Scanning a QR code using your smartphone is an easy feat that can be done without having to use another phone. Whether you have an iPhone or Android, or you have a free QR code scanning app available, there are at least a few very straightforward ways to accomplish it. As QR codes are becoming more and more common in ads, business cards, websites, and applications, knowing the efficient way to scan QR codes will surely be handy to ease many aspects of your life. In this article, we will guide you on scanning QR codes using your phone, and how you can discover and retrieve the data in the QR code.
What is a QR Code?
Let's first describe a QR code and its purpose before moving on to the techniques. A QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that may hold information when scanned by a gadget like a smartphone or QR reader. QR codes were developed first by Denso Wave in 1994 and were for the car industry only until today has been found widely utilized by different industries including marketing, logistics, entertainment, and many more. They usually have black squares placed on a white background that forms a grid. Upon scanning, this will provide a fast retrieval of information.
QR codes are also used in many other applications:
Website links: A website can be reached when scanning a QR code.
Product details: There are QR codes on the package of most products for more detail.
Business card: You can store your contact information in QR codes and distribute them easily.
Payment: These QR codes can be used to make contactless payments.

How to Scan a QR Code on an iPhone
With an iPhone running iOS 11 or later, scanning a QR code is quick and easy. You can scan QR codes directly through the Camera app. Here is how you can do this:
Steps to Scan QR Code Using iPhone Camera
Launch the Camera app on your iPhone.
Align your camera with the QR code. The code will automatically be recognized by your iPhone if it falls within the camera's viewfinder.
In the case of marking a URL, you should see a popup message at the top of the screen to ask if it should open that link. To open the URL in Safari, simply tap on the notification.
If the QR code has information like contact information or a prompt to pay, follow the prompts on the screen to complete that action.
iPhone users can use the Camera app, but you can also scan QR codes with Live Text (iOS 15 and later) in images. If you have a saved image of a QR code in your gallery, then follow these:
Open the Photos app and choose the image with the QR code.
Long press on the QR code within the image.
Your iPhone will automatically recognize the QR code, and the relevant options (like opening a URL or sharing the information) will be displayed.
Tap the appropriate option to access the content.
How to Scan a QR Code on Android
Scanning a QR code can be pretty easy nowadays especially when your Android device is equipped with several features, although these are found in newer versions of the OS. The procedure varies with your device model and OS version. Here is some general guidance on how to scan QR codes using your Android phones:
Steps to Scan QR Code on Android
Point the camera toward the QR code after launching the Camera app. Make sure the QR code is well-lighted and visible.
A pop-up message that shows information included in the QR code may show up once it has been scanned. If the code contains a link, it may also ask you to view it in your web browser.
If your notification doesn't open when you tap that notification, then follow the prompt according to what was encoded in the QR code.
In case your Android does not automatically detect the QR code, or the camera application does not support scanning of QR, alternative ways have been devised to scan QR codes using Android.

Amazon Fire Phone: The Most Hated Smartphone Ever Despite Having Some Unique Features.
In 2014, Amazon made a bold move to enter the highly competitive smartphone market with the Amazon Fire Phone. Armed with innovative features and deep integration with the Amazon ecosystem, the Fire Phone seemed poised for success. However, despite its potential, the Fire Phone became one of the most criticized tech products of the decade, leading Amazon to discontinue it less than a year after launch. This blog explores why the Fire Phone failed and the lessons it offers for tech innovation.

