take it easy there, son!” Bobby complains from the back seat as the car swerves through a sharp turn. “She’s not a racing car! Her suspension’s not gonna like it if you keep going like that!”
“Baby’s fine,” Dean shouts over the roaring engine. Riding shotgun, Sam seems unfazed by Dean’s driving. He leans into each bend and drift with practiced ease, like a sailor having found his sea legs a long time ago.
“Yeah, but are you?” Bobby asks, steadying himself against the backrest in front of him.
“Whaddaya mean?”
“Those girls got you pretty good. Saw you flying into that seat head first. And swaying on your feet after. That melon of yours okay?”
Dean huffs. “‘s fine.” He doesn’t even turn his head to look at Bobby.
But Sam’s picked up on Bobby’s concern and studies his brother with a frown.
“Is he right? Did you hurt your head?”
Slowing down a fraction, Dean throws him an annoyed look. “No, man, I’m fine! You saw that I was fine!”
The road has straightened out. Dean pushes the Impala above the allowed speed limit, but it’s smoother going now.
“I was kind of busy with Bobby and friggin’ Chainsaw Man, Dean,” Sam points out. “I saw that the girls were kicking your ass.” A smirk curls his lip. “But I didn’t see you hitting your head.”
“I did,” Bobby remarks from the backseat. “Twice.” He really doesn’t want to rain on Dean’s parade, and he’s not one to make a big fuss about a little conk on the head - but from where he’s sitting, the boy’s profile looks pale under his freckles, and Bobby sees a suspicious lump forming at his hairline.
“That’s a pretty nasty bruise you’re getting,” Sam, peering at Dean, observes from the passenger seat. “Maybe Bobby’s right. Slow down!”
“What?”
“Let him check you out.”
“Have you two lost your minds?” Dean decelerates the car, but only to turn his head and glare at Sam, then at Bobby. “Listen, I’m fine! Bobby! When did you turn into a freakin’ mother hen?!”
When you were six and Sam was two and your dad dropped you off at my place with pneumonia.
“Look,” Bobby says grumpily. “If you want to ride out a concussion at sixty miles per hour, fine. Suit yourself! But if you pass out behind the wheel and drive us off the road, I’m gonna be mighty pissed. And you only just rebuilt the damn car. I’m pretty sure you don’t wanna do it again?”
He can hear Dean rolling his eyes from the backseat.
“Dean?” Sam, clearly Team Bobby now, has pulled out his worried little brother look. “Come on, man. Just pull over! Let’s check you out. Humor me?“
Dean shakes his head. “This is ridiculous.” But he slows the Impala down and stops.
They’re in the middle of nowhere, in a forestry area, and Bobby makes Dean get out of the car and takes him through the motions while birds whistle around them and sunlight dapples the Impala’s black hood through the treetops.
“Headache?”
“No.”
Bobby arches an eyebrow. “You sure?”
Dean fidgets. “A little.”
“Dizziness?”
“Barely.”
“You feel sick?”
“No.”
“How many fingers?”
Dean rolls his eyes but - with a bit of squinting - he recognizes the four fingers Bobby is holding up. His pupils are equal-sized, and although the lump on his head is prominent now, he can walk in a reasonably straight line and remembers his presidents when Bobby quizzes him.
“See?” Dean grouses. “Told you so.”
“You still look a little pale,” Sam says from where he’s watching, leaning against the car. “You sure you’re not gonna puke?”
“You’re sitting beside me,” Dean answers, fed-up with their fussing. “You’ll be the first to know if I do.”
“Haha. Jerk.”
“Bitch.”
Bobby smirks into his beard without the boys seeing it. After the intensity of the last time he saw them - Sam possessed by a demon, Dean with a gunshot wound - their brotherly squabbling is a balm to his soul. For once, this isn’t about life or death. For once, they don’t have an enraged supernatural beast chasing their tails. For once, no Winchester is threatening to bleed out under Bobby’s hands.
For once, in fact, Sam and Dean are just being who they’re supposed to be - brothers, riling each other up without any of their bickering threatening the fondness Bobby can sense underneath. Their father’s death had done a number on them, and their hunt for the yellow-eyed demon is making Bobby lose sleep with worry, but it warms his heart to witness the strong bond that is forming between the two brothers. As different as they are, in spite of their old rivalry, Bobby can tell that their dynamic is shifting ever so slightly. Dean’s still the big brother - commanding and protective - while Sam’s remained the sensitive, defiant younger sibling. But what they’ve gone through has brought them closer, smoothing out their age gap and making them see more eye to eye.
