the tragedy of good pilot, good man being written entirely in ice pov is that i don’t ever get to show maverick’s side of things, but here’s the conversation that definitely happened between mav and goose halfway through chapter 2:

Goose: What took you so long?

Maverick, frustrated: Ice stopped me! He’s such a dickhead today, I don’t get it! I thought we really hit it off last night!

Goose: …

Goose: Remember when we were kids, and I chased Carole around the park with a worm because I wanted to get her attention but I didn’t know how to talk to pretty girls?

Maverick: Yeah? Why?

Goose: This is like that.

Maverick: Oh.

I love writing Ice as disinterested in girls that hit on him in bars. He’s polite enough to keep from hurting their feelings but he really couldn’t care less about them giggling over him

The way I started laughing like a hyena when Ice accidentally starts flirting with Mav in an islander boy kinda way and he’s so mortified like shiiiiiit but Mav is strangely attracted to it

Could anyone imagine Mav and Goose taking a vacation to Hawaii one year and they learn how to do Hula dances (which are gorgeous btw). Mav is actually really good at it but he doesn’t show off this skill to anyone after the vacation.

Fast forward to when Mav and Ice are dating. One night at the bar, the theme is Hawaii and a Hula song starts playing. Mav, drunk as fudge, starts to Hula dance.

Ice is just staring with a beer in hand, eyes wide behind his aviators. He’s captivated by how smooth and perfect Mav is moving with the music. Everyone else is just having a BLAST and laughing and trying to copy Mav.

The next morning, Mav wakes up with a massive hangover and asks Ice what happened. And all Ice can manage to say is that he fell in love further with Mav.

Mav is so confused but he doesn’t find out what he did until Slider tells him that afternoon. He was morbidly embarrassed but Ice tells him not to be and that it was gorgeous and sexy.

So now on rare occasions, Mav will Hula dance for Ice in their little home because he can be is fullest truest self with his boyfriend.

I feel like ice wouldn’t live that greatly on his own. Whenever he’s alone in the house there’s no one to remind him to stop working and do basic things like eat, sleep, take a break, so he just falls back onto his workaholic tendencies and would work well past healthy hours and often into the early hours of the morning, only sleeping when he fell asleep on his desk.

It was always sider and gooses job to make sure ice had fun and did stuff other than study during the academy

Then when they joined the fleet properly and went their separate ways it became sliders job to make sure ice finished work at a humane hour and that he wouldn’t bring it home.

Then there was a gap between ice being grounded and him and slider following their own paths and ice and maverick getting their shit together that ice would just keep working continuously. Often forgetting to stop. He never got enough sleep and was running on coffee and spite. Bonus points if he goes through something hard during this time period.

Then Mav and him get their shit together and it becomes Mavs job to make sure ice stops and relaxes. He got a few tips from slider after receiving the shovel talk and others he worked out by himself.

Whenever he went on a longish deployment or if ice had to travel for a conference he tried to call whenever he could and check in, knowing without it ice would work the hours away to try and suppress his worry (if it was a deployment) deal with stress (if it was a conference)

It is so important to me that Maverick inherits Slider after Ice dies.

No, but really.

Maverick is never alone in that big house, suddenly Slider is everywhere. Slider is making him breakfast, making sure he gets to work on time, helping him with the bikes and the Mustang. Slider is always underfoot and eventually, Maverick tells him point blank that it’s okay, that Mav is going to be okay; that he's content to live in the memory of his life with Ice, he accepted his husband was going to pass this way, they talked about it — and then, he realizes…

Slider is a fucking wreck.

“I don't…” Slider admits, with big red-rimmed eyes. “You’re all I've got left of… I met Tommy when I was five.”

It was never about Maverick being okay.