Aiming High: The Amazon Fire Phone’s Standout Features
Amazon didn’t hold back when it launched the Fire Phone. It introduced cutting-edge, novel features that were unique at the time, designed to distinguish the Fire Phone from iPhones and Android devices.
1. Dynamic Perspective: Perhaps the most ambitious feature, Dynamic Perspective used four front-facing cameras to create a 3D-like effect, responding to the user’s head movements. This allowed for features like tilting the phone to scroll through pages or viewing images from different angles.
2. Firefly Technology: Firefly allowed the phone to recognize objects, music, and even product barcodes through the camera, making it easy for users to identify items and purchase them directly on Amazon. This feature was a powerful integration with Amazon’s shopping ecosystem, positioning the Fire Phone as a seamless shopping assistant.
These features were impressive on paper, but they ultimately fell short of being practical enough to justify the device’s high price and limitations.
Amazon-Centric Design: A Double-Edged Sword
One of the biggest reasons for the Fire Phone’s failure was its overwhelming focus on Amazon’s ecosystem. The Fire Phone ran on a heavily modified version of Android, known as Fire OS, which didn’t support Google’s app ecosystem. This meant users couldn’t access popular apps like Google Maps, YouTube, or Gmail, which are essential for most smartphone users. Instead, users were directed toward Amazon’s own services, such as Prime Video, Kindle, and the Amazon Appstore.
While this Amazon-centered approach aligned with the company’s goals, it made the phone feel restrictive for users accustomed to the flexibility of Android or iOS. The heavy reliance on Amazon’s ecosystem didn’t offer the comprehensive app experience people had come to expect, and it created a barrier for anyone who wanted more than Amazon’s services.
The Pricing Misstep
At launch, the Fire Phone was priced at $199 with a contract, comparable to flagship models like the iPhone 5S and the Samsung Galaxy S5. However, consumers felt that the Fire Phone’s limited features didn’t justify its premium price. While Apple and Samsung were known for high-performance hardware and vast app ecosystems, the Fire Phone seemed to fall short in both areas. This misalignment between price and perceived value was a significant deterrent for potential buyers.
Poor Timing and Fierce Competition
The Fire Phone entered the market during a period of intense competition. By 2014, both Android and iOS had firmly established themselves as the dominant platforms, leaving little room for a new contender. Other companies, like Microsoft with its Windows Phone, struggled for similar reasons. For Amazon, the Fire Phone’s proprietary OS and limited app offerings made it difficult to attract users already invested in other ecosystems.
Amazon also faced challenges in capturing developers’ interest for the Fire Phone. Without popular apps from Google and the lack of developer support for new apps, the Fire Phone’s appeal dwindled even further.
Key Takeaways from the Fire Phone Failure
The Amazon Fire Phone’s downfall provides valuable lessons in product design, user experience, and market strategy:
1. Listen to User Needs: Amazon focused heavily on unique features and ecosystem integration but overlooked basic user needs, such as app variety and flexibility. Understanding what users value most in a product — such as core functionality and app accessibility — can be just as important as introducing innovative features.
2. Balance Novelty with Practicality: While Dynamic Perspective and Firefly were impressive, they didn’t address essential smartphone functions. Balancing innovation with practical usability is crucial in creating a successful tech product.
3. Choose the Right Timing and Ecosystem: Launching in a market dominated by iOS and Android, Amazon’s closed ecosystem approach limited its appeal. New entrants need to offer not only unique features but also compatibility with the established tech ecosystem or provide a clear advantage that users find compelling.
Conclusion: The Legacy of the Fire Phone
Amazon discontinued the Fire Phone less than a year after its launch, marking it as a rare misstep for the e-commerce giant. However, the lessons learned from the Fire Phone were not wasted. Amazon later shifted its focus to more successful ventures like the Kindle and the Echo, which better aligned with user needs and Amazon’s strengths. The Fire Phone stands as a reminder that in tech innovation, understanding user expectations, providing value, and fitting into the broader ecosystem are often more important than novelty alone.
In the end, the Amazon Fire Phone became a cautionary tale for tech companies, underscoring the importance of listening to customers and designing products that offer practical, everyday value.

Will QR Codes Make a Comeback? by Tristan Howlett
About 8 or 9 years ago, BlackBerry was at the top of its game. I vividly remember showing up to school in the 7th grade with my Nokia (still probably the most reliable phone ever) and being jealous of all the kids adding each others’ BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) pins. You could even do so by taking a picture of someone’s personalized barcode—a “QR code.” It was a version of new tech that I thought would take off in so many other areas of my life. BlackBerry obviously declined slowly with the evolution of iPhone and Android OS, but what happened to these codes?