“You gonna let me drive now?” Sam challenges Dean.
“Why would I? I’m good! Bobby? I’m good, right?” Dean gestures at him, looking for an ally.
“You got your ass handed to you by two juiced-up hookers and their Trickster pimp,” Bobby remarks dryly. “You’re takin’ a break from driving until that duck egg on your head comes down and you can see straight.”
“Bobby…” Dean throws his hands up in near-comical exasperation.
“Shut up and give your brother the damn keys!”
A few dark looks and mumbled curses later, Dean gives in and tosses the car keys at a grinning Sam.
“She’s as good as new, Sammy,” Dean warns him. “One scratch and I swear I’ll give you a trashing you can’t sit for a week!”
Unbothered by his brother’s threats, Sam saunters over to the driver’s side and makes a show of sliding behind the wheel. Dean glares when Sam slams the door shut with too much force.
“Hey!” Dean shouts. “Careful! Oh, and by the way, you still owe me a new set of tires!”
Sam rolls the window down and sticks his head out. “And you still owe me a new laptop!”
Huffing, Dean just flips him the bird and stomps over to the passenger side.
Smiling, Bobby opens the rear door and lets his aging bones sink into the backseat. He’s not gonna remind them that both the slashed tires and the missing computer were the trickster’s doing.
When Sam starts the Impala, pointedly revving the engine, Dean punches him in the shoulder, and Sam shoves back. Peeling back onto the road, Sam pops a new cassette into the tape deck and turns up the volume. A mischievous grin spreads across his face as the first tunes of a country song fill the car.
“What the hell?!” Dean winces, appalled. He reaches for the tape deck.
Confidently, Sam holds one big hand out to keep his scrabbling brother from ejecting the cassette.
“Uh-uh,” he says, with authority. “House rules, Dean! Driver picks the music, shotgun shuts his cake hole!”
Dean slumps back, hands over his ears, groaning.
Behind them, Bobby laughs.

Just remembered when I was in my twenties and had my first car. It looked like a 1992 Dodge Colt, but the engine had been completely rebuilt, and it was a stick shift.
I had a surprising number of dudes pull up beside me at red lights, gun their engines, then give me the chin nod.
I had no idea WHY they wanted to race me, but I blew them all away.
One night, my dad happened to be in my car when a couple of dudes pulled up next to me and gunned their engine at a red light, and I knew my dad knew what it meant, so I figured he'd love watching me smoke them.
Smoke them I did, and then Dad said, "Gayle, they're HITTING on you."
"What?"
"They're gunning their engine to show off and impress you."
"Well, then they should drive better."
Years later, when I had my first brand new car (The Yaris we still drive), Chrysler had tried to come out with a sports car, and I'd read the stats and laughed because the get-up-and-go on that 'sports car' versus my 4-cylinder subcompact was kind of embarrassing.
And then, at lights, dudes who had bought that slow ass sports car gunned their engines to get my attention and gave me the chin nod and well, I think you know what happened.

Big Warehouse Opens Up To Reveal Secret Stash of Plymouth Superbirds, Ford Talladegas
In January 2023, we saw a massive collection of Dodge Charger Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds cross the auction block. It included no fewer than 12 "winged warriors," and it raised no less than $6 million. It remains the largest collection of Mopar aero cars I've seen to date, but the stash you're about to see here is just as impressive. Uncovered by Ryan Brutt of "Auto Archaeology," this collection is nowhere near as fancy. As in most of the cars are awaiting restoration, and only a few are in Concours condition. But the warehouse keeping them safe from the elements is home to over 20 aero vehicles. And I'm not talking only about Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds. The stash also includes Ford Talladegas and the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler IIs. It's probably the most extensive aero car collection in the US right now.
The footage begins with the car that led Dodge to develop the Daytona, the Charger 500. A green example awaiting restoration, it has a 440-cubic-inch (7.2-liter) V8 under the hood. It's sitting next to a blue 1969 Charger Daytona, also fitted with a 440, but the rest of the row comprises four 1970 Plymouth Superbirds.
There's an orange example that's running and driving and a B5 Blue car that was rescued from a barn. This one's having its nose rebuilt and packs a four-barrel version of the iconic 440 RB. Next up, there's a white Superbird with two desirable features: a Six Pack version of the 440 and a bench seat. The fourth Plymouth, also of the B5 Blue variety, is getting rebuilt as we speak.
The next row includes six Ford Talladegas. Based on the Fairlane Cobra Sportsroof, the Talladega arrived in 1969 to homologate the nameplate for NASCAR. The race car went on to win the 1969 season and prompted Dodge to design the radical Charger Daytona. About 750 road-legal cars were built, which makes the Talladega notably rarer than the Plymouth Superbird (1,935 units).
The six cars parked in this row need restoration, but they're still in one piece and retaining their V8 engines. One of the white examples was reportedly about to get crushed when it was rescued. Four more Talladegas are parked on the other side of the warehouse, including three examples in excellent condition and ready to be driven. In all, the collection includes ten examples: five in Wimbledon White, three in Presidential Blue, and two in Royal Maroon. Yes, the Talladega was offered in only three colors.
The Talladega wasn't the only NASCAR homologation special built by Ford Motor Company in 1969. Mercury also got a piece of the action and developed the Cyclone Spoiler II. A beefed-up, more aerodynamic version of the Cyclone, the Spoiler II project reportedly spawned 503 units. Unofficially, however, Mercury may have built only around 350 units. Regardless, this collection includes four examples, two of which are almost pristine.
Unlike the Talladega, which was equipped with the 428-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) Cobra Jet V8, the Cyclone Spoiler II left the factory with the smaller and milder 351-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) Windsor V8. Unfortunately, there's no info on how many cars from this collection are still equipped with their numbers-matching mills.
Always though that these were kind of dumb cars to own, and they could barely get rid of them when they were new, some hanging around dealerships for years, now my car collecting and wrenching days are coming to an end, sort of developed a warm spot

It is finished! I'm so happy to post the last chapter and finish off my first long fic! Thank you to everyone who has joined me along the way and who left comments, kudos, bookmarks and subs! This has been a wild ride, so I hope you all enjoy the ending to the first entry in the Pestilence!AU trilogy. Inside, Danny and Valerie catch up after the harrowing events the day before, and Danny asks an important question...

She landed a few feet from the bushes, not wanting to get twigs and leaves caught in the newly rebuilt engines of her hoverboard. She still missed her wings, flying was much more convenient and exciting with them, but after the curse left, so too did the ability to transform. She discovered her ability to interface and control with other technology diminished as well. It had been nice to control the systems inside Plasmius’ house, but she could at least enjoy the knowledge she’d crippled its defenses. She also missed the ability to create new weapons with a thought.
Still, having her mind be curse free and no longer subject to the whims of homicidal ghost hunting sprees definitely made up for it. She slid the armor back into place, the suit quieting to a hum in the back of her mind. Another change involved the suit being more silent. They could still communicate, she just seemed less opinionated. But, if the opinions she had shared were any indication, she tended towards the primal and vulgar anyway. She did not need dietary guidance or suggestions! Squirrels are filled with protein, so are rabbits. They were adorable woodland creatures and she was not a wild animal. They were not going to eat them. The suit didn’t seem particularly happy about it, but the grumbles settled out into gentle hisses. She didn’t try to take control anymore either, just gave suggestions about her diet and butted in about her social life. It was still weird, all things considered, to share her mind with a piece of tech, but what could she do? 
She walked into the park a few minutes early, preparing to settle in for the long haul. For all of his many virtues, Danny had never met a deadline he couldn’t dodge…except today, apparently. She walked into the park, ready to find a bench to relax on for the next fifteen to twenty, only to find him already inside and standing around looking for her. Ok, that’s a new one, Fenton. Agreeing to talk about his feelings and showing up on time, all without being reminded? He’d just opened a new chapter, or maybe just flipped to a new page. When she walked closer, she could see him shove a breakfast pastry in his mouth with one hand and check his phone with the other. On the bench near him sat a water bottle. He picked it up and started chugging the liquid inside. He’d definitely rushed here. “Hey Danny.” He started choking, and she rolled her eyes. “It’s not like I crept over here.”