So what is a QR code?
Traditional barcode technology was built in the later half of the 20th century for use in merchandising. Cashiers at supermarkets/retail stores used to have to manually enter in prices at the register, so barcodes were a great solution to quicken that process and allow a computer to track and calculate item purchase data. It had its limitations though, as barcodes could only be read left to right and therefore could hold only 20 alphanumeric characters.
In 1994, Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave needed a way to track the vast amount of parts and supplies in the manufacturing process. The development team created a square “Quick Response” code, which contains information that can be read in two dimensions: both up/down and across. It also has special positioning information that allows it to be read from any angle. This resulted in a code that could contain up to 7,000 numerals and be read 10 times faster than a traditional barcode. The developers released all of the specifications to the public for free, so the technology quickly spread across many industries.
What was it used for?
Much of the initial QR code usage was for companies looking to get tighter control over supply chain processes, since it allowed for computer-based tracking of supplies and products. It didn’t take long for companies to recognize a consumer-facing benefit of these codes though. When smartphones like BlackBerry adopted QR code reading technologies, brands were able to leverage this opportunity to get their name out there.
Instead of a larger sales pitch that involved incentivizing consumers to type in a URL, a QR code could just push a business prospect further down the funnel by leading them directly to a brand’s website. This was an innovative way to bridge e-commerce with physical advertising and drew crowds in with calls to action.
Here are some examples: A toy company creating a QR code out of legos that links to their website, Heinz placing a code on their bottles that directed towards an online quiz, and a South Korean retailer that created an outdoor code that was only visible for an hour; generating a lot of buzz.
For example, New York City took advantage of this back in 2010 by putting up QR codes on buildings that lead to the city’s many informational websites. (If you have iOS 11, you can still read this code and be directed to nyc.gov by opening up your camera app and pointing it at the code in the photo below).

Why is it less popular now?
The US never had the tech ecosystem to support widespread usage of QR codes. They were popular for a few years because of the sheer novelty, but they couldn’t be made to last. For one, Apple didn’t make a QR code reader native to the phone until September 2017 and only some Android devices currently have one, so people would have to rely on QR code reader apps they had to download externally. Less people had the ability or awareness to read these codes, so they became a waste of space for advertisers and were soon phased out.
Secondly, there’s not a strong payment ecosystem in the US. QR codes are huge in China, for instance, because people have the ability to scan codes and pay for items through a single app: WeChat (other competitors exist too, like AliPay). In the US, this would be the equivalent of connecting a bank card to Facebook Messenger and then opening up the app when shopping at any retail store. Because China has these one-stop-shop apps like WeChat, there’s no limit to how QR codes are being used there. They can identify pets, show source information for food and drinks, use for bike/ride sharing, replying to job boards, etc. Here’s a video of how WeChat Pay works in China:
youtube
What does it look like in the US and what could it look like in the future?
Last year iOS released the ability to scan QR codes in the camera app of the iPhone, so we could potentially see more brands taking advantage of the new feature. Huge companies like Walmart, Target, Starbucks, Whole Foods (Amazon) and Dunkin’ have the ability to pay through their respective apps.
A payment ecosystem like that of China could be achieved through payment systems like Venmo or PayPal here that already scan and generate QR codes, but the credit card system here is different and building up a network of accepting merchants would take a long time.
Funny enough, Amazon is bringing us back to catalogs that have QR codes inside. With their huge e-commerce presence and their growing brick and mortar infrastructure, Amazon could make great strides in educating US customers about the practicality of QR codes. We’ll certainly see if it’ll stick—or if it’ll take some sort of fancy 3D code to do the trick.
If you’re interested in some of the other stuff that QR codes can be used for outside of business, just scan the QR code below. Or you can just click here.