“I’m used to sensing... Uh, hi Val.” He set the bottle down and waved. “You’re still feeling better, right?” He walked over to her, hands in his pockets, typical bright smile on his face. Like she hadn’t almost died yesterday, like he wasn’t always half-dead himself.

So we all know that Bradley drives goose’s bronco and Mav rides bikes but what do Ron Tom and Chris and Jake drive. I’ve always personally thought Tom would have a sensible SUV to go with his COMPACFLT persona but then secretly have a nice vintage muscle car like a Mustang or a Cougar or Chevelle. Jake I’ve always thought would drive either an older truck or one of those trucks that are so shiny but also over sized. Idk where you’re from but the second kind of truck is especially prominent in my part of the USA Midwest. Idk what Ron and Chris would have but I know Chris would have multiple being mechanically inclined (even tho some of them are probably project cars)
Ah you have the giant trucks also. I live in the upper (US) Midwest, the giant trucks are everywhere. Literally almost run me off my small country road most nights.

Tom absolutely has a sensible car. It’s like a Lexus or something. Nice, reliable, expensive, it checks all the boxes. For his 50th birthday though he got a completely rebuilt 1968 mustang. He almost cried when he saw it. Tom doesn’t know a lot about cars but he’ll sit in the shop while Chris and sometimes Jake work on them. Likes to hand Chris tools he needs likes to kiss his shoulder when he slides out covered in grease.
Chris switches his cars around a lot since he likes working on them. He’ll build them, drive them for a while and then sell them. So his change a lot but consistent is a motorcycle and then a 1969 dodge charger that Tom and Ron got him as a 10th anniversary present. He’s got like 7 cars he keeps around, some fully built, some in pieces. Fortunately none of them mind. They find it cute he’s so into cars. He’ll drag home the worst car ever and be like “look! It’s not even rusty!” And Tom will point out that it literally doesn’t have any seats or an engine.
Jake has two cars and a motorcycle Ron and Tom don’t know about… his vintage truck lives in Texas, but his hellcat lives in California with him. He’s also got a project 1976 mustang cobra he keeps in Chris’s shop. He worked on the truck with Chris one summer. It was his 16th birthday present. The motorcycle was a birthday present to himself when he turned 30. It ends up being something him and Mav can talk about.
Ron’s cars though? He knows nothing about cars. Decided very early on he didn’t want to know. He drives whatever Chris gives him. The lexus or a Mercedes normally. He’s not as into cars he can appreciate a car but he doesn’t love them like the rest of them. Planes are his true mechanical love. He ends up having to drive Jake’s car for like a week or two and that’s the first time he’s ever like o h maybe I do like cars.
When Jake’s dads finally find out about the motorcycle they send Lucas after him to bitch him out about safety. (Inspired by my aunts always referring to motorcyclists as ‘fast organ donors’) Lucas makes him look at all sorts of crash photos and gives him a lecture of a life time. It doesn’t matter that he’s 30. That’s the two week old baby they all held. Jake obviously wears all the protective gear and points out Chris has one. But all things considered it’s one of the least dangerous things Chris has done over the years so the point isn’t exactly made…

Alternative Basis Headcanons 2
In a previous post, I covered the non British engines like Victor and Hiro and thought up alternative designs for them. This time, I’d like to go over some potential alternate basis ideas for other characters. So let’s get started, shall we?
First up is James. Canonically, he’s described as an experimental L&YR Class 28 fitted with a pony truck. But seeing as these engines never had such a thing, the next closest matches, shape wise, are the GWR 2600 Aberdare and the Caledonian Railway Class 34. Ultimately, I think the 2600 makes for a better alternate basis, since it has a Belpaire firebox.
In both the Railway Series and TV Series, Percy is depicted as a Frankenstein 0-4-0ST of unknown origin. Which got me thinking. The Caledonian Railway 264 Class looks quite similar to Percy, so I feel this basis is rather fitting.
Donald and Douglas are both fictional add-on members of the 652 Class. But the 652 numbers only went up to 57645. But since the first two members of the Caledonian Class 30 were renumbered 17646 and 17647, how about the Class 30 as their new basis?