[ad_1] If full voice control is a bit much, you might use Siri on iPhone and Google Assistant on Android to open apps, tweak settings, and more. You likely set up Siri when you first set up your iPhone, but there are a couple of settings that can make Apple’s voice assistant more useful for folks with vision loss. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Siri, and consider some changes. If you turn on Always Listen for “Hey Siri”, your iPhone will listen even when it’s face down or covered. You can also lengthen the time Siri waits for you to finish speaking under Siri Pause Time, you can toggle on Prefer Spoken Responses, and you can toggle on Announce Notifications on Speaker.Apple via Simon HillTo make similar changes to Google Assistant go to Settings > Google > Settings for Google Apps > Search, Assistant and Voice, and choose Google Assistant. You may want to tap Lock Screen and toggle on Assistant Reponses on Lock Screen. If you scroll down, you can also adjust the sensitivity, toggle on Continued Conversation, and choose which Notifications you want Google Assistant to give you.How to Identify Objects, Doors, and DistancesFirst launched in 2019, the Lookout app for Android enables you to point your camera at an object to find out what it is. This clever app can help you to sort mail, identify groceries, count money, read food labels, and perform many other tasks. The app features various modes for specific scenarios:Text mode is for signs or mail (short text).Documents mode can read a whole handwritten letter to you or a full page of text.Images mode employs Google’s latest machine-learning model to give you an audio description of an image.Food Label mode can scan barcodes and recognize foodstuffs.Currency mode identifies denominations for various currencies.Explore mode will highlight objects and text around you as you move your camera. The AI-enabled features work offline, without Wi-Fi or data connections, and the app supports several languages.Apple has something similar built into its Magnifier app. But it relies on a combination of the camera, on-device machine learning, and lidar. Unfortunately, lidar is only available on Pro model iPhones (12 or later), iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (4th generation or later), and iPad Pro 11‑inch (2nd generation or later). If you have one, open the app, tap the gear icon, and choose Settings to add Detection Mode to your controls. There are three options:People Detection will alert you to people nearby and can tell you how far away they are.Door Detection can do the same thing for doors, but can also add an outline in your preferred color, provide information about the door color, material, and shape, and describe decorations, signs, or text (such as opening hours). This video shows a number of Apple's accessibility features, including Door Detection, in action. Apple via Simon HillApple via Simon HillImage Descriptions can identify many of the objects around you with onscreen text, speech, or both. If you are using speech, you can also go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > VoiceOver Recognition > Image Descriptions and toggle it on to enable detection mode to describe what is depicted in images you point your iPhone at, such as paintings. You don't need a Wi-Fi or data connection to use these features. You can configure things like distances, whether you want sound, haptics, speech feedback, and more via the Detectors section at the bottom of Settings in the Magnifier app.How to Take Better SelfiesGuided Frame is a brand-new feature that works with TalkBack, but it's currently available only on the Google Pixel 7 or 7 Pro. People who are blind or low-vision can capture the perfect selfie with a combination of precise audio guidance (moving right, left, up, down, to the front, or the back), high-contrast visual animations, and haptic feedback (different vibration combinations). The feature tells you how many people are in the frame, and when you hit that “sweet spot” (which the team used machine learning to find), it counts down before taking the photo.
The Buddy Controller feature on iPhone (iOS 16 and later) allows you to play along with someone in a single-player game with two controllers. You can potentially help friends or family with vision impairment when they get stuck in a game (make sure you ask first). To turn this feature on, connect two controllers and go to Settings > General > Game Controller > Buddy Controller. While this guide cannot cover every feature that might help with vision impairment, here are a few final tips that might be handy. You can get spoken directions when you are out and about on an Android phone or iPhone, and they should be on by default. If you use Google Maps, tap your profile picture at the top right, choose Settings > Navigation Settings, and select your preferred Guidance Volume. Both Google Maps and Apple Maps offer a feature where you can get a live view of your directions superimposed on your surroundings by simply raising your phone. For Apple Maps, check in Settings > Maps > Walking (under Directions) and make sure Raise to View is toggled on. For Google Maps, go to Settings > Navigation Settings, and scroll down to make sure Live View under Walking Options is toggled on.If you are browsing the web on an Android device, you can always ask Google Assistant to read the web page by saying, “Hey Google, read it.”You can find more useful advice on how technology can support people with vision loss at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB). To find video tutorials for some of the features we have discussed, we recommend visiting the Hadley website and trying the workshops (you will need to sign up). [ad_2] Source link

How to Implement Flutter Barcode Scanner From Scratch - DZone Web Dev

About two years ago, I wrote an article sharing how to build a Flutter barcode plugin with Dynamsoft Barcode Reader step by step. At that time, Flutter was still under development and only supported Android and iOS. Nowadays, Google has released Flutter 2, which allows developers to build apps for mobile, web, and desktop from a single codebase. If you want to build cross-platform apps, it is worth putting much effort into Flutter from now on. Since the new Flutter is not compatible with the old one, I decide to refactor the APIs of the Flutter barcode plugin and add a new method to support barcode scanning by video stream in real-time.
Flutter Barcode SDK Plugin
In the following paragraphs, I will demonstrate how to develop a Flutter barcode plugin that supports reading barcodes from an image file and image buffer, as well as how to publish the plugin to pub.dev.
Developing Flutter Barcode SDK Plugin With Dynamsoft Barcode Reader
My current plan is to make the plugin work for Android. Therefore, I create the plugin package as follows:
To add code for other platforms, such as iOS, to the plugin project, I can run:
The plugin API is defined in the lib/flutter_barcode_sdk.dart file, which is the bridge between Dart code and platform-specific code. A android/src/main/java/com/dynamsoft/flutter_barcode_sdk/FlutterBarcodeSdkPlugin.java file is generated as the Android entry point.
Dart Code
Let’s get started with lib/flutter_barcode_sdk.dart.
The first step is to define a BarcodeResult class, which contains barcode format, result, and coordinate points, for deserializing JSON data returned from platform-specific code:
Java
13
14
Create methods decodeFile() and decodeImageBuffer() respectively for picture and video stream scenarios:
1
2
5
6
7
8
11
12
13
14
The _convertResults() function is used to convert List<Map<dynamic, dynamic>> type to <List<BarcodeResult>> type.
Java Code
When invoking Flutter API, the Android onMethodCall() function will be triggered:
2
5
8
9
14
15
20
21
22
23
26
28
29
30
32
Here are the basic steps for platform-specific code:
The decodeImageBuffer method is designed for camera stream. To avoid blocking the main thread, I use SingleThreadExectuor to deal with the CPU-intensive work in a worker thread.
Publishing Flutter Barcode SDK Plugin to Pub.dev
Prior to publishing the plugin, you’d better pass analysis by running the command:
If there is no error, you can publish the package to pub.dev:
I have successfully published the Flutter barcode SDK to https://pub.dev/packages/flutter_barcode_sdk.
Flutter Barcode Scanner
Once the plugin is done, it is time to build a barcode scanner app with a few lines of Dart code.
First, I add the Flutter camera plugin and flutter_barcode_sdk to the pubspec.yaml file:
Java
3
Then, initialize the camera and barcode reader objects in main.dart:
7
The app consists of a camera view, a text widget and two button widgets:
Java
2
7
10
16
19
25
31
36
In the videoScan() function, I invoke startImageStream() to continuously get the latest video frame and call the barcode decoding API:
4
7
10
14
17
20
31
34
35
38
50
The pictureScan() function reads barcode from an image and show the image and results on a picture screen:
2
3
Finally, I can build and run the app:
A test for recognizing the 1D barcode and QR code on the Raspberry Pi packing box.
iOS, Web, and Windows.