Next up is the first and only cut character on this list, Barry. According to Christopher Awdry, Barry was envisioned as an Ivatt 2MT. But to differentiate him from Arthur, suppose his basis was changed to the Fowler 2-6-2T.
Stanley (no relation to the 10-12-D turned pumping engine) is based on a Stewart and Lloyd’s 0-6-0ST. But hear me out. This is probably just me, but the GNR J13 feels like a perfect alternate basis for him.
In the show, Flora’s basis is one of the Moseley steam trams. But this made it pretty easy to think up a potential new basis for her, the Great Eastern Railway G15.
I’ll be honest, I don’t really have much to say in regards to Billy and Charlie. Their basis is fine as it is. They’re still Manning Wardles, albeit, really old Manning Wardles from the BW&LR.
In Journey Beyond Sodor, Theo is depicted as a railway traction engine. But I may or may not headcanon him as Coffee Pot #1 in rebuilt condition.
In canon, Sonny is of a similar design to Bellerophon, a preserved tank engine. But my headcanon for Sonny is that he’s an LNER J62.
Regarding Samson, it took a little while to think of what to say about him, but here goes. Although Samson is based on a Barclay & Co tank engine, my headcanon for him is that he’s a North Eastern Railway Class K.
Whiff’s official basis is Aerolite, an engine built to pull the Mechanical Engineer’s saloon coach. I’ll be honest, I don’t really like the concept of a single wheeler being a garbage engine. So my headcanon is that he’s one of the LMS Dock Tanks.
I don’t have much to say about Scruff and Logan either, since they’re also both unchanged, basis wise. Scruff is an LNER Y3 Sentinel, while Logan is an S&DJR Sentinel.
Daisy is a single unit version of the Class 101, which doesn’t make much sense, since her basis is a DMU. The 121 Bubble Cars, on the other hand, were single units. So that’s my basis headcanon for her.
Norman is apparently based on BR 11001, and Dennis’s brother. But this poses a problem, since only a single example was built. To get around this, my headcanon is that he’s a BR Class 16, which suffered frequent breakdowns.
And lastly, we have Splatter and Dodge. During their only appearance, they were depicted as a pair of Class 08s. But there’s no shortage of 08s in the show, so to help these two stand out a little more, what if they were instead a BR Class 13?
Whew, this post was a real doorstopper. It’s probably going to be a little while before I post again, but I’ve already got a couple ideas in mind. One idea is a post going over the NWR shed codes, and the other idea I had is a post detailing the private industrial engines of Sodor. Anyway, I think that’s enough rambling from me.

Has it really been two years?
April 24, 2025
I just opened our blog and saw the last entry was from June, 2023 describing our return from  our last Bahamas Cruise. Wow how time flies.
So what have we been up to? Cruising wise that is?
Well since the last entry we did a spring cruise up the east coast to the Chesapeake Bay. We stopped at some of our old favorites along the way; Charleston, St Augustine, Fernandino Beach and found some new favorites as well. We went on a mission to find neat craft breweries and collect the stickers from our favorites. We must not be too discriminating as we collected enough stickers to cover the beer fridge at home.
On the Bay we stopped at Solomons Island, Cambridge (where our son did an Ironman later that year), Kent Narrows and Annapolis.
Oh, and there was Norfolk, where we had a run in with a nuclear submarine. But more on that later.
Our final destination northbound was Baltimore. On our way there we went up the Potomac River to Washington DC. We anchored at Mt Vernon, an amazing place, and wrangled an invitation to a wine tasting! The dockmaster made special arrangements to be picked up at the wharf at 6 by private carriage (golfcart) and taken back to the estate for the festivities. Here I learned an important lesson. Virginia white wines are not bad, some even good. But the Virginia reds are terrible, among the foulest concoctions I’ve ever tasted.
On the way back down the Potomac we stopped at Alexandria, also a really neat town.
In Baltimore we visited with our son Ryan and his wife Katie. We were also joined by our daughter and her family. What a great time it was!! To all be together in a interesting city, to experience the life Ryan and Katie live, to interact as a family with everyone together brought great joy to Linda and I. On the way into the inner harbor and out we passed through the remnants of the Key Bridge and by the container ship that hit it. Its hard to imagine the carnage and wreckage without seeing it in person.