There’s a good reason palm oil is the most produced vegetable oil in the world: it’s relatively cheap, versatile, and has a really high yield. Oil palms can produce up to ten times as much oil from each harvest than any other vegetable oil crop would when grown on the same amount of land. It can’t be produced just anywhere - oil palms only grow within 10 degrees north or south of the equator, a tropical range that is also home to the highest amount of biodiversity in the world. The clear-cutting that prepares land for traditional methods of palm oil farming has already destroyed huge swatches of rainforest habitat across south-east Asia and Africa. As oil palms are the most efficient and widely-used source of vegetable oil in the world, there’s no truly viable replacement crop available; instead, conservation efforts are focusing on developing sustainable oil palm farming techniques that prioritize preserving rainforest ecosystems.
Developing viable sustainability initiatives is an ongoing process, but since the establishment of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil in 2004, more than 3500 companies and organizations around the globe have recognized the importance of the project and signed on as members. Currently, almost a fifth of the palm oil produced in the world - 19% - is certified sustainable by the RSPO.
You can most easily support sustainable palm oil initiatives by buying products made with sustainably-sourced palm oil and supporting zoos that are member of the RSPO. When you buy from companies that are members of the RSPO, especially during high-volume shopping seasons for products that contain palm oil like Halloween, you’re making sure that choosing sustainable ingredients is a viable business model; by supporting zoos that are RSPO members, you’re ensuring that their research and conservation expertise is able to inform future sustainable palm oil production directives.
The poster above contains some of the biggest candy-producing brands that are part of the RSPO that you can choose if you’re like to support when purchasing Halloween treats in the coming weeks, but it’s by no means a complete list. There’s so many companies involved with the project around the world that it can be hard to keep track - so the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has created a really handy free app to help you out! Just input a company or product name, or scan the barcode on a package, and it’ll confirm for you if it’s made with sustinably-sourced palm oil.
The United States is one of the top ten major consumers of palm oil in the world, so every small choice you make to choose sustainable products has a direct impact on ensuring the survival of rainforests and the animals who live there.
Let’s make this Halloween both sustainable and spooky by supporting companies that use RSPO-certified palm oil!
Download the free CMZ Palm Oil app: (IOS)(Android)

VUDU removes Disc-To-Digital scanning from iOS app
Disc To Digital conversion is one of the highlights of VUDU - a Walmart digital movie service. And scanning bar codes of your physical movies on an iPhone or iPad was a really super convenient way to add digital copies of your physical DVDs and Blu-rays to your VUDU and Movies Anywhere digital lockers.
But with a recent update, VUDU has removed mobile disc-to-digital scanning from its iOS app. It apparently is still available on Android. They have replaced it with a clunkier, but still functional, in-browser scanning feature. Now, instead of scanning directly with an app using your iPhone camera, you snap pictures of the barcodes one at a time and upload them for VUDU to recognize.
Hopefully this doesn't mean that VUDU Disc-To-Digital is going away, but it's made an already clunky system a little clunkier to use. After all, the desktop D2D system is hopelessly broken, especially on Macs.

Google’s Lookout app for vision-impaired now scans food labels and long documents
Google has updated its Lookout app, an AI toolkit for people with impaired vision, with two helpful new capabilities: scanning long documents and reading out food labels. Paper forms and similarly-shaped products at the store present a challenge for blind folks and this ought to make things easier.
Food labels, if you think about it, are actually a pretty difficult problem for a computer vision system to solve. They’re designed to be attention-grabbing and distinctive, but not necessarily highly readable or informative. If a sighted person can accidentally buy the wrong kind of peanut butter, what chance does someone who can’t read the label themselves have?
The new food label mode, then, is less about reading text and more about recognizing exactly what product it’s looking at. If the user needs to turn the can or bottle to give the camera a good look, the app will tell them so. It compares what it sees to a database of product images, and when it gets a match it reads off the relevant information: brand, product, flavor, other relevant information. If there’s a problem, the app can always scan the barcode as well.
Document scanning isn’t exactly exciting, but it’s good to have the option built in a straightforward way into a general-purpose artificial vision app. It works as you’d expect: Point your phone at the document (the app will help you get the whole thing in view) and it scans it for your screen reader to read out.
The “quick read” mode that the app debuted with last year, which watches for text in the camera view and reads it out loud, has gotten some speed improvements.
The update brings a few other conveniences to the app, which should run on any Android phone with 2 gigs of RAM and running version 6.0 or higher. It’s also now available in Spanish, German, French, and Italian.