On the way back south we again stopped at Annapolis where we bought a new dinghy. Annapolis is expensive.
But to the present. Yesterday we started the motors and cast off the lines for another adventure, the Bahamas.
It was a day that was hard to imagine 7 months ago as we scurried down to Punta Gorda on my birthday to see the damages Helene had done. And two weeks later when we evacuated for Milton only to return to see our home with more damage and Changes in Attitudes damaged as well. But after 6 months of hard labor (We took January off for the holidays and skiing) we are ready to relax.
CIA got a bottom job and the running gear refreshed. She got gussied up with a full compound and wax. I completed a few wiring jobs and for future guest comfort replaced the forward head and all the sanitation hoses. Such fun! But the work was done, or so I thought. More on that later as well.
Yesterday was the day to get out of dodge. As we left the dock at high noon our neighbor Lynn was there to photograph our departure. And when she sent us the pictures I realized I had a bit of faux pas.
To make room on the aft deck I tied our large fender balls to the stern rail.
In the middle of the boat and very close together.
As my friend Doug kindly pointed out CIA looked like the southbound end of a northbound Texas Pickup truck.
I have since separated my balls.
Around 6 we anchored off Point Ybel, looking forward to a nice dinner and…….
“Captain, we have no water”
The house water pump had been on my list of to do projects but since it was working the days before departure I put the project off. Till now.
No worries, I have a identical rebuilt pump in the spares, I’ll just swap it out, wont take that long.
Except that pump didn’t pump either.
The original pump had a bad motor, the rebuilt pump had a bad pump. By scavenging the parts I was able to construct a working pump. It only took three hours in a 100 degree engine room on a rocking boat at anchor.
That shower was about the best I have ever had.
We weighed anchor at 7 this morning. As I write this afternoon we are enroute to Little Shark River, our intended anchorage for this evening.
Oh, about the nuclear submarine incident.
We were departing Hampton Roads, across from Norfolk when the starboard motor started to sputter. A minute later it quit and the port motor also started to sputter. We made it to the middle of the main channel when it quit as well.
We were powerless, drifting toward an anchored ship. The water was 80’ deep, too deep to anchor. And less than a half mike away a nuclear submarine was heading toward us surrounded by patrol boats with 50 caliber machine guns. And they were pointed at us.
So I radioed the Coast Guard.
On contact I gave them my situation and position. I requested they relay the information to the sub and its entourage and also call Tow Boat US for us.
The Coast Guard has a list of standard questions they ask; souls onboard, lifejackets, etc. But one really caught me off guard.
“Changes in Attitudes, do you have adequate food and water?”
Huh? WTF? How long do you think this is going to take!!
By the time Tow Boat US arrived I had the motors running. The night before I transferred fuel from the aft tank and forgot to close the valve. This allowed air to get in the fuel lines. On discovering my error I closed the valve, bled the fuel lines and started the motors.
As the motors started I called the Coast Guard and asked they inform the sub and the gunboats I was now under power and heading away.
And please point those guns somewhere else.

August 29th, Prince George
Best laid plans...
Up early this morning for a 7am departure. Coach was idling for about 15 minutes while we were putting in slides and jacks. Just as I was reaching to put it into gear, the engine light goes on. Called freightliner and he said it was a minor error with the computer getting bad data, and it should clear after a few trips. Unless it develops into something major.
I decided that I had enough fun and we would make it a long day and get to Prince George. Because if we had to get stuck somewhere, PG was the best choice.
Got Diesel and headed down highway 29. This route saves about 10km over going into Fort St. John and staying on 97. Did this in 2018 and knew it was hilly but the road was much worse now (except the sections they rebuilt). This included coming down a 10% grade into a dirt ditch running across the road. However, the scenery was fantastic as after each hill, you came back into a beautiful river valley.
Back on the 97, the road was also in need of TLC in many sections.
Made it to PG around 2pm. Filled up the diesel at a much better price of $1.65 a liter. Started the engine and the engine light went off (dodged another bullet).
Pulled into Northern experience RV park. Stayed here in 2018, and it was Soso. Now it is much improved with nice landscaping, 50amp service, and fast wifi. Staying here 3 nights now.
The oil filter seems to be fixed. Checked it a couple of times on the way down and no issues.
We are tired. Long stressful day.