The immersive technologies like augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality have been touted as game changers in the field of UX design/development. The advent of these technologies has made it possible to bridge the gap between the real and virtual worlds. While augmented reality brings digital elements into the real-world, virtual reality takes users into a virtual world. Both these technologies are rapidly gaining traction in the retail and e-commerce industries. Be that as it may, augmented reality has become more popular because of its easy accessibility and minimal hardware/software requirements. As a result, the latter has witnessed a widespread adoption in various industries across different platforms.
Statistica had predicted that the global consumer market for immersive technologies would bring in $6.3 in revenue by the end of 2020. The numbers may get affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the popularity of AR/VR technologies doesn’t seem to recede just yet. On the contrary, it is expected to rise as companies are looking for innovative ways to overturn the effects of COVID-19.
At Oodles Technologies, we are receiving many requests from clients for building augmented reality apps even during the pandemic. It clearly indicates the increasing demand for AR/VR app development.
This blog post highlights the main types of augmented reality applications you build to enhance your customer experiences across various platforms.
Types of Augmented Reality Applications
If you have previously used AR apps, you might have noticed several variations in virtual elements displayed on your device screen. It is because there are different types of augmented reality technologies available in the market. Likewise, you can develop different types of AR applications based on your project requirements. The AR technologies are broadly classified into four types. Let’s discuss these types in detail.

Marker-based Augmented Reality
A marker-based AR application typically recognizes patterns (markers) concealed in various images to trigger a virtual event. For this reason, these applications are also called image recognition-based AR applications.
Markers are distinct patterns present in images and videos that mobile cameras can easily detect and read. These markers can be designed to prompt different types of virtual elements to appear on the mobile screen. Users can scan these markers similar to the barcodes and reveal interesting facts about a particular product or unlock various deals and offers. Merchants and manufacturers can use these markers in different ways, for different purposes. The best examples of marker-based AR apps are Microsoft ScanLife, Goggles, and Popcode.
Markerless Augmented Reality
While marker-based augmented reality is limited to a specific use case, markerless AR development services offer a broad spectrum of use cases and applications. First off, it doesn’t require an image cue to trigger or activate. Contrarily, it operates on the positional data obtained from a device’s camera, GPS, or accelerometer using proximity sensors. The data obtained by a device’s sensors create virtual 3D space in the real-world environment. The process is known as simultaneous localization and mapping or simply SLAM. The overall functioning of a markerless AR application revolves around the SLAM algorithm.
SLAM aids developers to place virtual content directly into the real-world environment. This content can be triggered whenever an app user enters a given location or a proximity zone. For this reason, it is also known as the location-based AR. The famous social game called “Pokemon Go” is an apt example of markerless augmented reality.
Projection-based Augmented Reality
It is yet another example of the markerless augmented reality that follows a more complex approach to trigger virtual elements. It employs advanced projectors to create immersive light forms or mount information onto flat surfaces. This type of augmented reality technique can be used to create deception about an object’s position, location, depth, and orientation. Projection-based AR is not a user-specific technology as it offers a futuristic approach to be used on a large scale mainly for mass entertainment.
Superimposed Augmented Reality
As the name suggests, this type of augmented reality mounts virtual elements onto the object in focus. It can be done by replacing the full or partial view of an object with a virtual layer to engage the viewers. In superimposed augmented reality, object recognition techniques come into play to detect and virtualize various objects or faces. Snapchat and Instagram face filters are apt examples of superimposed augmented reality.

Final Thoughts
The best part about augmented reality applications is that they are easily available to ordinary users as they impose minimal device restrictions. Any user can access these apps through their smartphone, laptop or tablet. Besides, you do not need to have a dedicated software or operating system to access these apps. A majority of AR applications are fully compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux, and web browsers like Chrome, Safari, Opera, and more.
